"Burn, you legless f***!!!! 😂😂😂
War was amazing. It's a near masterpiece. Once again proving Reeves is a stellar storyteller and now more than ever am I psyched to see what he does with Batman visually.
Ezra Sky it is not a "near masterpiece" it is "the masterpiece". That movie is the example of everything you ever learned in film school done exactly right. And With CGI. If War for the Planet of the Apes doesn't get all of the awards I will know they are truly rigged. I still think about how they made CGI apes emote. It didn't just look like Apes playing those roles. You believed it. I loved it.
100% genuine, can you please explain to me what it was about the movie you loved so much? I found the story weak, characters flat, and just generally boring. I thought it was the worst of this trilogy. But I'm seeing a lot of people really loved it so I'm just trying to see what it is I'm missing.
I liked it but it needed more action. don't call it war if there isn't war
WORST PODCAST EVER Only children and idiots think that war is only "action", this movie had everything involved in war. Starts with a battle, then p.o.ws, then a strategic strike, then soldiers behind enemy lines, then p.o.ws on the counter side, concentration camps, battle strategy, and an end battle. Sounds like war to me dumbass.
Best part of all of these videos are the parts when Kevin and Mark just riff on stuff.
I really loved 'Dawn' - War For' is an amazing piece of filmmaking. A near masterpiece.
You forgot that Cesar has a son... Cornelius...
I'm pretty sure Caesar's son's name is Ranch.
+Psyentist:
Ranch.... or Cool Ranch?
Koba = Magneto
Cesar = Professor X
Except Xavier and Magneto are much closer friends on equal ground.
Great to hear someone recognize how great the trilogy is. The second one is probably my favorite, but this one had some truly incredible moments
Great review. Anakin still had one arm left after the battle with Obi-Wan, the one with the mechanical forearm and hand.
I love how Koba was used as a mental villain for Caesar. I remember back when it was in production people were speculating that Koba was still alive and would come back for the third, but I was like "Nah, he clearly dies." But it was brilliant that Caesar was afraid of giving into his hatred and becoming like Koba, and it haunts him throughout the film. So smart. So beautifully done.
Kevin, you're like a student that hasn't read the assigned book but skimmed it and wants to be part of the discussion. Highlands forever!
Yay! Just finished this latest episode of Fatman on Batman reviewing War for the Planet of the Apes! What did i learn? Obi-Wan had the high-ground and Charlton Heston was Moses... :P
Doktor Logan Don't forget the quick review of the first two movies Mark gave Kev.
These films aren't prequels the original series had it's own origin films with Escape, Conquest, and Battle. But good call on Andy Serkis being the modern Lon Chaney.
Depends on how you look at it.
You COULD say that Rise, Dawn, and War took place and that he is the one spoken of in the original Planet of the Apes.
The end of War could lead into the originals. Apes take over, then they grow to be the apes of the Original, even pushing more theologies.
After Escape, you could say the main three traveling to the past resets the timeline which eventually ends in Battle, in a more peaceful way with humans NOT being wiped out, nor the apes.
THIS FILM WAS AMAZING.THE FILM EXPLORES OUR LACK OF EMPATHY FOR OTHER CULTURES. KEVIN SMITH YOU GONNA NOTICE ME.
(sorry if its been mentioned already) Anakin loses his right arm and both legs, leaving him with his robot arm to pull himself up away from lava (Dooku took his other arm)... god im sad!
Also, why does Kevin's George Lucas Impression sounds like Kermit the Frog?
Maybe a job at Disney awaits him lol
This series of Apes movies is one of the last really great blockbuster franchises left. Sad to see it end.
Dawn was a masterpiece, I think Kevin needs to see it again.
My favorite thing about this trilogy is that the filmmakers continue to introduce new ideas in each movie. I also love the idea that Caesar is MLK and Koba is Malcolm X. They don't stop building a universe, they continue to give you reasons to care about both Apes and Humans
At the ending of revenge of the sith, Anakin has both legs cut off and one arm, but the only arm he has left is the cybernetic arm he got after it was cut off in the previous movie.
Friends, Professor X/Magneto in X-Men Movies. Same visions, different paths :)
Anakin had 1 arm left
he leaves him with the arm he already lost the hand on
Coach T What a dick thing to do lol
Obi-wan didn't take both arms...Anakin's metal arm was left because you can see him pulling himself up the hill just before Palpatine arrives.
It's good to hear someone say Dawn is the best one. I've been seeing so many reviewers say, "Rise was good, Dawn was okay, War is the best." I was starting to wonder if anyone else put Dawn at the top.
Kevin... just for informational sake : Kenobi slices off Anakin's legs and his one arm leaving Anakin with his one synthetic arm.
This is slightly off topic, but have either of you read "Ready Player One"? The trailer dropped today and I would love for you two to do a trailer review!
*SPOILERS* Really liked this movie, but I hated the cliched death of Caesar. He gets stabbed, then after what feels like a long trek over that might have taken weeks, he finally dies, still bleeding... had they made it so that he was treated and carried by the others, still alive to see the new land and then die, I would have liked it. Now how they handled the mortal wound felt more like how it might have been dealt with in 80s action movie with Arnold and it really clashed with the whole world they had created in the movie. Besides that, great movie
*Me during the whole video*
"Kevin, let Marc talk, goddamn!"
that video of obi wan you're referring to is by shahan reviews. the music used is from the hbo series the leftovers. Incidentally, i loved the song and had to find out where it was from, and it lead me to the leftovers. i knew any show that had such an exquisite theme would be worth watching.
Unique part on this was Ceasars son is his successor when in the original last one his sons killed by an ape..
SPOILERS
I seem to be in the minority... I didn't think it was great. I mean was good, but a let down for the trilogy. First half was great, second half seemed lazy. First off there was no real sense of war. The title conjures up this image of huge scale war for the planet, but it seemed on such a smalled scale to the first two. It was more like "Skirmish for a part of Forest of the Apes".
The whole idea of the others guys coming to take out the Colonel seemed pointless and at the end they didn't know what to do with that so just got rid of them quick with the avalanche. Now to clarify what I mean by the second half being lazy, the way their escape worked and was shown/written. First off, how did nobody see the girl walking about, you can see soldiers all over, likewise when Ceasar is on the roofs he would stand out like a sore thumb. Even worse was that it took forever to notice a mass of black shapes moving across the white snow, and they were so close! It just all seemed so silly and was avoidable. Also, the whole escape plot relied on that one soldier (the only sentry on duty apparently) being so dumb as to enter the cage alone, me and my mate both laughed at that, it was ridiculous.
The movie was about 2hrs15 long, they could of done with cutting down the whole escape nonsense, have them notice they are all gone and see a whole in ground, sure it's been done before but would of been better. Then there should of at least been a decent battle between humans and apes... WHERE WAS THE WAR? This was really a prison movie.
People love the movie and that's great, I liked it, but the second half (to me anyway) slightly tarnished an otherwise awesome trilogy. It felt like the writers responisble had left it to the last minute and had to finish their homework the night before.
For what it's worth that's just me and my friends take on it. I absolutely loved the character of Ceasar in this one, and CGI was astounding of course, it just wasn't the epic ending I had hoped for.
I swear, as much as I love Kevin Smith, it feels like neither one actually pays that close attention to the movies they watch...
What made this movie so amazing FOR ME, is there was an entire sequence that was basically my favorite movie ever. They "Great Escape"ed out of that mofo. Even talked about the paces to get the tunnel in the right spot. I was so happy during all of it.
It's always Marc who sees stuff first.
Vadar had his left robotic hand left when Obi Wan left him
Great to hear you an old-school POTA fan, Dude! More power to your elbow. :)
Marc is so good at telling & breaking down a story!
Kevin doesn't seem to remember that he briefly worked with the guy that wiped out the human race in the Apes movies... (Tyler Labine,in the Reaper pilot)
I like the way they say "the first one" and "the second one", because the official titles make no sense.
I hate when people say "This movie was better than it had any right to be." Shouldn't we expect better from our movies? There's no reason a good movie couldn't be made no matter what the premise is if you find the right way to approach the material.
I think Kenobi only got one arm and two legs, I remember his arm that has the mechanical hand is trying to pull himself up the gravely hillside to no avail...
don't forget The Walking Dead when Shane went crazy
Anakin still had his right arm so he could still manage a mechanical middle finger.
The Metal Gear Solid saga is also a great story about brotherhood & divergent ideologies.
Big Boss & Zero/ Ocelot
Solid Snake v Liquid & Solidus & Big Boss
Solid Snake / Grey Fox
I always assumed "The Clone Wars" Old Ben refers to was that the clones were always the bad guys and weren't Stormtroopers. Just some crazy 70's space clones vs Jedi.
Then the prequels happened.
I was able to watch all 3 in a marathon. I never saw the first one so seeing all together was really cool. If you have watched the others I would watch together because there is more that is passed over that meshes very nicely. Nice review.
I love you guys! Thank you for all the good work you do! 💋
It's cute you think War is the last film. You know they announced a fourth instalment to the series right? Back in October?
Is it true that there going to make part 4? If so just reboot of the if the original just re imagination with the current style.
This is the greatest show on youtube. Others need to follow this format
the Apes movies taken as a trilogy are amazing, and WAR was the movie I was most looking forward to this summer, and I wasn't let down. More than WW, Spiderman, ... Baby Driver is good, too.
Iron fist and doc strange had a friend become the villain as well
Come on Kevin, jump on the Plane of the Apes band wagon. There are so many cool moments that you've missed. They're fantastic movies!
Am I the only one who thinks the titles of the first two movies are backwards? Caeser being born should be "Dawn" and the beginning of the struggle against humans "The RIse." Convince me I'm wrong.
I wouldn't say Koba was Caesar's 'best friend' they were just friends, his best friend is obviously Maurice the orangutan.
Yo, how come no one, no one mentions how the actor who plays Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is the FIRST person to speak in the "behind the scenes." How is that not f'ing significant?! Lol....maybe I'm just being hopeful or overthinking.
I think the review is on point, but I think they got the timeline wrong. If Cornelius is alive then "a couple hundred years" have not passed and the Nova in this movie could and probably is that character from Planet of the Apes.
Kev and Marc, I'll be in the LA area in 2 weeks- what have you boys been smoking?! If it's good enough to forget Rise of the Planet of the Apes (which was actually good), maybe it will work for Green Lantern and Spawn!
Kevin is right. Tim Burton did make the best Planet of the Apes movie. I agree with you Mr. Smith.
BATTLE didn't have Dune Buggies! It had a JEEP and a damn SCHOOL BUS! WTF!?
Anakin lost only 1 arm because he dragged himself up
We get to hear Kevin Smith hear about a movie!... I want his thoughts
huge spoilers do not read if you haven't seen this movie!!!!!!
this movie was awesome just saw it last night and can't wait to watch it again!!!!
chris white how is this a spoiler?
He is worthy of Nolan's writing and Direction. Good luck with the project.
When Kevin can't remember a STAR WARS movie... he needs to stop smoking :-)
I liked the movie a lot but I thought the acts were inconsistent in what they added to the film (starts of as a drama, moves along to an action, then a thriller starring 3 gangster apes looking for trouble, then goes for a escape movie starring Jar Jar Ape, then a biblical chapter. The 2 earlier ones were more straight forward. But I guess that's how it goes when you have a lot of story to tie together.
Kevin is finally catching up
I think that people are connecting this trilogy way too close to the original film than what the creators of them intended or want to. Also, I hated that they killed Cesar at the end. It just feels like a cliche move now to kill your hero at the end of a trilogy or an adventure.
I would say "dawn of the planet" is closer to x-men first class. Caesar is like Professor X. He wants peace and coexistence. Coba is more like Eric, he thinks apes are better and wants to attack them before they get attacked.
My God, Mark is a patient person. I would have snapped on Kevin not halfway through his bullshit sidetracking.
Glad Kevin gave up the Milk. That shit will kill you as an adult. Cheese, sour cream, real cream, all good. Milk bad.
I watch every episode of this show. I love it. keep it coming fellas
Weird. Came here to listen to a review of War for the Planet of the Apes, wound up listening to Kevin and Marc rehashing the Star Wars prequels.
Also, has Kevin actually seen any of these movies?
the simian flu was not a post credit scene its how the second movie starts
wait...wait... why do a review if you haven't seen it Kevin. Would have loved to hear your opinion
Do they ever review the actual movie?
Oh no.... Kevin had too much coffee... or not enough sleep.
technically he still had his mechanical arm left at the end
So the INFINITY WAR trailer just dropped. How is this even relevant?
Will be seeing it tonight! Opening night here
ummm.... Magneto and Professor X? I really thought Marc would go there.
Magneto & Professor X = Koba & Caesar
Kevin gotta rewatch these prequels! They are excellent
i just watched it, its a masterpiece plain and simple. I am drained emotionally from watching it. The second one didnt do it for me.
Recommend Crispin Glover as The joker and Doctor Who >.>
Don't forget to watch The Undependables on The Hollywood Costello Channel
Obi wan took off his legs and one arm his mechanical arm was still left he used to crawl up the hill
"now you made me actually want to go see it"... uh, you don't want to see it?
Such a great trilogy, can't pick a favorite of the three.
Not be be THAT person but the first drug does both repair your brain and make you smarter.
Who else found out about Kevin because of call of duty infinite warfare?
Koba and Ceasar weren't pals in 1, Koba is the lifelong test ape that gets the first of the second wave of the test drug
Rocket is his ape rival/buddy in the first 1
Ginkgo Biloba, Kevin... Ginko Biloba...
Epic Lucas impression! hahaha
both legs and his other hand only his robot hand was left lol cause that was the one he had his lightsaber in he when he jumped .
I love you two guys, but please both watch the movie. I watched to the end and I just am not hyped about what other credible places where hype.
Kevin! You remember the one with Mark Wahlberg? Lol
love your reviews marc!

Brilliant.
When exactly did this show go from a interview-style podcast with legends of the comic book world(seriously those Grant Morrison and Neal Adams interviews are the best podcasts I've ever heard) to yet another RUclips series slobbering over the latest Hollywood release? As a Hollywood filmmaker AND comic book fan, Kevin Smith is uniquely placed to secure such amazing, in-depth conversations with the likes of Mark Hamill and Denny O' Neil. I wouldn't mind videos like these if they were still accompanied by great interviews but as it stands I have to unsubscribe. I'm a long time supporter of Smodcast and Kevin Smith but he continues to phone it in and his audience is shrinking accordingly. Don't make a show of being a fan of Batman and comics when you're nearly a decade late on finishing your own Batman comic. Just two cents from a long time listener and supporter.
Roll Tide 93 its evolution babyyyyy
love those Grant Morrison interviews, the Mark Hamill ones were great too, very relistenable these ones, not so much.
I like the Fatman on Batman videos because I don't care enough about movies to actually go to them. This way I usually find out about which ones are worth seeing, which sets of movies I never saw that I might want to binge on (think I saw first original Planet of the Apes movie way back when Roddy was in them) and which ones I can forget. I only watched a few of the interviews when he was doing them, most likely because I don't read comic books.
Why is Marc always sweaty? Get this man some AC!
So the actual review starts about 13 minutes in....Focus guys, focus.
