Erik: You have a natural talent for teaching. I can see how you built that Good crew that you have now and I can easily see that they are learning from you, and you are inspiring them to be their best selves. You even bring balance to Jaime and help him feel seen and heard. I can tell that’s something that he struggles with. You are a Good brother, a Good friend, a Good boss, and a Good Father. You didn’t even let your son pee in the closet or on the wall. I think all of this means that YOU 🫵🏻 are a Good 👍🏻 man and what you have built is your Character. You designed and built Erik Perkins. I think 🤔 that’s something to be PROUD of. I hope you are proud of yourself, but just in case you forgot your worth, let me remind you by telling you that I AM proud of you 👏🏻!! You are Golden 💛.
I am in my first year teaching the local high school's construction trades class. I have found your channel to be quite useful. You explain things well and know what you are talking about. I appreciate your videos. Thanks!
Omg, where was this video a year ago. Its 2 years old but I didn't see it. I watched so many as I was doing a 2600 sq ft addition to my house. I got it all figured out but this video is top shelf. If I'd of found this 1st, I wouldn't have had to watch any others. Great vid guys.
Nice and clear thankyou, No untamed wit or unnecessary filler such as animals which is great as I just want the knowledge and not the junk. Appreciated.
This is awesome. Still in school for engineering and shot my first cut/fills out on a job yesterday. It was hectic. But, slowly getting the hang of it!
Hey Perkins BB, you give great info. in a nice, concise manner that is easy to understand. You don't give tons of worthless self-absorbed chatter. Thank you for taking your time to make a great video and share your knowledge with the world. Good on ya!
Awesome video, Man. Thanks for sharing. Watching from Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Building an above ground pool for my family in a few weeks and a perfectly level piece of ground is essential. Your vid covered all. Good luck to you and your family!!
I use my laser for everything setting windows so when I trim everything is straight shoot the wall to build cabinets to, use it for starting siding just to name a few it’s definitely a game changer
Great Helper and future, if not Already, “Perkins Builder Brothers AND SONS”✨‼️Soccer Athlete as well⁉️ Nice Guitars 🎸 ~~ Play any Bluegrass❓ When YALL start Your Tour; can add a touch of Pickin’ to the Show‼️ Thank You for explaining the Laser Level‼️Nubies learning‼️I was also an old school water level guy. Finally, got updated w/Laser- paid for itself on 1st job‼️
Nice!! We love our laser too. And good eye... my brother and I play all kinds of instruments including drums, bass, piano and guitar... all kinds of music as long as it is “good” music
I remember when I was studying in China and saw bunch of civil engineer department students out on the campus area carrying "Big rulers" and "Something that resembles a scope" measuring heights on each area on the campus, now I know what they are XD
Well done -Perkins Builder Brothers , you sounded like wanted to share this with us genuinely , very details layout and instruction , comparison of pro and con which is a good thing about the product before deciding which model to go for. Btw, your son would be a good builder one day as well , he looked very confidence and smart .
Okay I rarely comment to say thanks for explaining something, on RUclips. I just believe that the money you are getting from RUclips or Patron is thank you enough. But I have gone to like ten video to complain a laser and everyone explained the grading part pretty good, no one explained the leveling part though. You explained it perfectly. Thanks for helping me learn this.
Hey bud; can you post the link where to pick up that particular Laser or info to help me locate it. Would greatly appreciate it... Thank you much. Video about a year old and still rocking.
Can any surveyor lasers give you the slope of the terrain from the road to the back yard if the house or anything else blocking your line of sight in a straight line ?
On thing you never mentioned, the staff needs to be plumb, needs to be level to get a accurate reading, some people will push it back and forth, which makes it miles out, remember plumb all the way, some of these tools have level/plumb👍
Newcomers to a laser level always seem to get confused on - When the laser sensor moves up on the rod, that means the grade is going down and vice versa. I always found it helpful to tell them to ignore the location of the laser sensor on the rod and just pay attention to the bottom of the rod. Btw, that ‘scope’ is called a builders level. 🤜🤛
But then you haven't taught them the specific functions of the tool imo. Understanding key components of a tool is critical to me because if someone is limited, ie; their asked to use it but dont understand how to adjust it, and only know to look at the bottom, there lays an issue imo.
Well builders level is more of a brand/niche term but transit level or grade level is the most common term west of Colorado. Or yeah sure guys call it a scope a lot, but you tell a kid to grab your builders level, hes coming back with your 4ft stabila
@@skytanner7355 ‘Builders level’ is not a brand name, niche term or even a regional preference. It’s the name of the tool. Google the term and no 4ft Stabilia comes up. A ‘transit’ is used for measuring angles, vertically or horizontally. A ‘grade level’ is a measure of how much education a student has completed. If the new guy comes back with a 4ft Stabilia, he hasn’t been instructed properly on correct tool terminology.
@@psidvicious 🖖🧐 Look, kid who's never worked construction, I'm sure google knows a lot of shit. That's awesome. But what I'm saying, is this it's simple even for u. It's like. Come on to a west coast job site and use that term and people will have no clue what your asking for so you will get the wrong tool. And it's not what people call it now days and this is just from someone that does this for a living tho so what do I know ? If google says, then google says 🖖🧐🖕😂😂😂
I think it allows the concrete for the floor to flow into that block, locking it in to the foundation. The top of that block is the same level as the finished concrete floor. The block forms the front edge of the slab.
could you use the sensor instead of the string line? and do you use a digital reader to measure distance. And could you use a digital level instead of a bubble level they are way more accurate.
Thanks, very informative for leveling the bottom ground when I install an above ground pools this summer. A friend lent me the exact same level as you used in the video. Everyone says these pools must be dead nuts level or there are big issues with them.
Yes...Good question! That wall is a 15° prow ( it’s hard to see in the video). That first block was at the corner of the prow which was the end of one side of the block runs.
For outside I think I would rather use my water level (bucket of colored water wiith a long clear rubber tube attached) . I couldn't deal with that beeping. Plus I can go around corners, if need be.
Lasers are useless for checking out bikinis when you're working on high-rises on the beach. Plus, can you calibrate that thing? It's very very important to check calibration every month or so, especially if you let more than one person use it. Maybe do a video on calibration, lasers and builders levels?
@TheTimeTraveler2025 Gravity isn't even around the world. Higher mass areas (e.g., basaltic rocks under the Pacific) cause a slight rise in ocean level. Sea level rise will be faster on the east coast because water pouring off Greenland is funneled west by ocean currents - the same currents we've known about for over 500 years. A combination of wind and currents makes add'l water pile up on the east coast. At planetary-scale water is lumpy. So says science, but you somehow know better? Hahaha, no you don't.
Not sure with a laser level but I dont worry too much about walls being square, because they usually are not. There is always one corner that is just off. In that case do your best to find the best corner. Then measure in about a foot from each wall and make a mark. Use a large framing square to draw a square corner. This gives you a reference. Depending on the size of the room, you can either pop chalk lines(do not use RED chalk) or draw lines to create a grid from which you can pull measurements. Check the measurements at each end and the middle of both sides to all walls. By graphing them you can see where one wall bows or angles out of square. Allowing you to adjust your tile accordling. Remember floor trim is a certain thickness on each end and depending on that thickness you can hide some of the un straightness. Note RED chalk is no no near any finished ot nearly finished product. It contains oil that will stain and will bleed through finishes.
I've been on RUclips for a good hour looking for instructions on how to use my $30 Amazon laser since it's a Chinese product instructions are "power on button" but you're not even sure where the power button is and then it doesn't give you any instruction of which button does what but just says "attach to tripod" or "insert battery". Anyways thank you but now I need to find a laser that is more user friendly like you have.
I don't think that those blocks he's laying here are for a wall. I think they just define the front of the slab foundation they will pour. The walls that are already built probably have a footer. See this video: ruclips.net/video/c1GozVM3fIM/видео.html
I don’t get it. Why did you bother to do all that work to ensure the gravel was perfectly level? I would have put the laser in the middle or anywhere else and project a line on the interior of the block walls. Then I would have poured the concrete up to that line. The result is a perfectly level concrete floor.
Because getting the gravel at the correct elevation, prior to pouring the basement slab, assures you don’t have either too thick or thin areas in your slab. Too thick of areas is costly (concrete costs much more than gravel) and concrete that is too thin doesn’t have the desired load capacity.

We really struggle with the on-the-spot math required. How do you do all the calculations, or do you have short cuts that don't require calculating?
What’s the best laser level to build a deck with? This one would work I reckon
Good stuff. love the guitars. rock on.
Thank u for this video
What is the model or brand of the instrument. Can someone give a link where we can purchase this tools...
I can't find this system (in the video) on their web site....or Amazon. Do you have a link?

So. Im confused. I make the bottom of the rod even with the height i want it, and slide the reader down until it beeps?

geeee. my first thought, Canelo in the contruccion business.
What code did you use to mark the gravel with paint?
Thank you very much sir thank you
Can use use it attached to mini excavator
Yes! I’ve seen a magnetic reader that you can stick to the boom of an excavator
Can you review generic batteries for dewalt? Saw you had a blue one in previous videos.

water level I'm old school cannot go wrong with water level

Quick answer - get a self levelling laser level and read the instructions
So no rebar needed for those blocks
The level is cool, but as a Floridian living on sandy soil I'm watching block being laid without a footer and I'm in complete shock.
I’m guessing it was just an example on how to use the laser
I don't think that those blocks he's laying here are for a wall. I think they just define the front of the slab foundation they will pour. The walls that are already built probably have a footer. See this video: ruclips.net/video/c1GozVM3fIM/видео.html
