    Nice to see you doing a how to do. Looking at the cage I notice it had triangular bracing on the cage to the reel foot to reduce flexing. It the same system the use on there 30 and 50 series big game reel.

    Please don't take the shims out, everyone. I did and the spool was unstable until I replaced them. And no it was not a tensioning issue.

    You have just made that reel the same as a fathom 2 casting special with a smaller capacity.
    Ive now got both the fathom 2 15 and casting special. I tried the akios nitron and even though the internals were solid, (A fantastic gear box and the best pinion Ive seen in a retail reel), I found the construction poor. Tiny Screws that threaded as no inserts in the cage to house the screw, a spool that rubbed on both sides and where a ig brass bullet should if been there was a much thinner brass holding bush.
    The Akios is a great rough ground reel for those who never take there reels apart.

      Yes this will now do exactly what the Casting special does without the Big Knob digging into your wrist on retrieve and you saved a few pounds as well. Personally I like the 12 with the smallest spool l as it still has 30% more capacity than Abu 6500 and is very controllable even with hybrid ceramic bearings and the new mag.
      As for the Akios, I have not had one in my hands but there is an excellent and honest review you of the reel by Fish Locker on RUclips

      @@PimpMyReel The akios is great in theory but misses out in execution. It felt like it was rushed out on the market and not tested by people who like to abuse reels and fiddle with them constantly.

    Got two of these new recently, insanely good reels but the standard issue bearings seem VERY slow even with yellow rocket fuel. Is that something you've noticed?

    Hey Jamie, My name is Danny Jones from Ohio USA. I have been a subscriber for years and I love your channel. I wanted to know if you can help me obtain a mag set up for my Kastking rover. I love my rover 50 and I want to make it as large bait ready as I can. Would you mind looking into it and letting me know how I can get one? I really appreciate you and all you have taught me over the years. Please and thank you Danny Jones.

      I would use Corrosion Block water proof grease. If that is not available 3in1 oil or sewing machine oil is good for light oiling and Castrol GTX engine grease for heavy duty needs. Also GT85 lubrication spray is excellent and has Teflon in it.

    Hi just curious but would the mag side plate on this penn fathom II 15 fit the penn fathom II 15 Casting special as the mag dial on the 15cs digs into the wrist when retrieving making it very uncomfortable to use and is putting some off buying the casting special.

    • @PimpMyReel
      @PimpMyReel  2 года назад +1

      No because the Penn Fathom II casting special has a different diameter spindle BUT you can change the knob for a standard Penn Fathom SD Mag, mag dial.

    what is the point of putting faster bearings in then putting the mag on. just keep the slower bearings and reduce the mag ???

    • @PimpMyReel
      @PimpMyReel  2 года назад

      Because you will cast further with better bearings and a magnetic brake stopping the spool from over running.

    • @ShorrockPaul
      @ShorrockPaul 2 года назад

      @@PimpMyReel Ah ok i thought the magnetic brake operated throughout the cycle so it was slowing down spool throughout cast, in which case that would negate the fast bearings. if drag was completely off then i understand faster bearings spinning faster. i need get my head around how it works. am new to magnetic drags. Am looking at getting the Fathom II 15CS, so is a learning curve for me.

    • @PimpMyReel
      @PimpMyReel  2 года назад

      @@ShorrockPaul The mag brake is on throughout the cast, but its job is; if set right, is to slow down the spool just enough to stop over runs. Fast bearings faster spool further cast. The Fathom 12 & 15 Mk2 CS Mag's are great reels and with the added hybrid bearings will cast further than the Fathom casting special. This is because the casting special was designed by someone who does not know what he is doing. Same as the guy who designed the Abu Tournament Special. In the case of the Fathom casting special a bigger spool means more mass, therefore longer spin up time and also hindered by larger bearings. Together these give more mass which = more inertia and as they have the same magnetic braking system; less control during the cast. Then there is that horrible control knob...
      Bottom line, the standard Fathom 12 & 15 CS Mag are epic fishing tools in their own right. For me, I prefer the Fathom 12 CS Mag as it has 20% more spool capacity than an Abu 6500 or Akios 656 or 666 and has those great big brass gears. The whole reel is metal and the side plates are significantly more solid than the formentioned Abu and Akios. The reels are beasts.

    • @jpap967
      @jpap967 2 года назад

      It's not just faster bearings, they are smoother and more consistent throughout the cast. They start up faster and keep going longer which makes the job of the magnetic brakes easier since there's less eratic behavior from the spool and you can easily tune the reel to now cast farther and more consistent without any more risk of backlash with ceramic bearings.

    I am on the fence between this reel and the SM Star Drag Casting Reel. Obviously the Penn is cheaper but which do you recommend to stand the test of time??? Do you think the SM is worth the extra money?

    • @PimpMyReel
      @PimpMyReel  5 лет назад

      Seigler SM has a lifetime warranty so its a nobrainer. The Penn will last 3 or 4 years of hard use, the seigler will last a life time!!
