These blagdon affinity ponds are brilliant for keeping fancy goldfish. I live on a narrowboat and have a 130 litre half moon one on the front deck. Due to lack of permanent 240v electricity I’m unable to run the brilliant blagdon filter, so I use a 12v air pump powering a large sponge and box filter. In addition I have a solar powered air pump to air stone and a solar powered submersible pump running the waterfall. The substrate is gravel and lava rock. Maintenance through the summer is once a week gravel vac and 50% water change, less so in the winter. The water stays crystal clear. The fish in this setup, for the last three years are two adult ranchu which are thriving. ( they spawned this year ) They over winter in the pond and I stop feeding when the water temperature drops below 10C. Thanks for this video, I hope you have many years of enjoyment from this pond.
That is an amazing set up. Would love to see it somehow. If you’re even mooring up near north wales then give us a call! Or find a way to send us some pictures 😁
I found your email address on your website and sent some pics. I’m sure some fish keepers would frown at the living conditions of fish on a narrowboat but believe me they are thriving. Regards warren
I prefer shubunkins and common goldfish.. im not into these overbred fish.. they have to many health issues.. this pond looks really nice, but what about winter.. i wouldn't trust it...
We have the Grand Octagon which we bought in 2019. It’s been drained and moved once but otherwise the 5in 1 has kept everything clean and healthy, but had to replace it this year with a new one. We have to have a net over it but it looks good.
I like the grand octagon the best, but this one fitted best in this space. I have found the same, the 5 in one is keeping the water crystal clear. How often have you had to clean yours?
@@Mountain_Aquatics I probably clean the filters maybe every 10-12 weeks when I see the flow has reduced. With the new one the cables aren’t threaded through the frame which makes the process much easier.
I like the pond but will you put any gravel or more plants to make the setting more interesting for the fish? Also to give them shade and hiding places 🙏
That's the plan! There are a lot more plants in the pond now. No gravel though, I’ll have a think about that. Would you like to see an update on this pond?
I guess your be doing the same as me in the autumn bringing them inside .i have a massive fantail and a few African claw frog i let out around may the frogs do a great job eating the tadpoles and other bugs in my pond i be buying a little fantail this winter as my large fantail gets a little depressed after spending all summer out with his friends
Hello, I’m getting a Blagdon pond next year, I’m very impressed with them. Is it ok to leave fancy goldfish in one over winter? Also will you be covering it with a net to stop any herons?
Because it’s a raised pond the water heats up and cools down more quickly. We use a floating pond heater in the coldest months which the fish really enjoy. We haven’t lost any.
I noticed you put only pearlscales in ? I imagine from one breeder or source ? I tried multiple occasions in mixing fish of different varieties and breeders . It work’s reasonably well with koi not however for fancy’s I’ve had very mixed results
Yes I have lots of different variety’s of fancy goldfish. I may add or switch some fish around as I feel like a change. What fish would you out in this pond?
Having five aquariums myself, you need pond plants, not talking about water lilies or any of that stuff. I’m talking about in the plants for the goldfish to munch on like Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum; Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum); Water Starwort (Callitriche) native; Hornwort (Ceratophyllum dermersum) Native Willow Moss (Fontinalis Antipyretica) Native Common Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis)?
Just a general question. When its a pond like this one do you have to be watchful if we get huge downpours of rain as we often do in this country😮 that it doesnt overflow
No major issues. The light on stays 5in1 stays on all night and I’ve noticed that does tend to be a hot spot for algae. But overall it’s been a real hassle free pond
i hope you put a net over this, the herons, cats and seagulls will have these guys for lunch in no time. Also theyre not going to cope well with a cold winter. I would only put commons and Wakin outside
These fish are only in here for the summer. I have a whole fish room full of tanks and various variety’s of fancy goldfish that I breed and show. It will likely be the calico wakins I put in there soon but over the winter I may just have them all in the fish room.
I did wonder if the pond was at your place, it wasnt made obvious in the video. It is important to make a point of these things though otherwise people will think its ok to put fancies out in a pond all year. you also didnt mention anything about using pre cycled media, which Im assuming you did based on only "cycling" it for a week.
Yes we add some filter media from in the fish room that is already established and kick start the beneficial bacteria. I’d normally just put a couple of fish in at a time to give the bacteria a chance to catch up. Doesn’t make for as exciting viewing though. This video was filmed last week and other than a little peak in nitrates which soon levelled out the water has been fine
Just a bit of advice dont put the windows in driect sunlight as they eventally crack i had a leak in mine after 10 years and fell apart then got given one newer then mine but had been kept in driect sun by the past owner and the windows completely cracked fish where ok but had to quit the hobby
I’ve never seen goldfish like those before. Slightly concerned they look uncomfortable with their bloated bodies, reminds me of seeing pugs, pekenese dogs that can’t cope with running about? Are these fish man made breeding-wise. They look like they can barely move 😟
@@Mountain_Aquatics true, and teach them about water safety. I've always kept fish, but was wary about ponds due to having kids. Maybe now they're older I should go for it.
Those fish were adorable! Great little pond xxx
They are sooo chunky 😍
Very nice fish looking forward too the electric hook up
You and me both!
Gorgeous pond and my favorite kind of fish...love it so pretty
Thanks so much! They really are lovely looking and unusual fish ❤️ glad you liked them.
Wow a great video my friend and wonderful set up.
Thank you kindly
Beautiful set up. Thanks for sharing ❤

Thanks for watching
Beautiful pearl scales 👌
And a good size aren’t they!
Just Stunning
Great Job boys.🤙
Thank you so much 😀
They are gorgeous ❤
Thank you 😁
That's wonderful for fancy goldfish
It’s perfect!
I've just purchased the medium corner one for my fancy gold fish comes Friday can't wait
Good choice!

We bought the blagdon planting pockets so the cables aren’t too obvious amongst the greenery.
@kateeveritt3292 good idea! I’ve only got one, I want more. They were fiddly to fit though

Yes only out for the summer. If only keep single tailed common type goldfish in this over winter
@@Mountain_Aquatics nice job 👏
Is there a video of the switch box how it’s set up can’t find it on your channel ?
I think there might be something about the switch box on our video (building a preformed pond) let me know
I’ve just been given something very similar to this I need to get a pump etc for this ❤
Try the 5 in 1 pump and filter kit.
Hello, I’m getting a Blagdon pond next year, I’m very impressed with them. Is it ok to leave fancy goldfish in one over winter? Also will you be covering it with a net to stop any herons?
I would only keep single tail fish in this over winter as a general rule. Yes we will be adding a net but will take it off for the update videos

There is currently hornwort in there, I can’t fit it all in one video 😉
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
what nice fish can you keep in this all year round?
Some Wakin would be a perfect choice if you can find some 👍🏻
Rain garden goldfish had them. He was in Hawaii. In ancient times. Haven't heard of them since.
Just a general question. When its a pond like this one do you have to be watchful if we get huge downpours of rain as we often do in this country😮 that it doesnt overflow
Plenty of rain this week and no problems so far 👍🏻
Any overflow will run out through the holes around the top of the liner.
How long will the pond survive please
It should last years
They are going to be taken inside once the temperature drops right?!?
Of course. This type of fancy goldfish wouldn’t fair well in our British winters. I have a fish room they will be happy in once the temperature drops
I've had mine outside all of last winter
Yes I know yours did well. Did you have to add heat though?
@@Mountain_Aquatics no heat! Tho I did heat them in spring when I wanted them to breed earlier
Nice video as usual. Do you leave the light on 24/7? I removed mine and have an overhead lamp fed by a timer.
This one has a sensor and only comes on at night 👍🏻
dose the yellow sticker peel off the filter?
Oooh I’ve not checked. If it does then I’ll be sure to update you in a future video 👍🏻
You can see from the front AND SIDE!!!
Yes it’s brilliant isn’t it! 😁
Bet these ponds cost a fortune in electrics? 😂 I’m thinking of buying one although i’m worries of the potential monthly cost.
There are online calculators where you can work it out, but to be honest I don’t believe they would be any more expensive than any other pond
Can you tell me about any issues you’ve had with these ponds ? I’m looking into one .. regards wayner

@@Mountain_Aquatics brilliant thank you for your response, regards wayner
Has anyone tried the hose lock version of this?
They look very similar
What’s the price difference?
Is this the mocha colour? Looks great. Thinking of getting one myself
Looks good doesn’t it. Let me know if you get one. Which shape are you thinking?
Would this be large enough for a couple koi fish ?
No id stick to goldfish in these pal
Nice set up but can't say they would be my fish of choice

no filtration?
Yes there is filtration. If you watch the video before this one you will see us adding it. It’s the Blagdon 5 in 1

An ok. I’ll find out about that. But after 10 years plus I think you have got to be happy with that?
Excellent! The smaller filters don’t have that option and it did annoy me.
Those are the sturdiest pearl scales I've ever seen. They can never swim. Large ranchu
You like them?
I’ve never seen goldfish like those before. Slightly concerned they look uncomfortable with their bloated bodies, reminds me of seeing pugs, pekenese dogs that can’t cope with running about? Are these fish man made breeding-wise. They look like they can barely move 😟
Yes these are man made selectively bred goldfish
How can you fish a pond that size he might as well fish his gold fish bowel
Nobody is fishing this pond?
I would get a net over that, stop birds taking them.
Never been an issue. I do have it overflowing with plants now though. You can’t even see the fish 😂
I get scared seeing small kids around ponds. It freaks me out.
Beautiful job though, lovely fish to watch. 👍🏼
Got to get them hooked young 😁
