We're back with another epic bass lesson? What does epic mean? LONG. This sweet slap bass tune from Rage Against The Machine is full of cool slap fills, so I couldn't resist doing a full detail song lesson so you can hear every little fill slowed down.
First things first, this lesson will start with a few playalongs for the main slap bass riff of this tune, starting slow and building up to full speed.
For all the slap fills, I chose to omit playalongs to try to keep the video under an hour. :) I'll also run you through the fingerstyle sections of the tune in the same way.
Hope you guys enjoy, now get out there and rage against the machine!

Yeah I’m just gonna “ignore” the muted notes I’m sure the non rage listeners at school won’t notice
Hi Josh, awesome tutorial, I can tell you watched live performances and listened closely to the song because you might be the only guy on youtube that play the "pop", the hammer-on and the ghost notes in the right way.
I prefer this style of run through, explaining various sections rather than repeating the same riff over and over. Thanks!
digging this. Was struggling with a couple of the fills. this'll sort it 😊
Brilliant, thanks Josh, I can now play this correctly. Made my day.
Wow! Great vid. 3 hours in just listening and practicing and I got this down due to your fantastic breakdown. I've just got back into bass after 15 years not playing. Never tried slap bass and so wanted to learn. This was great fun to start with. Thanks so much!
you are maybe the best bassist I've seen on RUclips giving lessons. You did a PDF of the song with notes! You helped me incredibly with your video! Keep going!
Thanks Angelos!
This is my first slap bass song to attempt. Great lesson you're good at this. Thanks much.
Thanks Brett, glad to help. If I can give a little unsolicited advice - this song is way too hard for a first slap tune. At least it would have been way too hard for me when I first started slapping. I would stick with something more 8th note-y, just focusing on slaps and pops, no ghost notes or hammerons or anything to get the basics happening. If this advice doesn't sound appropriate for you personally, please ignore me and keep rocking!
Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure if this song was hard or I was just really bad. :-) Any ideas for a super beginner like myself for a first song slap bass?
Honestly no, most popular tunes are too hard for starting. I would just practice some octave thump-pops and make up your own simple stuff that you can handle.
This has been really useful, thank you! This is my first attempt at slap bass and I now have a blister on my index finger from popping but I've got it!
Yess! Finally i can play it! Thanks bro for your tutorial really helped me understand it better 😬
Nice!
Nice Cirrus! I had one exactly like that for years, and then for some reason, I sold it.
Thanks ! greetings from México !
Great tutorial man, but after the pop on the F (3rd fret D string) it's a D but achieved by hammering off the D string (3^0) and not by slapping the D on the 5th fret of the A string. That's how Timmy C (bassist from RATM) does it at least.
Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated!
amazing, the first youtuber i have found to play this line correctly :)
Check Miki Santamaría
Great lesson. Great song! Thank you very much!
You got it, thanks for watching!
Thanks for the lesson helped me a lot, do remember if you want to play this along with the album it is tuned with 450hz
Now this I can play , thanks Josh.
Those muted notes are a pain!
3:50 to 4:05 the first bit i get it but then is sounds like it s coming back in a way i cannot replicate, i ve tried it alloot
Thomas Flaherty I know its been two years but for anyone else, I’d recommend learning both ways to slap, thumb pointing down and thumb pointing up. In this case, use thumb down and hold your thumb against the e string when doing dead notes so you don’t have to worry as much on your left hand’s muting abilities. At least that’s how I play slap
Voy a imtentar aprenderlo, alto capo
Hot can I mute the E string while slapping on the A or lower strings? Thanks ! Very good tutorial !
Great, well explained ,easy to understand. I enjoyed watching that tutorial. I will certainly improve my play. Thanks for the good work.
Thanks Gaetan!
Dude after playing this 1 hour next two days couldnt so slap because my index finger hurted
Yep, takes a lot of time and blisters to build up slap calluses!
its good to know its normal. This is my first slap song :/ Thanks for replying :D
*hurted*
Same for me
Sadly I can't play slap at all anymore. I was in a car accident and have a jammed wrist.
@@physicalandtemporarypain6037 I did
@@physicalandtemporarypain6037 Look, there's no need to be an asshole just b/c someone else was an asshole to you
@@BrutalNewby ok you are a good man
This is so good! And the sheet music is crazy helpful.
And on top of this great video: banana for scale 👍🏼
On the main riff I find it easier to do a pull of on the third string because I can't make the hammer on clear enough. I only do it for the seventh note of the main riff the rest is fine. Does that change much because it's literally the same note...
i play it the same :)
Ha! I thought for the longest that the tattoo on your forearm was a feather. It only JUST hit that it’s Andy Warhol’s banana from the Velvet Underground & Nico!
Thanks for the tutorial man!
Great vid
I was always told to keep your finger parallel from the string you're slapping on. What are the advantages to the way you're doing it?
Do you mean "keep your thumb parallel"? If so, I slap slightly above parallel for better accuracy (easier to hit with a diagonal than two parallel lines) and better double thumbing (get a little bit more meat on the upstroke).
Thanks
what do you call that switch in the back to get to drop d again pls?
Slap like now! Epico
hello! I'll be direct, when I adjust the first string to D it gets really sloppy and its almost impossible to play it, what can I do?
MK_ 29 You could use higher gauge strings
I must have a weird hand, because the meat of my palm interferes with the thumb slap unless I point my thumb down. Also playing a five string, skipping the E string.
Do you film a bunch of these in one day and edit them later or do you always wear the same shirt?
How did you achieve that amazing, clean sound?
Hey, thank you! In terms of gear/recording, it's just my bass (sounds like I rolled to the neck pickup at least partially) going through a little compression/EQ, nothing fancy. I think most of sounding "clean" is just about being precise with slap technique and muting.
Practice
What would you consider as a beginner song for slap?
+SupraNovaa Depends on if you're a beginner bassist or a more experienced player just new to slap. Either way, beginner slap songs are hard to find. What I did to learn slap was to make up my own bass lines, experimenting with different rhythms and combinations of slaps and pops.
+SupraNovaa , try Thank you for letting me be Myself , by Larry Graham.
Mark S B. Alright, will do! Thank you.
I dont know if my bass is setup correctly I just cant slap with my thumb, the only sound im getting is the string hitting the 20th fret
This classic curriculum, you put your fist in em, not eccentric unlike the rest of em...dude, now I wanna learn to play bass
what bass is he using? that thing looks cool af
Hi Josh, what program do you use to create these amazing and free pdf music sheets?
+Alexander Gasanov Hey Alexander, I've been using Sibelius for all my music writing needs for years and I like it a lot. There are a lot of free options out there these days like Noteflight which are pretty decent too.
Want to say the tabs while your playing them, would help.
What Bass is he using?
great work!! which is the bpm of this song?thanks
In the interest of "teach a man to fish" - grab your metronome, use the "tap tempo" function, tap along with the song, and voila! That's the tempo of the song.
@@joshfossgreen yoooooooooooo. Mindblown
So it turns out I've been playing this completely wrong for the past 25 years.
Pretty clean technique with the slapping, I had to squint watching the slap that Anna Sentina was dishing out with this song.
chris williams yeah Anna's technique is a little bit different from most
What is the name of the song you sampled at 3:00 ??

just what I was looking for. and coming from a vegan teacher !! keep doing this !! be vegan and play the bass !!!
:)
Why is the vegan part so fucking important about a bass tutorial of all things.
darkySp because real man are kind to animals and slap that bass with style like him. Go Vegan and be kind to all things , hugs
i think josh is right with the pop of C and D with hammering. i have the hal leonard songbook and sadly they are full of bullshit too often...josh rules.
Cuz Take the Power Back at 2:09. :-P
You Vegan? LOOOOL. Kidding. Me too. Tbh. I have never.. ever learned a slap song. I dont know how I feel about learning this at the same time. I sense so much KoRn in this particular song.
You should check Mudvayne out. Ryan is beast. Such inspiration also.
EDIT: I have been practicing some slap.
yo sorry to bother you but, is there is a possible chance you can see me play blues guitar? I need criticism and actual musical opinions thanks.
All I wanna know is the fret and finger positioning

Are u vegan?

"Whats so good about being vegan"? - Fulfilling our moral obligation to the other animals we share this planet with. It's the responsible, compassionate choice that anybody can make which reduces animal suffering, is better for the environment, and a lot of research seems to indicate that it's better for your health. We don't NEED to participate in the use and abuse of animals, so why not attempt to avoid it as far as possible and practicable? Basically....if you can live a happy and healthy life without hurting animals, then why wouldn't you?
Discussing the pros and cons of being vegan...
On a video about slap bass?!?!
. They leave more animals for me to eat!!
Star Lord?
Great lesson thank you for taking the time
btw loose the Vegan shirt no one cares if you eat bacon or sea moss ;)
You're welcome and I will continue to wear whatever the hell I want. :)
Im gonna put tape over the screen so I dont have to see the douchey shirt....As long as it doesnt stop me from seeing the lessons. :) You Rock! Love the shredder video

Don't like his shirt #thebutsmarn
the only cover i saw that slaps the muted notes as they should be slapped, looks like a simple riff, but it's not actually.
