There was a man on the show who who was constantly abused by his wife. She sent him to the hospital on multiple different occasions. When he tried to run, she would chase him. Dr.Phil told him that he need to man up, and it was his fault he was being abused. That’s when I stopped watching Dr.Phil.

If he fought back would’ve gotten arrested because he’s bigger and stronger, and men never get the benefit of the doubt. I guess you’re one of those people who don’t think men can be abused by women. I’ll pray that God opens your eyes one day, and you come to realize that no matter what gender you are, you can still be abused.

@@BSJ-Unparalleled He chose to be a bitch instead of a man. He caused that psychological damage to himself by choosing to get punked by a woman. I have zero sympathy for that; it deserves none. The fact he had the physical qualities to defend himself makes it less, not more excusable! A man can't be punked by anyone - they can get their salad tossed in every conflict, but the fact they chose to not get punked is what makes them a man, not that they loss. As long as you try to defend yourself, you can maintain your dignity and self respect, and when you don't, you inflict the loss on yourself.
Being a man means something, and you have to earn it, it's not just granted for being born with XY chromosomes - that makes you male. Being a bully or letting yourself be bullied isn't how you earn it.

When they talked about the dad passing out after he got angry, I've seen this before. My father was a psycho ex-marine who used to beat the crap out of me. every once in a while, he'd just drop to the floor and be out cold for a while. He got diagnosed with Diabetes and that's what caused it. he got his diabetes under control and now he can flip out and beat people up without passing out. A true story of medical success.

Man I respect my dad so much for not having any problem with me gaming as long as I did good in school and did my chores and didn't act like a fool. I also had to earn every system and game he bought me. My dad didn't and still doesn't give a fuck if I play games all day as long as I earned it. He taught me respect and responsibility when gaming. Something parents these days need to learn
Same, I could stay up all night, and do whatever along as I still got my real life responsibilities done. Life is too short to not do what you enjoy, but never take time away from what needs to be done, so you can enjoy what you want to do. Kind of my moms motto (dad is somewhere, milk etc). Work hard play hard kindnof deal. Even in my mid 2000s mmo addiction WoW and d2 . I still got shit done and dumped too many hours In those games. And then Dark souls came out. The only time I loved a game so much it consumed me. And I was 20. Lost 2 jobs from darksouls. I regret it now. But God damnit. I still take 7-14 days off every new release from fromsoft. I plan it or take my vacation hours on releases. Zi stead of not showing up without notice lol, my boss even makes fun of me. I'm 34 and openly talk about taking vacations to sit at home and play obscure games. They take expensive vacations, I git gud

@@softjytsu I truly do think some folks just don't have the right of who gets what and when. Parents aren't obligated to provide gaming or general entertaining for their children. That's not a legal requirement. They could have easily clamped down on this but simply didn't know how, or didn't want to.

My brother in law is very similar to the kid. In his teen years he was just as horrible, but more verbally and emotionally abusive without the physical force. It begun shortly after his dad passed away when he was 12 years old. His mom (an incredible, amazing, kind, and smart woman) tried so hard to get him to go to school and finish it. People at church stepped in and helped tremendously, but he just didn't want to do anything, he refused to see any therapists, and was in the verge of being kicked out, until he finally "broke" his mom. He's 23 now, still lives at home, and he had some tough epiphanies, and is slowly mending the damage he's made, but at least there is some hope in the end. No matter how dim it is.
In almost every single one of these cases the parents are either abusive/neglectful or enabling.
The enabling parents are doormats for the kids rage while the abusive/neglectful parents act like they're innocent.

If this were real, the most probable reason he’s like this is because they let him game all he wanted so he would leave them alone. whenever something broke or he threw a fit for the newest thing they bought it so he would leave them the fuck alone. They noticed this was becoming a problem when it was too late, gave up and went to dr Phil so they wouldn’t have to deal with him.
No, letting him game all he wanted wasn’t the problem. Not specifically, that is. The problem was that they didn’t put their foot down whenever he misbehaved and take away the games when he did, on top of giving in to every demand he issued. Gaming is not the problem. Bad parenting is. They had no concept of carrot and stick.

Just to note, the camp he went to was likely an extremely abusive wilderness camp based in the Troubled Teen Industry -- the fact that he got out after only 9 days is a stroke of luck because there are people who end up in facilities like that until they are 18 and sometimes even older.
For real...they can be just as bad as the pray the gay away prison camps.
I totally disagree. With the way that his parents are doing, he was way better off learning something from those people.

The "cold" could mean having no tent or sleeping bag or standing in cold water as punishment until the situation becomes life threatening. Phil himself should go to a camp like this.
@@cthecheese1620 Think about the person that would get sent to these camps, their home life is bad, they got no future, many of my fellow camp mates were on drugs- they aren’t there because things were going well. Or just think about this kid. His father is abusive, his mother is a victim also, and an enabler. He doesn’t go to school. His prospects are bleak. If he commits suicide, there’s a very real possibility that it had nothing to do with the camp.
These kids have had it rough, and it’s not going to be looking up when they leave either. Most of a program like this is prepping you to leave your home when you finish, by way of military or college, because nothing good was happening at home your whole life, why would it have changed during your time at camp?
Do you know anything about these programs? You ever been to one? Respectfully, you sound like you have no real world experience or you think any bad result equals ALL BAD. Don’t kid YOURself, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Hitting is very different than spankings, hitting a child is wrong, punching will do damage, a spanking just makes your butt tingle for a lil bit but leaves no bruises or marks. Obviously the ideal situation is to discipline the child without spankings but sometimes a kid needs a good ass whooping. Shouting back and forth just let's the child think they are on your level and adult, you say what your gonna say and if you have to repeat yourself more then 3 times you calmly take away the things they like until they act right if they want to start getting violent and acting really dumb then you give them a good ole fashion ass whooping on the butt and that usually solves the issue, but you never spank a child in anger and you never scream. I'll agree there Is a fine line from discipline and abuse. My point is you can spank a child and it not be abusive and wrong.

In 90% of these cases it comes down to a bad household. The dad's abusive, absentee, and has health problems, and the mom sounds like she's been passive for a while. Her health problems don't excuse that.
Trauma interpersonal as I know personally it gets put into the children’s behaviour to distract away as you say to the real problem which is normally a Post Traumatic event and most children don’t know or process or underetand
Literally all they have to do is take away the controller or not buy a new one once it breaks. Then when the kid lashed out just, remain calm. Don’t be angry, be sad. If you truly cared, you’d be sad. Then just don’t be an idiot and give up on that the next day 🙃

I think people forget gaming can be a powerful form of escapism, similar to how drugs or alcohol can be. If someone who enjoys games has a spiraling awful home life, there is a good chance they will become addicted to the games as a form of escaping. His parents seem ill equipped, neglectful and abusive, and who knows what else might of happened at home or at school. I feel like it was really just being used to escape.

My sister and me lived in foster care for like 4 years before our mom could take us back. Turned out, her new husband was really into beating me while he was drunk. And my new classmated didn't like the new guy. So my only escape was my PC. I was getting better at games, and worse on social skills. Now I am really afraid to talk to any other human. If some of you ever get into a similar position, do not hesitate to call for help. Or just become brave enough to get new friends.

I have an 8 year old son, I can say that as a developing mind its up the the caregiver to provide boundaries and alternatives to tech. Its hard if you only rely on tech, but giving them the opportunity to craft , create, and manifest somthing into retreat real life is what they are searching for in games. They get to control the environment. Me and my wife found amazing progress from clay sculpting, painting mini figures. Dioramas , painting and over all crafts. I am no artist but we learn together. I find parents simply give up to easily because it takes away from. They're personal time.

Wow didn't think people would read that! I am by all means not perfect! Parenting is tough especially at progressive time in a child's development. Finding somthing they like and implementing that into reality is key. It is a struggle for most people to willingly give theyre free will to the child. Its not easy , but it is necessary, and your children, nephews , Nieces will thank you down the road.

But its up to us as the caregiver and more wise individual to understand that we need to give time Nd sacrifice it. It pays more than any riches knowing that you are a good parent. Its not immediate, but in due time it pays off better and brighter than ever imagined. Smiles are worth it.

In all fairness a lot of the camps Dr Phil has sent kids to have been proven to have some pretty terrible conditions

I feel bad for this child honestly, the parents are actively failing this kid, and to put him on live television for the world to ridicule is awful. The parents should be ashamed of themselves.
His mom probably has diabetes and has already had a lower extremity amputated and the dad has some weird issue where he "blacks out" and just falls to the ground for up to 45 minutes at a time. Both likely have large, looming underlying health issues. Realistically, they're both going to be dead in the not-terribly-inconceivable future...and then the kid will have no one left to blame, as well as no one left who will care about his excuses.
The kid is going to have to grow up, one way or another. To pretend that he is in any way sympathetic in this case is laughably absurd. And once he's an orphan, nobody else in society will care.
At 16 I was working and helping pay bills around the house. Yes the dad is a loser but at 16 you can use your own brain.

I work with kids like this. While kids are responsible for there actions and they make these choices, it's almost always caused by the parents not being adequately equipped to being an affective parent. I have dealt with parents pulling kids out of my facility against our doctors advice. It's heart breaking...these kids deserve better.
There is no guide to parenting... So just saying parents don't want to help or they are just wicked and mean is not responsible. I also love that a gamer without kids are giving advice to parenting. I have 5 kids, they are fine 2 love gaming and they are responsible. They do chores and when there is free time they play games. As a small child not a 16 yr old you can spank their bottoms so they understand there is a punishment they have done something terribly wrong.. not accidents but very bad intentional actions. It was very rare to spank them but mostly a stern voice and taking privileges away works. You have to correct them young and not wait until teenage years.
@@thunderballz74i mean there is support out there. And plenty of bad advice. Using physically corrective methods tend to be because we aren't creative enough to figure out solutions to correct the behaviour that don't involve these physical corrective methods.
Maybe the kid is extremely depressed. I went through a similar phase of my life. My parents hated me(they actually do but that's a long story) I was bullied and had zero friends or positive outlets in my life. Video games were my only escape, until my parents threw me on the streets when I was 14.

Happened to me to. My mom hated me after I got my first period. She's a total narcissist and I guess she felt threatened by me.
I was SEVERELY bullied in school so much so that I developed bad anxiety that prevented me from going outside because I felt like the bullies were going to find me and come hurt me. (I still have that problem. I always feel like they're going to come for me). I went to online school but it wasn't an escape because my mom would mentally abuse me. I would just sleep, draw and play video games. My grades dropped completely. I was getting Ds and I just didn't care. Getting in a car would result in panic attacks and I would kick the windows of the car to escape. I did manage to get better when I decided to go back to public school for the last two years of highschool. I was in a new school so I felt better. But after covid hit and we all got locked up it fucked up any progress I made in that time and I'm back to being a depressed paranoid recluse who plays games for majority of the time. :/ I feel seriously bad for this kid.
If he can sit and play video games for 17 hours a day he has a real shot at becoming a streamer. Just put in that hardcore grind on Twitch, no editing required. I thought about becoming a streamer, but I get bored of games after an hour or two and I hate the idea of editing if I wanted to make RUclips videos instead of streaming. I think a better idea than going on Dr Phil and going to a boot camp would have been to send him to a streamer camp so he could learn how to start streaming now and actually start building towards a productive future. Once he started bringing in some money his parents would probably support him, lol.
The dad 100% has anxiety. That was totally a stress induced panic attack.
The 9 days part is pretty comical, but in fairness, after the Catch Me Outside girl blew up, she talked about a lot of the abusive shit that happens at that "camp". The kid might be developing into a PoS, but that doesn't detract from the fact that Dr. Phil's camp probably needs to be shut down

I also grew up in an abusive home and the goal of every day went from doing normal stuff to 24/7 exhausting attempt at escapism. even now I can't control myself too well and go to my vices too often which happens to be video games.
That's one way to look at it but games are just as valid of a hobby as sports or tv, movies. Maybe limit how long your sessions are if it's having a negative effect on your thoughts but I wouldn't consider that a vice personally. It's the most popular media option to spend your time for a reason. Also sounds like gaming kept your sanity through hard times.

I still have weekends where i easily play 20 hours, I have months where I barely play. It's getting better but their case is addiction as well for sure since they mentioned escapism

My dad was a gamer in the 80’s and held records at his local arcade, the person he competed against was the owner of the arcades kid and they eventually ended up getting rid of the game bc he couldn’t beat my dads record. But he also did this when I was younger and we would play need for speed unbound and would compete against eachother, also when I played armored core for my first time. Only problem is when he drinks he’s abusive to my mom so I had to grow up with this extremely nice guy and then he completely changes character when he drinks

I grew up playing video games just as much as that kid, and still play them a lot even today. My parents had no problem with me playing video games because I was always quiet and I rarely ever misbehaved. Yet, I still graduated high school and can hold down a job. Because while my parents let me play video games as much as I wanted, they still didn’t give me whatever video game I wanted and if I misbehaved, which was rare, they punished me for it. And that’s why it was rare that I misbehaved. Video games are not the problem. The problem is bad parenting.

Yeah, those places that boast taking away electronics from kids tend to be places where the adults try to get away with abusing them. Taking away the videogames temporarily isn't going to solve the issues at home causing him to resort to escapism in the first place. 🙄
I feel so bad for this poor child. An abusive father with health problems and a crippled mother so he just wants to escape the cold harsh realities of his world in video games and when the parents decide to send him to the camp and the kid agrees they pull him out because "he was cold". Likely story.
I don't know some of the camps that show uses are kind effed up and rife with abuse so probably isn't necessarily bad. Just a crap situation all around. Hope that kid goes on to have better experiences in life than his first part.
Most of these camps in the troubled teen industry are just in it for the money, many of them are part of trafficking rings, the amount of kids that are abused go missing, and are forced into dangerous situations outdoors are astounding
I guarantee the reason he was able to quit bootcamp is because the mom was sat at home feeling guilty and as soon as he picked up the phone to complain she's said they'd pick him up. Failed him right there and then, should have left him to see the bootcamp through and could have had a huge positive impact on the rest of his life

I had an issue between when I graduated from college and started working where I was like this kid. For me, it was depression. My parents didn’t buy me many video games, so I got them through odd jobs. I think it helped because I had to get my stuff on my own and it made me be more self-reliant. Got a better job, bought my own car and rented an apartment. I’m way behind where I should be for my age, but I still game and my depression is much better. The parents just need to stop enabling him. My parents were supportive without being enablers.

I remember once as a young tween I decided to tell my dad to go away and leave me alone when he was at my door. A split second later my door flew open with my dad's foot behind it. It was the last time I saw that SNES. Guess what I didn't do again. I was sitting in a house he paid for playing on a game console that he bought me and there was zero chance I was going to sit there and disrespect him without consequences. He wasn't off the hinges. He didn't lose his temper. If it weren't for his eyes he would've looked totally calm. I disrespected him and he took the steps to put an end to that shit. A few years later he was the same guy that happily bought me a Playstation. A lesson needed to be learned and he taught it quickly and effectively.

This is sadly relatable. Everybody miss understanding the situation at the first instance. The dad being an abusive piece of shit and either refuses to or simply does not understand the people he lives with. He does not know why his children don't want anything to do with him and blames it entirely on their escape (videogames) and tries to control them like a piece of shit making their addiction worse. Whilst the mother enables them since they are trying to make the child feel better without dealing with the core of the problem as they might not entirely be aware of the complete picture. Then the cycle continues without anything moving forwards only getting worse.
The only way to resolve the issue is to then communicate and make small steps forward in order to develop more healthy habits and to diss-impower the abuser so they get no satisfaction to at least control the situation better. Which in turns helps the videogame/drug/alcoholic, addict recover since the core of the problem is no longer in control. Thereby freeing up their mental capacity from escape to recovery mode. Only to wait for the powder keg known as the abuser to blow up on account of them loosing control and all you can do is take steps before that happens in order to still be able to move forwards with life.

I became addicted to World of Warcraft in high school. When my parents took away my computer and internet access, I hated them for it. Today, I am so glad that my parents loved me enough to make the necessary uncomfortable intervention to get my life back on track. I am a happy, healthy, productive adult because of it.
