Daniel is very perceptive regarding the nuances of human behaviours and interactions. Obviously this is what Gervais and Merchant build their comedy shows around, so Im impressed with how in tune you are with it, given that it's set in a UK context, the absurdities of such interactions are still universal.
The Office is one of the greatest british comedies of all time, it really grinds my gears when people say the US version is better , its no where near as good this is the very definition of lightening in a bottle
If you watch the outakes, the part with Martin Freeman when Ricky points at the chair and says "you could be in the hot seat" had to be done again and again as they both kept laughing
Keith the big bloke wasn't even in original scripts he was just meant to be in the background but they found him so naturally funny they put him in the show
Offically you are not supposed to drink during office hours, but I have worked in a few offices that ignored that policy, it all depends on the company you work for.
You guys need to react to the David Brent film after these. It’s amazing. He hires a band and goes on tour. You should also watch the Alan Partridge movie called Alpha Papa it’s set after the travel tavern days!
I lived in England for a year in the mid '00s and worked in an open office environment, and we used to go for a pint or 2 at lunchtime in the pub down the street. (I'm from N Ireland). I'm told it's not so laid back now in general culture, re alcohol during working hours.
You don't get as many groups going for a pint now, and if people do go somewhere in a group it's usually to eat. I know quite a few blokes who go for a pint though.
Gotta also watch the bloopers when you're done. The scene with Tim and Brent appraisal went on for like 50 odd takes. They're literally on the edge of cracking up at every line!
My first job when i turned 16 was an eye opener. Every one went to the pub for lunch. 2 or 3 pints, something to eat then back to work. I didnt. Too young.
I worked for a big corporate company in the late 90s, 2 hour lunch breaks in the pub across the road was a regular occurance. No one ever returned to the office shitfaced, and as long as the workload was cleared middle management didnt seem to mind.
I have a cider or beer every lunch, others do aswel but most dont, some say you shouldn't but you dont say you're going for a pint or two you just say you went for a walk.
The moment where Brent is gradually turning the appraisal with Dawn round to be all about him is almost creepy. And you can see how disillusioned she is when she doesn't say anything about it.
Back in the day, I was flicking through the TV guide and there was 'nowt on'. I saw 'The Office' and read 'reality' whilst skim-reading and passed on. However, there was nowt else which grabbed my fancy so, I thought I would give it a go. BBC 2. I had missed the fact that this was 'acting' as the opening credits had already rolled. I didn't recognise anyone. All I saw was a car-crash of embarrassment. "Oh, good God, that bloke is going to be eviscerated by the media and other bullies!"... "What a wanker!"... "Poor bugger!". I felt ill. But, I could not stop watching. I have never felt so relieved as when the credits rolled and I realised it wasn't real. it was a 'Mockumentary'. Thank all that is holy to everyone! Only then did I realise that I had witnessed a modern-day 'Faulty Towers'. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant can tap 'The Cringe' to perfection. The Office was a joy of Cringe!
When i was wo rking in aj office, a few times i had a few beers in the pub at dinnertime then went back for the afternoon. On one occasion my whole department went to the pub at dinner. (In the north dimner is the midday meal).
These days it'd be pretty rare to come into work smelling of booze and not get sent home. 70s and 80s, you'd have 4 pints at lunchtime and then get back operating the crane or whatever
In a local steel plant they had a pub on site, one of the foundry workers told me you could drink a couple of pints that would be sweated out of you in minutes.
Perhaps this behaviour might have been more common back in the 70s, but I’ve worked for a big company within the last ten years, where a two hour pub lunch, with at least four pints was almost considered the norm in the IT department - I’m not talking senior management, just the grunts - and this is every day, not just the odd special occasion. I felt a bit uncomfortable about it on my first day there, but HR just seemed to accept that was the culture, and did very little to discourage it. Now and then they’d suggest that people kept it to a couple of pints; that was it. Nobody batted an eyelid at someone stumbling into an afternoon meeting, halfway through, swearing their head off, clearly half drunk. It was quite an eye opener, and an almost liberating experience, though I’m not sure I’d recommend it to other companies, even though I was often happy to partake. 😂
Not so much any more cos its a fiver a pint but people used to drink at ounch tome all the time, especially on fridays, i used to work with a guy who couldnt drive past a oub without having a barley wine in there and i would get a pint, looking back i was lucky i got home every night, barley wine is fucking strong
lol i was one of the ones having a go about not getting the nuances :D sorry also... yes, you can go for a drink at lunch, at least you could, when I worked in the civil service a few years ago :)
You cant drink in manual jobs where for example you're operating machinery, but in office jobs it's quite acceptable to have a drink at lunch time and go back to work. (as long as you're not completely drunk)
I used to go out to the pub for lunch during the 90s no problem. And that was when I worked in a library. In fact half the staff would be in there. One bloke who worked in the Reference section was renowned for not coming back most afternoons. 😄
If y'all wanted to experience ENGLAND while it was STILL England, you missed the boat by AT LEAST 30 years. SERIOUSLY. My last trip to London was in 1994 and it was already transforming into something that was NOT England. Just sayin'.....
Going for drinks at lunchtime was standard when I first started working. It depends on the work environment - if you're working with like-minded men then it could be a good way to have a chat away from the workspace. You see what people are really like when you get down the pub.
In the early to late 2000’s I used to go to the pub a few times a week at lunchtime. In fact our department had a subsidised bar on site. It all got phased out though.
It’s not “the Office UK”. It’s the original. Yours is the Office USA. 😬 Ours will always be vastly superior to yours. It’s just how it is. So much of the subtle comedy seems to have gone over your head. 🤦🏻♂️
Martin Freeman had me in tears this morning as he read out a letter from a veteran who had to watch his friend die in Normandy .
I had to reach for the tissues watching it but then my grandmother said I shouldn’t be masturbating whilst watching it
Was it on xfm
Did you know that Martin is related to Morgan Freeman.

A lot of people who work in offices drink at lunchtime in UK, it's fairly standard practice

You really should watch the outtakes from the office, they are hilarious.

RIP Big Keith.
The guy who played Keith died a few weeks ago!😢 Legend!😔

The wardrobe choices in The Office were perfection. David Brents shoes are perfect for his character.
You can still find them.

i uses to work for the Civil Service. Every Friday we routinely went down the pub for a couple of pints at midday.

"Allways the same" In the 90s you could go out Friday lunch and have 4 pints and come back to the office after a 2 hour lunch and that was the norm
Most employers wouldn't tolerate staff taking a 2h lunch break then returning drunk.
@@DavidZ4-gg3dm They did in the 90s as everyone did. You could lunch a client and not even bother coming back

pub lunch is common in the uk..in german factories, they bring a beer out for everyone for lunch
In a local steel plant they had a pub on site, one of the foundry workers told me you could drink a couple of pints that would be sweated out of you in minutes.
Just wrote up appraisals recently at work waiting for meetings everybody hates these things and thinks they are pointless

I think that was Joel Beckett (Lee) you were looking at when they were outside after the fire drill….not Jeff from Peep Show.

Keith's appraisal is a masterpiece, up there with Gene Wilder's Sheriff scene from The Silver Streak.

No, you don't get. But that's ok.
You can't really get hammered at lunch anymore but a beer is still acceptable (depending on the job you have)
