- In this video I will be talking about the different careers you can have in the NICU. Nursing is not for everybody so if you want to work in the NICU but don't want to be a nurse here are some ideas for you!! My name is Joy I have been a NICU nurse for 6 years before becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner 💕.
Who Works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?
The Nurse Manager of the unit oversees the day to day operation of the NICU. A nurse manager is in charge of the staff, financial concerns, and other paperwork, but they also work with the doctors and the staff nurses to help care for patients and families.
Respiratory Therapist specializes in treating the lungs and airways. Under the orders of a neonatologist, they take and analyze blood gasses and monitor oxygen levels. Respiratory therapists can put in breathing tubes and give respiratory treatments. They also take care of the breathing equipment.
Physical Therapist and Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapist
Work on growth and development. They help to build, strengthen, and improve the movement of the body.
Social Workers coordinate services and connect families with community resources. They help families to get the emotional, physical, and financial support they need.
Case Manager monitors the baby's hospital stay. They work closely with doctors, nurses, social workers, other health professionals, and insurance companies. Case managers organize services and resources to provide quality care while in the hospital and at home.
Lactation Specialist is someone with specialized training in breastfeeding supports the NICU staff and parents when it comes to the challenges of breastfeeding or pumping breast milk for a premature baby or a baby with special needs.
Patient care technician (PCT), is responsible for stocking the unit with the necessary supplies that the nurses, doctors, and therapists need each day. They may also perform other duties such as taking bloodwork to the laboratory or picking up medications from the pharmacy.
Unit secretary may answer the telephone organize paperwork and keeps track of who is coming and going on the unit.

Good question! Babies can have jaundice in any level of care.
@@NurseJoy- Okay thanks, I am looking into becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. I was in my bathroom about to brush my teeth and wasn't thinking about anything and then I heard the Lord say Nurse Practitioner and go look up what specialty that you want to work in....Lo in behold I just smiled andI found out that neonatal was there because I always wanted to work with babies LOL.
