Is it my imagination or is Momotaro becoming more and more impatient and aggressive toward Genki? Even when she's in estrus he seems cold and indifferent toward her. Don't forget she came from a situation were she lost status within the group she was in, and anxiety over that loss drove her to self mutalate. I worry that Momotaro's treatment of her is going to push her back into that behavior.
Yes. They are trapped in this prison for human entertainment. Hes miserable. She is also pretty old and dealing with various health issues. Not sure shes gonna be around too much longer.
It took little Kenny to stand up and protect his mother from fat Momo. Did you see Kenny at 5.20 what looks like to me as if him saying to momo "You touch my mon again and I'll break your F***ing arm" and proudly walks off.

@Carmen L. Martinez's I have 2 dogs, a pug & rat terrier! They do the samething, only while eating. The pug is always hungry. I think they were bred with a pot belly pigLOL.
They were separating them at feeding time.
Think they need to bring in the “gorilla police” to do an investigation.😘

I’ve been researching online now that I have become a gorilla addict, a full grown silverback requires about 60 lbs of food every day at least.

Bless Momma Genki, she doesn't deserve that but Momotaro should of stayed with his mother Momoko for a much longer time. I feel bad for him too, his daddy died already when he was born. And they let Genki out too early, she wasn't ready to be in a group. She was too young and weaker in the hierarchy of females. Poor Genki, love her so much. I'm glad Little Kintaro & Gentaro wanted to protect her it looked like. Blessings of love, peace, & patience, & happiness for this very, very special family!!! 🙏 💞🦍🥬🥜🥕🌞

That was so hard to watch! Please do something to keep Genki safe from Momotaro. Somehow Momotaro needs to be isolated or something.
Genki does not deserve to be abused by Momotaro. He is too big and too strong. Genki is too old to defend herself. I love momo but he needs to stop.
This video is very selective with how it presents the information you need. The way it was edited leaves a lot of information out. The fight starts when Momo is already looking in that direction before he attacked. What happened right before that? Why was that cut out? Did he warn her about anything? She’s in the back corner area with both the kids, it looks like she’s standing over a pile of straw and grass, away from his eating area. The music covers any verbal cues as well. Was Kintaro chirping, did Genki grunt about something? Some comments seem to believe it’s about food, why is that? Unlike the wild, the zoo should provide enough food so that it’s never a resource to fight over. Most of the other zoo gorillas don’t fight over food, they eat quietly in their personal areas. Why not this family?

with apologies if I misunderstood I am not anglophone. But I think I read an explanation about the food of all the members of this troop compared to other gorilla families. You left out one important detail. Momotaro grew up without a father figure, remained long alone and has a tiny tolerance for sharing food. It is as peaceful regularly as it is particularly violent when it comes to food. That’s why the guards have to separate them often and let the silverback eat alone.

@@dominiquejacqueline5115 thank you. I knew about his lack of a father or even an adult male role model. Many have said that’s why he has difficulty mating with Genki. He’d never seen how to do it. I did NOT know the keepers are aware of his food aggressive behavior and that’s even the reason they are fed separately. I think I understand everything except what you meant by the food compared to other zoo’s. Is it better or worse?
This happened because Genki started eating the food he had stockpiled. When Momotaro saw her eating it, he got angry.
Momotaro lived with Monta in Chiba zoo for about a year while they tried to separate him from his mother, Momoko. So he has ad some time living with a male albeit not as long as he would’ve with a biological father.

Momo is mounting the kids (while ago) and thrusting the air. So maybe his aggression could be around mating? But also he’s the leader and needs to ensure there is food for everyone (instinctually) and Genki eats everything she can get. Not blaming her in anyway, it’s sad. But we as humans will probably never know. However the attacks are always when she eating, usually grass too. Maybe it’s food Momo put aside for himself or thought she’s not leaving enough for the rest of the family? It didn’t look just random he was watching her.
Oh please Momo dont attack Genki. She is a quiet soul and did nothing to hurt you.
I once again want to stress that Genki's seemingly not bothered, and going back to eating, is probably her way of calming herself. It's well known that animals in captivity for different reasons overeat, and use food to alleviate stress!

He had some pretty bad health issues the summer before last (I think it was). So I dont want to blame him, and the cirkumstances of their captive surroundings are not the best, no matter what! Momo's upbringing was not optimal either, bc of he not having a father silverback or a troop present to help foster him!

There has been quite a few attacks lately on sweet Genki! Maybe Momotaro need some solitary confinement a/o check up to find out if he is ok! I really hope gorilla house staff will look into the lately beatings of Genki, this cannot be allowed to go on until she's hurt for real! The boys were trying to go between mum and dad, but it happend to fast.

I've read through many of the comments here. The information on Genki's parents has been extremely difficult to uncover. Her father was named 'Makk'. Her mother 'Hiromi',( sometimes spelled Hirome). Genki's mother was brutally attacked by a silverback named 'Gon'. She died from her injuries. If anyone has more information or 'leads' please share what you know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! My info may be incorrect. If so, please speak up, I only seek to learn the truth.

The artificial environments have to part of the problem. They are right on top of each other every, single day. They look very well cared for but there is no place like nature. I wish they had a larger environment to explore with more stimulation. I can't help but think that would help this problem of territoriality.

It wasn’t too bad since Genki immediately returned and started stuffing her mouth again. But Momo’s moods are often explosive and unpredictable!! I think this whole family is miserable when Momo starts acting up like this!!

I think someone made a good point. All we see are little flicks of their daily life. We can’t base all of our opinions on a meager amount of data, as in these video. I wish we could not hear visitors or any music. I hate that they hear the visitors chatter away. Can you imagine!?

Genki’s mother died from her partners Gon (huge silverback) severe laceration attacks as a result of an altercation between them. Silverbacks are no joke, they can hurt their partners to death. Hope Genki didn’t get hurt to bad, her sweet boys were right beside her too when dad attacked her, lol, then Genki hurried over and grab a handful and ate it, she was like f%$& you daddio, jerk!

A essa altura a Genki já tinha ido para Kioto-Japão. Não viu o Momotaro nascer.

It's just so sad how both parents are food aggressive because there's never enough it's almost the same thing everyday grass and when there is something good that's when greedy Momo gets crazy...look at the poor children trying to find something to eat that Momo or genki aren't hogging...this zoo has had this problem for awhile now and nothing really has been changed... I'm guessing it's not of importance to them....

They need more room. Why can't the owner of the zoo build a bigger enclosure with trees and grass, and room for them to run. I think they have earned it by now. Seeing that was very disturbing.. They have no money. They also eat restaurant scraps.
Besides the cost, the zoo in its current layout and animal density, probably does not have any space to give to the gorillas. This is the second oldest zoos in Japan est. 1903, and it has like a city block of space inside the limits of Kyoto City, which is also the owner of the zoo.
If I was the owner of this zoo - I would change direction to only keep (some of) the monkeys and great apes in need of captive breeding because of risk of extinction in the wild! And to give them the outmost housing and outside areas possible, within the limits given!

Kintaro is not being abused. I don’t know why humans insist on looking at animal behaviors and trying to assign human beliefs to them. Genki should not be allowed to pig out the way she does because of her age and health. I personally believe the keepers should feed Genki alone and a reduced amount. If her health isn’t taken seriously she could end up dying related to a co-morbid condition.

I couldn’t agree more! A lot of people humanize and put our moral compass in the head of the gorillas (or chimps, etc..). They may be closely related to humans but they behave quite different. In gorilla groups and chimps as well, the males dominate other males and especially the females and their young. The females are treated like absolute crap in our eyes. But in nature that is how they behave. Some gorillas in captivity will be a perfect “dad” and “husband” to the female but that is only seen in captivity. That attack wasn’t bad at all. He was merely asserting his status as boss. Plus I’m sure he wanted to get as much food as he possibly could too. That’s another common thing with the great apes. The males, especially high ranking males, will take as much food as they can get. If they think someone else in the group has had too much, he will put them in their place and/or take it from them. It’s not that common for a male to attack a female to the point of killing her, but it does happen sometimes. It’s just an example of how, despite being extremely close relatives of humans, they are still very much wild animals with very different behaviors.

Genki is not particularily food aggressive besides "normal" gorilla protectiveness of food. However she has a great deal of (probably) anxiety and therefore she tries to comfort herself through her compulsive obsession with food! //Thats my interpretation from videos and a background from studies of animal behaviour! Also, not only my opinion!
