TAIWAN'S TOUGHEST DAY-HIKE? STEGOSAURUS RIDGE (劍龍稜)
- Stegosaurus Ridge has a reputation as one of the Taipei area's most difficult hiking trails. Join Richard as he goes solo to discover why. This gruelling hike offers outstanding views of the northeast coast as it rises around 700m to tower above nearby Teapot Mountain, Jinguashi and Jiufen. But be warned - those views don’t come easy.

The Trail
Arrive at the trailhead as early as possible, as this can easily turn into a full day if you are not a fast hiker.
1. This trail is definitely not for beginners and it can be quite treacherous, so having a hiking buddy or group is advisable.
2. Be prepared for a long day. The hike will easily take 5-8 hours, possibly longer.
3. Bring sufficient water (2 litres minimum) and lots of snacks or lunch.
4. There is no shade or shelter along the ridge so either cover up or bring plenty of sunscreen.
5. Check the weather before setting out as the ridge is very exposed and you do not want to be caught on it in a storm.
6. Long pants are a good idea as there are lots of spiky trees along the trail.
7. Bring a camera. The views are spectacular.
Note: Since making this video I have discovered that there is a new, legal trailhead for the hike. It is located near the 81.1km marker of Provincial Highway No.2 in Nanya (南雅), The trail begins behind Nanya’s South New Temple (南雅南新宮) and includes lots of rope work - so bring gloves
Travel Logistics
Getting to the trailhead is relatively easy, but can be time consuming.
You can catch a train (check timetables here: www.railway.go...) to either Keelung or Ruifang stations and then from there buses (791 from Keelung, or 856 from Ruifang) will take you to the trailhead.
Warning: The buses are very slow and can take up to an hour to reach the trailhead at Nanya.
Take a taxi to save time, although it will cost around NT$550 (US$17) from Keelung.
Drones
There are currently no known restrictions on the use of drones in the area around Stegosaurus Ridge and Jinguashi. A useful reference tool and map on drone restrictions in Taiwan can be found here (www.flyerlee.c....

gorgeous
Wow, how a good job, and so brave, thank you for sharing the beautiful view to us!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It looks really fun thanks for sharing! I would like to give it a try by myself
You should! But I wouldn't recommend doing it in summer, or on your own!
Well done buddy! Fantastic views
Cheers! Has it tempted you to give it a go?
So glad you went so I don’t have to
Awesome
Hahaha. I would go again, but not in summer!
Hi Richard, thanks for sharing the video! Miss the mountains in Taiwan. Some of the trails in lower elevation mountains are way tougher than those well known hikes at 3000+ meter mountains. Look forward to watching your next video, perhaps you can find a T-Rex trail?
Thanks for the kind words.
This is one of the most challenging hikes on the north-east coast, but the views from the top of Banpingshan are among the best in northern Taiwan, as far I'm concerned. Still, there is an easier way to get there! Nice work.

The summer in Taiwan not only hot but also humid 😫😩
Welcome to Taiwan.
I lived in Taiwan for 18 years. So no welcome needed!
You’re really great.
Thanks, but I didn't feel great after finishing!
Good job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! 😃
👏👏👏🍻🍻🍻
Asia Hikelopedia
I guess, Mt Teapot in your right side of finally part. After climb to the hilltop if Mt Bang Ping, you have to turn right and down to the path, than could get the way to Mt Teapot. Anyway, it was a mazing tour. You climbed the king of city near mountain.
Thanks. I missed the turn because I panicked after seeing the lightning!
Taiwan's Crib Goch (Wales)!
Is that 汐科 station?
It's better to wear a pair of grooves to grap on rocks to save your energy.
Thanks
Are u living at xike bro??
I used to live not too far away. Was staying with a friend.
@@AsiaHikelopedia ok, may be if u living at xike I want join next hiking, next week I want hiking at hehuanshan north peak. And I am from Indonesian.
See you sweating like raining, I could imagine how humid & hot it was. I had similar experience, like exercising in sauna.
But you get exclusive view without other climbers. Good try.
Thanks。 It was so, so hot!
There are several ways to go top,. You got more hard way
It was pretty tough!
Don't hiking alone or just two.
Some mountain sites even have UFO, must be careful.
OK, thanks.
