- Some of the land got a bit out of control. With the hottest summer months fast approaching, we needed to get this done!
Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple of left the UK in 2021 to search of somewhere we could build a homestead and connect with nature. This led us to the beautiful Alentejo region in Portugal. Self-sufficiency is important to us, whilst we're not off grid, we're keen to rely less and less on external systems.

a good fence and some sheep would solve that tall grass problem
We have a lot of young trees and our veg garden on this part of the land so I don’t let the sheep on here at the moment, we have plans to change things around a bit so part of that will be adding more fencing 😊
Amazing how undesirable plants grow really fast comparing to the veg and fruit it would be nice if it was the other way round guess many will be farmers ,your huge efforts make the homestead look great.

Hi Marc and Allys 😃 Great job cutting down the grass, possibly in the future you may need a couple of sheeps or goats to help you with that job in certain areas of the land 😃 Last Wednesday I went to Portalegre and crossing the Serra de São Mamede I could see how beautiful was the landscape, however, the weather reminded me UK's weather as it was sunny, foggy and then rained cats and dogs 😅 Hopefully this time wasn't raining enough for floods 😃 I hope you guys are doing well 😃
Thanks a lot David :) Ah yes, many people tell us we need sheep, we will get some eventually haha, right now we have lots of young trees on this land otherwise we'd let the shepherd put his sheep on there too :)

Machinery is expensive here, unfortunately! This one was around €9k, 2008 model kubota 25horsepower
It appears your steering has a lot of loose play and takes much more turning either direction than the amount of it should be. So that means your front end steering needs attention.

Oh what an awful job when you suffer with bad hay fever! I don’t know if you take anything for it. I found that Stinging Nettle extract really helps with it.

Yeah it’s not the nicest job when I’m suffering but had to be done!
I take some benedryl and drink teas with local honey in. Think it helps, sometimes!

Amazing progress that a good strimming can do. 2 quick questions: how did you go about choosing your tractor and when cutting down this grass is there an option to leave it quite long or is your mower not suitable to keep the growth at 20cm for example?

I viewed lots of tractors, mostly used but they were very old imports and the new ones were too expensive so I got this one which was mid range. I also didn’t need a huge horsepower one, so 25hp was a good size for me and to get some useful attachments!
The brush hog can be raised but I’m not sure exactly how much grass length it leaves behind 😊

I thought you said at the beginning that you weren't allowed to use the tractor
I said we have had a lot of high risk days so I was unable to use it towards the end of April when I initially planned on doing it.
Because of the rain we’ve had over the past few weeks we are no longer on high fire risk but that’ll change again in June
