This is a superb interpretation of this song, she is brilliant at delivering with expression and smooth beautiful vocals unsurpassed in my opinion. it does'nt seem to matter what she sings.
I'm glad you are discovering how great the Carpenters are. I'm a lifelong fan. They were incredibly gifted. Richard still is, of course. Thank you for bringing them to a whole new audience.
George Benson had a monster hit with his cover of this song. This version of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" conjures up visuals of a 50s or 40s jazz club. Karen, with a group of Big Band musicians behind her, standing in the darkened club in a lone spotlight, behind one of those big round microphones, wearing a blue shimmering evening dress. Smoke from a cigarette curling up to the ceiling from an ashtray on the table. A glass tumbler with two inches of amber-colored bourbon sits within reach. And Karen’s voice wrapping around me.
I agree, it’s refreshing to see the younger generation appreciate The Carpenters, Karen was one of a kind for sure and I’m glad she’s getting the respect!!!
This is a Leon Russell song. Carpenters covered a few of his; "Superstar" and "A Song For You" were by Russell also..."This Masquerade" is essentially jazz, and indeed Richard and Karen started out as two thirds of a jazz trio in the mid-60s...
Yes, indeed, true jazz. And Karen on the drums here, I so love how she's playing especially near the end of the song. Some truly jazzy sounds on the skins. Go, Karen!
@@artistbrindle she was amazing! It's almost addictive to watch and listen to her drumming. She's so in the groove, into another world. But that's true for any great drummer, losing themselves into the instrument and becoming one with it. I love all the videos when she was still playing while singing for their concerts. The November 1970 gig was beautifully done, too, outside and on the lawn at Walter Reed. My favs are the 1974 Budokan, Japan concert and the 1972 Australian concert. Wooohooo!
Love Karen's voice, probably the best female singer there has ever been . Can you please react to I'M CAUGHT BETWEEN GOODBYE AND I LOVE YOU also A SONG FOR YOU both beautiful ballads
I love coming here because you mix it up. First, I NEVER saw that full version of her drumming on that talent show anywhere else. Second, everyone else is doing the same songs...it's like all the reactors are watching the other reactors: "Ohh, he's doing 'We Only Just Begun,' queue it up!" Same thing with Rainy Days, Superstar, Close to You, etc. Oh I love the Carpenters and have the albums, but "This Masquerade" has a moodier, jazzy vibe to it and is so soothing to listen to, and nobody does it. So thanks for that. Bob Messenger is such a talented woodwinds guy; did the flute on this one, and the sax on one I'd love you to hear. I loved the solo so much I transcribed it for a jazz-improv assignment in college; it's beautifully constructed, a perfect solo. It's on "A Song for You." This is another smoldering, evocative piece I think you'll like. Again, thanks for mixing it up!
You probably already been told this, but Karen did a duet with Ella Fitzgerald of this song. If you haven't seen it you will love it. Two of the greatest female voices ever.

You need to react to Karen’s last recording!! The song called “Now”. She did the song in one take. You’ll love it. It’s very touching, especially after all her struggles and very sad ending. Give it a listen!!”Now” is the title, from the album Voices of the Heart!!
I watched your reaction video for the first time and subscribed immediately. Why? B/c your analysis was original and spot on. I can tell you love music and know music. I’m a fan. On to the next one!
Read "Little Girl Blue" by Randy Schmidt. It is a biography written about the Carpenters without direct input from the family. It's frank, painful, and inciteful. Most of all, a reflection of, as women, how we treat ourselves based on the perception of perfection.
It may sound familiar because it was also a hit for George Benson. It was actually written by Leon Russell, although it wasn't a hit for him (it was the B side of one of his hits called Tightrope).
fantastic reactions to Carpenters.... i have a list of 4 I would think fans would love including ME. Hurting Each other, a song for you, its gonna take some time, and tryin' to get that feeling again. These all are classic Karen vocal annihilation. Hope you enjoy.
I don't care who you are or what kind of music your into but no one can deny Karen Carpenters voice she was way to talented to be ignored yes I'll admit the sound of her music is a little outdated but it's timeless and that perfect sexy tone she had that only Karen could deliver and that sadly she gave her life for her music her illness was due to her fame God bless you miss Carpenter may you rest in peace 🙏😔
The Carpenters do Justice and make a excellent cover of this song. There have been others that have sung it before the Carpenters and several after the Carpenters, the one I'm most familiar with doing a cover of this song is George benson. All the renditions I've ever heard of this song have always been smooth and sexy.. lol!

I do not know how to write directly to FortWorthFabian. Here is hoping my public comment will make his way to him. When I first heard Karen’s version of “This Masquerade,” I thought if only Richard worked with Karen to produce a full album, heck two albums, of big band / Jazz songs. Linda Ronstadt brilliantly did two or three such albums working with Nelson Riddle. Karen could have been equally brilliant. FortWorthFabian needs to check out the Carpenter’s “I Can Dream Can’t I.” Made most popular by the Andrew’s Sisters, but covered I think by Tommy Dorsey, and others. If you can find it, please do a reaction video to “I Can Dream Can’t I”.
Every time I hear Karen's angelic voice, it breaks my heart to know she died so young. Who would ever think she would die from Anorexia? The terrible and deadly eating disorder. To an Anorexic, they're never thin enough.

Great cool jazz song.
Im in tears for the pure beauty of Karen's voice and Richards piano playing compliments it perfectly.
No one ever talks about this song but its 1 of my favourites
Yes. It's one of my favorites, too. Love it! Especially with her on the drums, too.
Me too. And I love Leon Russell’s rendition. He was the writer of the song. Karen was so talented. We lost her far too soon.

brilliant!!
Actually it did matter. Her solo album was very lackluster in comparison to their earlier work together.

This Masquerade is one of the few studio recordings that featured Karen on drums. Most tracks had Hal Blaine on drums.
This came from the ‘Now & Then’ LP. Karen played drums on all of the songs except one.

George Benson covered this tune in 1976. This version was recorded in 1973.
