- Electric trailer brakes are a type of braking system that uses an electric current to activate a braking mechanism that applies brake pads or disks to the trailer wheels. The electric current is provided by the truck through a wire that connects to a magnet in the brake backing plate. The magnet is attracted to the drum face and causes the brake shoes to push out against the drum, slowing down the trailer.
