Best Boxes for Cigar Box Guitars ??

- I get asked all the time if a certain size box is a good size for a cigar box guitar. That’s always a difficult question to answer. Here is a “Quick Peek” at the most recent acquisition of cigar boxes and then a look at some in my personal collection. Fifty boxes in all. Got box?

Did a square box a few years back, I flipped it 45° and made it a diamond shape. It's one of my favorites to jam on.
I got into wooden cigar boxes a few years ago to store my vintage baseball cards. I'm jealous because you have several real beauties.
The reason for the musical notes impressed on the Avo Uvezian boxes is because Avo was a musician/composer before he got into making cigars. He co-wrote Strangers In The Night.
This is just a mere story told Avo himself. There is literally no credible source who has verified this. Avo was a musician and did play in some bands, but thats about the extent of his musical "career".

I have an old cigar box that belonged to my grandfather. I also built a crystal radio in a cigar box when I was a young kid.
That Hair of the Dog box ROCKS!! Way cool!! I just scored about 200-300 cigar boxes this past weekend!!

Hey Brother!
Suggestion: Take the Colossal Roi-Tan with the reinforced structure and make a Dual Range-Double Necked Cigar Guitar; one 3 string and one 4 string, each with different string set ups that would allow the guitarist to play and amazing range of tunes without having to re-tune!
Use Double Pick Ups (Humbuckers), Double Springs, and ONLY high end tuners and hardware (quailty components all the way around). You could use some more purpleheart for one neck and some curly maple for the other neck. I'd suggest some cocobolo inserts for the fret marks on the side of the neck on the curly maple, and some bird's eye maple for the fret markings on the purple heart neck.
It'd all be downhill after you made that Colossal Double Necked Cigar Box Guitar; being able to come up with something to top that would be a difficult proposition!

i really enjoyed seeing that video. I was beginning to think that I might be the only person out there that just gets a charge out of looking for cigar box guitar bodies. My Father Cigar boxes are great for selling a guitar to a newbe CBG player. Some of their graphics have a lot of great visual appeal. Java boxes on the other hand make a quality instrument. I really get what your thought process is when looking. Oddly enough, some of my best builds have come from boxes that I just happened to run across at the odd thrift shop here and there, usually nondescript and and non desirable collector items.
You never know what you are going to find... and where or when... always be on the lookout!!
That hair of the dog box is awesome.
It's a box of 10 sticks put out by Diesel. Priced not to bad at around $80. So $8 a stick plus the shipping.
I just had a cbg made from a “ my fathers cigar” box. Sounds amazing.

We just do not see these in the UK- without a visit to a specialist retailer who will charge you £10 and up per box. That’s one reason why I stopped using cigar boxes. The other was that they’re restricting- as a shipwright friend of mine said “Why are you making hardwood necks fit softwood boxes when you could build boxes to fit the necks?” One thing we can get is great hardwood (2mm thick oak- wow!) and A4 size poplar ply, which is great for sculpting soundholes. I suppose you work with what you can get...
I went to Barcelona and they have loads of tobacconists. The shop owners just gave them away, even though I tried to pay for them. A good tip is to learn to say "teniu alguna caixa de cigarrets buida a la venda?" Speak Catalan to them and they are a lot more amenable than if you speak Spanish. Google translate is very handy for this, as they have Catalan as one of the language you can download.
Yep! Those are definitely the boxes that make the best guitars. I never sand off, or modify, the appearance of the boxes in any way. I just think the graphics are too cool and eye-catching.
I would like to see a cbg made out of a primeo cigerllo box... Maybe like a diddly bow. Or a uke...

You should try a macanudo cafe with a glass of white. Watch a few videos on how cigars are made from field to final product. It's an absolute art form. Spurgeon a great preacher from the past loved cigars. It's more of a flavor thing and a relaxing effect of concentration of the cigar and flavor

Some amazing boxes there, Del! And, like you say, some too good for CBG's. That Roi-Tan looks bigger than the body of a six-string :-)
2:53 the so-called cream colored one is likely a box that sat in the shop for quite a long time and that is actually smoke stained. I had tons of fun watching this because as you reviewed your pickings, I was saying: had that, and that, not that, and that; those are overrated, toured that factory, had that, etc. The My Father Jaime Garcia was SOO good, and, that was the first full box I ever bought. If you search the Nicaraguan boxes, you will find the city name of Esteli, and I actually retired there for a year.
The Camacho boxes are all good, but Rocky Patel has one out now that when the shop received it, I wondered what you could do with it. I've heard of Hair Of The Dog because people come in the shop and ask for it but I had never seen the box, so that was a treat. As for the cedar, yes, all of them are made of Spanish cedar. BTW, I am also a Brother in Christ

I've tried to score some boxes in the past year. EVERY place was more than willing to sell me a box for anywhere from $5-20/box. Granted these were all cigar stores or smoke-shops and they have to make a buck but I just wanted one or two to start with. Didn't want to mess up a $20 box on my first CBG.
Luckily found 4 boxes (St Louis Rey) at they local Goodwill store for $1/each.
Del, I was just wondering, instead of a battery for the bridge, wouldn’t it be cool to instead use one of those cigar tubes? They are usually made from metal and look the right size. If they have their cap on they will be a bit stronger

What can one expect to pay for a box? Should I go to a cigar shop? When they open! This virus thing gets in the way of everything! Good thing I had this old box in the basement. Dale, the AVO box is pronounced (Ahhh-Vo) Something you will L-O-V-E.... Avo was a musician before becoming a cigar king. He actually wrote the song "Strangers in the Night" recorded by Frank Sinatra.

Have you ever used a JFR Lunatic box? I think those boxes make the best acoustic guitars. Also, those Avo boxes are awesome!

by me in New Jersey boxes sell for about $1 each
Be careful with the plastic red end pieces on the Arturo Fuente Boxes they R Thin Plastic and crack easily.wish I could add pictures I tried to make a six string Arturo Fuente because I Had a neck and thought it would make a neat cigar box guitar but the red end pieces R Thin plastic and pocket end cracket so pre drill any holes and careful if you cut with a saw probably a coping saw might work best just be careful not to crack the plastic ends

I'd assume, and I'd probably be wrong in some way, that the size/dimensions of the box wouldn't have much of an effect on an electric guitar, but for an acoustic guitar I'd assume that the smaller the box the quieter it would be, larger boxes allowing for more reverberation? I've never played a cigar box guitar, or a store bought guitar for that matter, but I have a newfound interest in them as well as most of the blue grass style string instruments. What do you normally ask for a cigar box guitar? I'd like to make my own but I would definitely mess it up. I'm from Albuquerque, sorry to hear about your friend.

Del, I don't remember ever seeing you use a hard tail bridge in one of your builds. Seems like a personal preference? Could you share your reasons? I've just completed an electric cbg build using one and had to add so much more bridge support in the box that I'm not a fan.
I incorporate a ‘back angle’ Into my builds which requires a “higher” bridge for proper action. The hard tail doesn’t adjust high enough with having a shim or a block. I’ve tried using them but I like higher action near the saddle so my pick doesn’t hit the box

Can anyone tell me what is a reasonable amount to pay for an empty cigar box? I see a ton of them listed on Facebook Marketplace for about $5 - $10 each. Is it better to look for more vintage boxes versus newer ones?

i always strive for proper proportion ... it will depend on your scale length (size of the instrument)
Dell, what do you normally pay for your Cigar Boxes. I haven't been to my cigar store lately, . but he charged at the time $2 a box. Also found a few places in Albany, NY that only charge $2 one place they were almost stacked to the ceiling, heck of a thing if you wanted the one on the bottom.

Americans smoke a lot of cigars, I can't remember the last time I saw someone smoke a cigar
Mostly because cigar smokers smoke at home or in cigar lounges. Cigar lounges are found in you're local cigar shops. Finding a cigar smoker in public is a rarity since most cigars take 30 minutes to an hour and a half to smoke. And most people complain about cigars in smoking bars which are becoming more and more of a rarity themselves.
