Rest and recovery. Don't jeopardise the years ahead due to impatience over these next few weeks.
you are so fortunate to have the NHS. when you crashed in Brooklyn i was worried you'd wander into the ER and end up with a huge bill. I'd do what they recommend. 6 weeks isn't that long really.
I did the exact same thing to my elbow in 2016. First surgery was on Jun 18 then had the hardware removed Oct 25. Removing the hardware made a world of difference. It limited my range of motion and it was sore. As soon as the hardware came out I had almost 100% range of motion back. 4 - 6 weeks healing after removal is about right. I followed the instructions my physical therapist gave me and after a few weeks I was back to 99.9%.
Speaking of broken bones, American Urban Cyclist here. Two weeks ago I had a bad smash up and broke three ribs and lung contusion. I am so happy that I discovered your channel a few weeks ago, because I have been watching all your videos. You have an amazing channel, you do brilliant work and it’s truly the only enjoyment I get while I lay on my couch out of commission. Your videos have totally made me crave scones, coffee and inspire me to keep on riding. Also all your friends are now familiar faces to me and is very enjoyable watching the interaction. I just wanted to take the time to say Cheers and keep up the good work and as a fellow guitarist, I really enjoy your Fender jams.
“Celebrate tradition but break convention”...I like sound of that 👍
Hi Francis, I'm a trauma surgeon from the Netherlands and would be happy to give you advise on your fractures. There is no need to take out the wire and pins in your elbow only when they bother you I would take them out. Also if they take them out only the skin has to heal since the fracture has healed already. So this would probably take less than 2 weeks. Your scaphoid fracture may not have healed completely if it is still hurting, a mri scan or ct will give a final answer to that question these fractures are know to heal slowly or even not heal at all. An additional operation may be needed in that case.
cheers Bas!
now, as you mentioned your arm injuries again - are you serious? :) currently, my right scaphoid bone and the upper end of my left ell are broken - already more than 2 weeks in casts... i can tell you what doctors told me: there is running an artery through or besides the scaphoid bone. so if the bone does not heal properly or in a slightly wrong direction, it might lead to complications. as far as i know is the method used with your ellbow pretty common. in general: listen to your body! if some actions - e.g. putting pressure on your wrist - actually hurt, don't repeat the actions. i already started some self-physio with my left ellbow about a week after the accident. starting with a slight movement of a single finger and don't use extra weight. since your ellbow was injured, try to lift your forearm 5x - take a rest and repeat. always immediately stop if any sort of pain occurs. you might also take some hyaluronic acid to speed up your bone recovery. as you already said: YOU CAN NOT RISK ANY CRASH! give your body the time to recover, otherwise you definately risk severe long-term damage. i crashed a little more than 2 weeks ago, on my way to monte zoncolan. we took a route through the dolomites and wanted to ascend a little road to warm up for the weekend. i suddenly lost control when the surface changed from gravel to tarmac. our accomodation was located on "via zoncolan", but with 2 broken arms the only experience i could get was going up by foot. as soon as i got my diagnosis i was like "ok, zoncolan gone. season gone. fucked." a few days later, i developed a strong will to return to monte zoncolan this year - as long as i recover properly. listen to your body mate! and no! do not risk it for a biskwit!
Hey Francis!
I was hit by a car 3 years ago and smashed my leg open as well as dislocated my shoulder (and concussion, etc etc). I was out for about 4 months before getting back on the bike.
What worked for me was tons of physio as well as rehab with a kinesiologist as well as IMS (intramuscular stimulation). As for the pain you're experiencing in your elbow, some of that pain may be alleviated when you have the hardware removed. I know for me, when I had the screws removed from my leg, I felt a lot better and regained some, but not all, of my range of motion. Recovery time was "6 weeks", but I just gave it a few days for the flesh to recover before I hopped back on the bike. I took it really easy and made sure not to do anything to make me crash.
Hope that helps and heal up soon!
David Tam shoulder is the worst
I've managed to break both elbows while mountain biking. This is the most complex joint in the human body as it both bends and flexes. The first break was managed conservatively and it took 6 months before pain diminished and most flexibility came back. The second break 7 years ago, was more spectacular coming off an adverse camber at 50kph and landing on the tip of my elbow (olecranon) which shattered into 7 bits. After the NHS operation, I have a titanium splint and 7 screws which are still in place. I have continued to bike every day including downhill sorties to Mont St Anne, Les Jets, and Whistler. My advice is to get as much physio as your insurance can afford and think about the screws-removal if the pain doesn't go away. It will take time to heal.
best luck for you Francis , hope the op. will go smooth and you will again enjoy bike and guitar soon. Fingers crossed!!!!
KW 3 Hills - standard!! Headley-Horton burnup to finish. Sounds to me like you should get the metalwork removed. Not much of the season left anyway. Might as well get it removed and heal/strengthen over the winter ready for next year.
I crashed with my bike in march 2017, broke both my arms, needed surgery on one of them because it was partly shattered. Recovery was pretty slow, took about half a year to get rid of most of the pain. Got another operation in may 2018 to remove plates and screws, this solved most of the problems, no pain or sensitivity anymore, only a bit of stiffness remains. All of that time i kept on riding (not racing), making sure i did not crash again, which would make it worse again. It just takes time to heal. Get better soon!
Looks like you’ve got the recovery nailed, join a band.
Dec ‘18 I slipped on black ice, both feet up and landed on my left arm, thought it was broken but NHS said I’d fractured it a fingers width below the ball joint of my left shoulder from the outside in 3/4 across. Also was wearing a watch that pushed the crown into my wrist and the top of my hand swelled up (didn’t wear a watch for a year after). Arm in a sling, a months’ worth of happy snaps at east Surrey (they don’t do passport photos but thought I’d ask) & 3.5 months off work, slept in a recliner chair for 5.5 weeks cause lying in bed hurt like hell, then about 8 physio appointments and good to go. Actual recovery took about a year to get the reach (so I could scratch my back without the muscle cramping). Had no problem cycling but first couple of rides my left arm ached like a bastard, then all ok.
Just for something to do I looked at one of your first videos (vlog 4) I was surprised to find that your dad playing piano and having a heck of a good time..it is good to see you involved in music also
that was my Dads mate Dave on the piano, they host a pub singalong in Soho every week!
Great to hear you go to the Tour de Friends this year.
You kind of inspired me to go on the tour this year.
See you next Week!
Take the necessary time to heal Francis, don't rush it
Francis anything related to boons recovery you should have Trigonella in your food intake it is fast the recover time. Wish you all the best WOLF in your complete recover. Nice video as usual. Congrats for +42 members. All the love
Take it easy and recover well, mate. All the best!
Broke my Collarbone last spring, plenty of road rash on my arm as well. No op needed, bandage on the road rash, was cycling again 2 days later, ignore the pain.
I found myself spending a lot of time on the indoor trainer when I had injured my arm, but if you're still keen on proper riding then make sure you take it easy as there's no real reason to risk shagging your arm up even more.
Also I found that healthy feel good foods, like fruit smoothies or coffee, might not necessarily directly help with recovery, but they certainly help with lifting your mood whenever you can't do the riding you want to.
Happy recovery
Same boat (sorta) triple radius fracture and ulnar wrist dislocation on 5/17/18. 15 screws, PT 1/wk limited results.. just got back on the bike. 65% extension and nerve damage.. no push ups yet. I added 30 minutes of TENS machine to my routine every other day. Seems the most effective aid. Cheers
Back in '79, nose pressed against the window of the bike shop with a couple of mates, all drooling over the Campag kit, had to settle for Suntour VX at the time mate whose dad was a plumber got the Cyclone mechs (still got the front and rear mech). :)
As for your injuries, do the exercises and don't take any big risks with the hardware still attached.
A good friend of mine did the exact same thing. Definitely have the screws and wire removed because his started irritating the soft tissue causing more problems. He was back on the bike in about 3 weeks, but continued the physical therapy for about 6 weeks to gain his flexibility back. Just don't rush it.
Had lots broken bones racing and riding two wheels both motorized and not. Most recently broke my elbow 2 years ago that took well over a year and is normally the case with elbows will not fully straighten. Physio and swimming helped with that. In April broke my sacphoid and ulnar and that was pinned and is a work in progress but I try to use it fully and put up with the pain because I know from past wrist breaks getting on with it helps been forcing myself to do push ups etc. The pin did some nerve damage though that may need another option but that would mean time off the bike so I will probably wait it out and see how it progresses.
So good physio, force yourself to try and get back to normal function asap.
Also broke my elbow last year in a race ... they removed the hardware 6 weeks after the first surgery because the pins wanted to come out of the skin.. then my arm blocked at almost 100° so the physio sat on it for 2.5 mouth to get it at 180°(arggh that's fuc... painfull).
As long as your scar after the 2nd surgery is ok; you'll be fine (mine took over a month to "dry" and heal). You just have to be patient.
Now 1 year later I can rest my arm on the TT pads no problem but the plank position is a bit difficult sometimes
Cool video. Even though I've been hit hard enough to roll off the hood of cars different 4 times and had road rash over half my body, I've never broke any bones. Hope the surgery/recovery goes well.
Francis, I had a displaced scaphoid fracture back in 2003. On the same fall, suffered a radial head elbo fracture as well. The wrist needed surgery and a titanium screw and was a very slow and painful heal, about 6 months. Funny thing is that it never hurts and is full strength, but the elbo to this day still bothers me. That was considered at the time to be the minor injury. I would suggest getting another opinion on the wrist. Fractures on joints are serious busness, not to be taken lightly.
Still playing catchup Francis, you are legend!
I recently flew over the bars in freak accident and fractured some vertebrae, seems recovery tome is about 6 months for bones to heal is the average .
Speedy recovery !
Okay dude, it was almost deja vu seeing the x-ray pics. My break was the left elbow. Two pins and wire. I didn't get whether you cracked it, or whether it broke all the way through; my damage was all the way through into the socket. I had some bone fragments come out, which made recovery worse, and it still sticks sometimes. Anyway, second operation to remove pins and wires made a huge difference in range of motion, pain, and progress regaining strength. I have a weird illness called gastroparesis, which adversely affects my nutritional balance, and made my recovery longer. However, three days after having pins removed, I was doing physical therapy. Strength improved mostly in the first two weeks after pins removal. I got a Dainese mountain bike elbow pad to start riding sooner, just in case I fell on the same spot. The bad part, which I hope you avoid, is sensitivity to cold, hard surfaces, and altitude. I cannot put my elbow on a table surface because it hurts noticeably. I feel pressure in my elbow on an airplane. Anyway, if you want to race, plan on maybe three weeks after pins are removed, and think about getting a Dainese elbow guard. Feel free to ask questions.
Scaphoid is difficult because of positioning, as I'm sure many other people will say R&R is best. I'd also add maybe try mitts for a few weeks, I don't usually, but it helped after I'd broken mine getting back on the bike just to ease pressure on it. It's now been 3 years and summer miles are great, keep it warm in the winter and it's fine, the cold and damp it can get a little achey. Best wishes on the recovery though man.
Ahh the twang ! Hope that your elbow and wrist will heal soon ! Ride safely out there !
I used a bone growth stimulator to speed up the healing process. I sold it on ebay when I was finished with it. There were others there for sale as well.
I broke my elbows and scaphoid a couple of days after you. I didn't get any hardware since the radial head was shattered so they removed it completely. I was told the soft tissue damage can take up to a year to heal. I'm only just getting near normal movement but still can't put push down without pain. I guess the answer is time and keep it moving.
Fracture my scaphoid from mountain biking.
2 months in a cast, 1-2 months in a plastic support cast + physio with this weird hand slime stuff for grip strength and mini elastic strength bands for building wrist strength.
Was off the bike for about 4-5 months total and was pretty good after that.
I've had very similar injuries... After healing up had pain in wrist and elbow until I had a piece of bone removed from the wrist and all the junk/metal from the elbow. After that all good but never the same. 4 months recovery.
Hi Francis,
Love the Video as always! Concerning the scaphoid, you will have to be very carefull as it can take up to 3 months to fully heal, potentially longer if it is getting too many Impacts/harsh Vibrations. The Elbow will be sore after surgery but not as much as after the first surgery. By removing the Metal they remove the foreign Objects in the articulation and this could potentially resolve the Issues you are having with it. This will however take Time and it is difficult to tell you how long, given that I haven‘t seen or felt the Elbow myself.
Try take it easy on the Scaphoid, I broke mine a while back and I thought it healed, then played bike polo and broke it again. Ended up with a screw through the bone which took even longer to heal.
Done my scaphoid last year, took about 3-4 months to get back to feeling 100%, even though it was healed after 6 weeks. That said, mine was completely in half so hopefully yours isn't quite as bad, but either way, it'll take a long while to feel 100% again, so a matter of what you're comfortable with really. That said, the elbow will probably take longer, so the wrist should be fine by whenever the elbow is.
Great vid, the strap secret is nearly out!I always think the groupset debate is a debate for people with too much money haha. 105 works flawlessly in my experience, and its so satisfying to fly past the DI2 boys up the hill
Nice to bump into you bro!
Francis - from experience it takes around 6 months to recover (no pain and approx 90% usage)! Speeding up the recovery/healing - physio an oxygen tent and no critical racing !
Tour de friends, yeh. They were great videos last year.
Aaaahhhh! Guitar is back👍😁 Chill man!
I consider myself an expert on the broken arms subject. Being a bad Rugby player I’ve had both my arms in plaster at the same time on three separate occasions. I’ve broken and ripped more parts of me than I’d care to remember.
But I would compare your arms more to my fingers which have screws in and ligament damage than my cast time.
Bones on the most part heal. Tendons, ligaments & muscles are your worst nightmare. You’re still young so you’ll heal fast (but your impatient so you won’t let it heal properly).
1. Do the Physio (I hated this)
2. Stay off the bike (ha ha ha)
3. Fuel & Rest. (That doesn’t mean coffee rides) super load your building blocks.
As I write this I am waiting for an MRI for the broken back... I’m starting to think I’m not cut out for sport 🤔 good luck on the recovery bruh!
And all the best to you with your recovery, Otaku, and that's the brutal thing about sport, you never know when you are going to wipe out like a surfer on a big wave. And even small falls can hurt big, so yeah, live large but be careful everywhere, the pitch or the surf or the road or even the desert.
Robb Chastain cheers, True words... but we wouldn’t change it 😂
Robb Chastain Big wave surfing was probably my worst injury. Got hit by my board, which knocked my left shoulder out of the socket. Now five pieces of titanium holding it together. Still have a torn labrum. One of these days, I'm hoping for a better repair. Absolutely no regrets about surfing years ago, though I know not to try big waves ever again.
I had a similar elbow fracture back in 2007 and had wires to join the bones. Also had the wires removed i think 6-7 months after, but more by request as the wire was restricting me straightening my arm. I can't really put a timeframe on how long it will take to feel normal but i know i was back to mountain biking 4 months after wires removed. Have no problems with it now, the only problem i had was fear of further injury but don't worry now.
Yeah man, take the time to recover fully!
You're at a crossroads my friend. If the "desire" is still there to compete then you need to get the surgery soon. The longer you wait the more likely that the results will not be as good. Another question is whether you will only need one surgery? From personal experience I know that it can take alot longer to regain full use from such injuries. Best of luck to ya!
Hope you recover fast if you get operated on again. I broke my left wrist and my right forearm in 3 places. Recovery for me must have been about a year or so to be without pain. I still have all my plates and screws in my bones though. The doctor said I didn’t have to get the hardware removed unless it was bothering me, which it isn’t and I don’t want to get operated on and potentially go through another long recovery period.
Also, don’t go pushing your body too much during recovery. I made that mistake and it delayed my bone healing.
pain injections have been offered to me in November of this year and the broken wrist scaphoid and another bone that escapes me are healed but, still sore. I was told no weight bearing for at least four months so, no press ups or boxing which is a pain. My physio however told me plenty of wrist stretches and circular movements and wall presses. Like a push up but against a wall whilst standing. My wrist is still really sore and I have lost sensation in little and ring finger on my left hand which is a pain. The only time it does not hurt is whilst riding.Plenty of exercise and when I am racing I strap it up for extra security. I have not broken an elbow or similar so cannot offer any points. Again you could race and use a support to offer protection in case of a bump but, unless you want to retire you may well have to just risk it and race
Good idea to get metalwork removed. Broke wrist over three years ago, was off bike for a few months due to healing incorrectly plus a subsequent operation where they inserted a metal pin. Still have metal in and am aware of it at every waking moment.
Got a scaphoid broken too. I had to have surgery has the doctor said it’s almost impossible to heal by itself, it’s a very fragile bone. As for the recovery, well after 4 years it still hurts when I ride MTB or even road on cobbles... might be arthritis but not sure !
Heal fast man, see you in Milano as spectator ?
Got both my elbows shattered in a race in febr this year and the material you have in your arm is I think a zuggurtung by the looks of it. I also have this in my left elbow and its fucked up like you say, for me its the tricep that have nog strength at all (biceps are 100%) and every little touch on the olecranon and tricep hurt. Got (same removal operation) my operation also planned in the next month hopefully, my surgeon (best of the country by accident) said this will make a massive difference and i'd probably be back in full swing in the future (healing process can take a while). I dont know if you already can fully extend your arm but if not first focus on that and after that try to regain some strength. First try to use gravity as weight for your extensions and afterwards maybe some weights. Have been doing a lot of research on this (and I study physiotherapy) so got a bit of a understanding on breaking your elbows now... Cheers and dont try to do to much. Feel free to ask...
Never told you this when you saw me in a cast that was still riding around town with just one hand on the bike. Alternatively I attached one tri bar on the bike so I can get more control whilst still be able to ride. I only used the tri bar only when accelerating & stopping at the lights. But cos I had one hand and one brake I had to be cautious and ride slow than normal
Rest up...heal well 👍🏻
The guitar is back! I get the racing bit but I reckon you should let the arms heal properly Francis. Put racing on hold. In the meantime ride around London and plan another adventure ride but this time in Australia with Jim and Lawrence.
I spy Dorking! So healed bone is stronger than the bone it replaces at least for a while, but it takes a long time to fully heal. Heal up, race again if you want or not if you don’t. Lots of ways to enjoy cycling.
I can thoroughly recommend some basic strength training using a Suspension trainer ( ie, TRX)...you can manage your work load easier than with weights, it's more progressive and all exercises have a large Core component!
13 weeks for my scaphoid, still clicks and aches 2 years on . “No need to operate” was the advise I got for it . Also chip the elbow bone 🍖 on the other arm in the same crash , man up was the advise I got with that 1 , ached for couple weeks then ok 👌🏻
I have pins and a plate in my elbow after i shattered the olecranon (broke collar bone at same time so recovery was an ass).
I haven't managed to build it back up to full strength and don't think I ever will (it's been 3 years and I suck at pressups). I can do weights and stuff, but its certainly weaker than my other arm. I also can't straighten it fully, but it's good enough. It also hurts if I lean on it or accidentally knock it on it on the metal plate.
Good news though, I've fallen on it about 3 times since (2x during some motorbike offroading and 1x cycle onto the concrete). It survived and didn't make it worse...
I mean ..you got titanium in your elbow now, it should be stronger than ever ;)
Hey Francis, I got hit by a car three years ago and did a similar injury, broke my elbow and had very similar operation by the looks of your X-rays.
Looks like you had a tension wire put in there?
I have not had the metal out of mine, so I would seek a 2nd opinion if it needs to come out but from memory my elbow started to feel better about 6 months or so post the injury, but i found the first winter really bad from a soreness and stiffness perspective.
What ROM do you have?
Bicep curls with low weight for high reps (20+) is actually a very good way to heal joint damage as it slowly conditions the joint without putting too much strain on it.
I completely shattered my elbow 2 yrs ago, took 3 plates and 20 screws to put it back together. Got the metal out after 4mo and it helped the pain a lot! Think it was about 6wks before it felt ok after removal. A big help with on the bike pain was to shorten the reach by 2cm(120 to 100mm). Not great for looks, but reducing tricep extension helps b/c the tricep attaches to the tip of your elbow. I still wear a elbow pad when I mountain bike or race. I have crashed on it with the pad and been totally fine, well worth the the verbal abuse...
Off 6 weeks today 2 broken wrist 35mph crash in a race. Dislocated shoulder which is further 6 weeks. Makes you wonder if its worth it! Lucky im 24 with no kids! Broken scaphoid right now had 6 weeks ina cast and rehab now up to 3 months b4 pushups dont hurt!
Yay a guitar outro
More guitar please! That's smooth. Heal up.
Francis is the sigma sports top part of a cycling club - i saw a peloton last week in this kit and wondered if it is a local
Club
it's just the shop kit!
Got no advice, just hope whatever decision you do will be the right one for a fast recovery when the times come.
Now can I do a request on outro? Anything from Janes addiction? I don't know why I think you know some of their stuff. 😎
I hardly ever remember hearing this issue of not mixing shimano and colnago pre-2008. 90s Mapei, Lampre, rabobank, -- later Milram -- all used Colnago/ Shimano. That was almost a quarter of the peloton! It all reminds me of "The Rules" nonsense.
I couldn't ride for year when i broke my elbow had the same displacement as that and also a few shattered bits to go with it also wire banding and steal rods for about 6 months before having to have them removed and shit loads of physio after that,no longer have full range of movement in that arm any longer and still hurts from time to time but not to bad
Are you going to the cycle show in Brum at the end of Sept?
sadly not!
Hope you can recover enough to race but I'm sure if not you won't stop riding, wish you well and fingers crossed
Colnago, shimano, maybe conti tyres. So Italy, Japan and Germany are back at it again.
i broke my wrist and went to a specific physio for wrist injuries, it certainly helped in my recovery
You are a very good guitar player Francis....and that strat is bonkers. I love the combination of a tele headstock on strats/jazz bass fenders. Healing vibes to you! One quick question though...what are the inserts in the bends of your fixed gear bike handlebars? Are they part of the bars, bolt on? Thanks!
They are inserts under the bars. I haven't unwrapped them to see what they're like yet though
Try kinesiotape for riding 👍🏻👍🏻
I had a rather bad accident as a teen and lost two fingers and shattered every other bone of my left hand. You know the drill, pins, needles, screws, etc. It was six months for the bones to mend including the surgery to remove the pins (screws still in place forty years later), but even then a few more months to rebuild arm strength as I hadn't been using the arm in all that time. Cycling is unaffected at this time, and really I don't remember caring what the doctor said even then. I road the bike.
I don't profess to be any kind of expert but I too think it's early days & the ride in the States has probably asked quite a lot of your healing limbs!
In my experience physio isn't a quick fix so I'd be inclined to stick with it and maybe if you haven't already done so look at running some good sports massage along side. The break is the injury but we sometimes neglect the trauma to the muscles around it and how they have reacted to the injury.
nice jersey? which brand is it?
Marco Gurriéri I think it’s from “Black Sheep”: us.blacksheepcycling.cc/collections/jerseys/products/euro-collection-mens-navy-jersey
Yah! Guitar Outro is back!!!
Just had my scaphoid and radius screwed back together. total 3 months before even being allowed to ride. In my experience time and rest is the only way to heal a bone. I know I wont be 100% for at least another 3 months let a lone racing.
I've got dura ace 9170.disc mechanical, smooth and fast it is.
Looking forward to hearing the now immortal call ... Shut up arms!!!! ... should stir a few things up on the climbs!
When I fractured my elbow it took months for it to be pain free. As for the broken wrist, lots of fapping worked well for me.
Scott McRobb lols
Are you going to ride the 2019 tour the friends too?
Nice vid Francis, Colnago/Campag.. drooool
Anyways, be careful with that arm. Might seem a bit overkill for now but how about some protection for that elbow? Just in case. Don't use painkillers unless really necessary, easy to get in the habit of caning them.
Jealous of guitar skills 🙂🙂
2:08 tasty shot of ranmore, love it when you come to my ends
damn! nice guitar at the end!!
Wicked Strat sounds👌
Currently off the Bike healing from a race crash. Broken clavicle, scapula, 7 rib fractures, punctured and deflated lung. 2nd time in 6 months for the clavicle and metalwork on both the big bones. I know someone has already mentioned age=healing time but I know one thing I overlooked was the nutrition side. Now follow the Surgeons orders and supplementing with extra VitD and Calcium. Some cross training of some sort wouldn’t go amiss to help out with bone density.
(You may all now remove the eggs from your mouths ;)
Adam Pearson vitamin d if you live in the northern regions if Europe with calcium.can help with repair. Cyclists that do.mostly road and white collar jobs often.lose upper.body bone.density. pays to do.free weights. I've known guys th at have landed hard but.no brakes and they.do resistance training.
It’s been over a year since I broke my scapula into three pieces. Fully healed bone, but it still makes grinding noises when I swing my arm overhead. I’m not convinced it will ever be 100% again...maybe around 93%?
yoog mines the same, I had a slap rear which caused the sac some damage and the orbital.head so.I.get creaking and grinding. I.could get some surgery to fix things up but it's much.better ten.years on. Glucosamine or chondroitin can help.If you have cartlidge damage.
Hey Franco. Ride and compete with your whole heart.
Injuries are nothing once you're on a bicycle.
Swimming and light weights for your upper body strength.
Plenty of jellies, calcium and zinc tablets.
Injuries make you stronger-'Wabi Sabi'.
The way this was written, I started reading at as a poem. First thought was, "this shit dont rhyme.
Who are you Ezra Pound?
Poems don't have to rhyme tho?
Francis it's not a poem.Its positive encouragement.
My cycling injuries are bust ribs and hematoma last
Year from a car collision.
Also a head injury from a pothole, Two bastard hernias
and a bicep rupture which needed two ops'.
I had a bike fit Tuesday done. And know get pedaled around
by a poledancer on a rikshaw. Bliss!
Try and stay away from x rays. Ride.
A bit late on this to comment but I broke my collar bone and have 3 pins and a metal plate fitted. It took me about 2 mths for me to feel good to cycle again. Pins and plate are still in there till this day though.
Short Water Fasting might help with the pain and the inflammation all being plant -based which you already are swimming can help specially with the arms as it is Low impact besides that beer 🍺 😉
Sup FC...greetings from USA...find a good therapist to show you how to exercise the wrist and elbow joint for better reovery...
Amputation?
Sure. You can ride and race. Just don't crash again until you're fully healed.
Seriously though. I broke my wrist a few years ago. And it took another two or three years before it started to feel normal again. Since I'm American I didn't go to a doctor because it's too expensive. And nothing was out of place. I've learned that hairline or stress fractures will knit themselves back together in about two weeks. And be completely healed in six to eight weeks. Good luck whatever you decide.
Breaking your arms doesn't seem to have effected your guitar playing. I vote for more guitar too.
Zwift initially then maybe low risk cafe riding for the 6 weeks post op...my throwaway medical opinion!

Andy talking about "dropping £2,500 on a groupset" almost made me spit my tea. I just spent around $300 on a State Bike Co steel fixed gear bike because I can't afford a bike with gears let alone any flash cycling kit lol. In other news re: your injuries... I almost permanently lost the use of my left hand after turning my wrist into a smashed bag of crisps in a motorcycle accident. I had most of the pins & plates removed after around a year because they were actually restricting the amount of movement. Once out I did experience less pain, a wee bit more movement but I still never regained full movement & weight bearing is limited. As for your elbow, I have chipped the corners off of both of mine thanks to martial arts injuries. I didn't bother getting surgery. They swell up occasionally & I can't rest them comfortably on a table for example but it's not so bad. I've broken & dislocated most toes & fingers at some point & had multiple surgeries on my thumbs but tbh the only grief I get is associated with arthritis & they hurt like hell when I ride in temperatures below around 10°C. Aside from that they're excellent. I've had a number of knee reconstructions on both knees & still need one more. The only thing that bothers them (again) is arthritis. I've had my right shoulder reconstructed & am on a waiting list to get the left one done. I did everything the physio said & theoretically I know it's fixed but there's still a psychological barrier there. Only a loss of a tiny bit of movement. I had a spinal fusion many years ago at L5S1. I won't sugar coat it, I don't remember not being in a fair amount of pain. As the years go by the joints above & below the fusion have deteriorated which makes it difficult to walk without a walking stick & sometimes I literally can't walk. The nerve damage is the strangest part as quite often it kinda feels like the messages aren't getting through so I wiggle my toes just to check. I can't describe it any better than that but it's a very weird feeling. Finally, a few years ago I gave myself a compound fracture of L1 in my spine training for roller derby lol. The worst part of this was being stuck in a full back & neck brace for 3 months. It only hurts if I do something stupid these days. Francis, I share with you this information to assure you that you'll be fine. As I try to go from #FatToFitByFifty on a fixed gear bike after being limited over the past 10-15 years to next to no physical activity due to various aspects of the stuff above I'm absolutely certain that you being a young & very fit person in general will do what I've done - work around your limitations to achieve what can be realistic. Oh yeah, love the comment around the NHS. When I lived in London I loved the NHS just as I love Medicare here in Australia. They do an amazing job with the limited resources they get while being constantly under attack by successive governments. Be well Francis, I love your videos. The Atticus motto of #NoRulesJustRide keeps me heading to the crit track to keep working towards sustainable health by fifty. Anna.
@Andy Edwards It wasn't a slight on you Andy. I'm a new cyclist & cycling fan and am genuinely staggered at how expensive things are. It's jaw dropping for me as living below the poverty line on disability it was a huge struggle to even get the bike I did. I too would've preferred to buy secondhand but there aren't that many 62cm road bikes in my price range on the market.
@Andy Edwards I'm 193cm & weigh 114kg which is 6'4" & lots of stones haha.
I've lost around 10kg so far through cycling. I'm loving it & can now ride 10km on the road, a wee bit more on the crit track but I look forward to being fit enough to join my local club & go on group rides. My aim is to be fit enough to do this by the time I'm 50.
@Andy Edwards Thanks Andy. The good people at Strava tell me that I have ridden over 100km in total in both July & August. I know that's nothing for many but I'm pretty proud considering my base fitness level was at zero. September's goal is to ride 15km non stop & get 150km for the month. Look out Chris Hall! Haha.
