Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific Uboat Missions Type XVIII Uboat.
The Type XVIII U-boat was a project for an attack boat using the Walter Propulsion System. Two boats (U-796 and U-797) were laid down in 1943, but construction was canceled in March 1944.
There were three projects for boats using the Walter propulsion in Germany during the war. Those were the Type XVII, the Type XVIII and the Type XXVI, the Type XXI was created on the basis of the Type XVIII after it became clear that the Walter propulsion wasn't yet sufficiently developed to be used in service so the Type XXI and Type XXIII electro boats were developed as a intermediary solution until the Walter boats were ready. A Type XXIII boat did become the last U-Boat to sink enemy ships in combat, when it sank two freighters late on the 7th of May 1945.

I recently started playing Silent Hunter 4 again and started playing the U-Boat campaign. And I acquired this Walter boat. At first I was really disappointed because it didn't have a deck gun or aft torpedo tubes. And I was disappointed with its performance because I thought it was supposed to have high speed capability submerged. But I just didn't see the h202 switch at the bottom of the screen LMAO! Once I figured out how to engage the Walther turbine propulsion I was like a little kid with a new toy LMAO! This thing's top speed submerged is amazing. I can only imagine that if the Nazis could have commissioned these boats and mass-produce them it would have had a huge effect on the outcome of the war. But just like many of their advanced Technologies they didn't produce them in time to make a difference in the outcome of the war.
I wrote this in case anyone is still playing SH4 in 2013. I do... and love it !

I was reading about the submarine recently. The diesels overheated frequency so had to be severely derated, so surface speed was slower, and charging took a lot longer. The subs were assembled in a way that is very modern, with sections built that had all their equipment installed before the sections were mated together, but quality control was such that the sections didn't always mate together. They were largely built with slave labour, prisoners of war. Still a brilliant design, and copied by others post war.

I hope one day we'll see a new Silent Hunter as good as III-IV. Not like that garbage V. I doubt many publishers would fund such a niche genre in this day and age of immense developmental budgets. Perhaps crowdfunding could work. Star Citizen has 35+ million. Having a sub-sim have that huge a budget would be amazing.
It would have to be an indie studio for sure. More and more, the major publishers stick to their "develop and release [Fallout X, or Modern Warfare X, or Battlefield X]" money farming business strategy. "Sprinkle with a trickle flow of $30 DLC" and allow to marinate for two years.

Nach neueren Erkenntnissen kann man heute davon ausgehen das es noch andere U-Boote ab 1943 gebaut wurden, die allerdings zur Absetzung benutzt wurden. In dem Buch von Johannes Jürgenson "Das Gegenteil ist wahr"

In diesem Buch wird auf Seite 192 Die verschwundenen U-Boote beschrieben, Zitat: Das ab 1943 neue U-Boot-Typen gebaut
wurden, die wesentlich leistungsfähiger waren und die fast beliebig lange getaucht bleiben konnten und sich somit dem feindlichen Radar entzogen, das hauptsächlich für die Verluste bis 1943 verantwortlich war. Die bisherigen U-Boottypen beider Seiten waren eigentlich nur Tauchboote gewesen, die wie Schiffe operierten und nur zum Angriff tauchten. Die Blei-Säure-Batterien der Elektromotoren ermöglichten keine lange Tauchfahrt, weil sie über die Dieselmotoren immer wieder aufgeladen werden mussten - und das ging nur über Wasser oder beim Schnorcheln mit verräterischer Abgasfahne.
Möglich wurde der technische Durchbruch unter anderem durch die Entwicklungen des Kieler Chemikers Professor H. Walter, dessen Name im Zusammenhang mit der Absaugetechnik für Fluggeräte schon auftauchte. Dieser hatte seit 1933 an einem neuen Antriebskonzept geforscht, das auf Wasserstoffperoxid-Basis (H202) arbeitet, womit hohe Energiemengen kontrolliert freigesetzt werden können. Das System erwies sich als so effizient, daß es für den Antrieb der V1 und A4/V2 verwendet wurde, sowie in den neuen U-Bootklassen ab 1943. Das erste U-Boot mit WalterAntrieb, das „V 80", erreichte schon bei der Probefahrt 26 Knoten unter Wasser. Das war fast das dreifache der damals üblichen 9 Knoten! Auch neuartige hydrodynamische Rumpfformen wurden eingesetzt. Außerdem entwickelte Walter einen neuartigen U-Boot-Schnorchel, der extrem lange Tauchzeiten erlaubte. Dieser war mit einem nicht-reflektierenden Überzug versehen, so daß er auch beim Schnorcheln vom Radar nicht entdeckt werden konnte. Admiral Dönitz schrieb später: „Durch diese Typen war die Überlegenheit, die die feindliche Abwehr dem U-Boot gegenüber seit 1943 gewonnen hatte und die im wesentlichen auf der Überwasserortung mit Hilfe kürzester Wellen beruhte, ausgeschaltet. Das U-Boot blieb für die Ortung nicht feststellbar - unter Wasser, operierte in schützender Tiefe und griff auch nur aus ihr heraus an." Es scheint außer dem bekannten Walter-Antrieb eine weitere revolutionäre Technik zum Einsatz gekommen zu sein, die dem Walter-Antrieb noch überlegen war. Ein Marinesoldat, der auf U-Booten Dienst tat, bezeugte 1980, daß ab 1943 ganz neue U-Boottypen zur Verfügung standen: „In den Krupp-werken haben wir diese Boote übernommen. Es waren 3.000-Tonnen-Boote, und das sind ganz schön große Boote gewesen, mit 50 Mann Besatzung, zwei Turbinensätze mit je 12.000 PS. Betrieben wurden sie mit einer Masse, welche im Sauerstoff oxidiert wurde. Es waren drei Komponenten, welche oxidiert mit Seewasser vermischt, aufbrausten wie eine Brause. Diese Oxidation-Seewasser-Verbindung wurde unter enormen Druck, 600 atü, in die Turbinen geblasen. Von dort wurde das Gemisch über eine Ableitung durch einen Regenerator geführt, dort geschieden und der rückgewonnene Sauerstoff wieder ins Boot zurückgeführt.
Die verbliebene Substanz wurde durch eine Hohlwelle zur Schiffsschraube geführt. Dadurch, daß wir den Nebel durch eine Sogwirkung von den Schiffsschrauben weggenommen hatten, konnten wir so schnell fahren. Die Schiffsschrauben konnten besser arbeiten, weil sie keine Sogwirkung gehabt haben. Ja, und da haben wir 75 Seemeilen unter Wasser gemacht. Mit dem Sauerstoff, der zurückgewonnen wurde, hätte wir jahrelang unter Wasser fahren können. Es war alle zurückzuführen auf den Treibstoff. Der Treibstoff war in Flaschen, diese waren mit einem Druckstempel versehen. Die Substanz war so ähnlich wie Salz oder Karbid in ihrer Struktur. Diese wurde in Kammern zurückgeführt, welche verstellbar waren. Die Menge, welche eingeführt
wurde, betrug höchstens einen halben Fingerhut, welche auf die Turbinen aufgeblasen wurden." Der Aktionsradius dieser U-Boote, welche „das bestgehütete Geheimnis der Kriegsmarine" genannt, wurde mit 12 - 15.000 Seemeilen angegeben, je nach Treibstoffvorrat. Nach Auskunft des U-Boot-Kenners Professor Michael Salzwerk konnten die U-Boote der XXI-Klasse, wozu das obengenannte offenbar gehörte, „ohne aufzutauchen von Deutschland nach Japan fahren."
Was ein Marinesoldat als technischer Laie hier beschreibt, ähnelt verblüffend einer in einem vorigen Kapitel beschriebenen Absaugetechnik für Flugzeuge. Diese funktioniert nämlich in Flüssigkeiten so gut wie in Gasen, und die ersten Forschungen wurden mit Wasser als Medium gemacht. Auch die genannte hohe Tauchgeschwindigkeit von 75 Knoten ist eigentlich nur mit Hilfe der Absaugetechnik vorstellbar, die offenbar sowohl für den Rumpf als auch speziell an den Schrauben eingesetzt wurde.
Diese Angaben des Marinesoldaten werden interessanterweise bis ins Detail von Wilhelm Landig in seinem Roman „Wolfszeit um Thule" bestätigt. Da Buch 1980 erschien, muß er die Information direkt von dem Soldaten oder anderen Eingeweihten bekommen haben, denn die Veröffentlichung von Haarmann stammt von 1983. Das Buch von Landig beschreibt in Romanform die deutsche Absetzungsbewegung so detailliert, daß man annehmen muß, Landig hat aus internen Quellen schöpfen können.
Die oben beschriebene U-Boottechnik ist jedenfalls so revolutionär, daß sie die Überlegenheit auf See hätte wiederherstellen können, wäre sie früher gekommen. Die neuen U-Boottypen unterlagen selbstverständlich der höchsten Geheimhaltung. Das oben beschriebene U-Boot, auf dem der Marinesoldat Dienst tat, trug die Nummer U 558. Es wurde vor Island vom Kommandanten, Kapitän zur See Schermann, versenkt, nachdem es wegen eines Maschinenschadens manövrierunfähig geworden war. Die Mannschaft ging in Gefangenschaft, und nur so wurde der Bericht überhaupt bekannt. Hätte das Boot mit seinem Verband, der von Korvettenkapitän Moehle geführt wurde, wie geplant Argentinien erreicht, dann hätten wir nie von seiner Existenz erfahren. Denn diese Nummer U 558 gehörte vorher einem Boot der VII C-Klasse, das sich am 20. Juli 1943 nach einem Fliegerangriff vor Nordspanien selbst versenkt hatte, während die beschriebene Übernahme des neuen Bootes Ende 1943 erfolgte. Man gab offenbar den neuen Booten zur Tarnung Nummern bereits gesunkener Boote. Zitat Ende.

the type XXI and XXIII were not Walther boats. Of the Walther concept only one boat was build and tested, it never saw production. The XXI and XXIII had large capacity batteries for submerged cruising plus a snorkel to use its diesels when submerged.
XXI and XXIII was based on the XVIII Walter u boat. There are 4 Walter designs v 80, XVIIA,XVIIB and the XVIII which didn't make it, but the design was heavily used on the XXI
I don't think the German navy had a Type XVIII (eighteen) submarine. What you show is a Type XXI (twenty one) type U-boot. These were the most advanced subs of WWII and post war subs of the Western Allies and Russia were based on these designs. Further the Type XXI was not a Walther Boot. The original Walther boat had a hydrogene engine which was unreliable. The Boat that is open to visitors (I think in Bremen) is a Type XXI. The XXI was faster under water than on the surface, 17 knots!!!!!!!!!

chloe7829, the Walther U -Boats didn't had Hydrogene engines , They where driven by Steam Turbines, the Boats had Hydrogene Peroxide fuel in plastic bags outside the Pressure Hull, but most important the Boat had an hydrogen Peroxide Katalysator to break down the mixture , this Katalysator cause the fuel mixture generates Temperatures up 2000 degree Celsius cooled by Water that generates Steam and drive the Turbine. . That causes several "Problems" to solve , the Process generate also Oxygen what had an impact on Lubricants and other Materials , fire in reaction with Lubricants , corrosion on Materials steel copper and so on so they must contain the production of Oxygen and bring it over board , the exhaust was clean Co2 gas . The Walther Boats can run up to 27 Knots in submerged condition for a brief period of Time but the German Administration don't want the new Technic still holding to out dated Type seven Boats, then they came up with the Type XXI as so called Electro U- Boats and the Walther Boats are History. After the War it was the same Problem the Administration go for the Fuel Cell by the time it was Theoretical , The Walther technic was a proven concept but had no major supporters , I guess with the development of the Fuel Cells you got more money to earn.

The V-80 submarine was launched in 1940, April 14.
It's the one that broke 28 knots.
The boat in the video is a Type XVIII.
The boat was never built, due to issues with the Walter turbines and a shortage of hydrogen peroxide.
Instead, the plans were reworked to use the hydrogen peroxide tanks as extra battery space. This, amongst other changes, produced the design known as the Type XXI.

Read this post today (jan21)... Here some Infos: The Kriegsmarine built in 1943 two type 18 boats - walter turbine / diesel engines, under water Speed 24 knots, surfacespeed 15,5 knots. Not finished behause all recources were needed for the type 21 boats.

I want to see a Silent Hunter 6 featuring modern subs such as the Seawolf, LA class, Ohio, Typhoon, etc.. and a soundtrack similar to the Hunt for Red October film and, of course, the "Singing...I thought I heard singing, sir." Now that would be epic and probably the best since SH4.

Two where laid down but never completed and yes the XVIII was a real design using the Walter Turbine to give a submerged speed of 25 Knots, they also featured a snorkel and the endurance underwater according to specs on range submerged was unheard of.
One did make a war patrol but didn't find any ships to sink

...oooookey, I searched the forums and what I found is that this sub has no stern tubes (only frontal tubes for torpedoes), has no deck gun, but has this "Need for Speed-like Nitro" the Walter Turbine, which when submerged will let you obtain a speed of aprox 20 knots (yes twenty knots underwater !!!) but it consumes more fuel ofcourse.
Depending on your play style you can choose to switch your current sub for this one or you can keep the old one and upgrade it further.

Only one Uboat with a Walter drive was build and tested in the harbor of Hamburg or Bremen. That type never went into production.
The XXI was based on the XVIII blueprints; hence they look similar.
Nice clip of a Type XX1. An over rated design that did not live up to it's promise and only saw real service in the Soviet Navy... as they never cared much for their lives of their sailors.

This sub was let out a few months before the sub ended... This sub was so head of it time that if it would have been built more recently in masses. The Atlantic would have been theres to rule...
Nope. The War of the Atlantic was lost by the end of 1942. New ships were being built faster than they were lost and the number of escorts was growing as fast as the Uboots were being lost. The Type XX1 had numerous faults, was easily detectable by ASDIC and still had to surface to send and recieve radio messages so it was vulnerable at those times. Also, later in 1943, RADAR had advanced so much that a Uboot's snorkel could be detected. This sub was the first true submarine but it had a lot of problems to overcome before being an effective one.

How do I get new submarines ? I am on my 3rd patrol in the german campaign and still didn't have the possibility to buy new ones. Or I have to wait till later years ?

On the port screen, click on the telephone to "request transfer" once you've been on a couple of patrols in your Type IX the option will become available to "transfer" to a Walther boat. It also depends on what year it is in the game, so if you take the later start option for the U-Boat missions (43 or 44 I think) the option will be available after a couple of missions. This is also how you get different subs in the American campaign as well.
