Leftoverture and Hemispheres are tied for last (never even heard Hemispheres) and Pawn Hearts and Thick as a Brick I could listen to forever and never get sick of them, there's so much going on in both...simply timeless masterpieces.
@@nectarinedreams7208 I mainly listen to Prog, but sometimes I want to listen to something that isn't. In the early 80s I copied a friend's Leftoverture to cassette but only listened to it in the car, where I want something lighter and easy- listening. Kansas fit the bill perfectly! I do like the album, but haven't heard it since those days.
1. Pawn Hearts 2. Thick As a Brick 3. Hemispheres 4. Leftoverture *but I say that Leftoverture IS a very good album! And it has the best album cover, no question!
1. Pawn Hearts ( Theme One was used in the Friday rock show, BBC radio 1 at 10pm on friday nights, hosted by the late Tommy Vance) 2. Thick as a Brick 3. Hemispheres 4. Don't own any Kansas.
I'm with Ken 100% as far as rating goes. I have all 4 albums in my collection and they are all excellent in their own way but Pawn Hearts is an absolute masterpiece.
P.S. I'm not surprised that Ken put Pawn Hearts first as his tastes generally seem somewhat less mainstream (he often mentions Krautrock and rare European albums). Even though Van Der Graaf were very good musicians, they were not about flashy virtuosity - they were all very much in service to the mood and the arrangement.
That last minute and a half of The Wall makes it such a paramount gargantuan god album for me. If The Wall wasn't on it then yes Rush is my favorite band and Thick as a Brick is fantastic too
Depends on your taste in prog. Personally VDGG are the very definition of prog and Pawn Hearts is probably their greatest work. Ken is right about the commercial veneer when it comes to Kansas, Rush in the 70's were hampered by Geddy's overly high pitched vocals which he toned down throughout 80's thankfully and where they produced their best music imo and my favourite Jethro Tull is prior to Thick as a Brick.
#1 Thick As A Brick #2 Pawn Hearts #3 Leftoverture #4 Hemispheres Just to be clear, I love all of these albums and the rankings are certainly not meant as a knock on any of them.
Went back to Pete’s rankings of RUSH/ KANSAS/ he actually did them back to back days. 4 years ago. - first RUSH then KANSAS- I definitely know my 3 &4. It’s my top 2. Playing them over & over all day. lol 👍💯
I love these band shoot-outs. They're more interesting than talking about one band. And who would have put Van Der Graaf Generator up against Rush? Excellent that you did that! I'm going to have to listen to some more Rush. We haven't clicked yet, but a million SoT gurus can't be wrong.
I love jazz rock, and I'm a huge prog fan, but I've never been able to get into the North American prog bands. They seem to lack the psychedelia and surrealism that I love so much about the British bands. I also don't really like hard rock, AOR or even much classic rock so bands like Rush and Kansas just don't do it for me at all. That said, I would never try to deny their prog credentials. Rush and Kansas are most definitely prog, at least on these two albums here. So, for me, as much as I love Thick as a Brick, and it truly is a masterpiece, Pawn Hearts has to take the cake for me. It's totally spellbinding. A fearless record. Peter Hammill is a genius. Godbluff is my favourite but Pawn Hearts is very close. Then I'd probably go with Rush in third and Kansas fourth.
Van DeGraaf and Tull definitely tied for first! Leftoverture to me is more of an AoR album.. never could get into Hemispheres too much.. Give me By-Tor or the Necromancer!
Looking forward to the episode but the personal winner by quite a wide margin is Thick As A Brick. Likely biased as spent months reading and re-reading the “newspaper” with the album. Then seeing the band live on the tour for this album and hearing it performed in its entirety sealed the deal. A continued favorite since buying it on release. If awards are given for silver and bronze sine Tull takes the gold, those would go to Rush and Kansas, respectively. A thanks in advance to those appearing in this episode.

My favorite is Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull because it was parodied on The Simpsons by the character Martin Prince. Do any of you remember that? How about you, Pete Pardo?
Excellent show and a great in depth look into four classic albums from these iconic bands 1. Hemispheres 2. Thick As A Brick 3. Leftoverture 4. Pawn Hearts
I have them all... Thick As A Brick....No contest; that album is my life. As far as there being a CD release with just one track for Thick As A Brick.....there is one late 1980s Australasian CD release, catalogue number CDCHM 321003, with no parts 1 & 2, and just the one track....I think it maybe the only example.
Note to Pete: For future reference, if you want to find the best overall by rankings, then just add up the 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s and the album with the LOWEST overall score is then the "best" using that measure - becomes quite straightforward 🙂

Leftoverture One and two are hard, I love both immensely but I'll pick the naked guy today 😀 Pawn Hearts is also great, never had a problem with the voice, love how PH uses it to color the songs. Kansas is not one of my fav prog bands but I do really like Leftoverture and it was cool that a couple of the panelists brought up Cheyenne's Anthem, always loved that one.
1. Pawn Hearts 2. Hemispheres 3. Thick As A Brick 4. Kansas (I wouldn’t even really rate this album as it’s never been an album or band I’ve really ever liked).

It's good but honestly man I think the albums after and preceding it are much better. Now remember this is definitely just my opinion loads love Pawn Hearts but ehh I think you are better off with Godbluff, Still Life and World Record.
Thick as a Brick is my #1. Funny that Hemispheres is exactly the kind of thing that Tull is satirizing. Though La Villa Strangiato is a great track, the rest of the album is so-so. If I'm not mistaken, Thick as a Brick is one of Geddy Lee's favorite albums. Haven't heard the other two.
I've never heard Pawn Hearts so I can't rank it. 3. Leftoverture - great album but I like their debut and Songs For America better. And damn my bad taste, but I dig boo-gie (with Popoff pronunciation) rock. 2. Thick As A Brick - I did not get into this at first. It took many years but now it's probably a top 5 Tull album for me. I listened to it a few times on cross country flights a few years ago and it really came alive for me. 1. Hemispheres - I believe this was the 2nd Rush album I ever heard, after Moving Pictures, and I've loved it ever since. Side 2 is a perfect Rush side for me. All three songs are probably in my Rush top 10. As an 11/12 year old, The Trees really got my imagination going, especially because my grandmother had weirdly twisted maple trees in her yard that had grown that way due to ice storms many years prior. So it was easy to picture the trees trying to twist and turn and fight for sunlight.
Great show! Cool to see the wide range of opinions. 1. Tull - Brillant packaging and a great prog record. 2. Rush - Not my favorite Rush, though I appreciate what's going on. 3. Kansas - Masque is a huge favorite. Leftoverture is a little too slick, though it has some really great songs. The Wall! 4. Van der Graaf Generator - I'm not fully on board yet, but gradually warming up to Hamill and this band.
Favourite sophomores is vastly genre-dependent, but for metal, I propose Judas Priests' "Sad Wings of Destiny". It's still a masterpiece, even if you don't like kaftans.
1. Hemispheres- by far my favorite. Perfect album. Circumstances might be the less great song but it is still very good. 2. Thick as a brick- Very fun and great music 3. Leftoverture- Great but some not as great songs. The highs are very good. 4. Pawn hearts- I have never liked them.
1. Pawn Hearts 2. Hemispheres 3. Thick as a Brick 4. Leftoverture but the top 3 are very close. VdGG are very much a marmite band - few will have it second or third.
I dunno. I listen to prog for its weirdness. The whole point of prog is to be off the beaten path. For me, Walsh is a bit sickly sweet. There's no edge to Kansas. They're too well-behaved and pleasant. Just not what I look for in prog. Anderson, Hammill, Geddy, all prog legends.
Although I own all of these, I took Leftoverture out of my regular rotation after a few listens. I found it jarring and noisy. I didn't know it was widely considered in the class of the other three.
where the heck is everybody? Of course we know George and Chad are Rush out of the box so it's a bit of an unfair comparo. No one is here to defend VDG like Chuck and Luis. And ken has never considered Kansas prog - he called them violin hillbillies. I was super excited to see it, but with only 5 panel members and something odd like VDG in there it turns out to be a bit predictable but Iwatched it all!!!! I learn a lot listening to everyone. Was really hoping to hear George call Peter Hamill an asshat. Mine: 1) TAAB 2) Leftoverture 3) Pawn Hearts 4) Hemispheres
"Was really hoping to hear George call Peter Hamill an asshat." 😂 I don't think I will ever again be able to listen to a VdGG album without cracking up hysterically... and it's all due to George's comments about Peter/VdGG on what is probably the most infamous episode of ItPS. It's been two years or so since that episode aired? I am STILL cracking up over that! Can't stop! I agree - once we saw the panelists for this episode, the outcome was easy to predict; not what would take the top spot, as much as what would be at the bottom; Chuck probably would've had Pawn Hearts as his 1st or 2nd pick. Granted, I have Pawn Hearts in 4th place, except I genuinely love the album - loved it upon first listen.
I love all of these albums but this was an easy ranking: 1. Hemispheres (my fave band, my fave album by them and my 3rd fave album of all-time), Thick as a Brick (also a top 10 record of all-time for me, Leftoverture and Pawn Hearts
Great show. Pawn Hearts is last. Not a Vander Graf fan. Leftoverture third,Thick As A Brick second, and Hemispheres first. Rush is my second favorite band of all time. Hemispheres is my second favorite album.
Now Rush is my favorite band. But... I have to say this: The fact Leftoverture has The Wall on it slays everything else. 1 Leftoverture 2 Thick As a Brick (I love Rush but this is a masterpiece more so I think) 3 Hemispheres 4 Pawn Hearts (I love VDGG, I do, but this was never a favorite of mine. I pick plenty of the other 70s and 69 material above it.)
I’m with George on VDGG. I bought Pawn Hearts and hated it so I sold it. About 10 years later I thought I’d give them another try so I rebought Pawn Hearts and also bought Still Life and Godbluff. I really tried to like them but found I still just couldn’t stand the vocals so I sold them all. 4. Pawn Hearts 3. Hemispheres 2. Leftoverture 1. Thick as a Brick

We listed Luis’ picks at the end.
1. Hemispheres
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Leftoverture
4. Pawn Hearts
Was very easy for me as well
Maybe its odd, but I like The Least We Can Do and H to He a lot more than Pawn Hearts
You and me Colton are cut from the same cloth buddy. I concur ten fold 100%
I love all of these albums but this was an easy ranking: 1. Hemispheres (my fave band, my fave album by them and my 3rd fave album of all-time), Thick as a Brick (also a top 10 record of all-time for me, Leftoverture and Pawn Hearts
I agree with ken 100 % with kansas
Great show. Pawn Hearts is last. Not a Vander Graf fan. Leftoverture third,Thick As A Brick second, and Hemispheres first. Rush is my second favorite band of all time. Hemispheres is my second favorite album.
Man-Erg
The best track on any of these albums.
Now Rush is my favorite band. But... I have to say this: The fact Leftoverture has The Wall on it slays everything else.
1 Leftoverture
2 Thick As a Brick (I love Rush but this is a masterpiece more so I think)
3 Hemispheres
4 Pawn Hearts (I love VDGG, I do, but this was never a favorite of mine. I pick plenty of the other 70s and 69 material above it.)
For me, Rush #1, Tull #2, and indifferent to VDGG and Kansas. I own Pawn Hearts but haven't fallen in love with it. Don't own Leftoverture.
1) Leftoverture
2) Thick as a Brick
3) Hemispheres
4) Pawn Hearts
4. Pawn Hearts.
3. Leftoverture
2. Thick As a Brick.
1. Hemispheres.
4. Pawn Hearts
3. Hemispheres
2. Leftoverture
1. Thick as a Brick
I love Prog but cannot get past Geddy's voice. They could have been the best prog band of all time with a vocalist.
