I was part of the crew that cleaned out the soundstage. Whatever props we found left over we either took to keep for ourselves, or it was thrown away.(the famous double dare giant red shoe was brought over to Twister's office, where I heard they eventually just got rid of it) It was definitely a weird experience stripping down the studio having grown up with Nick as a kid.
I just wished SO BAD that they would have tours inside :((( besides, there are so many people missing the old nickelodeon, they should totally bring it back :(
The disposition of the Slime Geyser is unknown. The best guess is that it (along with the Nickelodeon sign) was junked. The only known surviving artifact is the time capsule, which is now located at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort (the Nick Hotel).
Interest in the types of programs taped at the studios dropped after the year 2000. The number of people visiting the studios for tours also dropped way off even on days when the rest of Universal Studios was packed. Celebs needed to star in programs resisted relocating from southern California to Orlando. Faced with all this (and maybe other issues not made public), Nickelodeon probably felt that the studios had run their course and decided to close up shop and exit Orlando.
The reason why I wanted to go to the Studios so badly when I was younger was because I loved Nick, I loved the shows they filmed there, and all those people were always having fun. When Spalt! ended no other shows where being filmed there IMO having many kids walk by it thinking "What's this?", looking at it then leavin.
Hey Ted Tedd, Amazing Video! I may be really late but I actually went to Nickelodeon studios back on grand opening day, got to see double dare, it was a very cool experience. And I still went back after!
@animegal2686 One of the reasons that Nickelodeon Studios closed is because very few people stopped by to visit, take the tour and go to the store....even on the days when the rest of Universal Studios was packed. Because of the lack of visitors, it just didn't make any sense to turn the building into a museum or anything that had to do with Nickelodeon.
They now produce there cartoons in Burbank California at the Nicktoons Studios, and they also film some shows there. they also have a studio in new york which is where the channel is aired from and there main offices are.
Im from the philippines Ive always watched nick and was excited when it was first launched in asia , never experienced going to nick studios. When i was a kid i always dreamed about going there. The bluemen group just crushed my child hood -_-
The article being referenced is a part of wikipedia's GUTS listing. Keep in mind that Stage 21 was not a part of Nickelodeon Studios. Nick rented it from Universal so they could stage GUTS. I remember reading that Stage 21 was being used as storage space so it is available. I don't think Nickelodeon is going to try to reclaim the old Nickelodeon Studios. If Nick does go back to producing multiple game shows, it will probably happen in California.
@gsnfan1416 The buildings are still there. They are being used for other purposes. FSN, Blue Man Group & Sun Sports are the primary organizations that use the complex for various functions. Inside, there are bits & pieces of Nickelodeon to be found (someone said that restrooms still have the orange "splat" on the floors).
The idea behind Nickelodeon Studios was to create a Hollywood on the east coast. Things started out strongly, but the wheels soon fell off the bus. Interest in the live action shows produced at the studios dwindled. The number of visitors to the complex tanked even on days when Universal was packed. Celebrities (needed to star in shows) resisted moving from Los Angeles to Orlando.
The buildings are still there (see the video). There are parts of the buildings (not open to the public) that haven't changed since Nickelodeon left. The current users have left things as-is. Even the public can see a few things from Nickelodeon in the general areas.
Nickelodeon had been gone for 18 months before Universal announced that Blue Man Group was going to use part of the complex. If it wasn't for BMG and other organizations, chances are the buildings would have been demolished and the land used for other purposes.
@thehahacac According to information found on nickcontestants, com, auditions were held for BrainSurge in January and continue this month. So it looks like a 3rd season is in the works.
The time capsule is supposedly located just outside the main entrance of the hotel. As I understand it, the rule about not being able to enter unless you are staying is for the safety of all the children inside.
The only soundstage the blueman group has is 18 (the slightly larger one), 19 is vacant and was used for my famlys got GUTS training the viewing tube thingys are still there with seats but are usedfor storage the dressing rooms are still there (and used by the blue man group) and the green room is too it was actually renovated for my familys go GUTS. Unfortanatly the gak kitchen was removed for a conseccesion stand. However not one part of the 2nd or 3rd floors have been touched the control room
yes. thats at the opening to the park. they totally got rid of the geyser, and the 1992 time capsule was dug up and re-buried at Nickelodeon Hotels. It is to be opened in 2042.
Nickelodeon had been gone from the complex for about a year before B.M.G moved in. Nick and Nick alone made the decision to leave Orlando. B.M.G. really had nothing to do with it. The time capsule was moved to the Nickelodeon Suites (Nick Hotel) in Orlando. It is reported to be right beside the main entrance to the building (double sliding glass doors).
I always wanted to goto the old Nick Studios back in the early 90s but my dad always told me "It'll be there when you're older.." no comment on that. But LOTHT was my favorite show in the afternoons. Several years back I got someone on the Nick-GAS production team was nice enough to send me some LOTHT Signage. It's just collecting dust now so I was going to sell it on eBay and made a video that I've posted as a response here. Damn the Blue Man Group...
The buildings weren't sold. Nickelodeon closed the facility and the buildings sat unused for about 18 months before Universal Studios announced that Blue Man Group would be moving in. Since then, other groups have set up shop in other parts of the buildings. While the complex is no longer "Nickelodeon Studios", it is still there. If it wasn't for BMG and the other organizations, Universal could have easily leveled the buildings and used the land for other purposes.
Studio 18 is the only one being used the main building and sound stage 19 are abandoned and and still have the old murals inside (the wild Thornberrys and Ren and Stimpy.) I don't know about studio 21
I remember coming home from elementary school every day and watching Slime Time Live, All That, Rugrats, it is sad. The last time I was there they just finished painting it green. Now they painted over it again and did they remove the 1992 time capsule? If they did I'll be pissed!
I wish someone could shoot a quick video or a few pictures of the time capsule at the Nick Hotel. Wikipedia would then be forced to acknowledge what many people already know. On the other hand its nice knowing that wiki isn't always the final answer on all things!
@chattychar The slime geyser belonged to Nickelodeon. Had it been left behind, it would have been considered abandoned and Universal, most likely, would have removed it, during the renovations to the complex. Maybe the geyser could have been moved to the Nickelodeon Suites Resort (the Nick Hotel) just like the time capsule was.....but.....for whatever reason.....that didn't happen.
All That and Kenan & Kel were never filmed at the Nickelodeon Studios at Orlando, Flordia. We took your shows here in Hollywood, CA. :) (It was filmed at 'Nickelodeon at Sunset.' It's pretty much where all live-action shows are filmed now. All I remember you guys had were My Brother & Me and Clarissa Explains it All and every other game show.) Still sucks though :\
Nickelodeon's target audience lost interest in game shows, but wanted more scripted shows and animation. Because actors wanted to stay close to Hollywood CA, Nickelodeon could not schedule any shows for the Orlando facility. Nickelodeon also purchased an animation facility in Burbank CA for cartoon production. Nickelodeon soon realized that the time had come to close Nickelodeon Studios and focus on the types of programs that their viewers wanted.

i was ther in 2004 i looked in and saw like ren and stimpy on the walls and bleachers and stuff and the gesyer wasnt going or anything. it was sad to see my childhood fade away into the poo man group
The closing of Nickelodeon Studios was mostly due to changes in the types of programs that the public wanted to watch. Game shows were out while scripted programs & cartoons were in and neither format was suitable for the Orlando facility for reasons discussed both here and on other Nickelodeon Studios tribute videos. Disney had nothing to do with the closure.
before the blue man group was there, was the nickelodeon building still there? cuz i went here in june when the blue man group was new. i'll be so mad if i just missed nickelodeon stuiods
@animegal2686 On the other hand.....if there was a need for another facility like the one in Orlando.....Nickelodeon could always either build (or buy) one in Southern California. But right now....it seems to make more sense for Nick to lease studio facilities in and around the Los Angeles area....rather than build a general production studio complex and own it outright.
Nickelodeon closed the Studios for several reasons: 1) A lack of interest in the shows that were produced there. 2) A severe drop-off in the number of people who stopped by for tours even on the days when the rest of Universal was packed. 3) The inability to persuade celebrities to relocate from southern California to Orlando so new programs could be produced there. Nickelodeon soon found itself with a top notch studio complex, but nothing to do inside of it.
If you have an account on Nick's website, there might be a hidden link. I understand that there are message boards that members can post on. My feeling is that if there were enough demand, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and other networks that appeal to kids would produce shows like Guts. Right now, animation seems to be popular among Nick's core audience, but things change and by 2011 there could be enough demand for live action shows again. Who knows?
The reason(s) that the Slime Geyser was not moved to the Nick Hotel is(are) not known. A RUclips friend suggested that the geyser may have fallen into disrepair.
Because there is no known picture of the time capsule's new location, wikipedia will not allow statements, claiming that the time capsule is at the hotel, to appear in any listing. Oh well, it looks like youtube trumps wikipedia on this subject!
Sun Sports, Blue Man Group and FSN now use various parts of the buildings for their operations. The idea of turning the facility into a museum has been raised before. The problem with that lies in one of the reasons that caused Nickelodeon to vacate in the first place. Interest in game shows tanked in the late 90's and kids (still mostly "90's Kids") stopped visiting the facility & store. Under those circumstances, it made no sense for Nick to convert the place into a museum.
Universal Studios need the buildings to generate money. Towards the end, the buildings just sat there and very few people stopped by to visit. No visitors = no money. There was nothing to indicate that turning the buildings into a museum would attract more visitors.
Nope, I have no connection with Universal Studios, Blue Man Group, any of the other organizations that use the facility or Nickelodeon. The information comes from: Wikipedia & Josh Yawn (youtuber "cmonfwank") Josh produced that amazing Nickelodeon tribute video and he also took many behind the scenes photos when he returned to Universal to work on "My Family's Got Guts". The photos & text are a must read for anyone interested in Nickelodeon Studios. The link is on his youtube page.
i just so happen to walk past there 2 days a week. You actually skipped the only remaining part of the old Nickelodeon. If you were to go into the bathrooms which are open to the public by the stairs, its all oginal. With slime on the floor and everything.
ACtually, Blue Man Group had NOTHING to do with it's closing, Blue Man Group actually saved the building! If no one bought the building or had intrest I'm sure Universal would take it down to make space for new rides. Blue Man Group isn't evil it's actaully an amazing company!
I was part of the crew that cleaned out the soundstage. Whatever props we found left over we either took to keep for ourselves, or it was thrown away.(the famous double dare giant red shoe was brought over to Twister's office, where I heard they eventually just got rid of it) It was definitely a weird experience stripping down the studio having grown up with Nick as a kid.

heeey I completely agree with you, though our childhood stuff are not gone! there's still plenty of stuff inside the building :((
appropriate background music!

I miss nick studios I went on a tour in the gamelab. What are they doing to the former gamelab at the old nick studios. Are they gutted it out.
Did that studio once belonged to such game shows like "Double Dare" and "Legends of the Hidden Temple"?
Do you have me and my friends Pilot?
Actually the first seasons of each were in fact filmed in Orlando.
@thehahacac
BrainSurge originated from Hollywood Center Studios.
Nickelodeon on sunset in California makes live action shows like icarly and victorious the animation studios is in Burbank cali
