Hi. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the 9500/10500 SSV are both rated to hold #80 braid and have 40lbs of drag pressure. Both models would be plenty to handle a 220+ lb catfish. We appreciate your support.
The "threshold" for "made in USA" on Penn reels is about $249 retail. Although it varies a bit, the "threshold" for "made in Japan" from the various Japanese mfrs is about $349, otherwise they are also made in China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, etc.
Penn makes over 30 different reel models in the USA, plus another 11 "stock" bail/color options, plus everything in the "Custom Shop" is made right in Philadelphia. Two new "USA" models came out this year, and at least 5 new "USA" models will come out in 2013.
The launch date for the LL models was scheduled for January and we have been shipping these models as promised but the demand is much greater than the supply at the moment. Please keep checking your local dealer or even check around on line as there are some stores that have these reels in stock. Thanks for the support.
My 6500 has been a beast. I've caught several 60+ inch sharks. Several nice grouper, and a few 40+ inch redfish. I also use a 4500 slammer 3. I love my penn reels. Would love to see stainless steel main gear and pinion gear across the board. As well as the power knob like the slammer has. The power knob would be a great addition to the spinfisher.
@@PENNfishing hoping to pick up a slammer 4 2500 in the spring. I do a lot of kayak fishing for stripers and various other species and want to try the 2500 out and see how it handles large fish.
Hi Jordan, the rod is labeled Spinfisher V. It is a graphite composite blank with stainless steel guides and aluminum oxide inserts. Thank you for fishing PENN, we appreciate your support.
No, there are a few collectors that have them out there but they can be very hard to find. You can search by the model you are looking for or some people call them the "greenie".
I have this penn spinfisher. Its realy great product. I'm using bullet proof 220 lb leader line and never have any problem. Its working prfectly fine and its worth of money.Material look great and solid i mean tough. Its 100 % water proof. Salt can't harm inside. You can fishing in rain or standing in water. Design is very cool. You can change handle to left or right side this feature i kinda like. To be honest penn this is my first product from you guys and u inpress me. I RECOMEND PRODUCT :)
The "threshold" for "made in USA" for Penn reels is at about $249 retail, and the models above that price are indeed produced in the Philadelphia plant. The SSV reels range from $139-$199. The Penn spinning reel series that is US-made is the Torque TRQ series [9 models]
Not every reel will come out the box with a perfect line lay that is why we put two plastic washers in the box so that you can shim the spool for better line lay if needed. Detailed directions are in the owner’s manual on how to install the washers.
For the wind knots yes the number one reason for wind knots is over filling the spool with line. The SSV's comes with line capacity rings so if you fill the spool up to the outer most line then you should not have any issues with wind knots. If you go past the outer most line then you will most likely have issues.
Hi, The Battle, Sargus and Fierce are all available in 1000 and 2000 sizes if you are looking for a smaller reel. Most anglers didn't need a smaller than 3500 in the Spinfisher V.
Penn currently makes over 30 different reel models in the USA, along with another 11 "stock" color/bail options, plus everything in the "Custom Color Shop". Two new "USA models were introduced at the ICAST Show this week, and at least 4 more USA models will be introduced at next year's show.
Great question. Yes, the new 3500 Spinfisher V is replacing the 4th Generation Spinfisher (430 SSg) and the Slammer 360. Also, the 3500 is similar to the Battle 3000 in size and line capacities. In addition, the 3500 is the smallest Spinfisher in the new series.
I just bought the V 7500 about an hour ago. With a Penn rampage rod. Can't fkg wait to take em out for a ride in the " Salt life " so happy. Thank The Snook Nook in Jensen Beach for the assist. + 40lb Spiderwire Blue Camo Braid. Here fishy, fishy, fishy got huge Penn Slammer Drag for you.
the "threshold" for "Made in USA" on Penn is at $249. For the various Japanese mfrs, the "threshold" for "made in Japan" is around $349; all reels below that line are made in China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, etc.
I Thank You for the quick reply. I think these were the last series before they were sent to the asian market for manufacture ? Always wanted to add a new reel but couldn't justify the expense when I had my greenies and never replaced any parts on them. Amazing, especially when I have seen failures on the jetty or beach or through discussions of drags failing or gears being crunched by different manufacturers of newer equipment reels. And I never had a bail snap back losing any plugs. I and several other old timers with the old Penn greenies and some Mitchells would look at each other and chuckle listening to some guys curse their reels up and down at what they cost them and losing that striper. I have watched someone open up a Chinese reel of popular name only to see him remove roughly 40 pieces or so for a good cleaning and re-lube. I swear they make a throwaway so you buy another. I merely remove under ten pieces, clean, grease and assemble all in under one hour while enjoying a cup of coffee. Good solid made parts. I know the new reels are smooth and all with so many bearings, but I feel proud to see my reels on the beach vs. those shiny new alloy reels sparking in the morning sun.. There are some 550ss and 650ss in good looking condition on ebay roughly around $80.00 plus shipping. But I also see some 704's for $60 to $70.00. Really? I say I have a good investment in my shed. Contemplating whether i should buy one or not. A couple of the guys gave me that stare down when I mentioned I was looking to add one to a lonely 10' pole I have home. But as long as it's a US made Penn I should be welcomes to fish shoulder to shoulder with them. It's a family thing I guess you could say. Cheers and Tight Lines to all.
Hi. Thanks for the kind words. We are sorry to hear about your kayak incident, but it happens to the best of us. We are sure you will love the all new Spinfisher V especially if you take it on your kayak (It is fully sealed to eliminate the possibility of salt getting into the reel). We appreciate your support.
Good choice; BTW there is a full "Penn West Coast Preview" on RUclips that covers the Spinfishers, Torques, Squalls, and more specifically for the California/Baja angler.
LL stands for Live Liner and is built for live bait fishing. It has a switch you can flip to disengage the front drag to allow the bait to swim freely for the most natural presentation. It automatically re-engages when you reel in.
Penn's "threshold" for made in USA is at about $249. This SSV series runs $139-$199, and so are Chinese production. the Penn Torque TRQ series spinning reels [9 models] are USA production, but are of course a little more expensive than the SSV's.
StuckonLand, the Rampage Boat rod would be a great fit with the 10500. Better yet, all rods in the Rampage family are under $100 which is ideal. Thanks for the question.
Hi Thang, There are at least a dozen new SSV models; too many to all come out at once. The smaller sizes came out in the fall of 2012. The larger sizes and all of the "Liveliner" models were always scheduled for early 2013 introduction. Hopefully they will be in stores soon. In late 2013 you should also see a "longcast spool" model, and also a "bail-less" model.
You don't specify what size line you plan to use or you have a preferred rod length, but the Penn Bluewater Carnage CARJG2050S70 can handle large fish and heavy drag, but is still light enough to be fun and cast smaller lures if necessary, and would balance well with a SSV4500.
A lot of fishing choices comes down to the angler's personal preference, as a manufacturer we try to draw a portfolio of product that appeals to those preferences.
The drags on the SSV's make plenty of noise. If you have a reel and the drag clicker is not very loud check under the spool and remove some of the grease from the clicker mechanism as the grease acts as a muffle.
The "threshold" for "Made in USA" on Penn reels is $249; the Penn Torque spinning reel series [3 different sizes, 5, 7, 9, plus bail or no bail options] is indeed "Made in USA", right in the Philadelphia plant where they have always been bade. Reels under $200 are still quite popular; the choice is make the offshore or simply stop making them.
This is really hard to answer because you have so many things to consider. The size of the reel, the rod that you are using, the line that you are using all play a big role in how far you can cast a 1 oz plug.
I fish Tribs for salmon , I don’t need the saltwater protection but it helps ? I need the drag more than anything and these reels perform flawlessly ..... I have the 3500 for the little guys and the 5500 spinfisher V and the 5500 penn slammer III all with an extra spool for the big Kings when they move in . I lightly clean my reels and put a drop of oil here and there on occasion and have never had a problem ever . Mind you I am nowhere near pushing these reels to there limits . Oh I also have an older penn slammer 560 and the original penn battle that I have passed down to my son both of which are still like new after hundreds and hundreds of salmon . Greased the drags for him and upgraded the slammer 560 with carbontex and there’s no doubt he will one day be passing all of these reels down to his children . Penn is second to none when it comes to reliability ..... you might not get the smoothest but when your a 4 mile walk from your vehicle you trust the durability more than anything .
Tough to get one rod that does both of those well, but the Bluewater Carnage Jigging Rod CARJG65100S64 or CARJG80-130S60 do a great job of holding big fish out of the rigs, and the CARBW3050S70 casts well for most inshore/offshore species.
Hi Jesse, our recommendation is the Prevail 12' rods. PRESF2040S12 is the model number. You can find them on our site pennreels com. (We can't include URL's here, per RUclips, apologies.)
Best regards from Danube river in Croatia. We are looking forward to new Spinfisher V beacouse Slammer and SSM moleds are very popular in Croatia. Also hope that price wont dramatically rise.
I'd love to see this reel with the brass main gear and stainless steel pinion , like the Z reels. For the record my spinfisher v reels have preformed well so far..Alan Hawk summed it up nicely , "a beefed up slammer" and the slammer was damn good reel.
I would say a SSV5500 would ge a good size for surf fishing but would be a little big for throwing small artificail lures like DOA's. I would say you would need a SSV3500 or SSV4500 on a Legion or Regiment (LEGIN815S70 or REGIN815S70) inshore rod for light artifical use and then for surf fishing I would suggest looking at the Prevail series of rods for the SSV5500. The PRESF1220S90 would be a perfect surf combo.
I grew up with and still have and fish with my old 710 greenies and a 704, just basic wash down my at the end of day and opened and cleaned and re-greased every December as I slow down beach/jetty fishing. Am much older now and would like to find that sweet spot in between a 710 and 704, preferably in the ss series. So would the 550ss, 650ss or 750ss be that sweet spot with a 10 or 11' pole. ?
+roadrunner Appreciate your support and loyalty, roadrunner. The 550ss would be the closest in size between the 710 and 704, however the 650ss would be a better pairing to a 10’-11’ rod. The metal SS series was discontinued over 25 years ago though, you'l need to look on EBay or shop the swap meets to purchase one.
Armando, max drag on the SSV ranges from 20 to 40lbs, you can see the specs for all models at the bottom of the product page on our web site - pennreels
With all fishing tackle if you take good care of it you should hardly have any issues. Yes the SSV or Torque Spinning reel would be the best reel for the application if you need a spinning reel. How much line capacity are you looking for? The SSV8500, SSV9500, or SSV10500 would get the job done.
I just bought the 8500 LL, pretty stoked, its my first ever expensive reel, matched it with the Penn Battalion Rod. Just wondering though on this video why every reel I saw was rigged for left hand reeling? Is that a Northern Hemisphere thing? or just by chance all these fellas left handed? Coz thats uncanny.
The smallest size is the SSV3500, which holds 210 yards of 8-pound monofilament, or 165 yards of 20-pound braid. perfect for inland stripers, most catfish, and light-duty surfcasting.
The perfect rods for the SSV10500 is going to be the PENN Bluewater Carnage(CARBW3050S70) or PENN Ally (ALLBW3050S70). Both rods have plenty of back bone and can handle the extreme drag of the SSV.
Does the 3500 size in the Spinfisher V correlate to the Slammer 360 size? Is there anything small like the Slammer 260 in the Spinfisher V series or is the 3500 the smallest there is. If the 3500 size is similar to a Battle 3000, that would be fine. I like a spinning reel that is lightweight for saltwater usage but still able to handle the pressure as well as being durable!
A friend got me a 10500 about a year back yesterday we were taking it out for a test and review on the beach after trying to jam my rod into the sand the gamble hit a rock and the reel root broke I honestly don’t want to put it down because I’ve never really gotten to use it was wondering if you guys sell the housing so I can probably transfer everything over to a new housing or if the foot can be welded some how
What type of fishing will you be doing with the SSV5500? Will you be using mono or braid? We make several rods at various price points for almost all applications.
I just need a good reek for catching 25-40 saltwater bass of a boat, and also a reel to cast off the rocks somewhere occasionally? which one do u suggest, I will buy immediately lol
How about a maintenance video for these reels. I take things apart all the time with no issue but this reel kicks my ass. I can get the handle off, undo the screws that hold the side plate in place but I cant get it completely off. Reel has been running strong for over a year, but its time for maintenance and I cant get in the damn thing.
i have hesitate in the past because the spinners from pen are on the heavy side but bought a new battle and went kayak fishing for the first time in my life and forgot one of the rules that your body follow your head and tip my yak and the rod and reel went to the bottom at about 40 feet of water and you know the little ting fish all day wiout issue,if you want a shimano reel that is full metal contruction prepare to spend some serious cash im sold on the new reel and i want it bad
What would be a good rod for the 10500? 7ft for a boat rod. I'm getting a new arsenal of just penn reel's. I want it to be able to catch the biggest fish the 10500 can handle, be braid worthy, and be under $100 preferably.
+Tarpon World Check out the Carnage II jigging rods. We recommend this model for the SSV 10500 CARJGII80200S60. www.pennfishing.com/penn-rods-spinning-rods-penn-carnage-ii/1371189.html#q=carnage%2520ii&start=5
I have a Penn 716 spinfisher (greenie) that I've used for 20 years , I've often wondered what year those were produced? I'm pretty sure it's Penn's original model.
@tunanorth really? tgats good to know i know alot of the big conventional reels are made here but alot of the spinning are not i dont do any big boat big reel.fishing only offshore kayak fishing so the spinning reels is all i need i just like yo supporr more of.the usa made models
I bought the ssv 10500 for spoonbill snagging and I brought a 100 lb fish with 100 lb braid to a dead stop in the Missouri River and landed it with ease! What sise would be good for river fishing walleyes? I was thinking the ssv 5500? Need the power for fishing in current.
Hi Brad, you can land on the size that's right for you based on the pound test of line you'd like to fish. The SSV 5500 is rated for 10-15# mono or 20-40# braid. Our website shows the full specs for each reel, pennfishing.com, just let us know if you have further questions.
PENNfishing ... I fish slow but strong current in the Red River of North Dakota I usually use between 10 pound and 20 pound model or 20 to 40 pound braid and I need at least 250 yards of mono or braid. when the fish get into the current it's hard to bring them back through to my side. sometimes you hook into a great big catfish so I need a good reel to aid in stopping that.
I am a passionate angler from Serbia. In my opinion you produce the best reels.I have couple of 950 SSm's and 650 SSm's.My favourite fish is catfish (european) and I was wondering if you could tell me are 950 SSm and SSV 9500/10500 capable for 100 kg+ catfish.
I would look at the Legion and Regiment inshore series of rods. Any of the 8-15 and 10-17lb rods in both series would be a perfect match for the SSV4500.
I have 2 penn spinfisher 8000LL is there anyway to loosen or remove the rear drag I don't want the fish to feel any tension I fish for alligator gar and want the live line to be super smooth with zero tension
ThHi, Eddie. This rear drag is set at a light drag almost 0, but you can loosen it by turning it counter clock-wise, and you would to set it to your feel/liking.
Penn is definitely on my top list....the 10500 models are pure work horses!!! ❤️😍

love penn rods and reels...

Tough to get one rod that does both of those well, but the Bluewater Carnage Jigging Rod CARJG65100S64 or CARJG80-130S60 do a great job of holding big fish out of the rigs, and the CARBW3050S70 casts well for most inshore/offshore species.

Looks like its going to be the best again!
I would look at the Prevail surf rod series. I would go with a 15-30 or 20-40 model.
Looks like a nice rod on the table i really like the metal reel keeper and seating what rod is that?
I just bought the 8500 LL, pretty stoked, its my first ever expensive reel, matched it with the Penn Battalion Rod.
Just wondering though on this video why every reel I saw was rigged for left hand reeling? Is that a Northern Hemisphere thing? or just by chance all these fellas left handed? Coz thats uncanny.
The smallest size is the SSV3500, which holds 210 yards of 8-pound monofilament, or 165 yards of 20-pound braid. perfect for inland stripers, most catfish, and light-duty surfcasting.
Suport for popping ?
The perfect rods for the SSV10500 is going to be the PENN Bluewater Carnage(CARBW3050S70) or PENN Ally (ALLBW3050S70). Both rods have plenty of back bone and can handle the extreme drag of the SSV.
My favourite reel,I'm Indonesia
Does the 3500 size in the Spinfisher V correlate to the Slammer 360 size? Is there anything small like the Slammer 260 in the Spinfisher V series or is the 3500 the smallest there is. If the 3500 size is similar to a Battle 3000, that would be fine. I like a spinning reel that is lightweight for saltwater usage but still able to handle the pressure as well as being durable!
3500,4500 - $139.95
4500LL, 5500, 6500 - $159.95
6500LL, 7500, 8500 - $179.95
8500LL, 9500, 10500 - $199.95
Do you most often fish with live bait, yo-yo style jigs, or surface jigs, and do you have a preference on the pound test line you will use most often?
A friend got me a 10500 about a year back yesterday we were taking it out for a test and review on the beach after trying to jam my rod into the sand the gamble hit a rock and the reel root broke I honestly don’t want to put it down because I’ve never really gotten to use it was wondering if you guys sell the housing so I can probably transfer everything over to a new housing or if the foot can be welded some how
Hi, there. I'm sorry to hear about your reel. You can find more info on servicing here: www.pennfishing.com/PENN-service.html
I just bought the 10500 for shark fishing what rod is the best
Did he say bullet proof
What type of fishing will you be doing with the SSV5500? Will you be using mono or braid? We make several rods at various price points for almost all applications.
Which Penn reel is best for a 9-foot battalion rod
I just need a good reek for catching 25-40 saltwater bass of a boat, and also a reel to cast off the rocks somewhere occasionally? which one do u suggest, I will buy immediately lol
Hi, Sarah. Take a look at the Spinfisher series.
How about a maintenance video for these reels. I take things apart all the time with no issue but this reel kicks my ass. I can get the handle off, undo the screws that hold the side plate in place but I cant get it completely off. Reel has been running strong for over a year, but its time for maintenance and I cant get in the damn thing.
what is the difference between the fierce 2 and the spinfisher v.? (talking about fishing capability and not the reel size.)
Materials and features, the SSV is a smoother, more durable reel. You can compare specs on both reels at pennfishing.com
What type of rod will be best with the Penn spinfisher 10500 for landbased shark fishing and casting out for big sharks?
+PENNfishing do yall make costomer combos or no ? In intresed in purchasing one of your products
I just bought a spin v 10500 and I need rod advise,I mainly do surf fishing for big halibut and sharks.
i have hesitate in the past because the spinners from pen are on the heavy side but bought a new battle and went kayak fishing for the first time in my life and forgot one of the rules that your body follow your head and tip my yak and the rod and reel went to the bottom at about 40 feet of water and you know the little ting fish all day wiout issue,if you want a shimano reel that is full metal contruction prepare to spend some serious cash im sold on the new reel and i want it bad
What would be a good rod for the 10500? 7ft for a boat rod. I'm getting a new arsenal of just penn reel's. I want it to be able to catch the biggest fish the 10500 can handle, be braid worthy, and be under $100 preferably.
I have the Spinfisher 10500, what Jigging rod will match it for pulling on big fish offshore? Bulletproof reel! Thanks in advance!
+Tarpon World Check out the Carnage II jigging rods. We recommend this model for the SSV 10500 CARJGII80200S60. www.pennfishing.com/penn-rods-spinning-rods-penn-carnage-ii/1371189.html#q=carnage%2520ii&start=5
Thank you!
should add some noise to the drag. i hate the lack of it
Hey what reel size would be good for freshwater fish like striper catfish and some surf fishing?
I have a Penn 716 spinfisher (greenie) that I've used for 20 years , I've often wondered what year those were produced? I'm pretty sure it's Penn's original model.
Hi, Heather. Wow, that's great! The 716 Spinfisher was first introduced in 1976.
PENNfishing awesome , thanks for that info, it's high quality for being vintage, what's a good pole to keep that reel period?
@tunanorth really? tgats good to know i know alot of the big conventional reels are made here but alot of the spinning are not i dont do any big boat big reel.fishing only offshore kayak fishing so the spinning reels is all i need i just like yo supporr more of.the usa made models
love it reliable reel.
Wow I want to buy one of these reels I'm going to see how much it cost on amazon
what is the name of reel
I would look at the Legion and Regiment inshore series of rods. Any of the 8-15 and 10-17lb rods in both series would be a perfect match for the SSV4500.
Good produk
Big game PENN !!!!
I have 2 penn spinfisher 8000LL
is there anyway to loosen or remove the rear drag I don't want the fish to feel any tension I fish for alligator gar and want the live line to be super smooth with zero tension
Unfortunately, there is no way to make the Live-Liner tension any less than what you can get by dialing it all the way back.
ThHi, Eddie. This rear drag is set at a light drag almost 0, but you can loosen it by turning it counter clock-wise, and you would to set it to your feel/liking.
What rod was they useing for the groupers with the Penn spin fisher
thanks and im going to try not to tip my yak anymore jajajaj ,and as soon i got some money you can bet im going for the spinerr v 4500 im in love
If i use spinfisher 5000 series, what would be the best choice for rod ?
Take a look at the Carnage II CARBWII3065S70 rod.
What rod u paired it with
Is the new Spinfisher V replacing the Penn Slammer or is the Slammer still going to be produced?
