Love it when a problem comes to satisfactory solution. I do have a CJ5 which needs restoring including the sheetmetal. Great job! Gives me desire to start the rest at age 78.
The absolutely best informative troubleshooting Willys Flathead Engine, wont start video that I have ever seen. I will always remember the Timing gear problem. My project is on a Early 1942 MB Flat Grill Willys. Runs Grate and now I am doing the Body work. I also have two other Willys Jeeps one is a late 1940's and one is an early 1950's I keep in an old barn. Grate job on the Project Slow Devil. Thanks
Why all the hate? I'm enjoying it.. Everyone knew that this adventure would be as sketchy as hell, that's why they did it. Your doing the road trip I would never do - even in college - even if there was a girl at the end of the trip.
After you're back home pull the engine. Send it out to a competent rebuilder. While the engine is at the rebuilder do a brake job. Clean and lubricate every fitting and gear box. Don't forget the steering knuckles and the rear axle bearing zerk fittings near the brake backing plates. I hope you are mature enough respect this historic vehicle and not trash it like so many others have. I have been driving and enjoying mine for over 45 years. Willys got it right the first time. Everything after a CJ3A is only heavier and worse. Good Luck and enjoy. P.S. a Saturn (Warn) overdrive will help your highway speed considerably.
Chuck - curious why you make the statement about "everything after a CJ-3A is heavier and worse" - I have been looking at acquiring a CJ-3B (I like the high-hood look). Can you explain how much worse a 3B would be over a 3A? I could go 3A if convinced :)
Leak down test will show where the compression is leaking from. Crankcase, intake, exhaust, or cooling system. Piston rings, intake valves, exhaust valves, or head gasket/cracked head
The Climb you showed there at the last.....That Jeep would idle up that (or should) I've had these 0ld Jeeps the Torque on these are really great, they'll crawl over the toughest terrain.
Please, I am not a hater. I am surprised that it took them so long to figure out that it was the timing gear. The no compression and the funking way the distributor was working was a dead give away. Blown head gasket would drop 2 cylinders. Not all 4. I think that the biggest problem was to many chiefs and not enough indians here. I heard hints of hope in the previous video that the hope was cam or gears. To bad the instincts did not kick in. A 2 to 3 hour job instead of a lot of wasted time. Great job though and enjoyed watching.
Was this engine given hardened valve seats when rebuilt...those older engines were designed for leaded gas...running modern unleaded doesn’t properly lubricate the valves and has a tendency to eat the seats, which makes the valves not seal correctly
Would be hard to see all that technical stuff in the dark out there. The skies out there at night are the darkest I have ever experienced. Driving back to Moab from Dead Horse after stargazing the high beams didn't feel adequate.
Fiber timing gear. That's a new one on me. Looks like the Ford Model Ts have the same design. Maybe it's quieter than proper gears? Certainly not a failure I would've suspected. I found this series interesting, but kept muting the timelapse sections, because the looped trance shit got real old real quick.
Always tighten head bolts in a circular pattern starting in the center working your way outwards. Do at least 3 increasing tongues, ex. 25, 50, 80 psi.
I have to agree with some of the other viewers, these are hard to watch in full. I'm waiting for his other videos, which will hopefully be a little more interesting.
This music is the worst part of this video. it makes me wish i was deaf..also filming at night is never a good idea, especially when we watched an entire series to see this thing in Moab..Just a letdown to the series
You guys using that ether all the time is most likely the problem...excessive amounts of ether can crack pistons and piston rings, causing compression loss...limit the use of ether !!!
Love it when a problem comes to satisfactory solution. I do have a CJ5 which needs restoring including the sheetmetal. Great job! Gives me desire to start the rest at age 78.
Can't understand the hate for this series. I quite enjoyed it and I hope to see more of it in the future.
Congratulations! You're not dead! That fibrous timing gear is insane.

Nice road trip, sounds like a good holiday to relax !
I enjoyed the series, especially the Willys wheeling in Moab.

The Climb you showed there at the last.....That Jeep would idle up that (or should) I've had these 0ld Jeeps the Torque on these are really great, they'll crawl over the toughest terrain.
Thanks for posting this series of videos guys. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Remember that Jay Leno says "Breakin' down is part of the fun"...
surprised at the lack of a shot out to Lew who hooked you guys up with the cylinder head.
All that over a cam gear breaking lol glad u guys got it figured out .
Great series with the cj, but I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for the event with Chris from B is for Build.
Really enjoyed this series. Keep up the good work!

GOT TURNED ON TOYOUR CHANNEL BY CHRIS AT B IS FOR BUILD, AND LIKE YOUR VIDEOS AM EVEN WATCHING YOUR
OLDER ONES. PLEASE KEEP IT UP I ENJOY YOUR CONTENT
Drive 1800 miles to Moab to off-road, break down 1800 times, then once there film the off-roading at night...
Can't see anything. wtf?
You need to check the Jalopnik channel for daylight footage :)

New drinking game. Take a shot every time Freddy says "egregious"
or calls a truck or jeep a "car"
I feel like I would buy a backup crank sprocket knowing it's made of a fiber material.
Think about it this way it lasted 71 years you might be dead before it would need replaced again
Hey have ya'll ever though about shooting a video in the daytime???????
Great video!
Bro you and your friends have fun. I want to hang out man!
Where are the B for Build videos? I REALLY want you to get back to the Mercedes daily driver.
That subliminal Tavarish @ 2:47 tho....
20:13 I think I found Daniella's brother "how bout dat"
I saw him in one of Petrowich's vids.
Congrats on your awesome journey.

fuel issues?
not the music i expected at 1:40
Hey Tarvish
Yo
Tavarish glad you got it running though any idea of what color to maybe paint it?
Davarnish
2:47 what the fucking fuck
Do you mean tightening in a non cris-cross pattern or the warble extension on a torque wrench, because both are equally hilarious
You look so tired...
Why do people in America randomly stop at the side of the highway? That's super illegal and dangerous in Canada!
We do it to empty our drool cups.
I dig everything you guys are doing but for the love of god please stop calling the Jeep a Car!!!
hidden message at 2:46 ??
Nah, it's just an editing glich
6:43min 6:44 is where i live and i have a motor you can use
your timming is off thats why you have no compression
i would put a can of restore in it it cant hurt
Legend states that if you comment early enough, Tavarish will respond to you.
That is not true.
You should just drop a Chevy 350 in like I did my 84 CJ7
Daniel Wingard that's what I did in my 87 yj
13:37
Will-is not will eez
It's a Jeep! Not a car!
WTF 2:47?
Sorry but it’s not a car, it’s a Jeep, duh!
Please don't call the jeep a car if I do that to mine it will stop running as well. The jeep is a 1/4 ton truck.
wyllis MB and Ford GPW are the best american made cars,go devil engine jeep are real jeep other sucks
PLEASE, it’s not a car it’s a Jeep.

Dude stop calling the raptor a car lol
This music is the worst part of this video. it makes me wish i was deaf..also filming at night is never a good idea, especially when we watched an entire series to see this thing in Moab..Just a letdown to the series
Makes me cringe listening to the play by play by a non mechanic.
Good... now call it a day and move on...
You guys using that ether all the time is most likely the problem...excessive amounts of ether can crack pistons and piston rings, causing compression loss...limit the use of ether !!!
A busted timing gear?...you got lucky !
