While there are numerous collections available already, if there's one Christian artist who is overdue a definitive "best of" then it's Larry Norman. This latest reissue from Solid Rock makes a valiant effort to redress that omission. 'White Blossoms From Black Roots' has a checkered history; originally set to hit the streets in 1987 it first saw light of day 10 years later (albeit with subtly changed track-listing). A further decade on we Brits get to join in the fun. The 13 tracks seem perfectly chosen - a mixture of classics from Norman's pivotal 1970s output, previously unreleased tracks and alternative mixes. Expected songs from the " Trilogy" albums are all present and correct - "I Wish We'd All Been Ready", "Why Don't You Look Into Jesus", "Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music" and "The Outlaw" - plus a couple from the unfairly under-regarded 'Something New Under The Son'. One of these, the charming party piece "The Sun Begins To Rain", features jazzy piano from actor/comedian Dudley Moore. So often "best of" CDs can be padded out with filler material but not here. While fans may argue over tracks which have been excluded each song earns its place - be it the rockabilly of "The Man From Galilee" or the White-Album-psych-rock of "Looking For The Footprints". The same applies to the bonus tracks, including some of Norman's work with the late lamented producer/singer Mark Heard. Taken on its own terms, and without comparison to the other collections available, this album forms a handy cut-out-and-keep account of the cream of Norman's output. Here's hoping it also serves to bring this CCM icon to the attention of a whole new generation of Christian musicians and music fans.

I had this on Larry's "Upon This Rock" album. Larry single-handedly invented Christian rock, as well as the iconic "One Way" hand sign. The story goes when he was having a concert, the crowd cheered so much for him, Larry pointed up to heaven, meaning "Give glory to God", but the crowd took it to mean "One Way", meaning only one way to heaven and that's Jesus. I got saved back during the Jesus Movement of the late 60s-early 70s, and let me tell you, the last 52 years have been quite a ride!
I remember as a little girl in the 70s and these two white women came to my church visiting and they sang this song! The singing was so beautiful but the words were so sad, I never forgot them and I will never forget Jesus Christ who died on the cross for me!

I heard Larry sing this song in a Christian coffee shop in Minneapolis the winter of 71-72. The song is just as powerful now as it was then. Yes, we must all be ready for the return of Jesus. No one knows the day or hour when he will return for those who call him their Lord and Savior.

This thought works in the moment, but if you apply this to all eternity, that the Father has not engineered into the economy a way to make it that no one will be left behind, then this is BLEAK. Pamela Funk When I met him at church and asked for his autograph, he said he wanted all the glory to go to God. That was why I was disappointed later when I met him at Cam Floria's Music Seminar in the Rockies. He actually thought I wanted his autograph, and offered to give me one. Truthfully, I think that it was a combination of things: His acclaim as the Father of Christian Rock was part of it. The pain he was in physically almost certainly played a role as well.

The "Rapture" was for the disciples of Jesus in Jerusalem. He returned and took them at some point between the years 67 and 73, the years of the Great Tribulation when the "beast" Nero (666) set up the abomination of desolation (of Jerusalem). Go back and re-read. You'll see it all clearly. We are not waiting for a rapture, we're waiting for our own glorious deaths and/or the end of this world by fire, according to Scripture.

Excellent song and is very true. I had received Jesus the year before this came out. I was 10 yrs old. Our church the following year had a movie night and played the film, "A Thief In The Night". This song was played in that movie. At the end of it more than half the congregation went to the alter to be saved that night. We need this again now more than ever. Pray God will move this movie and song back to churches and theaters quickly, as we are in the end times closer then ever, right now. 🙏 You really don't want to be left behind. In Jesus name Amen. It's so true that we must all be warned about the coming times of tribulation where there will be such great suffering! At some point the faithful will join God and all of the saints for unending singing His praise and then there's the matter of all of the rest who have rejected the super obvious opportunity presented to them who will be tortured for all eternity. Unless of course everyone will make it to Heaven. That would be the universalist interpretation. From Larry Norman's point of view this is probably a dangerous deceit. If you are a Calvinist you would believe that those who go to Heaven are the elect, chosen at the creation of the Earth by God. All of the rest will die, or rather suffer forever for some reason. If you are Larry Norman you will probably strongly disagree with Calvinism. If you follow what is said in Ecclesiastes and Job, you will believe that there is not really much after death, certainly not Heaven an Hell as described in the New Testament. If you are Larry Norman you will probably find some way to gloss over the changing view of Heaven and Hell and God and Satan through the Old Testament and even within the New Testament.
