- In light of the USSR shooting down a civilian passenger plane for crossing into restricted airspace, of which contained the launch site for their armed Buran shuttle, the U.S decides to come back full swing by seizing control of lithium mining site 357 Bravo using the dispatched Moon Marines. The Cold War is now heating up within Earth's sphere of influence.

The incident was tense, I had doubts that we would all make it out alive but with the unmatched quality of marine training and fighting spirit, we were victorious. It's good you sent us, the Army and Navy would have just embarrassed themselves. A great day for democracy. Now make with those commendations please.
My father was a U.S. Navy officer in the Seabees -- navy construction and combat engineers -- during the Second World War in the Pacific. He served with the Marines in lovely South Pacific garden spots like Guadalcanal, Tinian and Saipan. To the day he died, the former lieutenant commander had nothing to express about the Marines except admiration. So, while the Marines may be known for their bravado, their organization earned that right at Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Pelelieu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Chosin, Hue and a dozen other battles with determined enemies.

Naval infantry are useless chumps, never accomplished anything in Iraq or A-stan. When they need something really done, you send in the Army. When you need photo ops like the beach landing in Somalia, you send in naval infantry.

Always love how there is no sound in the space parts. Some movies it is just loud loud loud space explosions and rockets. No atmosphere = No noise.
Just as bad with space combat, always showing flames and fireballs when there's no atmosphere and thus they'd be small flashes. Unless it's the ship blowing up and expelling debris there shouldn't be any flames, unless they're trying to enhance the drama

Nice "Apocalypse Now" reference with "Ride of the Valkyries" being collectively hummed by the space Marines.
Yes lol
When did this episode take place? Apocalypse Now was released in '79, and was based on the Vietnam War. How did the Vietnam War, and cultural attitudes regarding in it, differ between this series' timeline and ours? What I'm wondering is if the movie existed by that point in their timeline, or even if it existed at all? It's interesting to see what pop culture elements (things that happened not directly related to the Cold War or space) they kept the same in this series, many relevant pop culture references were made, but as Apocalypse Now was directly related to Cold War actions, and public perceptions of the Vietnam War, I'd question if that would have been the same.
@@quillmaurer6563 FAMK S2 takes place in 1983. In For All Mankind’s first season, Nixon pulls out in 1970, so there was more than enough time for anti-Vietnam protests in the US (in fact, in the intro for S1, they are showcased).
Sci-fi shows & movies are more popular in FAM’s timeline than our own (such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, or Star Wars, which are both extremely popular in FAM’s timeline).
@@nullifiedrisks Ah, it all fits then. The Vietnam War ended earlier in their timeline than ours, but still after Apocalypse Now.
Yeah that part made me smile. Even more when the Mission Control guy looks up when they start singing like “Wtf is happening”
“We’ve captured a command post.”
"Their reinforcements are dwindling."
Ah, good old SWBF2
"Another command post under American control"
"We have captured Objective Charlie"
"Please select a fleet to command."

@RingSight91 yep, true story. Any way, if Buran fail. US Will have loot of time to fortifite And bring And train Moore marines. Any Soviet respond Will take few years, if Buran Will be out of game.
Don't laugh, it's actually a valid idea to minimise loss of life: Marines and VDV both equipped with paintball guns. Get hit on the chest or helmet and you're 'dead'. The winner of the lithium mine is the person who has their flag up and no opposition left 'alive'.

marines*
So since they start singing "Ride of the Valkyries" at 1:09 I suppose that we can assume that _Apocalypse Now_ was still released in theaters in this alternate timeline.
I was pondering that - how did the Vietnam War and the public perception of it play out in this timeline? Many pop culture references imply events (such as movies, songs, etc) not related to space or the Cold War were the same as in our timeline, but as Apocalypse Now was about the Vietnam War, part of the Cold War and surely influenced by public perception regarding it, I'd suspect these things might not have been the same in their world as ours, so Apocalypse Now might not have been made, or might not have been popular.
@@quillmaurer6563 Thanks to the continuation of the Space Race, in this timeline the US and USSR put more energy and funding into that rather than fighting proxy wars on Earth. Vietnam ends way sooner and the Soviets never invade Afghanistan.
@@ryansmith1044 Ah - that's what I suspected based on what I've seen of this timeline. Which brings into question if Apocalypse Now would have been made, or would have been popular. Feels like a potential continuity error.

I know the alternate timeline has deviated a bit and they're a bit more ahead in somethings now than would really be in the 80's... But that said.... Those are some damn fucking flexible gloves and they can get their digits inside the trigger guard quite comfortably too...
They might have been able to make gloves that weren't as well armored and layered since they've been researching for moon occupation since Jamestown base module was flown in. Possibly just Kevlar layers of cloth only instead of Kevlar, chain mail, and other though fabrics. The sockets for the wrists might be the only thing kept and that was nearly the most expensive aspect of the moon gloves.
@@dragonsword7370 Still 40 years on our current gloves couldn't handle an M16 derivative very easily, even with the bottom of the trigger guard cut out. We literally have enlarged elongated trigger guards for firearms that can be used with giant thick gloves in arctic conditions, they could very easily have done something similar.
I just wish they had made some attempt at trying to convey that the weapons had been modified and tweaked for operation on the moon because a white paint job, a little nook cut out of the base of the trigger guard and a collapsible stock hardly cries immersive practicality.
if you look in other scenes with them you can see that the trigger guard is actually removed to aid with operating the gun with a pressurized suit on
Indeed, observing closely the scene where they gear up, we can see that the trigger guard is removed.
@@anthonynielsen3867 Still continuing to nit-pick I see. No one is disputing the trigger guards have a cut-out. Literally no one. The fact remains, they do still *have* trigger guards. The point was that the gloves that they would be using in this period wouldn't have been able to fit, bottom cut-out or not. Hence the mention that perhaps they had developed thinner more flexible gloves, more so than what we have today.
These marines could be playing “Ride of the Valkyries” just like Colonel Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, yeehawing and naplaming all the way in, in good old American style.
I imagine napalm would be way less impressive on the moon, lol
I don't get why all the hate for the Soviet spacesuits, if anything it would seem the Soviets have found a way to make them more maneuverable and lightweight in comparison to the bulky US ones. It could also indicate resource shortages in the USSR to keep up pace with US production.
its probably just unfamiliarity with Soviet tech and nostalgia towards US since the Space Race heavily biased towards the US because of the Moon Landing. You also pretty much learn nothing about the USSR in school history classes except the fact that they were objectively bad.

What would be epic would be a sci-fi horror/ thriller where a motley crew has to keep a base in operations whilst things for terribly wrong or gets some unwanted visitors, everything matters be it say being over sentimental, waste of valuable resources and going through the phycological aspects of each member, where people steal food, a misjudgment which may have saved their lives in one episode, comes back to haunt them and where bullets ACTUALLY HAVE CONSEQUENCES, such as blowing a hole into the ship or shooting a main power cable, all the while trying to gather resources by mining for iron and the like where drones can be used however to use one or more will drain the bases energy, vs a rover with a solar and a two person seat and a large storage space, but in order to do so will require the use and consumption of food and water including wear and tear on the rover, as well as being able to carry more resources than via a drone
Later on in FAMK a bullet does infact have consequences as it destroys a reactor coolant chip and almost blows up the entire base.
