  • Very rare footage and aerial shots of the Berlin Wall in 1961, now restored with artificial intelligence software. You hear the well-known "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech by John F. Kennedy held in Berlin 2 years later in 1963 to give support to the people living in West-Berlin.

Years ago, some roadside sales people in India were selling pieces of the Berlin wall. In India.....it was a good joke. Notice please that Kennedy didn't say: " Ich bin Berliner Pfannkuchen" (I'm a donut). "Ich bin EIN Berliner" means (in this context)
    "I am a (citizen) of Berlin" as well as: "Ich bin EIN Amerikaner" can mean "I am a US citizen". It may not be a very proper Hochdeutsch, but it is acceptable and everyone understood perfectly well the strong message of this statement (especially in that tragic situation). The supposedly more correct version: "Ich bin Berliner" unfortunately means "I am FROM Berlin" (and he was not, so it would also sound "funny"). Thus, the Soviets could mock Kennedy's alleged "incompetence" or "ignorance" by picking on both sentences. Because this sentence troubled them very much, they really hated Kennedy. They ridiculed him this way (the donut theory) and ignorant people kept repeating the Soviet propaganda for years. Let's not be fooled. This is one of the most important sentences of the 20th century and will be written down in history as such. Thank you, Mr. President!

    • @charlesgrant-skiba5474
      @charlesgrant-skiba5474 2 года назад +3

      @@thomasandersonrittberg2903 It's easy. The Soviets cut off West Berlin from the world. They surround it with barbed wire and a wall. They put additional army reserves on high alert. They wanted to break the resistance of this part of town. They wanted to starve people, deprive them of electricity, water, medicine and heating (and the winters were very cold at that time) and, above all, they wanted to punish the Berliners and deprive them of their dignity. The Americans open the airlift. They provided medicine, food, coal for heating, milk for babies and everything necessary. This provokes the Soviets to anger. The world stands on the brink of a new war. And here, Kennedy appears in the undermined and threatened Berlin. The head of the world's greatest power unexpectedly appears in the middle of the enemy territory. You can imagine how, very, very risky that was. World War II ended only "recently". And then these words to the terrified people, unsure of their fate - "I am one of you!" . This bold gesture changed the history. West Berlin recovered and never gave up. And the Western world has completely changed its attitude towards Germans, who, after all, were their enemies not so long ago. Hope it will be helpful somehow. Greetings.

    It was monstrous to devide a city like this. And actually, Berlin was not the only one to suffer such fate.
    For example there is the village of "Veľké Slemence" (or Szelmenc) on the present day Slovakian - Ukranian border. It was devided by the Soviet border in 1945, and remains so. Former neigbors had to travel as much as 600 kilometers (to get the papers, permits etc.) to visit each other. A few years ago they did get a proper border crossing though. That's something.

    • @pwc_uk

      Still these situations are different as people from Czechoslovakia could travel to the USSR (and vice versa provided they were not considered by the KGB as “suspicious”) as both belonged to the same bloc, while visiting the West Berlin by East Berliners was impossible and vice versa was dangerous to West Berliners as they could be imprisoned without proper reason

    The construction of the Berlin Wall manifested inferiority of communism in comparison with democracy because its supreme purpose was to prevent people from fleeing from Communist countries to Western nations and not vice versa. Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989, many Communist states also face extinction. Democracy is not a perfect political system, but people could progress only with the framework of democracy.

    Think of it this way. If you were a Canadian citizen, you would say "I am Canadian", meaning you are Canadian in a literal sense. But if you were from another country but wanted to show that you identify as a Canadian, then you would more likely say "I am a Canadian". It's important to remind that the Soviet Russia was the first country to set free their colonies... Lenin did that, right after the October Revolution (1917). The thinking of the III International Socialist, lead by Lenin, was that they need to took power and overthrown the Tzar to stop the Imperialist War (World War 1914-1918) and set free the colonies...
