How to draw a night winterscape with pastels, speed drawing by Thundy

- A simple speed drawing of a full moon night winter landscape with pastels. Oups! It looks like I got too excited and put TOO many stars in the sky at the end. Personally I like it better with no stars. Anyways, it's all yours, it's good to stick to a "golden middle" or to know when to stop)... Good luck with your pastel trip!)

Hello guys!) For all your possible questions, please check out my FAQ list on this video, which is as follows:
1) What type of pastels am I using? - Answer - These are semi soft pastel chalk of a medium quality.
2) What paper am I using? - Answer - Regular black paper for pastel drawing (it's not a card or a board)
3) What am I blending colors with? - Answer - Cotton and cue tips (because I have chalk board sound problem, I use cotton, but I suggest using just fingers, because cotton takes away a lot of pastel dust)
4) Are there any liquid pastels here? - -Answer - No, these are dry pastels
5) Can you do this in other media? - Answer - Absolutely yes, be it oil pastels or watercolor
6) How did I use the colors? - Answer - So there are 5 colors of pastels here. White, Black, The Lightest Blue out of the pastels' pallet, Brownish red (warm color) and Khaki.
So the frozen lake is all about White and Lightest Blue pastel. First White then Lightest Blue on top of that. Watch how the hand changes these two colors in turn. Then the streaks of Brownish Red (warm color) first and afterwards Khaki on top of that Brownish Red. The moon is all White pastel pencil with white pastel filling. The sky is all about Lightest Blue color with its top layer darkened with Black color. At the end of the video I put a tiny bit of black on the Blue upper line of the skies and blended it almost all the way to the tree tops leaving the original light Blue color line coloring just half an inch above the tree tops. The tree tops are sharpened with Black color pastel as well.
7)Is this a tutorial video? - Answer - No, it's a speed drawing and it wasn't meant to be a tutorial video
8) Why is there red? - Answer - Because I felt like using this color here.
9)How long is this artwork in real time? - Answer - About 30 minutes or so.
You read my mind AwA......well um GREAT JOB
can i use a board-type?
Yeah what board type
+shanks le roux You might want to try pastel board or ampersand pastel board if your technique is going to be a bit rough on a paper. Hope it helps!
+Maddy Arts productions You might want to try pastel board or ampersand pastel board if your technique is going to be a bit rough on a paper. Cheers!

Hey Thundy, I just checked out some of your videos & They are AWESOMMEE!!!!!!!!!
I'm also a Potato Hey, PTMaster, thanks for your support)
Beautiful! It was very relaxing just to watch. Stunning piece! That's my next work, or something similar. I just started with oil pastels and this will be my first attempt at soft. Thank you for sharing!!
+Christopher Dupre thank you:-) wishing you best of luck on your soft pastels journey!
Wow! That's so realistic I wish I could draw like you, so beautiful!
I think her pastels must be high quality? I began doing this with soft pastels that came in a set from Hobby Lobby and I couldn't layer after the 3rd layer because of the dust quality, and unless I applied with a wide streak I couldn't get the lines rubbed out to create that misty look. I completed it with oil pastels but I had a hard time getting the subtlety of this painting to come thru because those lines too didn't want to totally dissipate. I also had difficulty finding black paper, I used a rather stuff cardboard like paper that said it was good for pastels. While the teeth of it was good for pastels, it just didn't lend itself to the painting well. Also note that cotton balls help some aspects (like the water) but I found using my fingers overall produced a better result with both oil and soft. Not as easy as it appears. Much appreciation to the artist
what brand of pastels do u have?
The soft pastels I tried are by Master's Touch and Prisma Color (Hobby Lobby packs) and the oils I ultimately completed it in are Prisma and Sakura
It might also be the paper too.
me tho
I really love your paintings and I am also inspired by your paintings.

Hi Thundy, I'm curious as to what time frame in real time did this great piece of work take from start to complete. And my second question to your great eye for great fine art is, how long have you been working with pastels. Again thanks and great work.
Well this one is 30 min in real time, pastels ...maybe you could read my previous comments on pastels how much i suffer when i use chalk...not my media for sure for this peculiar particular reason...so really no experience whatsover, just pure intuition...in pastels. Thanks for the good question though
Wow, your work despite your say challenges using chalk pastels is actually in my view pretty good...Anyway ,thanks for your response and sharing that neat winter night landscape with us it's nice.
Elaine Joy, I can't find a "reply" button to your question, so I am writing back my answer in a separate comment. "What canvas am I using?". It's just a regular black color based paper (one side for water color, the other - for pastels). Hope that helps)

OMG STOP IT THIS LOOKS SO AWESOME I WANT IT BUT OMG ANAKAKANANA STOPPP
I'm sorry if this might sound dumb but I'm new to this whole painting and drawing thing. I wanted to know what is the difference between pastels and oil pastels??
It was an awesome! video with an awesome! painting but my question is, that what type of oil pastels have been used in this video and of what brand?
Veeeeerrrryyyyy nice 😩😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ i'm so like it 😍

omg lovely drawing
so so good
It' beautiful :) I really love it
thanks for giving all the answer
wowwww,,,beautiful
really good !!!
amazing u r really very talented
Also what brand of pastels are you using? And what brand would be the best to get?
Larry, I feel I should say this. The pastels that I am using here are brand new soft pastels but they are NOT top notch. The reason why I didn't bother buying the top notch ones is because pastels is not my fav genre. So these ones that I am using can be rated 6 out of 10 quality wise. They are called "aquacolor") and are available at (tripleDoubleU.aquapaintDOTru). I might as well say, that I cringe at the feel of any sort of chalk be it hard or soft. Unlucky me((. So I don't bother progressing in this direction. It's torturous for me to use any type of chalk or to see anyone else using it. But I wish all the luck to whoever has true passion for it. Btw, my fav genre is watercolor.
wow so beautiful I like it

You are a very talented young woman BUT it would have been helpful to know exactly what materials you are using. For instance, are you blending with Baby Wipes or cotton swabs, etc.
+Barbara Rademacher Hello, Barbara, thanks for that nice comment). About the cotton and regular cue tips, that I use. Yes, I do use them for blending, but it is simply because I cringe at chalk, it gives me shivers in a bad sense and twitches me inside out and it has been like that since school board. So if you are totally OK with a chalk feeling, I suggest you blend with just fingers, I think it's the best and most professional solution here, since cotton takes away a lot of chalk powder so it is your call if you want to use it or not. About other materials, and even what exact colors I used and How I used them - all that info is available in the earlier comment exchange since people asked those questions many times and expressed their lack of satisfaction over the fact that I left this video without any audio or visual narration. In those earlier comment exchange I also explain the reason for that. Good luck with your Art voyage!)
I don't have black paper but do you recon I can just use the pastels to create the black background? Loved your art btw
Sure thing you can:-)
beautiful 🌃🌌
wonderful work...what do you use to blend..is it cottonwool
+Denise Shaw Sorry, to took me a while to answer, you are right, it's cotton I am using.
fantastic .. thanks alot ..
wonderful! love your channel, realy beautiful and i subscribed :)
I'm a beginner wroth pastels besides classes what do you recommend me to do to get started. I'm HORRIBLE at drawling though I like it lol
Hey, Ali) You can start with simple sketches. Try not to get too stuck in details in drawings and get frustrated about them, you can look at the whole picture with a panoramic glance, not just at one certain detail, please don't get discouraged by failures, just keep going, use spontaneity, you can allow art to come in your mind and switch off your rationality when you are drawing ( well not completely). Allow the inspiration to come in and call for a Muse (lols - you know the telephone number right?). To draw well you have to be a bit crazy and see things in different lights, the lights of your heart, not intellect. If you are drawing super realistic works, then choose good quality (above average) soft pastels. If you are drawing in impressionistic style - you can allow your imagination to break loose and let it all happen at one breath. Hope that helps) Best of luck)!
Thank you so much you explained that so well.

what other medias do you use besides pastel I read in one of ur other comments that its not ur strong point. soo yeah what is? and do u have any videos on that
Well, I absolutely love pastel paintings, their smoothness and wonderful shades and qualities, however, I sort of can't use pastels for too long or see someone else using them live before me, unless there is no sound of chalk in demonstration. I am not the greatest fan of oil. My true passion is watercolor, the most difficult and moody challenging media. But that's what I love about it - its moody spirit. I have some nice level works in watercolor, but I haven't displayed them as a collection, however I do offer some speed painting for beginners, because if its not a beginner level, the video with my style of using the watercolor is going to be way too long. I like that speed painting going along with music instead of narration. You can check my channel out for those watercolor videos for beginner level, I'll be posting more of them with time. And BTW I don't think I am strong in whatever field, I believe art is for our spirit and not for the demonstration of strength, because no matter what I think I am, there is always an infinite way up there for self improving and evolving our qualities with time and experience. Best)
Very nice drawing
+thundy can we use any type of quality in oil pastels..??
Thank you its fantastique very Nice
👌👍😊
Did you paint the paper black or it is a special dark paper for pastel?
hi Thundy, I'm new to your videos. This was in my recommended and I was amazed and it caught my eye! Your amazing, its Also really gorgeous. I was just wondering where you get your pastels because lately I've been into pastel art and I would love to try it. And one more question, when you use your fingers to smear the pastel what can you do to prevent it from mixing into other colors if you get what I mean. Also I've heard if you put hairspray over your finished pastel artwork it wouldn't smear, is it true? Thank you so much if you can answer and reply to this comment. You now have a new subscriber:)
Hi tk, thanks for good words:-) . Well, pastels that i use are on the other end of the world, national manufacturing, i doubt you'd be able to get them in your country, so just buy good old soft pastels to be sure for the quality of your work. Smearing is easy, i smear with cue tips, same thing goes for finger smearing, just smear the colors in, don't be hesitant and shy. Hairspray would do the fixing although i never did it myself, you know...awful chemichal smell plus allergies, but i have seen artists doing it, so go for it. Hope it helps:-) cheers!
As for smearing accidentally with the side of your palm when you are working on the drawing, just put a piece of white paper under the side of your palm to avoid ruining your previous work while you are working on your drawing.
Thundy thank you soo much! You helped me a lot! Enjoy the rest of your day 😁
Awesome
ok it looks very nice bt a question i have is you have used pastels only without mixing water or petrole?
Mfitimana Enock Guys, there's no water, liquid or petrol used in this drawing. These are semi soft pastels, an accidental drop of liquid would be a disaster on a drawing like this.
Thundy ok good but another question is that have you learn to do this or it is your talent?
Well, I never had a talent for visual arts, I still don't. It all can be developed with time and patience and diligence. But, in my opinion, most of the genius works in visual arts that I see today on youtube, come from aged artists. I think it's the matter of life experience, I've noticed that the more aged the artist is, the more experienced is his or her way of self expression (there are exceptions though like everywhere else), the more recognizable his or her artistic "handwriting" is. So for me visual art came very late in life. I still doubt it came to me, but I believe It's important to keep going on searching for yourself in art, to keep growing, it's not about talent, it's self searching and also it's about a higher desire and passion, that artist has towards beauty, mystery and the beyond. So it's that desire that has to move and motivate the artist and NOT the urge of competition and success. The sphere of visual art belongs to the Beyond, which is void of the materialistic approach. As I see it, only then the artists' works shine with glory and bring happiness to other people.
te quedo de bien!!!!!
Nice drawings
