Hi Adam. First book recently with KDP. Smooth sailing, mainly. Only one revision needed (although the final copy has one line in a bigger font, which doesn't seem to have been my fault, but it's a dramatic climactic line, so I left it in!) Found it user friendly. Paid for an artist cover (after futzing around on photoshop and failing) who is great and comparatively inexpensive. Bought my own ISBN. No other problems so far, but I've heard the stories.
I recently self-published two poetry books on Lulu and KDP. I found the Lulu experience better. At least from a design perspective. I really liked the design layout and revision process on Lulu. Amazon's revision is a pain and always looks weird. I haven't received my author copies from KDP, so I can't say how the quality is yet. The ones from Lulu came out exactly how I thought they would based on the previewer built into the site. The market for books on Lulu is small compared to Amazon, I've not made any sales yet, so I can't comment on the distribution from either of the two, yet. So many yets here.
I used KDP recently. I learned whatever personalised template they give you based on the information you put in - page numbers, cover size, etc - will always be wrong and will gaslight you into resizing it anyway 🙃 I don't know how they get the most basic elements of their own accessibility wrong
Haha, yes! Everyone has different experiences so others may have something to say about my ratings! 😅 Cover designs and ebook formatting are the bane of my life! I can say that much! 🙏🖤
