  • The off-grid ham shack is now 100% energy self-reliant. It has taken some time to develop an effective grid-down energy strategy. Today, the station acting as a TOC (Tactical Operations Center, can stay in the fight during a prolonged grid-down disaster.
    This video covers charging with the hand crank generator, in addition to solar power and wind generator.
    HUge thanks to @S2Underground for inspiring this video!

    Ah yesss, the hand crank Gen set for the GRC RADIO SETS of WWII! Felt sorry for our predecessors who had to wind on one of these back in the day! Semper Fi!

    As an additional benefit, the hand crank generator is also a great way to warm up when it is cold! Man, you have really been getting after it!

    Many people don't quite understand that you can have multiple charge controllers connected in parallel to the same battery or string of batteries. It is a very useful approach.

    I bet with a few 3d printed sprockets, you can gear it for a longer throw chain or step paddles to get more energy to effort.

    I saw pictures from WWII of a small metal windmill on top of a building a city in the northeast with a generator connected to a battery . I found that interesting. Where there's a will there's a way ! Appreciate your channel !

    this is a great video. If you were to do a little in depth it would be greatly appreciated. Where did you get the crank? How much was it? How long does it take to get a full charge? But awesome video.

    BONUS >>> you save on the gym membership! Redundancy is key, we all know the 2-is-1 rule. However the tertiary benefits can be found too!
    I still have tower envy, LOL !!! I'm working with telescopic fiberglass masts. They serve me well, but no match for what a tower could support.
    I hit Lithuania on 17M SSB the other day. Maybe we could do a voice contact sometime. My window into Europe is roughly 1300-1700 UTC.
    Be well!

    Julian, did you cobble that power system together yourself or did it start life as an install that you added to? Thanks for your vids...semper fi

      Hello brother.
      This has been an ongoing project since 2018. The process of getting where we are now, started in early 2023.

    Like how your ham shack is small and super efficient. What kind of lighting are you using in your shack? Do they cause any RF interference?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks 👍
      That's only about a third of the shack. The rest of it is used as a space for "just in case" gear and supplies. I'm very careful not to show that part of it.
      I found some LED ceiling panels for RV. They are DC, but cause no notable RF.
      I'll try to write a blog post on them next week.

    How much power are you putting into the batteries in this clip? I've tried to find one of these a couple different times, but I don't even know the manufacturer

    I have been wondering how effective the hand crank generator is for you. Do you have the numbers of what it outputs? I have several smaller hand crank generators that are supposed to be rated at 5V, 900mA but I think this is quite optimistic. After several tests with various devices and crank speeds, I can charge a smartphone 1% for every 15 minutes of steady cranking. I have also noticed that the optimal crank speed is about 2 revolutions per second as cranking faster does not produce additional current while cranking slower produces less. Maybe you already posted somewhere, but I am curious about your setup and experience with it.

      Perhaps it's time to do a detailed video on this topic. Then I can share the numbers. Not a lot of work, so perhaps this is something I could do later this week.

    Interesting concept but at your latitude (and lack of sun this time of year) you must be cranking all day for a reasonable charge...no?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  7 месяцев назад +1

      True, but. My station draws such low current and has enough solar to keep on going, provided it gets a couple of hours of daylight each day. If so, the hand crank generator is barely used. It isn't easy though.
