    Without watching - why the 240 is a *great enthusiast car:
    1. It is a tank
    2. it actually drives really well, rolls a bit when cornering but that's nothing huge
    3. Isn't as slow as people portray, even the basic small petrol models - and they hold their own on the highway much the same as a Benz
    4. It is safer than your newer but lighter econobox (little cars can go airbourne just running over roadkill, happened to a friend)
    They are charming, and their slower character brings a kind of happy-go-lucky feel. You make memories in them.
    5. They're just awesome

      I agree with everything you stated except for the weight. They're very light cars for their size at 2,957 lbs for the sedan. They are super safe and have really forgiving suspension despite that makes going over rough road or dirt roads a breeze. I was a Chevy guy before I got my 1983 240. Now I'm a Volvo and Mercedes fan. Throwing a 240 into a turn is hilarious because they have a bunch of body roll, but it'll take turns pretty well. Just replaced the oil pump last week and I'm excited to start driving it more.       Also, upgrading to stiffer suspension components doesn't make the ride significantly harsher, but gives you DRAMATICALLY better handling. Like, better enough handling to make the stock narrow wheels do 45 around an honest 30 MPH bend with nary a chirp.
      And that's another thing. There's just so much available in the way of aftermarket upgrades for these cars. You want better anti-sway bars to get rid of the excessive roll? Poly bushings? Stiffer springs? A real skid plate instead of that flimsy plastic splash guard? You can get 'em.
      Though, I wish anyone actually made new cargo area covers for the wagons, or snow guards for the cowl vents...
      Yes, I know there's that one guy who makes cowl vent snow covers, but I've bought enough things from him at this point to know not to waste my money anymore. His quality is garbo.

      My car is a 1999 C200 (classic trim) - also rolls like a bus but turns in surprisingly well and just manages to get out of its own way 😆

      The 240 being a safer car than modern econoboxes is not actually the case, in the safety department these have been surpassed a long time ago. In fact, over 13 years ago the British programme Fifth Gear crashed a (smallish) Renault Modus into a Volvo 940. The Volvo didn't fare too badly, considering its age, but the chances of surviving that crash were bigger in the Renault. Now add another 13 years of development... you can see where this leads.

      Absolutely, they feel just as nimble as any modern naturally aspirated 4 cylinder. Good point to add also is that the engine design is a non-interference so if the timing belt breaks, you just get stranded on the side of the road... But 240's are know to always take you home. It is definitely one of the best most reliable cars ever.

      My 20 year old kid also picked up a '92 240 in amazing condition. All service records included. He loves the driving position and the 360 visibility from the driver's seat

    I'm fifteen (soon to be sixteen), and I think I've convince my parents that a 240 would be the perfect first car for me. I'm being trained as a bicycle mechanic and I'm also a car enthusiast, so I want something I can wrench on without too much difficulty and mess with a bit. I also need something to haul bikes (and friends, less importantly). My goal is to have one by the end of next summer, and at the rate I'm going in savings, I'm excited that I should be able to afford one by then.

      Nice! I was a bike mechanic for about 10 years, even ended up going to Barnets and getting certified (required by REI).

      some quick pro tips:
      1. Buy a Bentley manual!
      2. Clean the maf and throttle body (car runs much better), and replace/clean the pcv system! If you don't do this, oil will begin to leak out of every orifice of the engine (ask how I know..)
      3. Always carry extra fuses with you, you never know when you need them
      4. The rear trailing arm bushings are a pain to work on as they are pressed into the axle itself. If you are going to do it yourself (its a real PITA), heres a link on how to build a tool yourself to get the job done: www-ese.fnal.gov/People/wilcer/volvo_trailing_arm_bushing_tool.htm
      5. Often times the air box closes off the main intake tube and gets stuck (it's for emissions purposes) My advice: yank off the metal flexible pipe that goes from the intake to the exhaust manifold, and either remove or replace the "flap" that is inside the intake box. If it sounds confusing, you'll get it after you take it apart.

    I'm a 22 year busy 240 tech in Portland OR. Volvo once made a car with integrity, the 240; best car ever built. Safe, simple, and passes emission testing at 30 years old.
    You can trust a Volvo 240.
    What Volvo sells today is junk, just like every other car maker.
    I often think about people driving past my '88 in their 'whatever' (2019 Kia), and they think about their last 240. And why they sold it.

      Agreed deffo! I have had 2 of 240's and eight years ago got a very good 740, still drivin great, no nothing compliments when i last checked it for register. I once had a V-70 but it was a big no for a me like who likes the 200/ 700/900 series which in my opinion are the only true Volvos. Greets from Finland.

    This video basically sold me on a 240. I was considering either this or a Mini Cooper for Minnesota in late fall/early winter, and now I'm dead-set on a 240. There's a good '91 244 near me for $1500 and a sweet black '84 242 about an hour away for $2300. A wagon is my ideal, and I might fly out for the right car and drive it home. But this vid basically lit a fire under my Volvo heart.

      NorthWriter this wagon ended up going to New Mexico to a guy that flew out and drove it back, my other green one same thing but the guy was from Indiana! Both sent me a letter about a year later saying they loved the cars more than anything else they’d owned and hadn’t had any issues, was glad to hear it. Good luck with your search!

      @@BudgetBuildBureau Thank you! I ended up finding an '82 out in Missoula that I drove back over a couple of days. It's not perfect by any stretch, and definitely has a growing list of things that I'd like to tinker with, but I love it. I flew into the Missoula airport, checked it out, and drove away. On my way I stopped at Target to get a few things, and another 240 geek complimented me on the car. Then just east of the South Dakota/Minnesota border I stopped at a gas station and ended up parking next to another 240 that a woman from Minneapolis was driving home from Sioux Falls (it was her second 240, after her first one got totaled). So I'm loving the enthusiast community as much as the car!

    I got my first '91 Volvo 240 wagon and he's a tank. His name is Chester (previous owner named him that and it fits his character totally) and I feel safe in that guy. I love driving him, his visibility is fantastic, everything is in great condition for being 30 years old (a few things need work but duh that's expected and I don't mind) , and he even has the third row of backwards seats in the trunk. I hope we make many happy memories together because he's already AWESOME. DUH.

    I have five 240s. Two four doors and three two doors. I have loved 240s for only 12 years and wish I had found them earlier. My plan is to have a automatic two door cruiser and a turbocharged inter cooled 5 speed. I have all the parts and am waiting on my shop to be built. What very exciting times!!!

    In 22 years of 240 service, I've replaced like 15 Manuel transmissions, and only one auto. The auto-trans are bullet-proof; may just need a leak fix. I recommend a '86 - '93 240 Volvo, with '88 being the best year.

    I just took a job at a Volvo dealer as a journeyman tech. I have always liked Volvo. When I worked at a ford dealer back in the 2000's I fell in love with Volvo. Super easy to work on, diag and modify. I love how function meets form with these cars.

    The 240 wagon saved my life.
    We slide down the ditch at 100Km/h The car snapped in half. It's a hell of a car. would have bought one but at the time I couldn't find anywhere I live here in Sweden so I went for a V40 from 2001.

    my mother had a yellow 245 GL wagon (1979) ... it went right across the south of Australia many times , they were right up there with Mercedes in terms of build quality and engineering. very underrated. I loved that car

    Proud owner of a 1992 740 wagon with 419K miles. All original no rebuilds and valve cover have never been off. Never painted or wrecked and still looks great no peeling or dulling. Been in my family since new. I drive it daily. I also drive it on vacations road trips etc. I will make a video of it hitting 500K miles.

    I'm a 240 owner yet again! I wasnt actively searching, but I couldnt past up this running 1991 [ auto] wagon, white over tan leather, with 166k mi. for the paltry sum of $450. bucks. Hadn't been on the road for about 2 years, and fired back to life with a jump start, just amazing

    This is awesome man. I bought my first 240 a year ago (a 93 sedan automatic) and just recently purchased an 87 240 wagon (manual this time). The sheer reliability of these cars astounds me, both have 250,000+ miles and I'm sure they will go for many more. Glad to see another 240 enthusiast ! Keep up the good work man

    I have several 240s very good cars and reliable, easy to tune and work on. And here in Sweden I get some 240s for free ;)

      About ten years ago, my ex-wife got one ('92 wagon) for free...low mileage, but had not been started in four years. I put a battery and gas in it. It cranked right up.
      Then someone else gave her another ('88 wagon). She gave it away to someone else...not me. Had severe rust issues, but it was a manual, and ran great. I miss that one.
      Now I'm having trouble finding used parts--having acquired the original '92--and there's not a single 240 locally right now on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I worked on it for ten years--most of which it was a daily driver for her or my daughter--and now it's mine. It needs some love, but it's almost the latest model, rust free; runs and shifts (auto) great.
      And it's a 240 Volvo wagon. Definitely something I can work with.

    I'm so happy that I found your channel because I'm fixing to convert my JDM enthusiasm to buying a Volvo for my Nexus daily / project / Street / track car but I'm just excited to step into the Sweden side of modifying and just kind of venture into something different that everyone seems to love and they seem to last a very long time

      Good luck converting them. I have found that they only want to deal with asian imports. Too many hours spent watching fast and furious I guess. Personally I feel that there is nothing more gay than a front wheel drive burnout.

    You can get some pretty nice wheels for the volvo 240. I got a 240 aswell, and im looking on some different types. Like: Ocean mk18, Ocean timeless, Ocean classic and Eiker 17. They all look good on the 240, and are some of the most popular in Norway/Sweden xD

    I own a Volvo 945 turbo wagon and a Nissan 180sx, I love both cars but honestly, nothing beats a 90's Volvo rear wheel drive wagon. Practicality, reliability, drive ability and power are all just perfect. You can do it all with a turbo wagon!

    I have a '92 white 240 wagon that I got as my first car. (manual, 2.0l B200f). I'd really like to get similar rims as yours with spacers, and maybe a custom exhaust. Yours looks finely tuned, but not overdone, very classy!

    One thing to note about the turbo swap if your donor is a 240 is the entirely different fuel injection setup. 240 turbos used a mechanical continuous injection system called K-jetronic. You'd be better off sourcing a 940 turbo because they had the more compatible (and easier to live with) LH 2.4 system, just with a different tune because turbo.

    Pretty sure that small tacho also were an option in the later interiors of the 140. It fits in the empty space in the middle between the speedo and the temp/tank-guages.

    about 16:52 talked about cruise. cruise is one of the easiest install and upgrades for those without it. For 1990-1993 US and Canada cars the wiring is factory installed and the parts are plug and play.

    Recently got a volvo 240 (1987, 195k miles, clean title, clean as a whistle), and was wondering if you potentially had a list of parts that you used on your build, as well as where you got them, brakes especially. I plan on turning mine into a street legal track car, with about 400whp as the end goal for power, and a bunch of track oriented handling parts.

      I got ahold of a Jeep, and damn they are fun, but for the power, and the gas mileage it wasn’t worth it. About $100 in gas a week, just for my commute to and from work, so about 35 miles a day. Now I’m at double the power and about $40 In has a week lolol

    Awesome video! Was also the proud owner of an '89 240 sedan which I also swapped with an m47! Fantastic car to drive, unfortunately got into an accident not too long ago that totaled it. Now working on a '72 144s!

      Daniel Pfender got me browsing my phone late at night from work lol. That's awesome! 305 motors are great, but from my understanding they aren't big powerhouses. I know guys swap in 350s, LSs, and even "bimmer" motors. If I have any advice, it's to enjoy that car at least a little before doing crazy work on it. I only had my swapped 240 for a couple of months, and didn't get it sorted out entirely until 2 days before I got in an accident! Regardless, best of luck to you!

      yeah, most of the us market v8's aren't putting down any serious numbers although many are compact being pushrod engines and i'm sure the torque would be fun. I'm a big fan of toyota/lexus v8's for swaps, or nissan vq37vhr with a cd009, cheap and powerful in stock form. Pick up a crashed car and swap everything!

      This had the bumper shocks on it, they may have been drilled and pressed in to have a more flush bumper look haha. Thanks for watching!

    I sold my w123 Benz and recently found a pretty decent '90 240dl wagon with m47 manual from the factory; it needed a bunch of maintenance, but there's almost no rust, which was my priority. I'm enjoying it almost more than I was expecting.
    My recommendation is to immediately change the transmission mount, and put in engine mounts for a diesel 240, which look the same but are harder.

    Hello can u tell me if the preheat hose on the 940 base should stay on, the mechanic didn't replace it and said I didn't need it but never mentioned the air box thermostat what to do with it or if I should somehow close off the openings where the tube was, seems like it puts a lot of hot air into the engine area.

    Man I am lucky to have found the one I did, for freee!!! lol, replacing fuel pumps, and had to hunt down some chewed wires but, the car is straight and clean interior, sedan 4dr auto, gonna hopefully swap to manual like you did, turbo and shocks and all

    Looking at this, the 240 / 740 / 940 series wagons would make a great pro street project, all the space in the world to tub the back end, and I'm quite sure that engine bay would easily swallow any small block. Front halve it and just about anything would fit!

    These are GREAT cars, either in saloon or estate version. Both are timeless. They're comfortable, solid, smooth and reliable, with a perfectly respectable performance, but if you're just looking to burn rubber, go elsewhere. Try for the highest spec you can find, and if you find one with FULL service, be prepared to pay the extra... it will be worth it. My first was a 164, (3.0 litre, straight 6) then a series of 240GLT estates, all automatic. Fifteen years later, I bought an s60. The interior was was nowhere near the same quality.

    There actually more than few wheel option for 200 series.
    I too thought that were only a few until i did some research.
    There are a lot wheels with 5x108 bolt pattern but the issue is ET.
    Solve that with getting wheels with similar to OEM backspacing, with spacers or by mini tubing and pulling fenders.

    Any 2" tachometer will fit that Volvo gauge cluster socket. I had aftermarket VDO. And turning radius on these is insanely tight, since front wheel spaced out wider, then rear(which are narrower), it will u-turn where Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla won't.

      Juliana Gurule Thule 300 gutter footpack and square bars, pricey setup but it’s Swedish and is very reliable and stout

    If you've got crown vic wheels on it, you should look for 98-02 LX Sport rims for it. They are 17's.

    There was a kit back in the day to put a SB Ford in these Volvo wagons. Paul Newman had one. Wish I could find one, I have a warmed up 302 that would push my 740 wagon down the road in a hurry!

    If you don't feel like dealing with adding a turbo, you can still swap out the stock M cam for a better one like the B cam, T cam or a VX cam from IPD. Combined with that cool looking exhaust that you have, it should add a little more oomph to your car's acceleration. Nice video, I love the 240's, thank you for sharing !!

      That's also like a 45 minutes job, biggest issue you'll have is adjusting lifters which isn't that hard

    Hey , Today marks 1 year of my volvo 240 wagon. I ve been modifying it bit by bit with a 7mgte manual tranny. I ve been able to use most parts from toyotas, subarus and other car makes into the brick. Nice job and keep in touch. My project is in Turbo bricks as " 240 7mgte swap" with pictures of the slow progress. SEe ya

      Nice Actually i had a Cressida with The 7mgte which was fun but The body rotted beyond repair. so on the way home from work i Saw a 240 wagon and it took off from there. Searched for one for about 8 months till I got the combo I wanted, red body and black interior. Yes as you said there are plenty of parts to get and swapable ,.It still on the works as we speak and I am dying to hit the street with it. My brothers in Puerto Rico are all into all toyotas too. Ia m in a hell of a budget as I always look for deals to put the car together. I had a 72 Celica with a 18R engine back in the 80's and it was my first project car. I had a 82 Celica with a 12 A rotary engine that kicked ass and then the cressida became the third and now the wagon is the fourth. Wait I had a 79 Corolla lift back with some minor modifications and I crashed it twice and sold it for a few bucks cause It was just bad luck. then the Celica 82 then the cressy and now the brick. I learned my electrical in a hanes book with a 72 hi lux pick up truck. Hopr to hear fron you.

    layed a 1973 honda trail 90 down in the back and had room to stack another on top. '86 240 wagon had 394k miles, m46 transmission. my advice though, any 240 under $1000 is a gamble. save your money and get a decent one

      Got a $1200 wrecked one. It was definitely overpriced, but it turned out to be a great car. Replaced the driver's door and fender and that was that. Of course I've done a bunch of maintenance the previous owners neglected over the years, but it was worth the price to me still. I agree that you should just get a nice one to begin with. No need to go tracing problems on a car that isn't worth much.

    we have same radio, same amp location and a tach but mine is the big one u mentioned. I drove mine from NC to michigan 10 times in a year and few times with lots of weight trailer no problem. even on dragon she was amazing. We lived in the back for a few weeks very cool cars... i wish mine was this nice but looks awful without the roof rack.. cool video xD btw mine has 400k on it did have to replace the rear end

    Plus the 240s 140s and back are strong reliable cars with protection for all the people inside the cars compared to the other makes as being a former owner of a 1981 244 GL it is very easy to adapt parts of a later version of 240, I had added a 3rd brake light,which look factory,changed the dashboard of the 81 because it was cracked due to the sun, added a later model dash to it it took me at least 2 hours, everything installed & working added some options to make it awesome plus if you have manual mirrors, and want to put electronic mirrors, they are easy to install plus add that touch, if you have fun working on your car, there are a lot of things you can do to improve the aesthetic of the car, like if you have the radio by the shifter or automatic shifter, you can put it on the upper part, since they have a kit, to install the radio in that space, most places where they install radios have the kits, to make these simple yet easy & beautiful kits out of the way of where the manual or automatic shifter is swap steering wheels, being that my car was automatic, no overdrive, I put a 1983 automatic transmission completely with the automatic shifter that has the little overdrive switch plus some other swaps to make your ride awesome,spectacular.

    Could you show the location of the tachometer connector location on the dash cluster in the back. I've been aware of this option but have not pulled the trigger since I've not yet found a oem tac or a vid of this conversion(in depth). Much thanks!

    Awesome 240 man!!! Love the work you've done on it. Would love to do a manual swap on mine someday just to make it a little more fun to daily drive, but even as an auto it's wonderful. Lot's of great info too for someone looking to get into one of these. Got my first 240 wagon back in January and you hit the nail on the head with everything.
    Only thing i'd add to the "down side" list is, for whatever reason, the tan plastic interior bits are the most fragile material on earth. Seems like the black pieces don't get as brittle and crack/explode like the tan versions do.
    On the plus side, i've never really turned a wrench on a car before owning one of these so i'm learning as I go. These cars couldn't be any easier for that process -- tons of space to work, affordable parts, and great manuals/online documentation.

      george fava if you do decide to swap it out to a manual, just make sure you gather all the parts first trans, clutch, flywheel, cable, pedal box, front half of manual driveshaft, and some 10-30 synthetic motor oil! It’s not too bad.
      And you are absolutely right on the tan plastic, not sure why that is!

      If you are talking about 10w 30 for the transmission, that should work just fine. For my m47 swap, I ran mtl fluid i bought from ipd, and the five speed felt great, its just more expensive. also @george fava my shop manual said the m47 took something like 2.4? quarts of oil for the tranny. In reality, it took less than 2. So if you go the mtl route itll save you a bit of money since a 1qt bottle is around $15

      Yes that's what I'm referring to, I believe IPD recommended using either 10-30 synthetic or MTL as you said. I filled my trans while out of the car and put the full 2.4 quarts of mobil 1 10w-30. Trans felt great!

    Thanks for the great video. I am also learning to work on my 1988 245DL. Wondering if I could ask your opinion on a problem that so far two volvo mechanics can't figure out. Going down the freeway at 60mph+ it starts to make a knock/rattle sound, and when I slip it in neutral abd rev the engine it gets faster, and the engine sounds louder, like there's a hole in the exhaust system. They didn't find one. One of them said it could have something to do with the catalytic converter. But both said the car is running very well otherwise. But neither had ever heard of a problem like this. Getting ready for a road trip so just a little nervous about it. Thanks.

      Sounds odd, could be part of the muffler internally letting go/rattling
      It’s fairly common at this point that the original exhausts are falling apart. Very common failure point on the 240 is the pipe breaks away from the muffler
