  • Same 18 holes, same 18 greens, two completely different golf courses. Michigan is home to America’s only truly reversible course, and Erik’s mind gets partially blown playing it on this Adventures In Golf, presented by United.
Here’s a brief rundown on how The Loop works:
There are two routes, Red and Black. On days ending in even numbers, golfers play the Black routing. Odd days = Red routing.
Let’s say you tee off from on No. 1 on a Black day. That same spot is where you’d finish your round on No. 18 just 24 hours later on the Red.
Another example, being on the 6th tee on a Black day also means being on the 13th fairway on Red.
    It’s all kinda bananas.
Even if you’re terrible at math (like us), you can still appreciate how pure either layout is without getting bogged down with the numbers.
Erik also sat down with famed course designer and architect Tom Doak to understand his inspiration for this truly unique experience.

Harper Russell I get that. But you are playing the same 9 twice. You're still teeing off on the same tee boxes and having the same approach shots into the same positioned pins.
Most who are going to play Forest Dunes aren't coming back the next day to play the "other 9".
A one day trip to the course and you are playing the Dunes course and not wanting your time on The Loop.

Interesting to hear most ppl enjoy the second routing better, having played both I tend to agree. The thing that stuck with me is how Tom had to design it to fit logistically. IE Red 7 and Black 12 are both drivable par 4's, however they have different greens but happen on the same piece of the property using the same fairway. So every par 3 one side, another par 3 has to occur at the same property location, but on a TOTALLY different side of the "golf course" Again really hard to understand w/o being there but so many special traits that make it one of a kind. Thank you Tom for being nerdy enough to dream up, and thank you Lew for being crazy enough to make it happen!

Also, probably the best greens I've ever seen or played in my life. Just immaculate! I played a reversible 9 hole golf course several times near New Haven, Connecticut back in the '80's. By being reversible you got to play 18 holes on a nine hole course without repeating the same 9 holes. I remember that they built it that way so that the wouldn't use as much land. I wish I could remember the name of the course. All I do remember is that it was fun and inexpensive to play.

I am freaked! Imagine this: JUST TODAY I was waiting for med appointment, picked up this month's Golf Magazine Oct. 2019, and saw their featured article about Top Golf Courses... It was Forest Dunes in Roscommon MI. 9 hours ago!! I played
ONE TIME IN SIX YEARS since I retired with freaking arthritis. I used to devour Golf Magazine each month, but havent read it much in last 20 years.
By the way, that article recommended canoeing on the Au Sable River... I took my sons on that exact route 25 years ago. Current was fast!
(Back when I was alive, I played to about 8 to 10 handicap, best round 71. Lying? "No more than usual..."
Best golf lesson? June 1970, by a blind golfer. (He had eyesight when he learned to golf.)
He placed his hand on my back, waist high. Had me take a couple of real swings... Diagnosis: I needed to flex my knees more. "Like sitting myself down on a bar stool, not stiff."
...Funny: this was in Kentucky, in a DRY COUNTY (no bars in whole county!) and this outing was sponsored by my seminary, which encouraged abstaining.
No, I couldnt make these stories up...

I had this idea way in the 1970s when I was a member of club in Maryland. The course had a lot of play, so divits would accumulate as many balls were hit into the same general area on the various holes. By the end of the season the course was in poor shape. So I thought if a course were reversible, and maybe changed in direction weekly, then divits would be dispersed into the different areas and the course could repair.

One year at the course I was a looper on, they were going to close the following season to re-adjust some course contouring on the greens & work on drainage. So at season's-end weekend, they played it as the "Demolition Derby," essentially playing the course backwards: tee boxes set on the greens and you played toward the temporary greens-style cup & flagstick on the tee box. It was interesting. The country club clientele pretty much sucked anyway so it didn't make a whole lot of difference but made club selection really tricky.

Not really an entirely new concept since St. Andrews Old Course used to be played in the opposite direction than it is today. St. Andrews Old Course even hosts a regular game (weekly? monthly? yearly? not sure) in which the course is played backwards as it was originally set up. The difference between the Old Course and The Loop being that the greens are used as the teeing ground on the backwards set-up on The Old Course. Still, a novel concept in golf design on the Loop and definitely now on my bucket list.

TOC at St. Andrews is reversible. I love that Tom Doak went with the concept, but this is not a new thing, including the necessary crossover at some point where golfers have to time things to not be in the line of fire. In terms of land usage, it is by far a more economical design with a championship course being able to be placed on a 100 acre sickle of land. Love the Home of Golf.
