Dearest Vlad, you are a lovely human being. As a British gay man who is now nearly 60, I have seen so many changes in my lifetime. In the 1980’s when I accepted my sexuality, life was hard, since then I am able to live a much freer life, where I am blessed with a society that seems happy to accept me, and my lovely partner (now husband). We met in 1989, we spent many years keeping our love a secret. The situation in Russia is a reminder that the freedom and acceptance of all the wonderful variety of life hangs by a tenuous thread.

Hi guys! A student from a Russian law university is here.
I think it's important to note one important thing. The new anti-LGBT law (more precisely, the Supreme Court decision, which actually has the force of law) has one very important feature: this law is very vague.
Because it does not give clear definitions of what LGBT activities are now extremism, what LGBT symbols are extremism and what symbols classify as LGBT, what statements can be regarded as support for LGBT people, what people can be considered members or supporters of a non-existent “international LGBT movement", does not even give the concept of what LGBT is and what can be attributed to it.
And this is the worst thing about that law - you don’t know clearly whether your actions and statements violate the law or not. Even if you are an ordinary person who is definitely not LGBT, you can still end up in prison if the police classify your actions or statements as supporting of LGBT.
No one can be in 100% safe.

You can use the LGBTQ label as further ammunition to make the label stick. But a pogrom aimed solely at LGBTQ folk - this would not be tolerated. Thanks Vlad. Ah yes. Putin reached the chapter in the KGB/Nazi playbook titled: "How to find or create some internal enemies to foster the permanent war psychosis and dehumanisation of opponents." It's one of his favourite chapters. He drools even more than usual when he re-reads it. A few years ago (2015 I think), the excellent British broadcaster Reggie Yates did a mini BBC series called 'Extreme Russia'. One episode was titled 'Gay and Under Attack' - it included a very personable young man who was openly gay. Frankly, I was concerned about that Russian's safety and that was 8 years ago.

Well, the Nazis at least didn't create internal enemies out of nowhere, they really sincerely believed those were their enemies, who were secretly behind everything, that wasn't ging according to the plans of the Nazis. They didn't cynically make something up to manipulate people, they just really believed those things to be true. People often like to debate who is more evil, the Nazis or the Soviets, I personally believe t was the Nazis, but the Nazis were certainly more insane, because the Soviets lied, but the things the Nazis were saying, that would have been lies if said by the Soviets were honest statements of believe by the Nazis.

To which the majority of people agree AFAIAC, however there is a lot of motte and bailey gaslighting about LGBTQXYZ activism.Do whatever you want within the law wherever you want and if there are overtly discriminatory laws making your life difficult then most people will support your objections. Unfortunately gay/trans activism has been taken over by an extreme ideology which brooks no discussion of it's beliefs or tolerates no public disagreement. This would be fine if it's proponents weren't placing demands on the rest of us to deny our own perceptions or understandings and tries to force us to accede to policies which negatively affect us and our children. I am sure that Putin understands that this is an issue that he can use to gain traction with a Western audience. In fact it's exactly the kind of issue Tucker Carlson will raise in attempts to demonstrate that Putin is just trying to defend Russia.

Umberto Eco: A Practical List for Identifying Fascists
    Evolve
Fascism is present even in the most progressive democracies; some points for identifying its component parts.
The word “Fascist” is used with great ease and lightness in our own time. It’s applied as a kind of “cult insult.” Someone or something is Fascist when trying to impose arbitrary laws or rules on others. In recent history, Fascism was a mystical ideology and political movement, one founded by Benito Mussolini in Italy during the period between the two world wars. By extension, the word has been used to refer to Nazism and other totalitarian movements. What do contemporary “Fascisms” have in common with the historical ones?
The question was taken up by the recently deceased Italian novelist and semiotician, Umberto Eco, who plunged into the word “Fascist” to clarify some of its implications. Eco distinguished this, for example, from Hitler’s Nazism, although he conceded that the “fascist game can be played in many ways, and the name of the game doesn’t change.”
In an essay published in the New York Review of Books, Eco distilled the 14 typical elements of “Ur-Fascism or Eternal Fascism,” while warning that, “These features cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.”
The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense, Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”
The cult of action for action’s sale. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture, the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”
Appeal to social frustration. “[…] one of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.
The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.”
The enemy is both weak and strong. “[…] the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”
Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”
Everybody is educated to become a hero. “in Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”
Machismo and Weaponry. “This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur-Fascist hero tends to play with weapons-doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.”
Selective Populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.
Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

I thought in Russia there is a strong conflation of gay sex with rape coming from prison culture. Which gives prejudices versus that group, not the way you would see from a conservative Christian Poles, but also quite strong and demeaning. I have a gay friend who went on a gay pride/lgbt march a couple years back in London. He said not only were there men there wearing nothing but revealing women's underwear but there was also a guy dressed up as a baby holding a placard that said something pretty grotesque. He said he left in short order and won't go on another because those sorts of people are not good examples of normal gay people.
My niece is 17 and is starting to realise now she is straight, a couple years ago she was thinking about having a "sex change" operation because she wanted to be a boy. There was a "councillor", if you like, at her school who was encouraging these thoughts and this course of action. Her parents have found things very difficult.
Tolerance of homosexuality is fine, but there is also degeneracy and perversion. Putin's play here will appeal to a great many people in the west who feel that they are having this stuff shoved down their throats 24/7, particularly to christian conservatives in NA...
