PizzaFLIX Presents CLASSIC MOVIE MONDAY
Director: William C. McGann
Screenplay: Roland Pertwee
Stars: Isobel Elsom, Ivor Barnard, Margot Grahame, D.A. Clarke-Smith
In this crime melodrama foreshadowing "Mildred Pierce" and “Stella Dallas,” a single mother is prepared to sacrifice everything for her two daughters' high-society education.
TRIVIA: "Illegal" was made under the British quota rule at the Warner Brothers Teddington Film Studios. The facility began in the early 20th century when the owner of Weir House, Teddington, allowed filmmakers to use his greenhouse. It was greatly expanded by E. G. Norman and Henry Edwards and renamed Teddington Film Studios Limited. After only one production, the studio was acquired by Warner Brothers-First National.
Movies this good ought to be illegal.😁
Hi Catfish 🍕Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce be with you 🍕
The only problem i have with this, is it feels British.
Me being the good American and Anglophobe that I happen to be.
I hate all things British.
Such a queer language of which they speak, as it is almost non-understandable.
@@Johnnycdrums 🍕back in the early '80s I had a Rockabilly band in NYC. We had 2 Johnnie in the band, so we called them Johnny Bass and Johnny Drums. May the Sauce be with them. 🍕
@@JohnnycdrumsMore understandable than the writing in the comment.
Thank you!
Keep the Pre-Code movies coming!
Yes!!❤
There was no 'code' for UK films.
Thanks for uploading and sharing this old movie.
Most of the American studios had British subsidiaries, and that's where this one came from, thus the rare joint WB/First National branding. Made with a full British cast and crew.
What a gem! I only know Isobel Elsom from mother roles like in "You Were Never Lovelier" - such a great Pre-code find, thank you Pizza Flix!!!
From illegal gambling to arsonist, she came a long way...surprised the English let this one out. Thanks, love the automobiles ❤
You can do anything if you put your mind to it.
British cinema at this time didn’t have the same strict censorship of Hollywood , you’d be surprised how many good gritty films came out of Britain during these years , ….It’s British , not English BTW
Thanks! This was interesting, as I love Barbara Stanwyck in Stella Dallas. Oddly enough, this one took me back to remembering when my great-grandparents were alive!
Wow! A very good British film from the early 1930s! This was made during a period of time when the British government used parliamentary legislation to help the British film to grow, prosper, and be self-sustaining, beginning in the late 1920s. 🇬🇧🎬🎥🎞️📽️ 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
This movie was Delightful ... Thanks so much for sharing it with Us .
Terrific movie. Thanks for the premier showing here on YT.
Thank you for getting this awesome old classic, I’ve not seen so excited ! God Bless you and your family, Canada 🇨🇦 P.E.I 😊
Oh wow. Isobel Elsom when she was young-ish in British films. Thank you much!
Thank you PizzaFlix.
Surprisingly good print. A bit melodramatic, but it has to be in order to move fast (~72 minutes).
Ivor Barnard was an excellent actor. He began on the stage at the prestigious Birmingham Rep Theatre.
Ivor Barnard mostly played supporting character roles in movies. E.g., he was the clerk to Francis Sullivan's attorney role in "Great Expectations" (with John Mills). And among many other character roles he has a short but gripping appearance as the bookseller in a fabulous noir-like fable entitled "The Queen of Spades." I strongly recommend it to you.
Thank you again, PizzaFlix!
`
Oh my gosh! This is amazing!
I wasn't familiar with any of the cast, or the movie itself. But I was pleasantly surprised! It's a great story and it held my attention.
And this is a good copy, not too low-res and worn. Love it!
Ivor Barnard amongst the more familiar. Often played oddballs...
Ivor Barnard was best known to me from the Bogart film Beat The Devil
I only knew Isobel Elsom as a society dowager in her many films. ❤
Omg thank you so much for uploading this movie! I've been looking for it for years! I taped it off TCM back when I was in college. It was a part of their Teddington Studios marathon!
PF, long time no check in. And this is a dosey! You've done it again, dug deep for this one and found a gem. I'll finish tomorrow or sometime on the weekend. Hope you're well.
Back in the 1930-1960 they knew how to make great movies! In 2024 all the movies are unwatchable!😂
I agree…I struggle to pay attention to many current productions…unless it’s yt reels-.-
Thank you for posting this first-rate film!
This is cool thank you 😊
Isobel Elsom ❤️❤️❤️😍 now youre talking my language! Thanks PizzaFlix! Happy Monday all, Roll that film 🎬🎥🥂🧓
This is one of the best, Mr Pizza Flix! Thank you!
Abbe 🍕 📽️ 🎞️
In Britain, Scotland and Ireland the law was always 11:00pm no more liquor served. When I was visiting in 1988, some friends took me to a cool biker bar dug into an old quarry somewhere south of London. They told me that this law was based on the needs of farmers. No one could drink beyond 11:00pm to ensure that the help would be up and sober in the morning. But they enforced it on everyone and as far as I know, it's still in force.
It is no longer in force. Open all hours has not saved hundreds of pubs closeing down.
I'm in the US and I had to keep reminding myself that there was no prohibition in the UK, lol. "Illegal" is simply referring to after hours alcohol sales, and later, gambling.
Another to watch, thank you! Think it was uploaded once before but missed it - unless it was just the trailer...
Wonderful "quota quickie"! Excellent print, great find!
after 12 years and 3k videos, I'm digging deep.
@@PizzaFLIX And it is greatly appreciated!
@@Menschenfreund535 🍕I’m Thrilled there’s an audience for these obscure films 🍕
@@PizzaFLIX I'm thrilled to find films like this! Thanks so much!

One hundredth like! Cheers! 🌹😘
Well told story.
I missed this last Monday. I will do a double feature tonight with buttered popcorn and beer!
Part II: The arson trial.
PizzaFlix you never disappoint! My hat is off to you for bringing us so many excellent movies! Thank you!
Looks good!
At a mere 65 years of age, I can only imagine certain things about the film-noire era........ imagine the odors of those times. There's something not too offensive about the smell of an old cellar...... my great grandmother lived in Washington, D.C. and had tons of mint condition housewares, furniture, etc. from the 30's and 40's, much of which carried the vintage fragrances with them. Also, thank you for the tolerable resolution. No idea how and where the material is obtained but it seems there's been tons of data compression along the way over years; for speed of upload or reducing file sizes. Lucky to even see this great stuff so no complaints :)
@oneworld9071
I've commented several times in various movies between the 20-40's that everything must have stunk with all the smoking they were seemingly required to do during filming at least.
But I do agree about the other smells. I revisited my grandmother's home that my rotten mom literally gave away for 38k and the garage and hall closet alone literally threw me back to when I was a little girl.
My grandparents would be the same if not for having been destroyed by their raging alcoholic molester son and his two dogs.
It’s odd that most of the reviewers on IMDB don’t seem to understand that “illegal” refers to drinking after hours, and gambling. There were many (like the creepy stepfather) who assumed prostitution was going on.
Thanks for the upload. Closing time here is 2am, with last call at 1:30am, but it varies widely by state, with Nevada not having any restrictions.
The names weren't familiar to me, but I see according to IMDB that many have very good film credits. Was Margot Grahame known at all as a vocalist? I can find nothing relative to her singing, although here she has three songs (I also see nothing about her singing voice being dubbed, so I assume it's all her).
I’m thrilled that some many viewers gave it a chance considering it doesn’t sport any recognizable names 🍕
I recognize one of the women at bottom.of the stairs from Scrooge as his housekeeper or 1 that was pawning his stuff.
Wondering if writer Roland Pertwee is a relative of Dr Who's John Pertwee?
Hi Evan 🍕Roland is John Pertwee’s Father 🍕good catch 🍕
Soo nice
thanks
Thank you!
Roll dem bones but beware they're loaded !!
Orig. released: Feb. 3rd, 1950 (London)....
Back in the day.
They were just like us, but less worse, I think.
great movie but nowadays I would not want a male neighbor hanging around my girls. ack the good old days when doctors made house calls. things sure have changed
it was the stepdad that ended up being the perve
♥️
The commissioner-doorman dressed as a scarecrow all night is a complete indignity. 😂
Cool. Obviously, Alfred Hitchcock began his film career in the 1920’s.
@12:10 " a few birds" = young girls - probably 17-23 yrs old, I mean YOUNG
19:17 beautiful boy.
Original spec.
Pre emissions japanese
Fairlady roadsters had performance and mpg specs.
Most cars today can't touch.
But emissions,
then current bumper laws. Killed performance.
It would be nice if nissan made a modern version.
As long as they didn't spoil it.
As the mx-5 has become a joke.
Nissan has the history,
and capacity to bring back the sporty,
reliable,
2 door convertible.
That is affordable,
reliable,
fun to drive,
and with a for a few dollars more..
Competitive.
For gods sake no wood,
real or fake!
No chrome plastic.
Build quality,
attention to detail,
and serviceability matter.
Such a car could put nissan back on the map as a creative design house.
In my opinion.
🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
This is a FILTHY movie! Cue the London fog (smog).🥳
This film is almost too sordid and twisted to bear. It is as if there can be no redemption in this life, let alone the next.
So who owns the rights to the film? Seems some on you tube can avoid strikes and others cannot.
Everything that's on this channel is in the public domain. The public owns the rights to this movie now.
@@wareforcoin5780
And they have cut the living heart out of them or are just showing snippets of some great movies in the "Public Domain". Find them out of the RUclips public domain.
I adore Film Noir 1920s-60s Black and White Movies..... but.......
#ShirleyTempleChildActorsAbuse. Time stamp 3:30-3:45
8:13...watch his thumb and hands always in her armpit area- Why?
Did you now
Not much going on in this movie, the dialogue was a bit flat, really monotonous writing with a strange pace, everything happened too rushed, no character development, the editing was pretty good though. Overall this one was a snoozefest.
IDK how many 🍕 you had to give but can't wait to watch it now thanks @PizzaFlix
Great Flick! Thank you!
So Wonderful! Thank you for the upload so very much. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Please continue the good work!!
Thank you, Mr. Pizza Flix, for posting this and so many other AMAZING titles!
I love the cliffhanger serials the BEST!
You rock and roll, Pizzaman!
That film sure went in a few directions.
The GRUESOME subtext hinted at at the start and end of the film was SURPRISING for a film at that time.
For a movie that was made in a mad rush, this film holds up beautifully.
The ending puzzles me
So much about this film leaves me with questions
No one on any of the big websites has done even an accurate job of loosely describing this film, let alone diving deep into its background or meaning.
Someone out there, I call upon you to take up the mantle of discovering the hidden gems about this film that all its viewers would love to know.
One other thing stands out: they sure do not make them like they used to…
Someone ought to remedy that fact.
I will pray for America.
Please pray for me.
God Bless you.
Interesting little flick, a little extra sauce for Merry Ol' England -
Recognize some players, too.
Thanks Pizza Flix!

Amazing movie!
When I saw the castle prison, what?!
if these people could see the state of the country today it would be like landing on another planet
I imagine if the people of 1840 could have seen the state of the country in 1932, they would have thought the same thing
Dude please stop..We can see and hear..
ISOBEL!!!
Ronald Pertwee, one of the writers, was the father of Jon Pertwee, best known for being the third Doctor Who
Thank you ! !
This movie makes a great argument:
For thinking twice about who you admire,
support,
or vote for,
and why.
Just my opinion.
Well that was uncalled for .
