I'm really impressed by Ralph's historical acumen and how he merges that with functionality to create fountain pens that reflect how we write today. Fascinating conversation.
Sharp and talented guy! Much respect, and I wish him success
Thank you Ralph. Nice to see you doing well and working on things you love doing.
I think he was one of the first OG weird nib persons around.
OMG RALPH! Totally squealed seeing Ralph. What a combo! A Regalia nib is definitely a grail piece for me. Gorgeous work 🥹✨
Speechless... love & appreciate all the history, knowledge, demonstration & mindfulness. This video is outstanding just as Ralph's craft & experience. Thanks for sharing with us!
Yaay!!! Kudos to Goldspot for getting Ralph, the independent stacky, flexy pioneer in the live and speaking about nibs makes for a great start to the new year! I still have his precious Sequel nib going strong 🤩, BIFL.
What an interesting, knowledegable and well spoken man about fountain pens, its History and what he is trying to recreate for our generation and future ones to enjoy after we are gone. Thank you Ralph. And Thank you Tom, I found this one of your most interesting video interviews yet.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed listening to Ralph. I totally agree with his statement that we just do not write like we used to. His passion for writing and fountain pens is inspiring.
WOW, THAT WAS AWESOME !
That is a beautiful pen. This has been one of the best videos you ever made. Ralph is an passionate fountain pen creator. Looking forward to seeing what is coming next from Regalia and Goldspot pens.
I am so glad to see Ralph! I have been following his work, he's amazing! My hope is to get one of his nibs. Preservation of the written language and the art of writing. "Tuned exotic experience!"
His explanation of what it feels like to write with a wonderful pen is the best I've ever heard.
Love this, Tom! Thanks for sharing.
I tried the Frankenpen approach with some success. Paired a vintage Pelikan gold flex nib with a modern Pelikan M 205. Pretty pleased with the result. However, it was a gamble and cost me about $200. 00 plus hours of time. I'd gladly pay a bit more for a well made, completely modern pen with a high quality, flexible steel nib if I could save the time, effort & uncertainty inherent in what I did.
Ralph is one of the best nib mechanics alive today, and a really great person.
Congrats, Ralph! This is a very impressive interview. You definitely have great knowledge on pens and a skill & philosophy to match. I am truly happy that you pursued your passion and now making your own mark in the world. So proud of you!!!
Wow! Ralph is a true artisan and genius! Thanks for sharing this incredible video with Ralph.
I would have liked to see more closeups of the nibs in development.
I may have to try one of these nibs eventually
I can understand the reasoning and actions behind designing these nibs. I love fountain pens even though I struggled with them as a lefty that prefers the Japanese fine point. I am always willing to spend a little to try out a nib, but hesitate to go overboard on a pen/nib. I have experimented with an oblique or two to try to get a fancier looking font, but still haven't found one that does it for me. I will look at these nibs and see if I can afford one to try out. They look intriguing.
what an artist! I am so impressed.
What a beautiful pen and nib. I wish I could try this nib and enjoy the feel of the flex. The pen itself is outstanding in its artistry.
Hope you get a somewhat consistent supply of pens with that wonderful nib. It will take me many months to save enough so I need one to be available. Well worth waiting for this grail pen.
Can't wait to try out a cross flex nib!
Wow, no more words needed ! I hope my purchase coming soon!
What a cool interview. So glad Ralph kept on creating those nibs. Maybe someday I can get a chance to try writing with a pen with one of his nibs.
Great video as always...All the best for 100k!
Great interview
Thanks for the information
Greetings from Mexico
This is very impressive! I am glad to see how hard work and passion has bloomed
Ralph is incredibly fascinating. I’m now very interested in fountain pens, thanks for recommending this RUclips. But quick question, are flex nibs the way to go? Are all modern nibs not flexible? I know nothing about fountain pens just wondering
Welcome welcome. Flex nibs aren't for everyone. I would suggest getting started with a standard medium or fine nib and exploring outward from there. Flex requires some training of your handwriting to properly use to its fullest capability. Modern nibs are mostly not flexible. Ralph's Crossflex nib is a rare exception, which makes it unique.
Love this, Tom! Thanks,
Really fascinating conversation.
Ralph is a legend!!!!
Great video Tom!
Dude strikes me as a Jedi. Darth Reyes 😆
Darth Reyes has a nice sound to it. He should make a nib called the Ink Saber.
Amazing pen!
So close to 100k!
Congratulations on 100k 🎉🎉🎉

Interesting conversation with a nib designer. Thanks, Tom. I visited Ralph's site, but there was nothing available, every nib marked "sold out" and I didn't see prices for items in the photos. Also, the site for the maker of the feeds he mentioned has generally expensive ebonite feeds for specific models of what seem to be all modern pens. This is incompatible with Ralph's frequent references to vintage pens, which may be more likely to need replacement nibs and/or feeds, ebonite being made from a biological substance that will inevitably deteriorate. Ralph often mentioned that he sought to make nibs that everyone could use. I suspect that the few pens they will be in exceed the budgets of ordinary mortals. Certainly, I doubt I could put them in any of my own vintage pens. Oh, well.
ebonite fees provide much better ink flow to regular plastic feeds. It is relatively replaceable but does last a pretty damn long time so I don't see an issue there.
Wonder what a flexing ti nib would be like.
My titanium glasses are super bendy
Had to go the dip pen route because the only market I have is online (no try before you buy), and there are no big pen shows within several hours of airplane flight, which makes the whole enterprise just not worth it unfortunately. If you're in the US you are very lucky, if not... well, even the Regalia website says it only sells at shows, so... yeah.
Should make one with a piston fill
When will it be possible to purchase ikkaku pen with crossflex nib and improved feed and con70?
“… some nibs were made for letter writing… some were made for accountants…” too bad that we didn’t get to hear him explain what the differences are ! Note to interviewers : please do not stop the interviewees train of thought and speaking by interrupting with a new unrelated question before letting the interviewee finish what he has to offer - - and thanks much for the good session, in any case :-)
Dang it! They're all gonna be sold out by pay day!
Thanks for sharing. Please count me in, I'm a new subscriber. Good luck.
For the cameraman can you please get more in focus by not using such a shallow depth of view, a lot of bits are blurred out when you’re focusing in.
how about making these nibs ACCESSIBLE to people! These pens are $600+ and most people cannot afford that. How about offering the nib so we can put it on a pen we already have without charging an arm and a leg for it?
Totally agree. There are quite a few independent developers who say they are all about writing but price to the elite level only.
the nibs he makes reflect the time and effort put into it. it isn't something that a factory stamps and churns out. should he not be compensated for his time, effort and expertise? if you can't afford that, then that's like everything else you can't afford sadly. save up for it like everyone else.
@@randomshitplaylist I didn't say I couldn't afford them, but you implied that nonetheless in your desire to defend the apparent hypocrisy in the statement (according to another commenter) 'Ralph often mentioned that he sought to make nibs that everyone could use' and the price - to which I concur.
@@davyj5216I was replying to Sandra’s comment not yours. I mean if you take into account he customises it and independently tests it then why not pay him what he thinks it is worth? If he wants to make it so cheap that it is accessible to everybody then that’ll either come eventually or won’t because it’s too much effort for the low cost.
He does sell nibs separately, though they are still pricey
I guess that as there was no announcement the giveaway never happened. It should have gone ahead without the subscriber condition in my opinion. For this reason I am unsubscribing.
OK, but we did announce the winner in this video here - ruclips.net/video/A6IpAc1aM7A/видео.html
