0:38 'Willows along the palace wall, precious jade grazing their heads' the willows refer to the emperor's wives and that they are adorned in jade *note: I changed the translation from 'her head' to 'their heads' as 玉搔头 (yù sāo tóu) is just [jade / graze / head] so its not specific to one person
0:51 'With lonely wine, confined to spring’s worries / Past affairs too painful to speak about' connects back to the song Look sung by Lu Hu
2:26 'Willows along the palace wall, tossed into the wind, departing' tossed into the wind means that the women in the palace are forgotten and neglected / departing means that they are dying
2:32 the 'bow' is just a kowtow, which is to kneel and put your head to the ground in a bow / also 'more' is not the original chinese
2:58 'worn' is 碎了 (suì le) which is to be fragmented or broken / 'invaluable' is 千金 (qiān jīn) which directly means a thousand jin (pounds) of gold / so 'having a broken fur coat worth a thousand pounds in gold' / the fur coat is likely referring either to the empress's coat or to how lavish a life she leads as an empress, the broken part might mean that there have been many empresses before her who have worn the same, expensive coat

    ENGLISH LYRICS AND PINYIN
Willows along the palace wall, precious jade grazing her head
    Slender, red, soft hands
With lonely wine, confined to spring’s worries
Past affairs too painful to speak about
Willows along the palace wall, precious jade grazing her head
    Slender, red, soft hands
With lonely wine, confined to spring’s worries
Past affairs too painful to speak about
    Waving the sleeves, demeanor unchanged
Yearning to be able to worry
An unattainable dream, yet waking as the empress
Guarding against idle gossip into old age
Guarding against idle gossip into old age
Willows along the palace wall, tossed into the wind, departing
    One step, one more bow
Love lasting ages, hate lasting ages
Making a cocoon for one’s own imprisonment
Who can speak of a loving affection that has never rotten
Having a worn, invaluable fur coat
yet still intoxicated by the contradictory dream of a simple home in Wangjiang
Regardless of these numerous old worries
Who can speak of a loving affection that has never rotten
Having a worn, invaluable fur coat
yet still intoxicated by the contradictory dream of a simple home in Wangjiang
Regardless of these numerous old worries

in short, it's about the sad lives of historical women. women lined up, adorned in pretty gems with soft skin/soft hands to be admired like an object. she has no autonomy over her life or freedom and whittles her time away drinking and lost in painful memories growing up with her formative years trapped inside a cage, fighting not to be discarded. Even if she survived and came out on top, there are those that don't survive and were lost and forgotten, withered/dead. But what's at the top? Fancy clothes and riches, and people in awe and fear of you. They love you, they want to be you, they hate you, they want to get rid of you. Romance is dead within the palace walls and the romantic notion of the glamorous palace was in reality totally rotten. Romance could also allude to her hopes/dreams of counting on her partner (the king) to save her, to provide and protect her physically and emotionally, but that hope, too, is rotten. Clothed in the word's finest, she's far happier dreaming of a simple life in the country. (she's gonna die here, with her situation never improving)
It's a song about surviving but finding no joy in the world you live in. can't blame her for turning to wine. (but alcohol's a depressant, lol) it's depressing and bitter af but sung so, so prettily.
i thought your comment was interesting because whether or not it was translated into English, these lyrics are (very often) more poetic than lyrical. You need historical and cultural context to understand it and i just took a wild guess after finishing my poetry analysis assignment :)

@@Statement45I think the part of drinking lonely wine might refer to the fact that they didn't marry for love but for political reasons because of their families, since in a traditional chinese wedding the pair getting married drink wine from the same cup

    • @pandabamboochineselyrics
      @pandabamboochineselyrics  8 месяцев назад +1

@@Statement45Exactly this!! The song ends up carrying a lot of meaning once specific scenarios are understood. I try my best to balance what is being said and trying my best to make it understandable without changing it too much. Since this song also comes from Chinese historical drama, the song also carries the emotions of the Empress and her longing to merely live a simple life with her husband.

    • @pandabamboochineselyrics
      @pandabamboochineselyrics  8 месяцев назад +1

@@carmenmayo317This also!! In another song for this cdrama series, marriage is referenced in tying hair together. This also stresses that she's also drinking wine alone and in spring when love is typically symbolized to be blossoming. Instead, it it rotting and withering.

"An unattainable dream, yet waking as the empress". Surely, in normal Chinese meaning , it's more like "after the dream", and has Nothing to do with Empress...Hou means 'after'....my take
