Listening again after too long! Damn, love this band and song. The hook is unforgettable!!! I play this every time I fire up my 5 string bass. (I'm now 61 years old, this shit keeps me feeling in my 40's!! No offense! LMFAO!) Thank you Dead Soul Tribe!
Sounding like tool is basically the best complement you can give an artist. Tool is magnificent. I would be very proud if my music drew that comparison. IMO the vocal styles are hugely different between the two bands. Tool also doesn't normally bust out into an acoustic interlude between 2 really heavy parts ether - though they will transition in other ways. Why ever hate on good music? That is the real question...
i cant prove you wrong, but im open to the music you create, that anyone creates. there are artists out there that feed off of hate and negativity. i feel sorry for them. myself, i play the bass, i love it and will continue exploring the ever expanding oneness of all things until i do die. and when i do, my ideas and thoughts will stay behind. death only pushes us out of our shells not out of existence. there is no such thing as greater art because we are all one mind.
people judge music far too much. If you say this band is "like Tool" (which I am a very observant TOOL fan) than basically, Tool has been a band that has helped in the creation of this bad, I don't think they are trying to "copy" anything, they are their own. Just enjoy the music as knowing it is a part of the bands collective, and do not judge. It's ridiculous.
Critiquing is but one of many hobbies, of which interest me to a great degree. Being a critic of something, quite literally refers to the critical aspects of observing, assessing, and analysis. It's what being scientific is all about. I hear the same argument you just put forth by people of every different faith(all equal glimpses of the same untruth). My reason for pointing out things, which I see as negative, is to restore what I consider to be positive.
@niginit album 1 Psychotic Waltz A social Grace, 1990 Album 2 Psychotic Waltz Into the Everflow 1992 This tour features 16mm film projections during the concert WAY before Tool did it. Devon was the singer if you didnt know. "Spiders and Flies" was released about 2 years before "Ticks and Leeches" Just to name a few. The difference in success: William Morris Agency. The common denominator between Tool and DST is King Crimson, Devons biggest influences are Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull.
good one.. hehe.. did meet devon and rollz..funny peeps, not as serious as their music.. hehe... but nice people, and i allow myself to say that these guys along with tool make up the top of artists today
Um... I'm surprised no one is mentioning their similarity to Jethro Tull. As much as I love DST, I think they sometimes just sound like a Jethro Tull worship band. :/
You're trying to say, action is more important than observation. Which is a weird thing to say, considering I never said anything about action. Of course intervention, when absolutely necessary is a good idea. Unfortunately, it is not some kind of standard. You can't just act on everything you think. You have to calmly observe and reflect, not at all unlike science. Basically, action without observation is blind and reckless. Observation is the basis of all action. Observation > action.
And I would also like to hear from you, specifically which lyrics from this band you are referring to as great. Thrill me with a few lines of what you consider to be the best.
"the only thing I ever learned from love, was how to shoot at someone, who outdrew ya" Just because we might agree on some things, doesn't mean we agree on everything, take music for example. You got it all wrong, I'm a very loving, caring person, I just don't have to be all of the time. It's not natural, or healthy to. Let's also be clear, I'm not using hate here. A lot of people have replied to my comments with hate. I'm expressing disdain, not hate. Get it straight. b4 it's 2 L8 haha
all this tool comparison is appropriate for the two or three songs out of the whole discography that are admittedly Tool influenced. What about the flute? what about the piano? What about the Acoustic Guitar songs? Although there are some songs in a similiar vein as tool, there actually is a much broader style that fans way out beyond this one comparison for anyone who cares to hear an album of Deadsoul Tribe.Incidentally it was Devon himself who coined Jethro Tool during and interview as a joke
@niginit I can see that this kind of conflict is what you live for. I checked out your site and I see its the same there, so I am not going to try to win you over. Strange thing is, after reading Devons interviews, his views on religion, education, nature are pretty much where you are coming from. If you knew the guy, you might really get along. The difference is he is very loving in his mannner of trying to reach people, so, one appropriate line: "Hate can only create more hate" Goodbye.
actually, thats how the brain works. we categorize and draw similiarities between things. its why theres racism, its why there biases. people try to associate things with things they already know. if comparisons were not drawn, nothing new would ever be liked. because no one would like something that they cant find anything similar to other things they like.
@niginit Hi there. Maybe you arent interested seeing how you seem a bit hostile towards DST. If all you heard was this song it is understandable you would think they are trying to be Tool clones. Tool is your fav and that offends you. Thats cool. But to be fair, would you please check out songs here like The Gossamer Strand, A Stairway to Nowhere, and/or Goodbye City Life. You will see there is much more going on far far away from the Tool sound. Just check it out, ok?
Those artists "who feed off of hate and negativity" are some of the best. Tool definitely has and does. If you don't think so, you don't understand any of their music. Negativity is just another word for nothing left to lose. There is such thing as greater art, you are mistaken. Oneness is the degradation of divisions between consciousness, it really has nothing to do with divisions of quality. Tool is greater art than this crap and I make greater art than anyone who listens to this.
Devon / Buddy had never heard of tool with he broke out with Aslan / Psychotic Waltz. If anything Maynard sounds like Devon. I hear Ozzy, Dio, Gillian, Ian Anderson. Buddy Lackey and Devon Graves wont disclaim he was influenced by early 70's and 80's great bands, Deep purple, Sabbath, Jethro Tull (obviously). Ive had the pleasure of living in the same town / apartments as Buddy, and that guy would walk in stead of driving his bad ass Camero to keep focused on his music. Driving was a distraction. Tool wasn't a band nack then so come on now whos sounds like who? Dumb conversation all together.
Not naming anyone in particular, but why do people find it necessary to go post negative comments without any more purpose than getting into an argument? It seems very immature to me and I wish these people would find something better to do like get a life or grow up or get a new hobby.
Tool is obviously better, I don't have to argue that. It's what is called an axiom. I could write not only a book, but a series of books explaining this. However, I seem to be preoccupied with other, more pressing matters.
its kinda weird, if you play a progressive metal sound but do clean vocals you are ripping of tool. what next if you do "dirty" vocals you are mastodon or opeth ? i mean i wouldnt mind a few more mastodon albums....or opeth. come on copy cats !!!
No, Niginit, it's not a cookie-cutout of Tool. I'd refute it with more words, but it's too ludicrous an idea to need elaboration. Plus, it's youtube, nobody'll ever read this. Great song, DST is a great band, so is Tool, keep 'em separate.
I didn't at all mean to say that they're a photocopy of Tool. Yes, that would be ludicrous. No, just that, instead of building something from nothing "embracing the random", they cheated themselves out of creating music which had a piece of them inside every lyric, note, beat. This is what tool obviously did, does and recommends others to do, as well. So, if they were truly creating music in the light of Tool, then they would have made better music that sounds nothing like a rip off.
I wonder what you mean by this? What's the wrong sort of vocal generally and what's the kind of vocals they should have? No argument, I just want to know what you're getting at. Give some examples
@niginit I would love to hear your music then. Lets hear your lyrics. Please dont write back cause your just too hostile and you just called the lyrics to one of the greatest writers of our time "trash".
They are coming close to Tool with their riffs and beats but nowhere near Tool in terms of quality or lyrics. Honestly, anyone can make a song sound similar to Tool, the problem in making quality music like Tool, is that you need the timing to be unique and these guys are basically making riffs and beats that sound similar to Tool, without actually playing with the timing much. Tool is a freak band, it's because they put more time and effort into their music. This is just not even close.
Distinctly of lesser quality. You can still meet uniqueness by accident. In other words, it may be that this is their best answer for what they would consider a band who is obviously influenced by Tool's music, but also, who don't want it to seem as if they are emulating them. It's fine if you dig it, I'm just setting the record straight. My main criticism of the band would be, a lack of feeling, or creativity, not that they are trying to rip off a little from a more successful band.
A. The civil war was about civil rights, yes. Good job. B. My ignorance pales in comparison to yours buddy. C. 620,000+ lost their lives because the south wouldn't address the problem. Instead, they shut their minds off to the suffering of others. They wouldn't OBSERVE suffering and reflect on it. Therefore, war was waged, although, it didn't have to be waged, we could have bought and freed slaves like Europe. We did it the hard way, because we didn't want to observe and learn.
No, there are a handful of fantastic writers and I'm sorry to break it to you, they aren't featured in this music. I never criticized your music, or lyrics, why would you then ask me for my own lyrics? My critique was on one of your favorite bands, not your music. I'm not being hostile, you're just afraid of words. I'm not at all going to post any of my lyrics, or riffs for you. If and when I decide to release my music, you can buy it, or download it online, or not, I could give a fuck.
Thrash? Nah, not really. Usually listen to the likes of Ulver and Agalloch. Look, I'm sure your taste in music trumps mine any day. Allow me to apologize for offering my opinion on something highly subjective.
Thrash? I don't know how you came to that conclusion, but keep on assuming, it's worked out pretty well for you so far. Those influences are obvious, if you deny it, you're lying to yourself. Toodles fanboy.
A. You don't know shit about TOOL. B. You don't know shit about evolution. C. You are leaving the conversation because you are inadequate at discussing the topic. I'm no more a cynic than I am an optimist. In other words, I understand that you cannot reject something just because you don't understand, or dislike it. It won't simply go away. So, ignoring cynicism isn't a way to defeat it, or even move in the opposite direction. The best way to deal with something, is to observe it.
"i've reflected on myself for the past 5 years, trying to make myself a better, more understanding person." Why not reflect on your entire past? Did you just start observing and reflecting 5 years ago? There is something wrong with just about everything you're saying. You're saying observation is useless, because it does nothing. You bring up the civil war case, (which, like I said, is hilarious because it's cliche and irrelevant to the discussion) then make some other silly remarks.
You mean better? You keep saying "more successful", or "different", they aren't, they are not only less successful and different, but that difference is in quality. The songs suck, they are trying to feed on tool fans, by making songs that SIMULATE (and poorly) the sound of TOOL. The song 'spiders and flies' is dangerously close to 'ticks and leaches'. They try to rip tool off in the intro and it's obvious. They aren't influenced so much as trying to STEAL music.
I listen to all kinds of music. Having a favorite is a lot like having an opinion. The aphorism 'Everyone is entitled to their own opinion' doesn't actually hold up, though. Take for instance, when you ask a person 'what time is it?' are you asking for their opinion? What if they gave you the wrong time, would you respect that? These all time, absolute, never changing aphorisms don't actually exist. They are true in a sense, sure, but have no ontological (real) value. I am enlightened.
You don't listen to anything very closely. It's hilarious that you extrapolated what you did. To think of observation that way is laughable and idiotic. I'm not going to sit and teach you things, try thinking for yourself. Learn these things yourself, explore them, come back and then maybe we can have a conversation worth having. Till then, you are simply not cerebrally sufficient for the topic. I'm still laughing at your civil war analogy. Seriously good stuff, thanks.
I've listened to all of their music. I don't just make a naive and ill-formed opinion about a band after listening to one, or two songs. You're right, they do stray from the TOOL sound a bit, which is why I know they are just using it as clever bait, to snag casual TOOL fans. "DUR, I LIKE TOOL, THIS KINDA SOUNDS LIKE DEM, DUR. HERE I GOT 15 BUCKS, I'LL BUY THIS ALBUM, DUR" James Randi said a sucker is born every minute. He's right. Also, their lyrics are fucking trash.
It does seem like the band is not so much influenced by Tool, but tries to match their sound to make their own. If you are truly influenced by Tool's music, you would be influenced to create your own sound and direction. You can tell by the lyrics and simple composition of the songs that they are more interested in stealing/copying from Tool, than creating something for themselves. This is cookie cutter music. Amusing, but still not original art.
i agree that they used to write lyrics about the sick and selfish side of human beings, but hate only proves that we are less evolved than all other living creatures on this planet. ill leave you with your cynisism good will hunting because im tired of this. good luck with your music.
I find it extremely difficult to enjoy music, which is undeveloped, ripped off, commercialized, and highly mediocre. I do enjoy lots of REALLY good music, though. Intensely, in fact. I get a joy from music most people have to smoke something to get. Then I smoke something, listen to music and reach new incredible heights never witnessed before. O.o I'm actually somewhat of an inventor, I need music to spur new and fantastic thoughts, originality. I feed on it, I know where it rests.
Nice. doublepost. thank you youtube. anyway, this song is quite good, even if it's inferior to Tool. Btw, Isis beats Tool any day niginit. Same with God is an Astronaught. Try to argue this with me, you will lose.
This album slapped so hard back in the day
Yeah they're very much alike, imo.. and I agree to 110%, DST are very much underrated!
I dig the humility...
listen to the album A Lullaby for the Devil and tell me they sound like Tool. Don't think so.
i cant prove you wrong, but im open to the music you create, that anyone creates. there are artists out there that feed off of hate and negativity. i feel sorry for them. myself, i play the bass, i love it and will continue exploring the ever expanding oneness of all things until i do die. and when i do, my ideas and thoughts will stay behind. death only pushes us out of our shells not out of existence. there is no such thing as greater art because we are all one mind.

this music kick ass ..im a huge tool fan but both these bands are great except deadsoul tribe are criminally under rated
These one has some elements, Dream Theater like

The vocals are part of the whole prog mindset. Classic example is Psychotic Waltz - Another Prophet Song.
dude, there's a big difference between those two bands
I admit defeat.
*crashes into the ground*
