Back in the old days, I would be the one. A family member would call when they had car problems. "Hey my car won't start", ok does it crank no start or is it a no crank. "What are you talking about"? Was the usual response," it just won't start". My parents (mum) were the worst about this. Thank God our cars were fairly decent and this didn't happen that often. But I got a good laugh when you talking, about the difference between the two. Thanks for another great video.
Man good times. Never owed a 6v, but can see how something so small could cause a headache. I really enjoy your videos, reasoning and process of elimination methodology. Plus you remind me of an old friend, especially with surfboard in your van. These cars talk to us, I always could use a brush up, thanks!
If that bushing isn't good, it will put the armature a little off centered and cause the no start. When converting from 6 to 12 volt that bushing has to be changed. Big hole small input shaft means a mis alignment and starter gear doesn't contact fly wheel properly.
What about headlights for 6 volt bug? I got led units from Vintage Headlight supplier and they go completely out when I have drain on electrical system such as when I’m braking and using turn singnal. I know you did video a while back about converting to led headlights but they didn’t work. This is what I actually appreciate about your videos. You show good, bad and ugly. It shows that things don’t always goes as planned so don’t sweat it. Please keep them coming!
1966 VW bus converted to 12V starts only with jumper cables, but won't start when they're removed. No crank nothing. New starter motor didn't do the trick either. There's no generator light on dash with engine running, but the light does come on with key to on position.
I had recent replacing my spark plug wires on my 67’ Squareback with success! Some cold mornings it would crank, but just never start by barely cranking. You ever do a pitch dark slow motion video of old wires to see where spark is coming out of cracks in old wires?
I have an original 6v 1963 bug. My car cranks somewhat slowly and there is a grinding noise when cranking. It doesn’t start. Battery seems fine. Could it be a bad pinion or the bushing. Great video BTW. Thanks.
Hey Mike, i watched a lot of video and did not find one thing I was looking for. I have an aircooled vw that has a bosch alternator with a voltage regulator. Battery not charging currently, replaced the voltage regulator and still no charging for battery. Theres not dummy light so I hooked one up but with ignition on lights not coming on. Lastly, I got rid of voltage regulator and applied a 12V from battery on DF terminal on alternator and battery is charging but voltage is 17V. I am so confused what the issue here is and my head hurts lol. Any help???

Nice job explaining ALL of this, in depth. Thanks, Mike!
How about a. Detailed segment on the hard start relay. Wiring diagram and relay source. Thanks for another great video.
hey Mike clean those battery terminals. cheers
After cleaning a little grease in the terminals prevents the corrosion.
Good advice and thanks for the description of a hard start relay.
I just put a 12v in, started REAL good!

My grandfather got bit by black widows a couple times. They do make you real sick. Best avoided. Rarely fatal. He did go to the hospital IIRC.

really rare to see a bad wire set on a vw. Unless they are silicone core. then they dont usually work at all.
Thanks for the video Mike
Hello my friend .. It's caused by the steering wheel, being on the wrong side of the car ... Kind regards Alex in Australia
and going the wrong way on the freeway ha ha.
Step one is to make sure it has gas.
You'd be surprised how much this one works.

yea probably
It sounds like the beetle has a bit of a gallop when turning over, no?
What happens if it’s a 12v battery not 6v?
Weak spark is a yellow spark. got it.
It could be a bad condenser or bad points.
Does this apply to the 12v beetles? (the bushing problem)

I have a 56 6v. Clicks, doesnt turn over. Cant figure it out. New battery.
Your ADHA is worse than mine lol
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 👍
I'm not getting no fire to the points
Looked like battery connection needed cleaned !
