I think very few “newbie” wine drinkers understand the subtleties of the flavors when describing wine. It’s not as though you will actually taste a green pepper but there are similar tasting or smelling “essences” that one can pick up on when really focusing on the smell and taste. I used to sell a lot of wine, it’s like selling cars, you have to pick up on what the buyer can comprehend and extrapolate to them in a way they understand.
Smells are created by mixing chemicals in a specific ratio. If you do a chemical analysis on a grape and a pepper, you'll probably find a ton of similar chemicals. That's why it's not unrealistic to smell a cherries, flowers, or even leather in your wine.
Super old comment, but I like to compare a tasting note to smell. It's not so much that you're tasting a green pepper or tobacco or chocolate; it's more like you're tasting what those things smell like. It can be kind of a hurdle to get over for people who are new to wine tasting like me. You normally associate a fruit with sweetness, and most people don't pay attention to what makes (let's say) a blackberry, a blackberry. In short, it's all about training your palate. It comes with practice, but a lot of people just want a buzz and a decent overall taste. Not that I blame them, even if I'm the analytical type lol
@Earthdemon1 It took me a long time just to be able to pick up a few tasting notes for whiskey. I’m now starting with wine, just exploring all the types. I’m not even close yet to distinguishing notes, just general taste and mouthfeel.
I feel this, I always tried to get people on board with the fruitier cabs or even start with some milder red blends. But if they hear tasting notes like leather and tobacco it's over lol
Oh my God ,why do I bother .. it's how it always left me feeling afterwards. Love you guys keep up the good work you make my day go by. Not feeling like I'm the only one
"High tannin content and nice and dry" has a bottle of sugar and chemicals on the table...Josh I believe it is called. Yea, enjoy your mass produced grape juice with a shot of vodka, a spoon of sugar, left over night in the fridge with some oak chips and hit with a load of food coloring right before it hits the bottle. Yum!
I think I read in _Wine for Dummies_ that cabernet sauvignon is the world's most popular wine varietal. Personally, I prefer sweet white wines (Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc, Moscato), but if I had to go with a red wine, it would be cabernet sauvignon. Also, it pairs really well with chocolate.
Green bell pepper and licorice are not secondary flavors. The flavors in oak are the secondary. The reason you can get green bell pepper is that Cabernet Sauvignon has these chemicals that cause the wine to have the green bell pepper and other vegetal note if picked under ripe. They get released during fermentation. Good quality Cabernet Sauvignon should be dry. I don’t mind green bell pepper aromas in Cabernet Sauvignon.
Nah mini gt should do more 50s American land yachts (because do we really need anymore r34s). I know glen has his thing about not wanting to do already plentiful castings, but there’s still good ones to do yet.
Can you do a short about wine for beginners? It's in every gas station I'm supermarket now and I don't even know how to pronounce a single one let alone what to pick one
Can we get a video on what “dry” means in the context of a liquor store / bar? I feel like it has something to do with sweetness but I am not confident in that metric
Are there any expensive (high quality is what I mean) Lime flavored drinks, any? I don’t know what drink I should get for my 21st to be my first, I want it to be memorable, and not something like a frat boy drink, even if it’s something a little more “complex”.
A good Cab Sauv tastes slightly sweeter. It's full of fruit flavours (blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, wimberry, redcurrants) and is very, very easy drinking. The best ones are from the new world like Australia and California and a nice one doesn't have to be expensive. You can get a great bottle for around £10 (UK) which is around the $13.50 mark in the USA. It's not harsh and not vinegary. A great red if you don't really drink a lot of wine.
Video turned into a airplane safety video half way through.

“ if you’re not that big on wine, most red wines taste the same.” Is the answer to anyone who asked for a caber net saber none.
These guys are awesome at explaining things
I could literally watch you guys taste drinks and your shorts all day long and never get bored.
Liquorice and bell pepper are primary notes, secondary notes are from winemaking, such as baking spices or vanilla from oak etc
dude behind the counter corrects him and then still says it wrong
Had to make sure the customer heard them by doubling the audio

Green bellpepper and licorice stood out to me also lol.
Chillean wines like casillero del diablo are an excellent bang for the buck.
I mean I heard what he was saying but licorice and green peppers were still instant red flags to my brain's taste simulators
Yeah I'm just Not a fan of either one. Especially the peppers. I don't eat them, why would I want to drink them???

Dry means that there isn’t an detectable sweetness. Most wines now days are fermented to have no sugar left.
Literally sell wine to wine enthusiasts in the store I work at and all I got was black licorice and bell peppers too.
Casillero del diablo ❤
sounds like your camera man got too close to your lapel mic at the end but good info all the same
casillero del diablo is my favourite if anyone wants it try it!!!
That is the important part.

I wonder how they can detect a milder flavor like freen bell pepper, then distinguish it from similiar flavors

Fun fact: bell peppers are the same, just depends on how ripe they are to deter an the color.
