  • Since 1945, American power has been the principal guarantor of world order. Nearly 70 years on, what is America's place in today's global order, and do we stand at the dawn of a new and more chaotic age? How do the arrangements and understandings through which war is generally avoided, commerce generally protected, and the cause of civilization generally advanced, cease to function? Do natural and political events that seem unconnected actually relate, and together, portend a coming global disorder?
Watch as Bret Stephens, winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, deputy editorial page editor at the Wall Street Journal and author of its "Global View" column, analyzes the key threats to the global order today in conversation with Tikvah Executive Director Eric Cohen.
Mr. Stephens was filmed on March 20, 2014.

The last answer was the best one. Israel is not going to be loved by any concessions it makes for peace. If anything, being "nice" is interpreted as weakness, which makes people have contempt for Israel. On the other hand, Israel was never more respected than it was in the immediate aftermath of the 6 day war. That should be a lesson to Netanyahu and all the rest of them. When you release thousands of Arab murderers in return for one soldier, that breeds contempt from Israel's enemies. When you apologize to Turkey for taking out its terrorist flotilla, that breeds contempt. However, airstrikes against Hamas in serious retaliation for terrorism, breeds fear and respect. This is a basic premise that all Israeli leaders need to understand, and it should be the basis for operation, especially given that every action Israel takes is micro-scrutinized. The Mid-East is not the Mid-West; kindness will always be interpreted as weakness.

Americans are isolationists as a default. It does not matter when it is or what the situation is, Americans want isolationism. This was the default before and during WWII, and WWI, today, yesterday and tomorrow. The reasons are only the excuse.

You have to love how he attacks Krugman for his failed predictions about peak oil then goes on to make an equally false prediction about how US oil production will revive US manufacturing because the cost of oil will offset higher labor costs.
And then he predicts that interest rates are going to go up.
Then he predicts that Russia cannot survive with oil below $60 a barrel. Today it's at $44 and the Russian economy is set to grow.
    This guy is a clown.

This guy is absolutely without any real world knowledge: he just called for Israeli nuclear strike on Iran, how the Wall Street Journal can employ him as a journalist is beyond me.
