  • More than just tips: this is coaching for the contest!
POEM is deceptively simple: behind its short lines are complex ideas, images, and emotions. How can you communicate all that to an audience?

    POEM by Jorie Graham
    The earth said
    remember me.
    The earth said
    don’t let go,
    said it one day
    when I was
    accidentally
    listening, I
    heard it, I felt it
    like temperature,
    all said in a
    whisper-build to-
    morrow, make right be-
    fall, you are not
    free, other scenes
    are not taking
    place, time is not filled,
time is not late, there is
    a thing the emptiness
    needs as you need
    emptiness, it
    shrinks from light again &
    again, although all things
    are present, a
    fact a day a
    bird that warps the
    arithmetic of per-
    fection with its
    arc, passing again &
    again in the evening
    air, in the pre-
    vailing wind, making no
    mistake-yr in-
    difference is yr
    principal beauty
    the mind says all the
    time-I hear it-I
    hear it every-
    where. The earth
    said remember
    me. I am the
    earth it said. Re-
    member me.

It was so nifty to watch the transformation of the piece. It was well delivered even at the start, but the way it evolved was incredible.

This is beautiful! I am a teacher and I struggle to keep the meaning of poetry alive after teaching the same syllabus over and over. But it is definitely possible. Thank you for this.

Understand the meaning. Focus; see it then express it. Thank you Conrad and Margo.

@leahgodson2319 Thank you so much, yes this is exactly it! So glad you appreciated the work, it takes time to go deeper into a poem!

Wonderful the transformation from very useful instruction, more dimensional understanding and living the words you speak from the written. thank you🌟🌟🌟🌟

By the time it took you to read this I wrote ten poems, five sonnets, a play, and two biographies, what have you done?

🤦🏾🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏾🤦🏻‍♀️ I clicked for the beauty, I stayed for the poem, what are we doing? The poem gets interpreted by all who read it but why are we judging the artist/performer? Just recite it the way you feel like it’s best. And after all that the last recital was less confident. You had it the first time. ❤

as much as I'd like to agree with you, I also want to say that the groundedness in the recitation of a poem doesn't come easily. People often fly away in a flight of fancy and lose the images, the imagination, and the sensuality of the poem. It is important to stay with the poem till the end and it is not easy to do that. Some instruction, some gentle instruction in that direction is very useful.

@@09kaustubh the first take was the best. Go ahead and paint the image. Doesn’t always sound best extra painted

@@HumbleGxdOfori when you paint, you first render an outline. Then one layer. Then the next, then the next. A painting completes in many layers. The same goes with writing, acting and all other arts. No reason why poetry recitation should not follow suit.
