Thanks for sharing an interview with such an interesting human being, who has contributed so significantly to FOSS. Folks like Larry, ESR, RMS, Linus, etc., will one day be seen as the founding fathers of the movement that will ultimately (hopefully) liberate mankind, both intellectually and otherwise.
Interesting dude and a reasonably well-done interview. You made a good editorial decision not to edit and allow the pace of Larry's responses flavor the video.
It's funny. I have met a lot of people like Larry Wall. BTW, kudos to a great language. I wrote an HTML parsing program in Perl v2 and it was a wonderfully fun project. But to Jonathan, the only critique I would make of your interview is that it was pretty slow and 'draggy,' if that's a word. Other than that I enjoyed it. Notice how Larry answered most questions by pausing to THINK before shooting his mouth off. Smart people take a second at least to THINK about what they are going to say. I hope I can be more like that myself. ;)
Great interview and very well done. If you could somehow get at least a phone interview with Ian Murdock that would be awesome as well. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!!!
Where can I get one of those baller ass shirts? Also, very skilled interview. Well done. Also that reference to Hegelian Dialectics was pretty awesome.

Great interview with a real quality person. Thanks for making this available. Is this link "open source" enough that I can add a page on my site recommending this clip, and notify my usual visitors?
"Conforming the world into what you wanted" is not just a hacker mindset but probably almost everyone. Only difference is you have a nice skill that gives you an advantage especially if it involves the internet.
At this moment, python is blowing perl 5 out of the water. I'm wondering how L. Wall is planning to retake (or reconquer) the world with perl 6. EDIT: great interview btw.

+Brett Golding Him and half the hackers from the 60s/70/80s that we all admire at one point or another hacked on gov/darpa funded stuff. Not something you can really hold against him.
Okay attempt, I would say. But there is so much epistemological questions that could have been asked to Larry, regarding symbolic representations, enumeration, computation and modularity of mind, computational theory of mind, instead of which this dude wastes time asking a counterculture icon whether he is against Capitalism?!? Of course he is. Read his book. Putting him on the spot with a carefully phrased question that is essentially an apology for Capitalism, a worldview which by its very nature reduces human beings to beasts, does not contribute anything to knowledge. Larry has made his anti-capitalist views clear enough in his book. At least it was reassuring to see, from his smiles and smirks, that he was able to see through the shallow, empty, postmodernist mind of the simpleton interviewer.
Nothing wrong with postmodernism, and I don't think this is the best guy to be asking questions on epistemology. Sure, he'd provide some interesting answers, but others have much greater insight into this field.
Interesting statements in the middle of video. It frustrates me when people talk about 'capitalism', they speak as though it is a complete societal 'package'. It isn't , it was never intended to be. People who are ranting about capitalism need to stop acting like capitalism was some kind 'solution to everything', that they hate. It was not, is not, and never was. Quick bit of knowledge for those reading: Capitalism is a doctrine that is actually juxtaposed with some other doctrines. These being: 1) The Family, an institution that raises children, 2) The Christian Church from which come morals and wisdom and faith and is intended to be the Insurance through charity in the community 3) Occupational education; teaching technical skill for jobs that produce products and services and 4) the Republic, under God: a sort of Common Services created to seemingly: solve some security issues, provide some limited common service, and establish common currency and 'weight and measure standards' for various things so travel communication is easier. Put these together and you have a more complete picture of America's real 'societal package'. So those who hate capitalism, please put all of these things together when speaking. You can look this information up yourself in a good history book. Capitalism by itself tends to be greedy, and does end up eventually creating robber barons who will gradually control everything and create oppressions. One has to appreciate the other structures to balance capitalism. Capitalism is fantastic when operated in a moral society. Money cannot be the god of the land. These people are like those who complain about a pair of RAM sticks before plugging them into the mainboard with the other components all plugged in together properly. Putting the thing together and studying it intelligently before you speak would work much better.
Hmm, dude I'm as serious as the millions of kids who starve to death every year, your movie needs a remake and some effects, that baton scene was so freaking weak man
I could stand listening this person talking for hours and hours.
+Fabrizio Alonzi you should try sitting. It's more comfortable.

Rock On Larry!! Thx for perl and your part in open source. Too aawesome..
he wears the same shirt in all his interviews, it seems to be his fav :p
From now on, NSA is going to be known as "The Customer" for me. Very nice interview.
“If your reasonable or unreasonable they might let you get away with it.” What a good line. Made me chuckle!!!
Larry Wall and the Perl language are the best :)
Wow, this is one of the best interviews i've seen. I Enjoy that you wanted to present it to us 'raw'. TY!
Great interview Jon Schiefer thx ; ) I wish you all the best.
Interesting dude and a reasonably well-done interview. You made a good editorial decision not to edit and allow the pace of Larry's responses flavor the video.
This was awesome. Larry Wall seems like such a cool guy.

Please note this video was shot in 2013. Not 1974.
I've always imagined Larry Wall as a cat owner. The kitty just suits him so fine, damn it! LOL
Borilius Belatorium I agree :)

Such a great person
Seem to recall he was in the Documentary BBS by Jason Scott.
Beautiful mind and true! original
This guy is beyound chill XD
In the 90's (based on my experience), IBM was making money with compilers for Cobol as well as CSP (4th gen development framework), PL/1.
It's too bad that there are not more video interviews with older generation programmers. I know there are a lot in book form.
yeah, first wave of hackers
great interview :)
Larry Wall always busts this shirt, top guy
Reminds me of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite.
Genius!!!
Excellent

that giant remote behind him though

I wonder if that shirt is Larry's "interview shirt" cause he wore it in the Big Think videos.
That's his f@#$ your cultural norms shirt. It's really ugly, and I think that's why he wears it.
3 NSA co-workers watch this vid.
love from india
Well, he didn't create the OSS movement, but he certainly had a big hand in it.
All that and he likes cats too.
Who would have thought Bun E. Carlos was a hacker! Nice!
51 seconds in, thumbs up.
31 minutes later, no regrets, thanks :)
Let that poor cat out!!!!!!!!!!!
Hear him scream around 19:30 LOLOLOLOL
I believe Larry Wall is the only hacker in the world who likes to wear Indonesian 'batik' shirt!
It’s an Australian Aboriginal designed shirt it’s got kangaroos on it
At this moment, python is blowing perl 5 out of the water. I'm wondering how L. Wall is planning to retake (or reconquer) the world with perl 6.
EDIT: great interview btw.
Colin Finch Mostlythinkihave both works. That is the important thing.
Well .. To Do ..
Reminds me of Alan Harper

theres an edit at around 1130 you liar
Fair enough :)
Your fly is so real!
Can someone please tell me what word Jon (the interviewer) used at 24:07? It sounded German, and I don't know it
Uber-leets, something like “super hackers”
21:35 😂😂😂
Someone needs to make a meme of 1:54
I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE THE PERMISSION FOR POWER TRANSLATED TO SPANISH FOR HISPANIC SPEAKING PEOPLE. THANK YOU.

So Larry Wall was instrumental in helping the NSA
