    Dank je wel voor de freebie - een erg mooi gebaar.
    Ik was versteld dat je al die gegevens kon opmaken uit de elementen die geborduurd zijn op de merklap. Dat een merklap een politieke overtuiging kon overbrengen had ik nooit gedacht.

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад +1

      Dank je Cleopatra! Ja, de politiek vond zijn weg vrij vaak op oude merklappen - zelfs als ze eigenlijk niet politiek zijn, is er invloed te zien van de politiek op dat moment. Een rood school lapje bijvoorbeeld bestaat omdat er een wettelijk besluit werd genomen over een nieuw curriculum in het onderwijs. Een van de dingen daarin was de 'nuttige handwerken' waarvan het rode lapje een voortvloeisel is. Maar soms, zoals in deze lap, is het een duidelijk statement. De patriotten maakten ook lappen, die hadden dan een soort Hollandse "feest boom" met linten e.d., om te vieren dat Willen V na een poosje weer van het podium verdween! :D

    Thank you for the link to the Scottish Sampler history book. We think my husband's ancestry is Scottish sovI know I'll be stitching a Scottish sampler. We had a Russian blue kitty named Kiska, Russian for little cat, so fun to see a glimpse of your furry friend.

    I took your advice from the last video and started the 2022 SAL again in another color. I am thrilled with the results and am all caught up as of today. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge about samplers. Can't wait until April 1st! The world mourns for Ukraine and prays for a resolution. I never thought I would see refugees fleeing as happened in WWII. We have changed wagons and horses for buses and trains. I didn't see the 2022 SAL link below.

    Lovely to see your little kitty friend. Pets bring such comfort & peace which is so needed during these trying times. There are no words to fully explain the heartbreaking news we see everyday coming from Ukraine. I stitched your design & plan to make it into a little pillow with the start date of this horrible war. I pray that soon I will be able to add the end date as well. I have donated to relief efforts. Thank you!

    Hi Jacob, wow thanks for the link for the Scottish Girls Sampler Book. I'm starting to read it today, this is really special. Our hearts and prayers are with the Ukranians who are teaching me daily to be more grateful, more appreciative of what I have and how to be brave amidst the challenges I face, which are miniscule compared what they are facing daily. Your fur baby is precious. Take care.

    Thank you as always for all that you do for our community…for the concern for the world, and for the inspiration you provide. I am thoroughly enjoying the SAL. I assume you see posts in the SAL FB group. I’m not usually one to go outside of the lines with a pattern but you gave us permission to do so, and so I have made some changes. Thank you for the information on Scottish Samplers. I am Scottish and was gifted an old Scottish sampler kit. The chart is so hard to read since it was hand created and the copied. I need to figure out what to do to make it easier on my eyes!

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад +3

      Thank you so much Clare! I wasn't aware of the FB group until recently - and it's just amazing! I'm not on FB and I wouldn't eavesdrop anyway, but I really do feel quite honoured :D. As with regards to the Scottish pattern - do you have a copy shop in your town where you could enlarge the pattern? This already will make stitching it a lot easier. It's just so frustrating to follow a hard to read pattern...!

    Thank you Jacob for another wonderful and informative Flosstube... they're always great🙂. As a point of interest, the embroidered piece you showed with double-sided stitching at each end looks very much like an Ottoman-era Turkish towel. The 'bees' are likely to be silver plate which has tarnished with age. And thank you for the Ukrainian freebie... it's beautiful.💛💙

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад

      Thank you Jane! You're the third person to mention the Ottoman link! I had a look online and you're absolutely right, they have to be as the stitching is nearly identical (the types of stitching, the using of metal, the material it is stitched on). It's really lovely, and now I'm even happier with these purchases! :D

    The book is fabulous, thank you for linking. I too have to rescue kitties, but from family. One when my mother died and one from my sister. Jasper, from my sister, was rescued from his personal demon which is my niece Grace, who endlessly chased him and terrorized him. Him hides mostly. It took a year for him to feel sort of comfortable and my sister's family visited and the look on his face when he saw Grace was stunning. We didn't see him for another year and he still is paranoid she will spontaneously appear out of thin air randomly...which hasn't happened as they live half way around the world now, but he doesn't know that. He is very sweet and very old.

      Aw bless...! Animals can store so much trauma... ours do not like shoes - so around them no shoes allowed. I have heard some of the stories that happened in the house where they were kept and it's not pretty - so I can fully imagine them being pretty scared about such things. I just can't imagine harming such innocent little creatures! :(

    Thank you so much for sharing the link to the Scottish sampler book! Last summer our family discovered we're descendants of Robert the Bruce. He's my 23rd great grandfather. I've been wanted to find a Scottish sampler I could stitch for our family. It may sound silly, but I've been searching reproduction samplers and checking for the girls name in my family tree. How amazing would it be for me to stitch a sampler created by an ancestor! No luck yet, but I look forward to reading more in this book and continuing my search. Thanks again! 😊

      Oh that's pretty cool Terra! You never know - I found one sampler a few years ago and I tracked it down and showed it to a famous archaeologist - and it was his great-grandmother who had stitched the sampler. So it's not impossible - you just have to get a little lucky! :)

    Also, a guess about the sampler with the letter J. I guess she put it in because it's in her initials at the bottom (abj) maybe.

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад

      It is possible because her first name is Anje. Spelling her name with an I might cause problems (ANIE) which sounds like ANNIE. It's also possible that she added the J because the sampler is of such a late date - and by then girls wold already stitch the full alphabet on red samplers (as per the Dutch school curriculum). The initials at the bottom is AB, and then she stitched the date - the 1 is a letter I (with that little leg, which makes it look like a J). So AB1892 :)

      It is really exciting Leslie - and I hope to find out more. A lot of the research back in the 20s and 30s was groundbreaking, but we need more detailed research now into motifs and locations. Unfortunately some of the ideas from the 30s have been copied many times by more modern researchers. I do hope that by joining forces with some other researchers and collectors we can find out even more!

    Thank you for the great Flosstube! On the 1788 sampler, is the pot the orange tree is in raised in some way? It looks 3 dimensional on the video. Simply beautiful!!

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад +1

      Thank you Amy! The pot is not raised but it looks raised as it was stitched with a near black floss. When someone tried to either wash it or when it got damp, the black created a strange 'shadow' by bleeding into the fabric. Interestingly, it's a barrel as well and not a pot - these little trees would be planted in these big tubs, and that's what the stripes represent I guess! :D.

      Thank you so much Connie! Supporting Ukrainian designers is really hard to do, as you have to have absolute certainty that they are using a genuine location for their shop and are not somewhere else and posting that they are. One thing that you can do to check is to follow up a little about the stitcher, check their social media posts, and see if they are genuinely from Ukraine (and not just for the past month or so). It sounds really paranoid, but as soon as folks started searching Etsy for Ukrainian sellers, a lot of shops popped up that had never been there before. :(

    Hi Dear Jacob ~ First, let me relay a heartfelt appreciation for both your eloquence and elegance in expressing your feelings on the devastation of Ukraine : her people, her land. It truly is difficult to grasp in its entirety and fully comprehend the gravity. Modern Technology has brought to our homes the very breath of the tragedy at hand by iPhones of those so traumatized /frightened for us to actually see - along with news crews. To be there, experiencing this atrocity first hand...... unimaginable. And for you, touching VERY close to home with your beloved friend. I pray that she is safe still and remains so. Jacob, Such wonderful treasures you've found - just lovely. Congratulations indeed . Respectfully , you did have a guest that stole the show however... Mira is a Beauty and sweeeet - you can just tell. LOVED the tail waving from your lap !!!!! The purring, joy and warmth these Creatures of God bring us is such a panacea for harsh realities . What ever would we do with out their companionship - especially in recent covid years and times such as these ? ! Thank you, Jacob for a wonderful visit. Truly enjoy each post of yours. Take good care . All the best, marcia

      Hi Mary! Thank you, it really is quite gorgeous and I'm so happy with it. The red deer shows up on lots of samplers, and exactly where it first shows up is not certain. However, it was believed that deer could kill snakes and would devour them - and as the snake was a symbol of evil (the devil), its enemy was Christ. So for a long time, the stag or a deer has been a symbol for Christ. It is also an animal that is being hunted, which again links it to the passion. Deer have a very long history in iconography and we see them a lot on samplers! :)

    The Russian invasion has affected me so that I cannot stitch, I'm so frustrated with the injustice and cruelty, I don't trust anything Putin says, or any ceasefire he agrees with. I'm ashamed of the Russian people who believe the propaganda put out by Putin's regime. It's up to the Russian people to deal with this and get rid of him, not support him.

      It is so devastating... I feel so sad that the amount of disinformation and propaganda being fed to people is so insidious that it is hard to know what the truth is any more. And how terrifying must it be to live in a country where this is happening. I am constantly amazed at the bravery of those who do stand up against this evil at their own risk.

    • @rhondaalbrecht
      @rhondaalbrecht 2 года назад

      Part of the disinformation is that Putin is the bad guy. In reality, those that wish you to believe this are gaslighting you. Yes, the Ukrainian AND the Russian people are being used, for the Satanic Globalist New World Order 'Club'. They manipulated it, and they have a history of doing this, for over 1,100 years, playing two sides against each other, and benefitting from both sides, financially, raping resources of particular countries, et al. They're trying to decimate the Ukraine to hide the corruption that they, themselves, caused that is now about to be exposed, which reveals THEM as the culprits. They're trying to cover their own butts. So, if you really want to blame someone... look at the UN member states, look at the likes of Joe Biden, who is a puppet for them, along with Barack Obama, and everyone connected with them. Look at Queen Elizabeth II of the UK. Yep... the Chairwoman of the Steering Committee of 300, which is the organization that controls the NWO, orchestrates and manipulates the entire world. Don't think so? Find an online copy of Dr. John Coleman's book, one that they tried to intimidate him into not publishing, by threatening his life... "The Steering Committee of 300". It's EYE-opening. That's just ONE resource, there are others, as the Holy Spirit has revealed to me over the last 22 years.

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  2 года назад

      This one was really quite clean already - and I could see evidence of it having been washed (or it having been damp once) where the dark threads bled into the linen. This is reason enough not to try and wash a sampler. I wouldn't ever wash them myself - if I were to, I'd have a professional textile expert do that part of the job. The cleaning I did do was removing some dust from it, then carefully sewing it onto a piece of linen, which was then attached to a frame. No rusty materials involved and no acids, so it is nicely protected now :).

      Thank you Allison! We can only do so much individually, and the stresses of what the world does should not fall on your shoulders alone - so try and let that guilt go. You're not the only one who doesn't know much about the history of the Netherlands as I have to shamefully admit, that I know too little myself! History is so complex so it's been really interesting doing research. It's interesting that about 7 years after this sampler was finished, William V fled to England and the patriots then celebrated and stitched "freedom trees" (with Dutch flags and ribbons) on their samplers! So there's the two camps who were both stitching, and it's quite intriguing to see them :D.
