Good review thanks. I’ve been riding for about 12 years, 7 of those after a massive heart attack in 2014. Now it’s an integral part of my health and fitness regime. In the winter I ride indoors on a trainer, in the warmer months I ride on the road or the local MTB trails. I’ve made many friends riding, and take part in a lot of local organised rides.
I think meeting the people and the camaraderie is the best part about all of this. Glad you’re doing well and staying healthy. 👌 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
In my younger days, I used to do a lot of running with various clubs. One day I stumbled on a group of mostly guys in a club at the Adventist Hospital in Hong Kong - it promoted running as part of an active recovery programme following heart attacks or surgery. They were older, chubbier and didn't look dangerous, but they killed me on the hills. I put it down to determination. I'll never underestimate a recovering heart patient again. These days I'm a rider, which is easier on the knees than pounding the pavement. Hopefully, it'll keep me out of the ICU, if not the ER (collar bone, road rash and other crash damage). Live long and keep pedalling
Hey, I just saw your quick cameo on That Triathlon Life video! I had to rewind it to make sure I read it correctly! I don't care what surfaces I ride on. I love trails, gravel, roads, or even flat, repurposed railroad trails! Unless I'm doing a specific triathlon training, cycling is about hanging with friends! Great video! Keep them coming
Yeah Kevin! Sneaky cameo 😂 And those were my kids throwing rocks into the river while we swam. Thanks for checking this one out! All road types, all bike types! 🙌
Hey Matt! Since I live in Florida I do mostly flat, road biking. I am already a huge Garmin fan and this review has further solidified my positive view of the company. thanks for the great video!
Yeah this is a good one. 👌 I did have horrible luck with the 820 from Garmin but overall I tend to like Garmin stuff. 👍🏻 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thanks for the video - you have some great info on your channel. I spend most of my time on a road bike. I live nearby and love the country roads in Clark County. Good variety of flat/hills.
Yeah Dan! Those Clark County roads are solid. This part of the RAC course and heading north from Camas are some of my favorite spots. Thanks for watching and look forward to seeing you out on the road! 🚴
Mostly been a road cyclist in past years and currently just use a Garmin 245 as my "bike" computer. I bought my first MTB last year and have started to get into single track. It has been an enlightening experience as it is much harder than I would have thought it would be! both in balance and skill and just strength.
I think you would love a dedicated bike computer! Nice work learning new things with the MTB. I'm trying to do the same. Good luck, thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I started mountain biking a number of years ago as a way to stay fit enough to ride my dirt bike. I have since sold the dirt bike and focus on riding the local mountain bike trails here in Michigan. A few years ago I started to road bike as well. Of course I also use Zwift in the Michigan winters. It is great that you give away items that you review.
Yeah, I don’t know if the companies like that I do it but it seems like the right thing to do. Review it and give it to others that can really get some good use out of these devices. I lived in East Lansing for four years when my wife was in medical school in Michigan. We loved it there. 👌
I live in a medium-sized city and so it's tough to get out and do some open-road miles. Recently started bringing my road bike to the beach where i've found some nice 30-40 mile routes. Otherwise I spend half my ride in the city getting to a large park, where I can get some hills and unencumbered miles in without stopping at street intersections all the time. Great vid!
Thanks Adam! Yeah, it's tough when you spend more than half of your ride getting to the spots where roads get nice. At least you have some good parks. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
At the beginning of the pandemic I hadn't touched a bike for over five years. So I decided to change that and got myself my first full squish - an older top-of-the-line Trek that is definitely more bike than I know what to do with. But I've been picking it up again quickly and have fallen in love with MTB riding again! European checking in so I guess I don't qualify, but I like your channel. Subbed!
🤫 - Happy to add you to the qualified list. That rule is just to avoid spending tons of money shipping things to people all around the world. If you're the randomly selected as the winner I'll send it your way. Best of luck my friend 👍🏻
I think it's a good option. The 830 is a very similar computer. You'd just be paying extra for that touch screen. 😬 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
You may recall from the Bolt V2 video that I'm out near Duke Forest, so I've been doing a mix of road cycling and relatively simple mountain biking. Thanks for informative and helpful content!
I do remember that. Yeah, I need to some day make it back there for a trail run or mt bike ride. My brother lives in Cary NC so maybe next summer. 🤔 Best of luck with this one Sean! 👍🏻
Great review Matt. I am not a Garmin fan but I appreciate you honest look at the 530. Side note, love the effort you put into your production, very top quality.
@@mlegrand I switched over to the Bolt a couple years ago Matt. I find the elevation accuracy to be much better. I do currently still use a Garmin watch for my runs, but I am hoping to switch that over to Wahoo as well.
I started road riding a bit with friends, 4 years ago when my weight toped out at 277 lbs. I had done some racing, road and tri, 120 lbs and 35 years ago. Since covid started, I lost 45 lbs, now at 225 and falling. i dont have a head unit, but a friend gave me a power hub. so i hope to win. it would help. my goal is to get in 200-250 km per week for the rest of the summer, with structure, and get below 200 lbs before i have to climb on the rollers in the fall. love the content thx.
David this is awesome progress! Yeah, a bike computer head unit would be nice to go with that power hub. I think you'd really enjoy something like this. Best of luck and thanks so much for watching! 👍🏻
Wow Matt - that intro was spot-on; some seriously well-executed photography and editing in there. Really appreciate your real-world review style also. I do have to agree about the feel of Garmin Edge charging ports - first noticed it on the Edge 1000 which felt about as water-tight as a sponge.
I love road riding! I started cycling on a hybrid bike, but in this january I bought my first road bike and I love it! :) I live on a flat area so I mainly do flat rides, but I try to go into the mountains in every month because it’s more enjoyable for me
Awesome that you go into the mountains occasionally! I bet it's amazing. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Matt, I've been mountain biker for a long time, couple of years and I did not like to ride on roads at all. Even the shortest sections that got me to trails was like a sentence for me. But this year I got myself a road cycling bug. I absolutely love the energy transfer. Nothing gets lost in suspension or in a tyre width/thread. Feels like pure power. And also as I am trying to get more into the triathlon it makes more sense to ride road.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ivan! I've been going the other direction. It is interesting to feel that difference in power transfer from road to MTB. Either way it's just great to be out riding bikes. Best of luck buddy! 👍🏻
I have been road riding for a few years. Every Wednesday our local club has some group rides and I love the hard, 36-40km/hr drop rides we do. It’s suffering but a total blast.
Sounds similar to what my club has been doing. Super hard but fun. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Quinn! I really appreciate it. 👍
Thanks for the review! I've actually been eying this one. I've recently gotten in to cycling and love finding new routes around my home town. Also I just finished my first bikepacking trip (just got home today) and a bike computer would have been really convenient.
Depending on how long you're out bikepacking that extra power pack might come in handy as well. Or something like the 1030+ but that's pretty expensive. I really want to try bikepacking some day. Could make for a really fun video. 🎥 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand True! We actually cheated a bit and stayed in hostels on the way since I went with my girlfriend who doesn't like sleeping in tents. So in this trip power was never an issue :) You should try it! It's an awesome way to explore! Thanks for the video
I’ve been doing ROAD cycling for the past 3 years here in Australia. I never experience having a bike computer and to be honest I only use a smart phone and garmin watch for my cadence, speed, maps and etc. And currently, I am planning to have a bike computer, thats why I’ve been searching which suits my small budget. Luckily that you are planning to have a comparison between the New Wahoo Element Bolt vs this Garmin Edge 530 because this are my preferred options. Well, I might be lucky to receive this device. Hehe anyway thank you for your awesome videos mate.
Yeah! These two are excellent options in this > $300ish range. I am excited to make that Bolt v2 vs 530 video here soon. I just need more time in the day with kids, work and everything. 😂 I think if you don't need too much in the way of navigation, mt biking metrics, or some of the other connect iq apps than the wahoo with better buttons and ui might be the way to go. 🤷🏻♂️ I think that's what my conclusions will most likely be in the video. But thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it.
Nice review Matt. I road bike primarily but I like all the versatility you mentioned about the 530 at a reasonable price point (currently on sale) and decided to go that route.
I'd love to pick up a gravel bike at some point Simon. You'll have to keep me posted on how you're liking it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I need to hop on the gravel train. Seems like an amazing mix. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Bill! I really appreciate it. 👍
My favorite riding is either fast rolling hills or big hard climb. I am fortunate enough to have both near where I live. Just discovered your channel through that video but I already love the quality both of the video, the informations and the edit. You just got a new subscriber and I'll definitely be on the lookout for that Bolt V2 VS Edge 530 video if you decide to compare the 2.
Nice video Matt. Did you add a caption to your video at a later time saying that Trailforks no longer works on it? This is a worry for me. I do mountain biking and really like the Trailforks app. I'm considering which bike computer to get at the moment, so I really want to make sure that Trailforks works on it well. Perhaps I should consider the Wahoo.
You should consider Wahoo for sure but they don’t have Trailforks either. I added that text clip while I was editing. I can’t edit the video after it’s posted. I’d check with the Trailforks team to make sure it’s fixed. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Personally I’d google around to see if there are rumors of their next iteration. Maybe the 540? If Garmin announced a new versions, prices would drop even further theoretically. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I mainly bike along my city's "seawall" that loops around it's downtown area. It's a fantastic bike ride that you can do in the morning, but I haven't explored other areas outside of it. I'm mainly running, but want to get more into biking. I've never used these bike gps devices before, but my garmin watch is very impressive.
Awesome Minal187! I think a gps watch is a great alternative but you'd love having a dedicated bike gps computer. Visibility is fantastic while riding. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand yeah I'm definitely enjoying the watch. COVID restrictions on my country are slowly lifting and now is the time to shave off the covid weight. Great video! Keep up the good work :)
Just started biking 3 months ago. Mainly going paved trails, slowly increasing distance and amount of elevation. Not confident to go on road sharing with cars yet. Using strava with my phone for now, but would be cool to have a bike computer.
Yeah John, you'd love a bike computer. I've been biking on the roads for a decade and I'm still not comfortable with these crazy cars. Stay safe and best of luck to you! 👍🏻
Great review. Riding mostly rails to trails as I build up my distance and endurance. Working up to a 100 mile ride to celebrate turning 50 this year in September. Looking at bike computers to help with training and for when I start doing rides.
Is it the Roam V2? I'd say it depends on what kind of riding you like to do. If you like Mountain biking or better mapping, the Garmin is probably the way to go. Otherwise, I like the ergonomics of the Wahoo devices. It's possible the Garmin is discounted because they're about to release something new. Garmin hasn't told me anything but it might be a good idea to wait a few weeks to see if there's any new options that would drive prices down even further. 🤷♂️
I've just gotten into biking so have mainly done city and suburban cycling on a commuter bike, but have done some longer loops on city paths and trails. Would love to try some gravel biking in the near future.
Yeah, I want to do more gravel biking also Thienan! If I ever make it happen, I'll make some videos about it. 🎥 Thanks for watching and best of luck! 🍀
I really want to try bike packing. Maybe that should be some sort of small goal for the summer. 🤔. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hey Matt, nice video, I lost my Garmin 530 last year and had to buy a second hand 820 but I’m expecting to be able to afford a 530 again, Despite I’m not an aggressive rider I enjoyed too much seeing the grit, flow and jumps at the end of each ride. I live in the DMV and love riding flowie trails, I do road biking as well once or twice a week. Take care and thanks for thinking about your viewers. God bless.
Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Johnny! I really appreciate it. 👍 Sorry to hear about that 530. I wasn't a huge fan of the 820 but glad you've got something that'll work short term. Eventually this 530 will get updated from Garmin so maybe you can make the 820 last. 🤷♂️ Or win this 😉 Best of luck!
Shame to hear you lost your computer. But second hand gear can be great. I spotted an ad for a Polar M460 for about US$40. I already had a Polar HR sensor, so I snapped it up. I've been using my phone for a few years and the M460 is my first proper bike comp. For something that's been on the market for at least 5 years, it still does a pretty good job. No navigation, but I know where I am going. It displays and captures all the data I need, and it syncs to Strava. Hopefully it will last a while. Cheers
Hey! I actually just got into biking in covid times, I commute into work on a city bike and have recently purchased a road bike, still getting used to clip less pedals and cleats! I’m in Chicago so everything is flat haha, still have to take a trip somewhere to enjoy some variety. I would use this on my road bike for training rides, currently I just use my cellphone and the strava app. Cheers!
Wow, that's awesome Simon! I hope you love cycling. It's a great sport. Maybe next summer you can train for some sort of long event? Getting used to those clipless pedals are tricky. I think I fell a few times when I was getting the hang of it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I haven’t been cycling for very long nor do I have the best equipment. I think I got my road bike from Walmart for fairly cheap but it works. I really enjoy road cycling for long stretches if I can manage. I also have kind of enjoyed setting up a cheap indoor training in the winter months to get some cycling in if it’s too cold to run.
I remember getting a lot stronger at cycling when I spent a winter training indoors. I'd stick with the Walmart bike for a while. Bikes are actually hard to find right now. I bet it'll swing the other way over the next year or two and you'll be able to get a screaming deal on something super nice. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Josh! I really appreciate it. 👍
I enjoying long smooth tarmac rides but have been getting into adventuring off pavement on my new gravel bike, the nav features this head unit has seem great for that
Yeah, you might like the navigation on this device. I've found Garmin's navigation to be the best on the market. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Alexander! I really appreciate it. 👍
I love 50-100K rides on weekend mornings, exploring country roads and monuments ruins or oddities linked to various legends and historic events, there are plenty of them here in Ireland. I have been looking for an edge, undecided on 530 or 830. Thanks for the review.
The user interface does really seems to lend it's self to a touch screen but you can become proficient with the buttons that they have on the 530 if you want to save money. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Didn't realize that the 530 has all those mtn bike features/settings! That's super cool 😎. Lately been doing a lot of road riding getting ready for Washington 70.3! This would be cool to haha for that race!
All types of riding.... MTB mostly, downhill preferred, but to prepare for that the gravel bike comes out and gets miles on it. My bikepacking bike is now the kid hauler bike but that's an even better training setup, with a 3 year old up front and a 4 month old in the chariot trailer behind. Basically anything with wheels and pedals is fun.
I just started riding and I Love It. Right now I just like being in the streets of Los Angeles in my new road bike but I'm sure as I get better I'm going to challenge myself and hit canyon road riding.
Yeah, LA actually seems like it's got some big hills for climbing. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Garmin has a feature called Popularity Heatmap that you can look into here: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=n2UzfNkYOt3iAbXqgl03W7 The Hammerhead Karoo 2 also just released a feature that shows Heat map data on the maps section of the device itself. And who knows what Garmin will do with their next round of devices. They are overdue for an update. Let me know what you end up with and how you like it! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I just started road biking for fitness and just doing a few laps around the reservoir nearby in the Bronx. I am inclined to get 530 because of it's climb pro features. There has been a sale of 530 lately for $249.
Yeah, I love that there was a sale right after posting this video! 🙌 I posted an Amazon link to that sale in the description here and it looks like a pretty solid deal. When I was making this it was $300 everywhere but Amazon is funny like that. 🤷♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Richard! I really appreciate it.
I cycle about 1x a week on my entry level diamondback around the bike paths in the neighborhood! I'm currently using my phone for gps/statistics, so a bike computer would be a huge upgrade! I've always been eyeing the Garmin 530 or Wahoo Bolt! Thanks for the video & giveaway!
Awesome. Good luck Zachary. I'll have another review soon comparing both of these two computers to each other. I'm really looking forward to making that one. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I bike on roads. I just moved here and it is rolling to hilly. After a COVID year off it would be nice to see upcoming elevation. Would be nice if Wahoo could include that feature as well.
Yeah, I would love for Wahoo to start recognizing hills on routes! Where did you move to? Hope you're finding some good people to ride with at the new location. 👌
Yeah, I think that gravel habit might be super enjoyable as the weather changes. Hopefully you'll have some luck with this 530 or maybe your 800 will hold up until Garmin updates this series of devices 🤷🏻♂️. Thanks for watching Sean and best of luck 👍🏻
Another great review and can't wait until you do the 1030 Plus since it is what I have already. I think this 530 would be a great addition to my 1030 Plus, especially since I would most likely just let Roger have it and use it. He's still on an old Cateye system. lol. Roger definitely prefers bike trails as he his not comfortable with road riding and/or traffic at all. What I ride depends on the time of day, weather, workout, etc as to what I'll ride. Keep these reviews coming!
This 1030+ is nice. The first time I used it was thought 'Wow, that screen is so nice, large and readable!" Great device and I think it's a great option for people navigating and going longer distances! Thanks for watching this one! 👌
I just wake up and say let’s do this ride. Lately TT, a month ago mountain biking, short road rides. A bike computer that does a little bit of everything is perfect.
I'm kind of the same way Chris. I currently don't have a strict training regiment. There are things I like about some of the other computers on the market but this one is really a great all around computer. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I cycle where there are no cars so bike paths, mountain biking and I am lucky enough to have a rolling hill parkway that is closed ft a 13 mile loop Sunday may thru a October. I prefer climbs over descents. Maps is missing from my Fenix 5 and edge 130 that seems useful when mountain biking new areas .
Oh man Steve! That sounds amazing. Dealing with all of these cars is such a pain. And yes this Garmin does have good trail navigation options but currently on the 530 software version 8.0 and 8.1 I'm having trouble getting TrailForks working. 👌
Thanks Matt, great timing I've been in the market for a bike computer. One question.... Does rain or sweat dripping on the touchscreen of the 830 model activate the buttons?... I feel it's too soon to throw my name in for an entry 😉😁 But country roads are my favorite..
You're in the running! 😉 I haven't done a ton of testing of the 830 touch screen but I know that it's been significantly improved from the 820 which was a mess. I still wish it had optional buttons and a way to temporarily turn off the touch screen. It's be nice to lock it when you're in the middle of a 100 mile race and just need the basic details to be there when you need them and not change because you sweat onto the touch screen. 💧 Thanks for commenting Jim!
Thanks for the video. I’m kind of new into road cycling (currently based in Thailand), but have been a huge fan of the sport pretty much since I was a kid, especially the grand tours. I’m currently looking my first bike computer with GPS navigation instead of using my smartphone (Komoot app) or being depended on the guys I’m riding with. I’m kind of undecided between the Edge 530, Edge 830 and Element Roam, since the Bolt V2 is not yet available in Thailand. The color screen is definitely a must, and as of now navigation is the most important feature for me. Training/fitness stats might become important in the future. From watching several reviews, the map details on a Garmin device seem to be better than Wahoo, but Wahoo has an “edge” on the user interface. I guess the touchscreen on Edge 830 could become annoying with sweaty hands or rough terrains as we tend to include gravels on our rides. I’m leaning a little bit towards Edge 530 with the Bolt V2 in a close competition. I guess it comes down better navigation or better user interface. Your reviews are definitely helpful, and it would be great in the future if a review could include the actual feed/video of the navigation. I have only found 1-2 videos showing the actual use of navigation. Anyway thanks for the review.
Thank you so much for the kind words Tomu! I think something like the 530 is a solid option. I’ll try to include more actual navigation video in future posts. Thanks for the recommendation! 👌
I like endurance rides troughout the landscapes, longer the better. timetrial bike or cyclo with gravel tires is my choise :) -depending on the route chosen or time on hand :)
After 20 year pause from road, I just bought myself a new road bike… would love to add a 530 to it 🙂 And the fact that it also has nice features to use with my MTB is just win win. Thanks for a nice review with pros and cons of the 530 😉
20 year break? I bet the bike tech has changed a good bit in that time. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Currently right now training for Ironman Chattanooga, so I see a lot more hill workouts in my upcoming future lol. Overall just love getting out early mornings and pushing some pedals, it's my mental decompression time.
The weather has been warm here, so I need to do the same and get out for some of those early morning rides. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment Chris! I really appreciate it. 👍
Road riding for a few years, started with a mountain bike though until the mud caused problems in the house. I actually ride late evenings or at night a lot of the time.
We've been having longer days here so an evening ride would actually an option for me right now. But the 530 is a good option for both road and mountain biking. Best of luck and thanks so much for watching David! 👌
Sounds amazing Perry! I love climbing also. I'll have to make a trip to Utah soon! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand I have been using the 520 plus which I loved but I tossed it in my bike bag and something cracked the screen. It’s unreadable. I was looking at the 530 as a replacement. It has a much nicer screen and is so much brighter.
Great review! Now I’m m really looking at getting this computer… I only ride mountainbike, and love to shred rough, techy and jumpy trails. I currently have a Garmin Edge 130, but tired of it needing to charge almost every ride - especially when it’s cold out . Would the Garmin Edge 530 be a good choice for this type of riding, or is there better alternatives out there, that I should take a look at? Or should I wait for a 530 plus, or even a 540? Thanks!
Yes, the 530 would be my recommendation. My only hesitation would be the that the 540 could come out at any time. I have no idea 🤷🏻♂️ but I’d guess sometime in the next year or so.
@@mlegrand Great, thanks. I was thinking about that too... On the other hand, they really doesn't have any reason to realease it as of right now, since its only the usb-c port that it is lacking - Otherwise all specs are still great. I guess time will tell.
Sorry Brian! I love having a dedicated GPS computer but phones do work. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Sounds fantastic Todd! Country roads are my favorite also. Anywhere to avoid traffic. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
That sounds smart! I need to get into more gravel roads in the future. I might have to invest in a gravel bike this fall. 🤔 Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
+1 on recommending the Garmin. It is a robust product that covers tons of bases. I would love to listen to you talk about ingratiation between a watch, headunit, smartphone ecosystem for fitness tracking. You've said the recommended workouts aren't all that good, but how tight a read can a 360* garmin ecosytem get on your vitals/fitness? I might also ask how the less expensive Garmin watches do tracking your fitness over time compared to the fancier, more optioned out watches, like the Enduro watch I can't wait to hear more about!! My buddy did a foot-ed Everesting event where he hiked up the mountain and rode the lift down. That's the kind of mountain biker I'd like to be! (slight hyperbole). It was awesome to see a little MTB action in the montages. Have you heard of the Rule of 3 Races? I like hte idea of those. XOXO
Yeah, I'm a horrible mountain biker but it's been fun after buying Lance's old bike. I don't think the Garmin workouts are all that bad, it's just that there are probably better options out there. At the end of the day, I think it's just important to be doing workouts and the type of workout is less important. I don't think there is much difference in the calculation of fitness (or VO2Max metrics) between the high-end and low-end Garmins but the higher-end watches have sleep tracking which I really enjoy. Maybe you borrow this Enduro for a few days while you're out here? I'm actually over due for my 100 day review of that watch. I need to get that recorded and out the door in the next few weeks. And the giveaway. 😢
Hey there Matt, great video. I really like the look of the features on the Garmin Edge 530 and the price being a mountain biker but i want a device for hiking to but don't want to buy 2 devices. Is the 530 any good for hiking? or can you recommend a device which is both good for hiking and biking? Cheers
Well if you just hike occasionally this might work. You'd get distance elevation gain. Lot of stuff that you'd enjoy while hiking. If you tend to hike a lot, I'd probably suggest a watch that could work for both sports. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Thanks for replying so quick. Hiking is only now and again and the device would only be for navigation and its maps so i know what hill or mountain i'm on and how to get off safely if the weather\visibility turns bad. Making routes for long walks\hikes across mountainous areas or moorland would be good to. Have looked at the Garmin eTrex 32x but its the same price as the Edge 530.
Hi Matt. I am tempted to move from Wahoo and back to garmin just for the Trailforks features as I mountain bike more than I road bike and Wahoo's navigation isn't grear for MTB Trails in my experience.
You know, it’s tempting. Maybe see what Garmin does next with this series? 🤷🏻♂️ I will say that a recent firmware update broke Trailforks but I’m sure they will get that situated here soon.
Getting back into road riding after being away since the birth of my sons. I prefer open roads but here in LA they’re hard to come by unless you drive out of town.
And driving out of town probably takes a while. Glad you're getting back into it. These kids will keep us busy! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I do both MTB and Road riding. Just need a device for navigation purposes. I had used my phone navigation and speed monitoring, but the display dims often, battery drains pretty quickly with GPS and display on frequently. What would you suggest me to get ? Garmin 530 or something else ? I noticed that SmartWatch's now days can show basic turn by turn navigation. And how accurate are the sensors of a smartwatch compared to dedicated sensor like Garmin speed, heart rate & cadence sensor?
I think if you're biking, you'd prefer a bike computer over a smart watch. The 530 would be a very safe decision for MTB and road riding. I think Garmin does MTBing better than anyone at this point. My only hesitation would be that this device is a bit old and due for a product refresh any time now. But it could be years. Who knows 🤷♂️ Keep me posted on what you end up with and how you like it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand 530 is really a good option. Today i used Galaxy watch 3 for a 50 km ride. It's good, the planned route syncs from the Komoot . And you can start directly from the watch, i am pretty satisfied with the Watch.
Great review. I prefer road and gravel riding. Began bikepacking recently as well. Looking forward to the Garmin Edge 530 and Wahoo Bolt V2 comparison!
Been riding on roads off and on for about 8 years, more serious in the past 3 years though. I enjoy the long grinding hills that you can settle into a groove and climb at a steady pace. Descending is fun too, but still a little cautious about high speed corners. Usually ride with just myself and girlfriend however interested in more group rides.
Great review! If I paired a speed sensor to the 530 to record more accurate ride distances and took it to a bike park with lifts, would the Garmin only record when the wheel is in motion (aka going downhill)?
I've never tested that but in theory, the distance would be coming from the speed sensor so it seem like that would work. What about just pausing your GPS computer?
Very nice review, thanks. I am now using the Edge 130, but often I find myself needing just a little bit more info on the screen (esp with navigation). This seems to be a big step up. I ride gravel mostly, and tarmac. Would love to pick up my MTB againz but my fork is in desperate need of some maintenance ;-)
That 130 is a great device! I'd keep using it and see what Garmin does with this 5xx series next. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Hi! I mostley ride mtb trails around where i live, but they tend to be boring after i while. I have friends who knows new trails close by, but since I have three kids, its hard to sync rides with them. This is reason why I need a garmin edge 530, to be able to expand my trail roots. Best regards, Björn
Awesome Björn, the 530 would be a great option. BTW, I also have three kids. It's hard to fit these rides in but I'm thankful for the breaks. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Thanks for the video! I’m mostly on my TT bike on my trainer but I occasionally go outside and even on my road bike! Btw, How cool are you training with Eric and Paula? Do a video about that!
Well, Eric and Paula are way too slow for me. 😂 I actually don't typically train with them. I was just visiting the Bend area and got to swim with them in the river that once. I did film something with Eric a few years back. Super fun! 🎥 Thanks so much for watching Arman!
When I purchased the 530 about half a year ago, it seemed to be the perfect device. Small, no touch screen and tons of features. But now that summer is here and I am doing my long rides outside again, the device keeps crashing almost always after a couple of hours. At first it looses all bluetooth connections and then freezes, so that I have to do a hard reset. The only good thing is, that in most of the cases no data is lost and after the reset it restarts, where it crashed. Kind of frustrating though.
Yeah Michael, that sounds super frustrating. Is it overheating? Weird that it just started this summer. Have you talked to Garmin about it or the store that you purchased it? I bet they could send you a replacement if you've got something going on with that one. Thanks for posting this feedback. I think it's super helpful for everyone reading. 👌
As a father of three, I don't have the time to ride anytime I want; so early mornings are my time to ride. I live in the midwest where we have a lot rolling hills for road riding. I use my garmin watch to record my rides along with a speed and cadence sensor. I plan my rides ahead of time and memorize where I need to go so I keep the routes pretty simple. It's been a great way to explore the area but without navigation it makes it hard to deviate from my route. I do keep my phone with me in case I get really lost. Are you able to connect a watch for HRM and bike sensors to the 530?
I am also a father of three. I might have to pick up that early morning ride habit. Life gets too busy once everyone wakes up and gets moving here. But you would love the navigation on this 530. It's a solid device. Best of luck to you with the giveaway and thanks so much for watching Jericho!
Hi Matt. Thanks for the content of the video. I am just starting out in cycling and got myself a road bike. Been wanted to start way back, finally got budget to do so. Been checking out on bike computers as well. Wanted to check with you what do you think about using a garmin watch(fenix 6x) as a bike computer comparing to an actual bike computer? Can’t really get much content about this out there. Would like to listen from you. Thanks so much and stay safe :)
A watch like the Fenix 6 would work well but a cycling computer is super nice to have with screens set up specifically for cycling. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Yeah, I really want to hop on a gravel bike and give that a try. Seems like a good idea. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Boa tarde! Estou indeciso em comprar gramin 130 Plus ou o garmin 530! Faço ciclismo de estrada e ás vezes trilhos porque tenho uma Bike de grave! Comparando os dois, pelo preço e funcionalidade, que recomenda? Obrigado 😊
It might be worth waiting to see if Garmin updates their cycling computers but the 530 would be an excellent option if you can find one on sale. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
As a father of three there is not much time and no more all day ride. My go to is mtb more than 25 years. Last year or so, I would like to try road bike or gravel.
I do mostly road riding. Prefer either long climbs or rolling terrain with with good punchy hills. Want to do more gravel, but the trails around here are a little intimidating for me for now
I right there with you. I have a new MTB but some of these trails are tricky. I’d love to get into some gravel riding but it’s not as convenient Thanks so much for checking out the video! 👌
Bike camping like bike-packing? I’ve been interested in trying something like that at some point. I need to step it up and do some testing this summer. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Yessir, I recommend having a buddy to hitch a bike trailer that is loaded down with cold beer. Just tell him he'll go faster down hill with the added weight! Have fun!
Thanks for the video of this product. I've recently just bought this product before i seen the Element Bolt v2 and would love to see a side by side comparison. I just started biking in the last couple weeks. I've been riding on the road and want to eventually trail riding.
Awesome Darrell! You'll have to let me know what you think after a few weeks. I'm excited to make that computer comparison video. Should be a fun one. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I wish I could "love" this instead of just "liking" it!
Thanks for the awesome review, mainly road riding but slowly venturing onto the gravel scene!
Just started road biking and I’m going to purchase my first bike computer. These are some really useful information thanks u so much 🙏🙏
You're so welcome. Best of luck with road biking. I think you're going to love it. 👌
I'm riding the Erie Canal trail, in parts, starting close to home, and I JUST got my Garmin Edge 530 a week ago. Great video, thank you!
Awesome! Hope you're enjoying it. 🙌
Thank-you. Appreciate all the info you’ve shared on this device and the new Elemnt Bolt. I enjoy gravel riding! Peace, quiet and rural calm.
and less cars! Thanks Kerry!
I just got into road cycling and enjoy the quiet time. Looking to buy my first bike computer. Thanks for the review
You are so welcome Camille! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Love bike touring and finding new bike routes
Me too Darek! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it.
I enjoy long rides on long flat country roads. The quiet time on my own gives my time to clear my head and look at the countryside.
That sounds amazing Paul! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
I think you got me convinced, since I ride mtn. bike and gravel this computer sure is perfect for both! Thanks for the review.
Love riding the road in my local Trough of Bowland and the Bowland forest area. It's beautiful and the roads are quiet.
Sounds amazing. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting Rob!
Great review Matt. I am not a Garmin fan but I appreciate you honest look at the 530. Side note, love the effort you put into your production, very top quality.
Thank you so much TrailSage! Do you prefer Wahoo or some other brand?
@@mlegrand I switched over to the Bolt a couple years ago Matt. I find the elevation accuracy to be much better. I do currently still use a Garmin watch for my runs, but I am hoping to switch that over to Wahoo as well.
@@TrailSage - They make that Wahoo Elemnt Rival which would be a pretty nice option 🤷🏻♂️
Great review! Looking forward to working on those jump metrics with you 😉👊
Oh hell yeah! 🚵🏼♂️
😆👍
Wow Matt - that intro was spot-on; some seriously well-executed photography and editing in there. Really appreciate your real-world review style also. I do have to agree about the feel of Garmin Edge charging ports - first noticed it on the Edge 1000 which felt about as water-tight as a sponge.
😂 - Yeah, I haven't heard of too many people having issues but you've got to think that this usb port hinge breaks all the time on people right?
Great review and info. Thank you. I love Road and Cross.
Thanks for watching Andrew! Best of luck 🤞
Saludos de Tenerife Matt definitely climbing paradise 🤘🏻🤘🏻🏝🌎🏔
That sounds amazing! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand thanks to you really good job ... keep doing it 🤘🏻🤘🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks for the review!
I think you'll love this. Keep me posted on what you think. 👌
Ive been cycling for a year! Started with road! Then started mountain biking, and now I am adding some gravel to the mix!
Sounds similar to my story. I really want to mix in some gravel. Thanks for watching John! I really appreciate it. 👍
I use a simple single speed to commute, but I got myself a gravel bike this year and I do a mix of roads and trails to mix things up!
I'd love to pick up a gravel bike at some point Simon. You'll have to keep me posted on how you're liking it. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great review!
Thank you Simon!

I use the Garmin 800 .
That sounds awesome Darell! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Good stuff. Depending on the mood I’m open to all sorts of biking. Lately a lot of road riding with a bit of gravel & MTBing peppered in!
I’m looking forward to making that one! I’m aiming for 2 weeks from now. Thanks for Subscribing buddy! 👏
Great review! Do you think it’s still a good buy in 2023? The prices are pretty low for the 530 now a day
Personally I’d google around to see if there are rumors of their next iteration.
This would be a good option. Awesome goal for your 50th birthday! Best of luck with it and thanks so much for watching Rick!
Hey Matt, big fan of the channel, would you take the 530 over the ROAM? Theyre both about the same price at the moment, thx!
Favorite riding: Mixed surface gravel, and getting into bike packing.
Yeah, this would be nice! Do you currently just use a watch on the bike?
@@mlegrand I have a little 130 that i sync up to my watch, not super awesome, but works.
That’s awesome Adam! Yeah, those kids get heavy on the hills! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Great review, I will buy it tomorrow, but I have a question about maps, is that device can help me to choose less used roads, i hate traffic.
Garmin has a feature called Popularity Heatmap that you can look into here: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=n2UzfNkYOt3iAbXqgl03W7
The Hammerhead Karoo 2 also just released a feature that shows Heat map data on the maps section of the device itself.

Ooh, I'd love an upgrade. I generally ride roads but I picked up a gravel habit in April. My old 800 is starting to die but it's been a trooper.
I love commuting on the city streets and bay trail in my area!
I like endurance rides troughout the landscapes, longer the better. timetrial bike or cyclo with gravel tires is my choise :) -depending on the route chosen or time on hand :)
I agree! At some point I’d like to get into more gravel riding. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
After 20 year pause from road, I just bought myself a new road bike… would love to add a 530 to it 🙂
And the fact that it also has nice features to use with my MTB is just win win.
Thanks for a nice review with pros and cons of the 530 😉
20 year break? I bet the bike tech has changed a good bit in that time. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
For me the best riding is early morning on quiet roads with friends. Yes I need to get outside more.
That sounds awesome to me. The light in the morning is great for filming also! 🎥 Thanks for watching Gerrie!
Nice video, Matt! I'm a roadie, but like to ride with faster people to remind myself that I'm not that fast.
I should have mentioned Garmin's Connect IQ working with Trainer Road's Adaptive Training in this video. 🤷🏻♂️
I love to road ride, gravel bike and mountain bike all over the Utah mountain roads and trails. Plenty of up and down.
@@perryhacker223 - I agree the screen visibility is significantly improved on this newer series. 👌
Great review! Now I’m m really looking at getting this computer…
I only ride mountainbike, and love to shred rough, techy and jumpy trails.
Used my phone for all these features and then had a crash and now I'm typing this through a shattered screen.
Sorry Brian! I love having a dedicated GPS computer but phones do work. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Fave riding: Road bike riding on rolling hills out on country roads in America’s heartland!
Sounds fantastic Todd! Country roads are my favorite also. Anywhere to avoid traffic. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Solid review. I split my time on paved and gravel roads. Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Hey there Matt,great video.
@@mlegrand Cheers, I am moved away from Garmin becuase of the software issues I had so might hold out as you suggest.
Yeah, I agree! It’s nice to get into a groove when climbing. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Favorite riding? I tend to gravitate to rail trails and back country roads… I had some health issues getting back in the saddle has been difficult
@@mlegrand Yeah, its mostley a challange. But as you, I am most thankfull for the moments on the trails. ♡
I mainly do bike touring but I'm about to start gravel biking.
Nice Zotmund! I think you'll love gravel biking. I need to find a decent gravel bike myself. Can't wait! Thanks for checking out this video!
Great insight
Thanks Trenton!
Distance commuter turned MTB by the pandemic. Aiming for a challenging century+ ride in Oct though. Good times? :)
Yeah, that sounds about right Eric! I think a lot of people are moving off the road and onto safer paths these days. Thank you for commenting!
Been riding around 18months (Covid saviour) started at 3km now regularly do 40,50 or more easily. 90%road and shared paths.
Nice work Miksterr! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
@@mlegrand Thanks Matt. I'll definitely get one but not now. Bust my budget already. Haha.
Take care there :)
Road biking is my fav but looking into a gravel bike next.
Yeah, I really want to hop on a gravel bike and give that a try. Seems like a good idea. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍
Favorite riding: road-riding on a course with rolling hills.
Good call Scott! I agree.
Vid, I have I told you that I also have 3 kids? 3 boys. It's busy. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👌
@@mlegrand thanks for making great content. And for not forgetting about swimming too
I enjoy riding road as well as gravel (rural OK is home) especially if its a bike camping excursion.
Have fun!
@@dillonring9378 - Brilliant! 😆
