In the UK they've straight up tried getting nonverbal autistics to work and took away ESA because the people there can lift a kettle and remember three words.
My dad, who is able bodied still gets the benefit while I lost mine, just because I speak normal time and time again people just assume I'm able enough when I'm far from it, example I can't live alone and can't function without care.
There was someone who had 3 months to live and multiple disabled and autistic people in that interview place
Funny story, the surveyor asked someone with DOWN SYNDROME how long they've had down syndrome and when they got it.
I was holding back laughter when either his carer or himself asked the surveyor(don't remember)"idk what do you think!?"

My friend also lives in the UK and is autistic. His main problem is being with others and talking with them, so he hasn't had a job for I think 4 years now? His social worker is just sitting on her butt sipping tea and if she appears for once treats him like a toddler, which ofc makes him pissed.
To Also get any disability money ,they ofc said what his struggles are and his mom probably made it sound a bit worse. Originally his mom wanted to make things sound like he isn't able to do anything without anyone to get more money ,but my friend didn't wanna sound just worthless so his mom didn't do that.

I lived my whole life with my mother who is ableist. She doesn't think she is, but she is. My mother made me scared of being disabled in any way. That she'd be disappointed in me if I was. When I was young many of my teachers brought up to my mother that I maybe dyslexic, and she told them that her kid wasn't retarded. I went through school thinking I was the stupidest kid in the world. I couldn't keep up and that I had no reason for that.
In the end I developed serve PTSD, not from that but other things in my childhood. From middle school onward I stopped sleeping all that much. I lived in a constant state of fear that made no sense until I graduated high school. When I couldn't take not being able to sleep and not being able to feel safe anymore I brought up to my mother that I would like to go to a therapist or something. You'd have thought I killed someone. She said I could if I could get there. Which I couldn't because I couldn't drive. At this time period, everything was sending me into an episode, but I didn't know why, or even what was happening.
Eventually, I went to college to get away from my mom for other reasons. I lived each day with less than 2 hours of sleep, barely existing. I met my boyfriend up there and he convinced me to go to the college therapist. I felt like a terrible person for doing it. I kept telling myself that I was only lazy and that if I just picked myself up by my boot straps, I'd be ok. After about a month or so, we were kicked out of dorms because of Covid. I cried, because I was honestly scared to go back. I ended up going to live with my boyfriend and his family.
I am here now. I started seeing a new therapist and etc. While, I knew how bad my PTSD, I now see it. Most days I am too scared to leave my room because in my mind I am not at my boyfriend's house. I have PTSD episodes multiple times during the day, to which I still don't know what triggers them. Going outside is hard, because I am frightened to have an episode in public. And other issues I can't think off the top of my head. I don't currently work because of this.
Every time I get to the point of understanding myself and why I can't work, my mother somehow puts me back to square one. Whether it is in my head or in real life. In my head I can hear her calling me a bum and a piece of shit for not working, all I need to do is work. While in real life when I see her, she calls me a bum and that if my boyfriend's family just made me have to pay them 200$, I'd get off my lazy ass. Some days I break down, because I think she is right. I have good days, even if there isn't a lot, but on those days I feel I could work a normal job. On the bad days I also break down because I give nothing to society if I can't work. That there is no reason for my to live if I can't work and make money.
I will say my boyfriend is completely different from my mom. He knows and cares about my disability. Anytime I break down from knowing I won't be able to work, he is like ,"Ya, I don't expect you to. You can barely leave the house even if I am with you." He honestly is the best and I don't deserve him. Honestly his whole family are saints. I've been here for 4 years, and not much has changed. While I still go to therapy and take meds, the symptoms hasn't gotten better. I am trying to get SSI so I am less of a financial burden. But, if I was at my mother's or any where else, I would have been kicked out by now. Especially, since I couldn't get and keep a job. I might cook, and clean, but I know that isn't enough.

The way SSI is has hurt my family so much. Both my mother and my grandmother have Fibro, and I myself am autistic. Thankfully, I was raised in an environment that was mindful of me for most of my life, but most people are still convinced that what they're suffering from doesn't exist. My mother was actually considering working a job at the DG down the street to make ends meet, even though she's almost unable to MOVE on a bad day. Sadly, until the difference between inability and not caring are made clear to the majority of people, It's unlikely anything will change. This is a very important message, and more people need to hear it.

I'm physically and mentally disabled but have to work in a factory despite how miserable I am. I had the muscle removed from my foot due to cancer as a young kid and it was an experimental long process. So SSI won't recognize my disability because "I can still walk on it." The doctor's only salutation was to throw me on lyrica and Tramadol and just say don't get addicted or fail a drug test (stuff like everything beagles could make me fail a drug test. I will get flagged and screwed for the rest of my life.) I also have ASD and Bipolar but was diagnosed well into adulthood and I just can't afford not to work so I could possibly get SSI. Because "If I can work then I don't need it." Dispite only working because I needed money and couldn't afford not to work while I worked though finding out what was wrong with me mentally. So thank you for explaining this.

I'm mentally and physically disabled, but my dad won't listen to my diagnosis. I was diagnosed recently at the doctor's, but he won't believe me. I was trying to sign up for medical leave at my job due to my inability to work without passing out and he shut that down immediately saying "you can work you're just being lazy. you don't need that. that's not what you need. that's not for you. it's for people with real disabilities." the most ironic thing is he works with disabled people as his job and yet he's being unintentionally ableist to me and has been all my life. Some of his favorite phrases are "You just need to exercise and eat healthier.", "You just need to be on a schedule.", and "You just need to pull yourself together." I've tried to tell him all these years that "I think I have something wrong with me." but he never listened. I was recently diagnosed with PTSD and that explains a lot of the experiences I've had and have been having. For the last few years or so I've had nightmares about him almost every single night or time that I sleep. If it's not about him then it's a nightmare about something else. I have a hard time working because something can send me into an episode and I don't even know what it is. I can't safely drive when that happens let alone work. It can cause me to disassociate and I was lucky enough this last time to have a friend with me at the time who could take over the driving because it was getting really dangerous. I could have died. WE could have died. My dad recently told me "Depression is just a mindset you have to try to work out of." and I couldn't be more appalled. Having a positive outlook/attitude can help sure, but it can't cure the literal fucking chemical imbalance in my brain. There's way more to it than that and almost any competent person knows that. I can't believe he's qualified to work with mentally and physically disabled people considering how he treats his own child. It's insanity.

I was born to raging capitalist parents. Because of that, I didn't even know I was autistic until I was 23 years old even though I had medium support needs. From early childhood, I was gaslit into thinking that things like my limited speech, sensory sensitivities, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, meltdowns, etc. were all natural consequences of being lazy and not trying hard enough to develop early childhood skills.
I legitimately thought that the reason my classmates could have full conversations while I could only speak around a dozen words with immense strain was because they were trying harder than me. I didn't realize until adulthood that speaking was not supposed to cause strain, stress, and fatigue. I grew up with so much guilt around this. I legitimately thought I failed my parents by not trying hard enough. It took me a long time before I was able to overcome that mindset enough to even be willing to question if I had a disability.
I had to learn how to function without support because my family and society all believe that if I pull myself up by the bootstraps, I can somehow cure my autism through sheer willpower. It's still a struggle to explain to coworkers, friends, and roommates that I am not lazy, antisocial, or overdramatic and that if I power through my fatigue to fit their standards of normalcy, I will end up in the hospital. I've experienced so much violence for being disabled by people who think I can magically overcome it or that my disabilities don't exist because I am not fully nonverbal. It baffles me how people can think that this system that we use to run our society is in any way smart or efficient.

I have social anxiety ,there were pretty much always signs of it ,just the older I got the worse it got.
Not being able to go to work experience when I was at school just once again showed me it got worse (had to do two , one in 9th grade and 10th grade) because before while uncomfortable I was still able to go.
Already though , I never gone grocery shopping alone (even if I go with someone and it's a big store with lots of people I feel close to getting a panic attack ) , I couldn't take any public transportation , couldn't go to doctors, couldn't pick up the phone. Everything made me feel anxious and scared ,usually like going into a panic attack (maybe I was even having a panic attack ,I don't know)
Last year I begged and explained to my mom that my life can't continue like this and asked for therapy. Therapy doesn't really help to be honest ,the only thing it made me a bit more comfortable with is taking that one specific bus. I was also able to force myself this week to go grocery shopping for the first time (my rabbit needed desperately food and I didn't wanna let her wait until the evening). so ,to a degree I can force myself doing things if i physically and mentally feel decent enough ,which to be honest is somewhat rare xD
And even then doesn't mean I will be able to do xyz.
I don't get any disability money or support ,whatever. My mom kept getting money because I'm still under 18 which is gonna change this year though, it makes me worried I will just be a burden again (even worse now because it would be financially).
I wanna get a job, I wanna earn my own money, make my living situation better without feeling like a burden all the time, I wanna give my rabbit her best life as well. It's just so difficult when there is always that fear of literally any step of getting a job though. I have applied to some sort of volunteer job, but I kinda feel like I won't get accepted. I also got in contact with some organisation that's supposed to help younger people getting a job (my therapist suggested that one). I just hope things work ,somehow.
(even now ,my dad is not really understanding and just tells me do to xyz.
My brother also used to call me lazy so many times. My mom just used to be understanding without really acknowledging I had a problem that needed help)

Overall great video! I hadn't really considered how tied ableism {on an indivual level, not systemically, if thats the right wording} and capitalism are, but now after hearing it it sounds almost obvious. Now after hearing that it makes sense people who are told their whole life that if they work hard enough they can do anything would see proof against that idea and assume it's the fault of the indivual, because challenging their view of the world is harder than accepting they contribute to a society that treats human rights as something to be earned based on their productivity and not on the basis of being human. Thank you for the new perspective on that!

As someone who has autism and lives in the US, it’s frightening watching the current erosion of our work protections and the stricter ISS regulations barring us from getting assistance. A lot of people are railing against DEI laws that make it so that potential employers cannot discriminate against us due to being a part of a protected class. While ableism mainly is an individual issue right now, we’re rapidly speeding towards a future whereas workplaces and government systems themselves can start neglecting/abusing us due to our disabilities.

I had to get a lawyer despite basicly being in the best possible position for applying (severe disability thats pretty clear cut and obviously impeading work ability (CRPS), multiple well documented dx with well kept records, long medical history, prescribed a wheelchair by 3 Drs and covered by insuarnce, etc)
my disabilities were well documented, easy to prove, and i also had work history of every job i had being brief and quitting w/o 2 weeks due to medical issues and dropping out of HS because of medical issues, again all of which were documented (later got a GED thankfully)

while there are people who Weaste their way into receiving SSI payments when they don't need them, it is DURRASTICLY smaller than what anyone make its out to be, and significantly more people who DO need it are denied.
and this isn't even considering the fact that these payments are literally not liveable at all. almost no one would actively chose to be legally required to live below the poverty line, put in copious ammounts of work to not only fake a disability infront of their own doctors (which costs money) but also infront of court assigned doctors, go to court, potentially hire a lawyer, and then maintain faking that disability afterwards in order to maintain the payments that are not enough to cover a rent let alone food, toiletries, and anything else they may spend the money on

I think you've made a lot of good points in this video, but it is important to remember that human nature dictates that there will always be people trying to game the system. For every person who is legitimately disabled and isn't able to function in society as able person could, there is another person who is simply lazy/malicious and will try to take advantage of terminology, resources and sympathies that are ment for disabled people. It is these people you must direct your frustration at! as someone who suffers from dyslexia, I don't like the idea of being placed in the same boat as someone with no reading disabilities whatsoever, but is simply lazy and can't be bothered to study. But peopl like that DO exist. We are not the same and we shouldn't be treated the same. The individuals who would lie to society about their ability to function within it are the problem. And that isn't the fault of capitalism, again it's simply human nature.

This was a very insightful and eloquent video! I feel like I learned something. Disability rights are not talked about enough and not enough is done about it. I hate how capitalism shifts human priority away from building community where everyone is cared for/supported and has a place, and towards optimizing productivity and profit. It’s not healthy for anyone to be stressed all the time, and it’s not healthy for disabled people to have to push themselves until they brake down physically + mentally just to try to survive.
Also, it must be very difficult to miss out on a lot of hours of your life and not be able to do things you want or need to do due to chronic fatigue. I didn’t know or hadn’t thought about how some people need to sleep many more hours just to function.

I agree that capitalism doesnt treat disabled people right. Nor really anyone right. But nor does any government economic structure, they are all designed to impose government authority over any population. It is why we havent ever had an idiocracity in any country government, cant have power over everyone if no one can hold government for long enough.
When it comes to infrastructure built for disabled people it becomes a financial question. We can make everywhere accessible, but who is going to pay for it. Our taxes are supposed to but no agency wants to take that up except for the bare minimum.
I wish it were different, but there isnt much the average person can do, even voting for someone who promises to change it wouldnt work because it is more than likely they cant or wont.

      @godlesssnowshoe  9 месяцев назад +5

that's why I specifically discussed dismantling the mindsets, while the average person can't do much in way of improving SSI payments or force business to be accessible, we can learn to be aware of when we're taking actions we may not even realize are ableist, and that Includes how non-disabled people think about their own independence and careers as well.
we can offer to help other people more when we can, without expecting it to be an exchange of money of favors, we can be aware of language like I mentioned in the video that's not intentionally harmful but still moralizes disablity, we can do small things like being aware of how we may be impacting others accessibility, like not taking handicap bathroom stalls or tables with handicap logos at restaurants that have them. if you have disabled friends or family you can offer to help them with things they've expressed they cant do themselves
many people who are not capitalist billionares are also small business owners as well. its not terribly expensive to get a folding ramp for their doors, and it's 100% free ro do things like not shovel snow into handicap parking acess aisles (somethat that happens a lot here in CO)
It's not just big political actions its also attitudes and actions that many people have and are unaware they're harmful, but are also very easy to fix with a little more self awareness and empathy

@@godlesssnowshoe: I would even go further and say that since AI, robots and automation are making so much work redundant, we need to reexamine the whole concept of working as the primary means of staying alive. I'm thinking in terms of a universal basic income (UBI) here. The UBI is funded by taxing the automated, robotic and AI production.
There are some practical issues, for example, some jobs like unblocking a drain simply cannot be automated, at least with the technology we have at present. So how do we keep things fair while some people perhaps need to work full time jobs and others do jobs where only a few hours are needed, here and there.
I would see this in terms of a social contract. The society provides every resident in a country with the means to live a dignified life. People for whom paid work no longer exists, assist, according to their abilities and preferences, with work that is necessary for the society. This would *_not_* be a full time job, rather it would be a few hours here and there, or it might be a short block once a year or whatever. This work is their side of the social contract. People with disabilities that prevent them from working would not be expected to do so, either in the private capitalist market or in the social contract market. People who still work longer hours in the capitalist market would not be expected to make as big a contribution to the social contract side of things.
We know from COVID that people put "free money" to good use. They didn't squander it, they didn't use it as an excuse to avoid going back to work when jobs began to reappear. At least in Australia, we know that a lot of people were getting more exercise during COVID (they were allowed out to exercise), they did things like gong through their houses and having big clean outs. The blood service was overwhelmed with donors - I donated less than usual because the donation appointments were all booked up.

What do you mean when you say equity not equality. I've had a pretty long conservative phase so I only know of equity as a negative that's about making us equally bad by bringing everyone down to the lowest common point, while equality makes it so our opportunities are being equalized and we're individually able to shine above others.

    • @godlesssnowshoe

equity is when everyone gets what they need, where equality is when everyone gets the same thing. in the case of disability it would not only makes absoutly no sense to provide accommodation and support to able bodied people who would not use it or benefit from it, but if we flip that around and NO ONE gets support than disabled people will essentially just be left to starve, die of their conditions, suffer, etc.

Churches had a way of distributing care and necessities in times past, but bad actors from clergy always managed to hoard donations or spread necessities only after aggressive propagandizing. I know there are strong Asian-style clans good at supporting their frail and disabled, but such family structure is the most susceptible to abuse and violence, too. Pretty tight communities in kibbutzim are well-known example of Marxist ideals kinda working kinda well, but they have been drifting far too. It takes homogeneity and high trust and solidarity to develop community-run effort at resource-redistribution that can accommodate and integrate local disabled and disadvantaged. Maybe state-wise tax-cuts or tax-returns rather than big direct transactions (that inevitably end up well wasted by corrupt and disinterested bureaucrats in positions of redistribution rather than small scale local volunteers who know where and who needs resources most, name by name) to local businesses and individuals who express desired behaviors, such as recycling trash, donations, crowdfunding of amenities, open kitchens for dependents or provide services otherwise. I sympathize with ideas of Slavoj and other dreamers, but all socialist ideas slip on incompetent, disinterested and corrupt people, soulless bureaucrats, no matter the political regime, when upscaled to regional and national level. Because there always will be people who couldn’t care less for anyone outside their direct circle of friends, apes are wired like this.

Yooo, honestly I agree with allah that. I think the ideas you present are def way more seen from older people, though I'm not disabled so I have never really experienced the hate that you might get on a daily basis. Everytime I visit my grandparents they usually go on and on about young and disabled people being lazy and how if you're not working your a leech and while I guess they're right if you don't work you don't produce anything therefore all you do is take, I don't see a great argument as to why we should cut these social programs or reduce how much money we spend on them like many people--mainly republicans and old people from my experience--vouch for. It's the governments job to make sure all of it's citizens can like live decent lives so I don't really see why people have the view that once you stop giving and start taking you're suddenly a shitty person who society could live without. Not everyone is born the same and I don't see why if rng-jesus doesn't give you some decent rng at spawn it's ur fault and everyone should treat you badly for it.
I also find it hilarious that my grandparents try to like shame anyone that doesn't work calling them leeches while being the definition of leeches and living off social security money that comes out of my every paycheck. They're like "Oh well if you're in a wheelchair you can just work a desk job at a computer then" like okay why don't you do that then? Sure, you can't do anything too physically taxing but your brain and fingers work so you could still work a job. I just find it so weird because I'm curious as to how long you have to work in their eyes before it's morally okay to be a leech for the rest of your days.
Also those people that are really poor but refuse government help because "They don't want to be a leech" piss me off so bad. Like those programs are there so you can fucking live and not die in the street (although as you said the money from those programs isn't exactly livable and you can't have more then 2k in savings which keeps you in poverty) you're not saving the west by refusing a little bit of money from the government or a morally better person.
I don't think my grandparents should actually work (that was to show everything they said could be applied to them) cause they have put in enough decades of that, but everyone takes at some point in their lives and some people just need to take more then others and I really don't see a problem with that 👍

      @godlesssnowshoe  9 месяцев назад +4

its definitly a much bigger issue with older generations for sure- even my dad, who voted republican for most of his life and whined about benifits programs.
when i was working on getting on SSI in my previous state he was shocked at how little money i would be given and i flat out told him "you voted for this, and now you care only once it becomes personal" and he was absoutly livid to be told that, but its true.
many people see everyone but themselves or those close to them as lazy or leeches off the government, and it was (almost) funny to see my dad have to deal with the direct consequenses of his own votes and politics now negativly effecting our family and still being unable to rationalize why he did something wrong.
i mentioned this in my last video, but younger generations are always pushing for more change, even like gen X and baby boomers in their own youth, every generation becomes more progressive. hopefully that will continue and when millinals and gen Z become more politocally prominante, work to fix some of this shit.

Somethings I wish you would include is the power and need of a government to implement wealth redistribution. The lack of taxation and regulations on major monopolistic corporations feeds into the myth of meritocracy. Also, we should replace our current tyrannical corperate hierarchy with workplace democracy to create 1. better paying jobs and 2. lessen the feeling of isolation workers feel. The lack of both these things can create a better society for everyone including people who have disabilities. Since both will ultimately increase the available wealth for a vast majority of people.

5hours a day*7 days a week * 10 bucks an hour equals~$15000. I'm a student you can live on that stop using excuses. Or alternatively gig economy. It's not ideal but those jobs are perfect for people with conditions like yours which limit working hours to being unstable. You have no right to others work.

im not on SSDI lol did u miss that whole section? also, i actually used to do uber eats. are you aware how many apartments and restaurants aren't wheelchair accessible? how hard it is to carry a huge bag and 3 drinks AND push a manual wheelchair? the fact that apps like that dont tell you the adress ahead of time, so you cant decline if you see an apartment number on a higher floor? me and my partner actually still do uber eats, but we have to do it together because i cant acess every building, which is actually against their TOS and has almost gotten my account suspended.
you are not my, or any other disabled person's, doctor. it is not up to YOU to determine what kind of work can be done.
