Wow! Can't believe how many people have watched this video. Thanks so much! While i hope you all got some value from the information in the video, I want to note that this is in no way the only way to film dance (films, music videos...etc), but some tips to filming concept videos that i've learned while shooting. Thanks all for the wonderful comments !
Thank you! Definitely helped alot, I am about to film a dance video for the first time... I like the idea of using a wide angle like you said because I think I am going to do some of the camera "movement" in post production... I was going to do a dolly zoom too but the "zoom out" part was gonna be done in post...If I wasn't a beginner, and If I had a second crewguy with a wireless monitor pulling zoom/focus I might attempt an actual dolly zoom
I'm actually really glad I came across this. I've been looking to work with more dancers, and doing a bit more filming for dance so this actually helps out a lot because I know what things to expect and what things to do.
So if i wanna do this in two different places and using only one song, shud i record myself dancing twice in each place then mix them into one during the editing phase
use different angels...so you dane more times...but one time you got the camera infront of you..one time up high looking down and so on...it feels like there are different people watching you from different angels...one thing i would like is to have movement in my camera...but as a solo artist i do not think there is a way to do that by yourself..or is there? The kind of movement you also represented in this video...Only slider comes to mind...The reason why i wanna have movement is because I wanna record my face...or should i record my face in different scenes upfront - just like we see in the music videos? I do not know how to do that yet and probably my camera is not good anough for face shoot.
@@10TheDancer03 You can shoot wider than you intend the final composition to be, and then crop into the image in editing and keyframe a movement in the direction of your choice :)
This helps so much! Especially when I can’t afford a gimbal at the moment. I’m in the dance community in Vegas, it’s very rare for people who do both dance and film here so I’m glad there’s a video about this!!
This is a great video! Im a dancer and film student and im starting to film and edit dance/music videos and i wanted to see other people’s takes on it and yours was really thorough in a good amount of time. Not too much overload of info. Cant wait to watch more of your vids!
OMG! I had NO idea you have a YT channel! I love your work at Steezy! Thanks for the tips! They were really helpful. I would like to see a video like this to produce vertical dance videos (like... about gear). Thanks again for sharing your knowledge! Keep creative :)
Thanks, Gr8 tips. I’m an instructor of Argentine Tango and I’m interested in how to film my students better. Mostly for they’re studies, but for website and promos.
I do agree with everything you said... but.. when I clicked this video I was expecting to get technical tips. How to set up lights, dealing with auto-focus, aperture problems, high ISO -settings causing noise footage etc
your video is the first one that comes up when you search "recording choreography with gimbal" as I'm about to do my first gig like that. I had to be super specific because I was afraid "recording choreography" would be too broad. Definitely going after that recorded dance ig look that you see in so many choreo dance videos. I'm going into this gig with JUST your info in this video lol.
Thank you for the tips !! I'm from India living in canada and I love to shoot and post the dance videos on youtube !! I would sure try these tips out❤️❤️
This was so helpful! I am a dancer/video creator and I just recently started filming my own choreography. It is definitely difficult starting out so I am happy I came across your channel and this vid! Thank you!
Hi Ashlie, this vid helped me so much and I recently purchased the Tokina 11-16mm. I will definitely be implementing your tactics into the next dance and concept video I shoot!
In terms of frame rate, which do you prefer when it comes to shooting dance videos? higher or lower frame rate? this is very helpful btw :D thank you so much!
I've been filming dance videos for about two years now. What I noticed and learned from both filming and watching other videos (this is just my opinion), what frame rate you use depends on what purpose you have with the video. I use 24fps 99% of the time. 30fps feels like it's a vlog, and 60fps shows ALL the details and makes everything look really smooth, which creates the risk of the dance looking "weak", and we are not really used to watching 60fps in dance anyway. I'd say 24fps is a safe choice.
Thank you, that's very helpful. I'm starting to take videos of dance concerts and performances that happen unplanned. Street dances etc. I love your tips. Thanks again.
nice very informative ive learned a lot about the tips ....now i can apply to my Videos im Dancer and i love to make filming danceVideos ... im mark from Philippines
I have a question about the music... when your dancing on a song... how do you put the song in the video so that it matches with the timing and dance? I’m always confused about that part.
fin on youtube "How to make cool dance videos STEEZY's video team" (at 4 min 45 sec) he gave a dope tip for the camera settings regarding OUR question about sharpness of moves and i used it and it looks nice.
Hey Ashlie, great vid! You mentioned you were going to post another vid about shooting without a stabilizer. Have you done that yet? I couldn't find it.
Hey! Had a second camera person on a gimbl for my dance shoot .. he didn’t have much experience and unfortunately stayed pretty static. These shots are Closer up, and I have a farther away tripod shot. Any recommendations for adding camera movement in post production
Question: With regard to your lens selection, I noticed the lens you use has a speed of f/2.8. I've recently purchased a Canon EOS M50 with a 22m f/2 lens (35mm equivalent due to cropping), and I was planning on trying it out shooting some dance videos. Do you ever have issues shooting groups of dancers where you can go too narrow on the FOV thus having some dancers out of focus? Is it usually better to try and keep every dancer in focus? I know it depends on what you're going for, I'm just wondering your opinion as a general rule of thumb. Also do you think 35mm equivalent won't be wide enough angle for larger groups? If I do need to go wider I could get Canon's 11-22mm (18-35mm equivalent) f/4-5.6 but sacrifice that narrow FOV - or should I splurge on the Sigma 16mm (26mm equivalent) f/1.4 to get a wide angle with a super narrow FOV? Thanks so much and great video!
Great video! I'm about to shoot a commercial involving dancers freestyling. Should I use one song and repeating it on set (this might be uninspiring for the dancers) or should I use multiple songs that are in the same BPM?
i would definitely use different songs with various moods! It will help the dancers get into some sort of groove and will give you more dynamic footage!
Hugo Terpstra most of the time I rely on natural lighting! A lot of the locations I use have windows that I open completely to utilize as much natural light as possible. If it’s a night shoot let’s say, I have some cowboy studio lights !
Using crane, do you record the dance from the beginning to the end moving around, or in small pieces, stopping the recording, and then resuming it again in a different place with a different angle? Do you think crane is appropriate to shoot ballet videos, or is it too much of a distraction, good only for hip-hop dance?

when you are filming a dance video, what aperture are you using most of the time?
I been researching about it and so far you are the only that explains how to shoot dance videos better than most people on RUclips.
You are very helpful thank you for this well articulated video.
I searched for tips how to dance on camera, but found tips how to film dances... I should change my hobby
did you stick with it?
I got a dance video to do today and a new gimbal so I watched this to brush up on my skills. Thank you
Nice! I'm glad the video helped :)
I'm actually really glad I came across this. I've been looking to work with more dancers, and doing a bit more filming for dance so this actually helps out a lot because I know what things to expect and what things to do.
You are right, there is little to none of these kind of tutorials. It's good to know that I was on the right track. Thank you!
I have been browsing randomly for tutorials that are not about gear...glad I‘ve find this one. Definitely gonna check your stuff!!
I’m shooting my first dance vide tomorrow. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for creating this!!! I didn't think that anyone would post this!!! This helped a whole lot 👍🏽

@@andrewmajesky3742 Not on 1080 :( unless you shoot 4k, and also the movement will look "robotic"

Awesome video! Whats the name of the track playing in the background?
I have a question about the music... when your dancing on a song... how do you put the song in the video so that it matches with the timing and dance? I’m always confused about that part.
Me tooo!! Someone pls answer this lol
Just add the music and keep on trying until it matches the dance
Don't delete the original music. Add the music separately in a different layer. Play both music together and try to match. Hope it helps 😊
Beautiful, thanks! ❤
thankyou for the tips! which frame rate and shutter speed are best for shooting dance video>?
Shoot with 60p just for safety
Very Informative, explained the concepts effectively.
Great tips. Thank you. Have you got any tips in regards to lighting?
What kind of camera do you use? Does it have to have a high frame rate or something? How do you get all the intensity or the sharpness of the move?

Hey Ashlie! Thanks for awesome filming tips, what's the track playing at the background - especially at the beginning?
This was really helpful, I'm a dancer myself and film for others and this was amazing thanks , support from Amsterdam
Thank you! This is great!
What framerate do you shoot at for dance videos and shutterspeed? Or is the classic 24fps 50shutter the go to?
It really depends on what I'm working on, but I've found that 24pfs with double the shutter at 120 gives a sharper effect
When you shoot at 24fps, you usually have a shutter at 50 or 60 as a standard. but i double that to get 120!
This helped me a ton thank you
thanks a lot for the tips.
Cool.... thx for your tips
