To use his example, I was that near 400lb guy in a normal gym, going 1mph on a treadmill drenched in sweat, barely hanging on. If anything, the community was cheering me on. It's been my experience that people in normal gyms absolutely aren't sitting there harassing new/overweight people. As long as you're there to put in the work, I've never met a more inviting community. Since I moved and had to use a Planet Fitness due to lack of a real gym in the area, I've never felt more judged at a gym. I'm down to 260lbs and now I'm in a gym that doesn't allow barbells, heavy weight, large waterbells, etc. And on top of that, we're in the gym trying to lose weight and you've got a gym shoving pizza, bagels, and donuts at people. Most of us are the size we are because of our lack of self-control, and you offer up a vice? Good business model, but as a gym, this place is a joke.

99% of experienced fitness people don't look down on anyone and are in fact cheering you on, the people that look down on others are just general a*holes regardless and often fairly new to the scene themselves. Agree with the other part of what you said about the foods offered there etc and congrats on your progress

I don't think it's so much about how they act towards people, I imagine most people are going to mind their own business. I think a lot of these people might go to a normal gym and see it packed with all these extremely fit people and they're one of or even the only person who's considerably over weight and feel quite insecure about it and be much less likely to go back...I think that's what they mean by "intimidation." I think it's a good idea, giving people a place to go where they might not feel out of place but their view on people who are already healthy and the irrelevant things like having a big water bottle just feel so toxic.

This so much. Also not necesarily gender specific, although some women are weird af (likely on defensive stance thinking you want to score) .
First time I've ever been cheered on energetically was this young girl. She was red as a flag so I went ask her if she was ok and complimented her on pushing herself so hard and doing full range movements at it. Later we ended up sharing racks and after i spotted for her she became the hype woman on her turns, it was big nice.

I've been going to the gym for a few years now. I was morbidly obese when I startes. I am still obese, closing in on overweight. I've gone to multiple gyms because I had to move town twice and the first gym I went to closed due to Covid economic issues. I have NEVER had a single issue. EVER. No weird looks, no comments, nothing but an encouraging environment. I haven't even seen any planet fitness (I think its a USA thing?) but from what I heard it seems to me that even leaving aside all the issues, PF is just... useless. I mean if your issue is you don't wanna go to the gym because you're self conscious. What you need is to go to the gym so that image disappears. You don't need a "gym for people who don't go to the gym", that's ridiculous and counter productive. Even without the pizza, without the lank alarm, without the dress code, without the membership issues... Take away all that. Its still a bad idea.

the funny thing is the non-judgmental environment of planet fitness is somewhat redundant now, because gym culture frowns heavily on mocking people who are trying to make a change and improve their health. last time I saw someone mocking a fat person at the gym was also the time I saw a beef cake lifter scold said person making fun of that fat person and got right in his face, we want people to improve and feel comfortable in the gym.

    • @Raz_Tactical
      @Raz_Tactical 6 месяцев назад +2

Yup gym culture is generally rather supportive especially to new members. The only time i've ever seen anyone mocking a newbie was when an experienced lifter approached a newbie that was doing frankly dangerous stuff.
The lifter tried to explain how to do the exercise safely (deadlift) and suggested the newbie drops some weight from the bar so as not to injure himself. The newbie didn't take that well and started going off throwing meathead insults so the experienced lifter finally snapped insulted the newbie back and went you do you but dont come to me when you get hurt.
Now when you get to advanced lifters there's quite a bit of toxicity and mocking among them but a lot of it is just people being competetive. But blaming steroids or claiming to be a natty when you're not is very common.

I've been lunk alarmed at a PF because I used too heavy of dumbbells and I guess somebody complained. Had to use PF because it was the only gym near the hotel on my trip. I am not an ego lifter, nor judgmental towards anyone stepping foot in a gym to meet whatever goal they have set for themselves. I felt so awkward when the employee came over to me to tell me that the alarm was gong off due to me. I honestly had no idea what to do or how to act and felt too uncomfortable to finish my workout. I didn't drop the weights, make any grunting noises or anything. Someone was just upset by me existing there. I put the weights back and left. If this is the type of environment you want PF to be by all means I will stay the F away.

On the topic of the "lunk alarm": I've 100% experienced this at Planet Fitness. I was new to a leg press machine, was having trouble locking the back into place for positioning it properly, dropped the metal bar (that was probably less than 5lbs) used to lock it into place, and suddenly my ears are exploding. If anything, it made me feel self-conscious and judged for not knowing how to adjust the back of the machine. I wasn't kicked out or anything, but it was extremely unsettling with how random and insanely loud it was, and if I had been lifting weights at the time, I very well may have dropped them.

We should of course be empathetic and understanding of the circumstances, but we simply cannot make changes on our system without a death certificate. When someone can go into depth naming each muscle a specific exercise uses, the exact amount of nutrients in what proportions best support recovery and growth, how to identify and treat different sports related injuries, proper work rest cycles for an entire intensive workout, and do it all while being genuinely friendly and sounding excited, congrats that's the exact same thing that happens when a magic the gathering nerd meets someone on the street who also plays it. Your gut determines what you’re having cravings for and people who need to lose weight need to change their gut microbes in order to diet effectively long term. We were around the corner from the front desk so they couldn’t see us but the camera was pointing right at us. No one was grunting or dropping weights, the only think you could hear was the ridiculous music. There was no reason to ring the alarm. So I tested it, and sure enough the alarm went off every time I flipped off the camera.

4:50 it depends on the muscle group being worked, the strategy to work it (such as burnout hypertrophy), and the weightlifting goal. You can actually build a lot of muscle using low weights over time, but that doesn’t make you that much more proficient necessarily at handling large weights. Perhaps there’s some correlation and having more muscle mass means you can naturally handle a little bit heavier weights, but generally you’re gonna better at what you train at.

People's goals will also differ, if your goal is to get toned then you don't need the same stuff as someone who wants to big "show" muscles or someone who just want to be strong. Also people's bodies are different, a short woman will physiologically not have the same need for heavier weight as a tall man does. I'm 194cm and 20kg's (50lbs) was what I was using after about a month of lifting, and I was by no means ripped at that point, but I have a physiological advantage or disadvantage depending on what your goal is.

Smell can be a shrug for some and _overwhelming_ to the senses for others (just as fireworks can be too loud for some while others' ears are fine). While I wouldn't find it a big deal, why would they spend money on pizza and bagels when much will go to waste or be sitting out all day? If I could only have a limited number of "cheat meals" a month, why would I blow it on that? Lastly while some cheat meals are OK, your post workout meal is when your body is most primed to absorb nutrients - if you're ever going to prioritize healthy meals, post workout is the best target.

Endurance has the rep range of 13 and above.
Hypertrophy has you struggling to get reps between 8-12. This training gets your muscles bigger.
Strength has you struggling to get reps between 4-7. This is a faster and safe way to get stronger.
Neural training has you struggling to get reps between 1-3. This is the fastest way to build strength but not recommended to do more than twice to three times a month, as it drains you mentally and proper form is required.
Edit: Most bodybuilders don't recommend doing one rep max every month. Every 8 to 12 weeks is enough.

No because hypertrophy is at its most efficient around 6-12 reps while powerlifters do 1-5 reps for strength. Sure powerlifters do also grow in size but not as much as bodybuilders. Do you get stronger while bodybuilding, yes but not even close to the same speed or amounts as a powerlifter. To get stronger you need to lift around 80% of your 1RM and to get bigger you just need to add volume to your training and get a pump. That's why people refer to those who alternate hypertrophy training and strength training as "Powerbuilders".
For this you can compare Larry Wheels to Ronnie Coleman. Coleman was an absolute unit yet Wheels completely crushes his lifts even though he's considerably smaller. And Coleman was also an anomaly in bodybuilding because he trained heavy which most bodybuilders don't do in fear of injuries.

@@USMC49er Weightlifting means olympic weightlifting. While you're right about the endurance part, calling it weightlifting just shows your lack of credibility as it's mostly technique on top of strength and is completely different from bodybuilding and powerlifting.
On top of that bodybuilders don't really do endurance since there's no benefit for them to do so, except after hitting their weight goal when they just work out for a pump to maintain the muscle but that's not really trying to train endurance, just going higher reps with less weight to avoid injury and to still get that pump.
Powerlifters occasionally do endurance training since it also helps with 1RM maxes and you can't progress with just 3-5 rep sets after some time.

@@USMC49er any training that utilises fast twitch muscle fibres and using an overload training system (anaerobic / ATP system ) will make you stronger , generally 1-15 reps before slow twitch muscle fibres (aerobic) become involved . Most professional body builders training for hypertrophy will train anywhere from 6-20 reps depending on a number of factors macrocycles / micro cycles / body part (specifically its make up ratio of slow to fast twitch anatomy ),high intensity overload principles ie drop sets, supersets, rest pause etc etc it’s not as simple as strict rep ranges .. muscles adapt to new stimuli and as you become more advanced different training principles have to be applied to generate more intensity ie reps/ sets / of course weight / time under tension / advanced training techniques etc ..

So, I can validate these claims unfortunately. I have always gone to my local gym instead of PF; however, when I was daring my ex, she convinced me to come with her to her nearby PF with her and her friends. There was actually signs just like the, "Please don't use more than 4 plates on either side to foster a welcoming environment," one. It's depressing... I'm not even a well fit guy and I felt bad for the people that are being told no preemptively just for essentially loving what they do and coming in consistently..
I immediately went back to my local one even though it is significantly more expensive. It doesn't matter to me, because I'm not the one being targeted; but, don't advertise that you're welcoming, when you aren't. Just ruins the vibe you were apparently going for.

PF is ok for cardio. I didn't build muscle effectively till I started working with a barbell. If you really want to get strong, you should be doing squats, deadlifts, bench presses and overhead presses basically every time you work out. You can accessorize this with pull ups, dips and curls. You can't do 75% of this at a planet fitness because they don't have a power rack or even a bench (A smith machine is not a good substitute because you're not working on stabilizing the bar).
If you have no other option than to go to a commercial gym _to get strong_ , go to Crunch or LA fitness. Better would be a well equipped YMCA or work gym. I lucked out and have free 24/7 access to an awesome gym at work, but I don't think I could maintain my fitness goals with the equipment at a PF.

I was in the military for 11 years, one place I was stationed at there’s a planet fitness just 2 blocks away from me. I went there, instead of using the gym in our base, as after work, and during my day off, I didn’t want to see more military people or others from work. But the months I went to planet fitness (as we tend to get deployed or go on detachments), I’ve never heard of this alarm. Cancelling my membership was easy too, I just explained to them that I am being stationed elsewhere. I never had any issues with planet fitness.

That gym deserves to be trolled though. This is why I work out at home. It's free, you can be creative with how you work out, you don't need to travel or find parking, etc, and i hate not being bare topped when I work out because it feels too hot and just a hindrance when I'm doing strenuous workout.

I know this is a year old but you got some of this wrong. I left my local planet fitness because they wouldn't get off the alarm. Any plate rattling at all, any heavy lifting and the alarm was going off. Nobody was shouting like in the video it was just normal gym sounds and *Tornado Siren*
So it's really more of a your experience may vary.

PF is literally for the general public. They expect this kind of crap. It's why you literally see the signs say things like "This is not for bodybuilders" or some other crap. If you just casually workout maybe once a week, maybe even twice a week, or anything less than that, PF is your gym. It's America's gym. If your actually into working out, and your in the gym often, you never considered it an option, you knew it wasn't for you so it never became part of your options. You went to a real gym in your area. I personally use my local YMCA, they have a huge gym with everything you could ever want going on in there

  • @xdress1746

I can definitely believe someone's negative story about PF being wildly different from another person's. It's a relatively large chain, with each location seemingly regulated differently from the next. Where one might have someone specifically monitoring cameras and sounding the alarm for the most minute things, another might kick someone out just for "looking too strong," meanwhile ANOTHER location might not care at all and let people do whatever they want.
