One addition: If your camera has a built-in exposure meter, be sure to set your film speed (ISO rating) on your camera each time you load a new roll of film.
Yes! The camera shop guy only reported the end result errors he saw but yes I definitely did the ISO setting thing too. Thanks for mentioning.
And if it doesn't get one that does until you are used to it
Yes, and some cameras can read the DX coding on the film canister. However, what caught me out was that Fomapan 400 does not have DX markings. My little Olympus mju: does not have a means to set the ISO manually so I had to get my film processor to fix it.
I have shot film for almost 50 years ands I have done the blank roll!!! All great tips!!!
I think we all have :) Thanks!
Great video, Matt! Your channel has been a huge help to me. I recently picked up a 0.58x M6 TTL and am over the moon with it. I mostly shoot 35mm and the 0.58x VF is amazing!!! I hope they eventually make this an option for the new M6. Thank you for everything you do!
Thanks Greg and congrats on your 0.58x!
Hehehe I was waiting for the lens cap from the beginning ....glad you didn't let me down.
Excellent 🎉
Thanks Rob! Haha yes!
My no.1 tip for any film camera noob who just bought their first film camera -
Before you load it with film take it to your local camera store and ask them to check it over.
They'll happily check the shutter fires, check the light seals and film advance mechanism works, they'll even load a new film for you and show you how to use your camera.
It's good to support your local camera shop, they may give you tips on the best film for your needs and any local labs to get it developed.
I recently took my newly aquired £10 Yashica T2 that I bought untested, it takes one of those odd 6v cells, to my local camera shop.
They fully tested it before they sold me a new battery, they even put an old film through it to make sure it was loading and spooling film fine.
One very happy customer!
Yes great shout to support your local camera shop and ask them to give it a quick check.
Dear Matt,
A non exposed negative film is affter the processing CLEAR/transparant (
except the black 5 inches of the start of the film).
A non exposed reversal /slide film is after the processing BLACK.
( except the clear / transparant 5 inches of the start of the film).
Yours, Jaco
Thanks Jaco, yes I tried to show a blank C41 film (with the frame numbers showing on the side of the film).. thanks about slide film
Another suggestion:when using old film cameras that require batteries, know the way the camera works in terms of battery usage. Does it turn off automatically when not in use? Does it drain the battery completely if you don’t turn it off? That sort of thing.
Thanks Jack, yes top tip!
Hi Matt, I’d like to add #11 make a note of the film that’s in the camera on some masking tape on the baseplate, and #12 don’t accidentally order 24 exposure rolls because after 40 years I did and was convinced my camera was broken when it reached frame 25, Doh!
Haha thanks and yes a 24 roll would catch me out too!
I am not a newbie to film photography, but I was a newbie to my M-A and totally forgot the rewind switch, and it can happen to those who should know better! Fogged almost 8 frames screwing around and finally remembering the rewind switch. *FACEPALM*. So don't feel bad. :)
Thanks! I hope by saving this it can save a few others :)
Share the know-how. Thanks. All I can add is that with film I always attach the loose end first and then turn the take-up spool to be sure it is attached. Then I just pull the canister end and drop in into where it belongs, close the back and away I go. Another great video.
Yes great tip! ..and thanks
Great advice Matt, as always!
Thanks Lucy!
If a person is not sure about the film in the camera they can go into a room with NO light OR use a jacket to COMPLETELY cover the camera, and check what is in the camera ,, better than opening in the light,,, In the past we had a bag that we could put our camera (or film loaders) into then put our arms into the provided holes..
Yes, good tip! I use a dark bag if at home and the hotel room bathroom normally if away.
Thank you Matt for this video!. The only thing that is unfortunate about the Q3 is a real 35mm!. It undoubtedly provides extraordinary files!.
Thanks! Yes I still love film the most
My slightly past beginner but still beginner tip (and one from personal experience): if you’re shooting black and white film with a color filter (like yellow for example), make sure to remove the color filter when you switch to color film! Unless you like piss yellow photographs that is
Haha yes!! Top tip! I've done this too :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom it’s the worst! I like to call it the “Mexico” or “videos games in the late 2000s” filter lol
for tip 6 also remember the leica's !, if you add a motor drive you need to hit the rewind twice!, once to "detension" the motor winder, next to engauge the rewind crank! ( the force of the motor can cause the same thing!, so turn it off, and reset the camera to stop the motor from ripping the film). Also be aware with any slr, some motor winders do go THROUGH the film cavity, so DON'T remove the winder until the roll is done!
Great tip, thanks for sharing!
Good advice. One thing about buying an old camera and then going out to shoot is that the old shutter curtain may have pin point holes in it and that first role is rubbish because of that. I have an old Barnack 1931 1C which I have not used due to this fear and I might just send it off for a service repair and ask for a new shutter curtain.
Yes! This is why don'e use good film for the test roll. My Leica ic (later model not Standard) was the same and needed a new shutter.
Well said about the film cameras not mattering as long as they focus and wind the film ok and don't have any light leaks, and the film remains flat on the rails, they are just fine. The best ones are easier for the photographer to use but have little to do with the quality of the image. It is all about the lenses and how good they are. Great lenses make great pictures on even the cheapest camera as long as what I said at first is true.
Thanks and yes 100%!
Done the film advance thing myself before. Advance lever suddenly "jammed" and i couldnt figure out why. I even went to the trouble of winding the film back, taking the cannister out, reloading it, then shooting at min aperture and max speed with the lens cap on to get back to the frame I was last on.... same again!!!.... then it dawned on me... the roll of Delta 400 in my camera was a 24, not a 36. What a dumb ass 😂😂😂😂
Haha thanks David, ah yes I should have mentioned the whole 24 vs 36 thing, i've done that too haha, great!
I love my Minoltas ! ( I have 2 Leicas as well )
My SRT101 is an absolute gem. Love it
Great images for the price!
Yes these Minolta can give great bang for the buck!
Hi stranger, bonus tip #4 set/check your ISO, you don't want to shoot by accident your portra 800 when your camera is set to ISO 125 or whatever.
Yes! Thanks Gary. I made that mistake with my very first roll of film in an automated camera.
For those of us who grew up on film these are hilarious
Haha, very common the shop said!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom good grief 😅
Matt, one other reason for mistake 1 is that this is the Correct way for Auto loading point and shoots!, NOT a manual 135 slr or rangefinder, or a MF 120 roll; these ALL have to be grabbed by the spool, and inserted into the "crocks jaws" manually; also for 120 users, in hasselblads, rolliflex, some film magasines need you to 'cock' the counter, by a lever, turning the winder backwards (Hasselblad 12-on backs), or like the rollieflex 2000s/3000 the switch for multi-exposure, or BOTH power switches have not been set correctly.
Yes absolutely, good point
I'm glad the youtubers aren't going on about the Olympus OM's and making the f2 Zuikos even more expensive, they cost enough as is.
I'm sure someone somewhere is talking about them. I had the OM-1 as my first film camera (before my records as I stopped film then later tried again) but the size is good (and the lenses).. I used Zuiko glass on M43 in my early years.
Hahahahahah... Just got back a roll of blanks ! It happens to all of us.
Sorry to hear, and i'm glad it's not just me!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hahahaha... not just you ;)
I'm cool and hipster too !!!! And I use cool film 🙂
Ah thanks! :) One day I need to buy one of those hats.. even if just for the winter :)
Oh yes! You got me with #1 and #10 - Film was not loaded correctly and had the lens cap on once on a medium format rangefinder... *facepalm*
Hey Tobi! Thanks, yes easily done! :)
Hello Matt
Do you ever sell cameras or lenses to people at their request ? I am NOT worried about the expense of the equipment. My interest is in Leicas and possibly the LINHOF 4 by 5. I really love equipment that is in mint condition and working perfectly. Thank you again. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
RS. Canada
I only sell if I’m not using as much (my taste changes over time) I’ve sold some of my most expensive cameras in the last 3yrs.
That beanie looks good on you Matt, sure you don't want to just try it for a while?
Haha it was difficult finding one to fit! Lol
Yes, but how can you feel like you've been truly initiated into the worldwide community of film photographers until you've shared the trauma of making all these mistakes? As the Spider-Man fans like to say: “It's a canon event; I can't interfere.”
Yes very true James, but ideally make them with budget film not Portra 400 :)
Ha...No. 2: Stress marks..I do remember.....it must have been somewhere in 1987.
The film got stuck in my favorite camera: a beautiful Mamiya nc1000s...(still in my possession) turned so hard on the rewind crank that I ruined the little holes in the film for the sprocket wheel...result; a completely destroyed film... Luckily the camera survived my rookie behaviour. Memories, memories...memories..
My conclusion: Digital has it advantages...if I could only love it as much as film .......
Thanks! Yes I've definitely ripped the sprocket holes before!
one mistake I made, with a Hasselblad 500c/m was I put 400 ASA film through it, and didn't have a lens hood, so Please use one!, Always, and if you have EV 15 or 17 like I did (when I digitally metered, and set that on my lens), USE 160 or 100 asa film, you will get horendous flare!!- not a light leak, but glare!! when using 400, it was an expired fuji pro 400 H, not available any more, but the asa correlation should still hold water.
Is that the older lenses? Newer CF are pretty good. C ones flare much more.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yes, I used both an 80 and 180, cfi and cfe lenses!, not the C lens.
Isn't it odd the Pixii has a native M mount and is digital and yet Leica uses L mount
for it's digital mirrorless . I would love the SL3 to come in both L and M native mounts.
Just use L-M adapter, that's how I do it. (L mount is for autofocus lenses)
I love the Minolta x-700
Use it more than my m3
Yes it's crazy it's it. Some camera just gel with us more than others. I use my M3 a lot but the X-300 just works!
That was a 10…😂 over the years, I have probably done them all. Then there is # 11, forget to put the lens cap on a Leica m while it sits on the patio table in the sun.
Ah yes, I burnt my M3 curtain too. Good point for M users!
How do you have your film scanned? I use a Nikon 9000 but have a lot of dust problems with silver B&W film where the ICE feature can not be used. Further, there just seems to be a lot of "mottling" and uneven border density with the medium format scans. These are exacerbated if one processes to add "guts" to the image.
Epson v800. Easy and no real dust issues.
i've done #10 on the M6... not a whole roll though =)
Luckily I had the Xpan with me too so I still got a few shots (like the photo shared)
Surely if the film wasn't loaded properly and it didn't wind on, the film would just be unused (and still inside the light-tight canister) rather than ruined. It's just a matter of reloading the film and starting again.
Yes but people don't realise and send it off for development believing it to be exposed
@@davidellinsworth3299 Fair point. I recently saw a video in which 60% of American school-kids don't know how to tell the time on a traditional clock. The mind boggles!
Correct BUT newbies assume it's been used so send it to the lab! (That's why I say if the rewind crank has no tension don't send it off, just re-load it, correctly).
My biggest mistake: My photos suck (even if they are exposed correctly)🙃
Lol! I’m Sure they don’t
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom You're too kind, Matt.
There's nothing worse than shooting blanks. 😂
Haha :)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Actually... not shooting at all is worse...
No hipsters allowed
Haha :)
I'll admit, I did ALL those mistakes. But I'd bet, all that happened before you was born 😉
Lol thanks, i'm 45 so I grew up with film but sadly discovered photography much later once the early 3MP digital cameras had arrived!
Better late than never 😉
AWESOME ...you're using the COOKE lens to video this too aren't you MATT 😊... yes I know the Cook Look , but if I am wrong , then shame on me 🤣 Good video fun and informative. love the Grrrr .... film binding face. 😆
Glad your saw that Chris, make sure you watch my Part 3 Cooke video. (This video is shot with my Cooke alternative lens) ;) ..it's better ..and thanks re. my acting!
