As a primarily ear player the thing that has struck me over the years is that although I expected to go through a rookie stage when I learnt to sight read, many accomplished sight readers don't expect to go through a rookie stage to learn to play by ear. Those players need to let themselves off the hook and just have fun playing along to straightforward tunes until they start to develop. Also my sax tutor thought he couldn't play by ear because he brought his theoretical knowledge to the task and somehow thought that was "cheating". He definitely could play by ear because our lesson warm-up was ping-pong and he didn't know what I was going to play but he could always answer which meant he _could_ play by ear.
Thank you for this 🙌🏾 I’ve basically taught myself how to play by ear back when I first started on flute but I wanted to improve on that so this is so helpful! I love your videos man
This is very useful: I have been playing for 6 years, and still read way, way too much, partly because I enjoy reading, but mostly because I am so poor at memorising. I will try your methods. Thank you for your efforts
OMFGAWD! I get it now! This explains and teaches me immediately... I can actually comprehend this! WOWZERZ 😮 Thank you from the deepest, darkest, coldest, caverns of my little black heart 🖤❄️🥶
LOL maybe I should make a video on sight reading next (although I struggle with reading more than ear training too!!) thanks so much for watching man!!🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's exactly, how I do it with recreating Soundtrack by Ear (However I have a good Hearing Skill in the other Hands lol). Next Time someone asking me, how I recreate a Song, I'll link this Video, since I can't explain it that accurate like you did in the Vid :0
I reeeeaaaallllyyy appreciate this, I've been wondering how to start this process for a long time. I stared learning intervals but I wasn't sure what to do with that or where to go. Tha k you so much. I was also wondering where to go from here. Like how do I then move on to learning to hear chords, their qualities and of course the progression? Thanks so much you're an inspiration.
If the song starts with a scale or has a scale in it Try to figure out what the scale is and you probably will find the key from that key ESPECIALLY if it’s jazz music
Jazz Chords are often very colorful due to the many extensions so i often figure them out by figuring out the intervals and how much "Color" they give. Lets say the chord is Dmaj7, I try to find the root note first. Once i establish that the root is D, i try to find the 5th, which is the least colorful interval. Once i figure out that the 5th is A, i find the interval in between (The 3rd) which is F#. Now that you have a basic triad, just add that last color note. In Jazz, its usually the 7th so a way to think about it, the 7th is just the 7th note in the scale (In the case of D Major, the 7th is C#) So now that you found all the intervals, you can piece them together. Hope this helped!
Abedin's advice is really great! Although, I tend to listen for the quality of the 3rd first cause that often times dictates the quality of the 7th (but not always). But you can also just try to pick out each individual note and piece them together! Those chords are always harder to hear but the more you familiarize yourself with how they sound the easier it will become.
ayo when you started the recording of twinkle twinkle little star, it sounds like the beginning of twinkle twinkle little star from cocomelon, i know these things because i have 2 brothers under the age of 5-
For me I look up the key then just make sure I stay in the key and try playing along with the song the first time on my tenor and then the second, third, fourth, and every other time I try and correct all of the mistakes I made in the attempt before it is that a good way to do it?
That’s pretty good! Although, you won’t always be able to look up the key and often times there are notes from outside of the key. But definitely a good strategy!
I did a livestream to celebrate 100k but I rarely stream anymore. It’s too difficult for me to keep a consistent schedule. I’ll try to post ahead of time next time I’m planning on doing one!
@@FoolishFrankie i can read, just not sight read and play at the same time hahhaha in the guitar where you can play the same thing in 10 different fingerings
you don't get enough credit for your long term content, I found this video super helpful
It's long form, not long term

Glad it helped!
Frankie this certainly was not foolish. Great advice. Gonna be using this technique immediately.
Thank you!!
I'm just leaving a comment for the algorithm. I have read that people found it helpful, so I believe them (I'm not a musician.)
Thank you 🥺🙏🏻
I like how I watched the entire video even though I actually struggle way more with sight reading than ear training 💀

Ayyy that’s awesome! The process seems to be pretty universal which is good! Ahh thanks so much I’m glad you think I explained it well!😌🙏🏻
The worse it sounds, the closer you are to the target tone ^
Thanks for the tutorial.

What the mouthpiece you use and does the mouthpiece effect your sound as much as I think it does?
Should be in the description and the mouthpiece is less important than the player but still important
If the song starts with a scale or has a scale in it

can you give me your method to score a Fast melody or a fast solo line
this is mainly how i learn my songs on guitar. but the only one part is to find jazz/ not usual chords do you have aby advice how to find them by ear?

Can you make a sample videos that guitar chords transcribe for alto sax?
Thank you
Thanks for watching!!
Do you have any more tips for learning changes to a tune by ear?
Do u have anymore tip for learning tune by ear
This is the bulk of it!
Listen at 75% speed
you are the best
No u🥺
i tried to play a song i really love by ear like this yesterday and it went well! i can almost play the whole thing now, so thanks for your tips😌
Gonna use this to learn Everybody Wants to Be a Cat (i can’t find a version that i like online)
Check out the Jazz Networks version!
What about recognising chords?
Maybe I’ll make a separate video on that
ayo when you started the recording of twinkle twinkle little star, it sounds like the beginning of twinkle twinkle little star from cocomelon, i know these things because i have 2 brothers under the age of 5-
how do you go about transcribing chords?
That would need another video probably tbh
For me I look up the key then just make sure I stay in the key and try playing along with the song the first time on my tenor and then the second, third, fourth, and every other time I try and correct all of the mistakes I made in the attempt before it is that a good way to do it?

Would if im a b flat
So i’m wanting to learn to play in my church by ear will this work on that as well?
Yes absolutely!!
You explained how to transcribe, but not how to memorize the notes, which is my weakness.
Don’t memorize the notes. Memorize the sound. If the sound is in your head, you can find the notes
i play by ear because i cant read haha
i do struggle with sounds outside the range of the guitar like bass
It’s good to be able to read too!
