This was actually my first experience with the franchise. I remember picking it up at a game store when I was in high school. Once I started playing it, I couldn't put it down.
I remember that, after playing some it and putting it down, years later I mistook the Best Friend for the Main Character. That aside, I couldn't really get into it back then. I could go and play it now, but I'm honestly more focused on the Mainline games at the moment. That said, Lufia The Legend Returns is amazing by the way. Don't listen to the haters. I don't doubt the fact that it's a bit of a weird choice to put it on the GBC, but because of it it's easily one of the best-looking JRPGs in there. The soundtrack is not something to scoof at either, with the track that plays in Leong Temple being my favorite.
It’s so obnoxious how no one reviews this game with out comparing it to its past games. This is the best RPG I’ve ever played and nothing compares. I searched my whole life for a jrpg this fun and exciting. It does it all amazingly! Not even Lufia 1 or 2. So stop comparing it to those.
This was the most positive review I’ve heard of this game. I’m a pretty big Lufia fan but I could not get into Ruins of lore. In fact I think the gameboy Lufia game has a better story. I will agree the music and battle graphics are great but I just couldn’t finish this game. And what did they do to my boy Dekar
Thanks for leaving your thoughts! Yes, I found some other reviews of people who didn't like it quite as much as me. But I actually thought it was alright!
Same, got lufia 2 first and loved it played 1 and 3 later and thought they were OK not even close to 2 but fine RPGs... then I picked this game up years ago played it for hours and just couldn't get into it. Just a big meh.
I think this is better then Lufia I but not as good as II, or The Legend Returns (Which is both my favorite Lufia game and my favorite game originally made for the Gameboy Color)
My ranking for the series is, in descending order: Lufia II, Ruins of Lore, Lufia I. The inclusion of Dekar is enough to push Ruins of Lore above Lufia I; Dekar is the man.
I personally really enjoyed Lufia 2 and Ruins of Lore. Though I'm not sure anymore if Ruins of Lore was that good or if it just scratched that "pokemon" itch I had back in the days.
It isn't a bad game... but I never really gave it enough time. A lot too kiddy for my tastes at the time and it's somewhere alongside of Ankylosaurus fossils in mt. Backlog now.
It's unfortunate how this game is so close to greatness. Everything has a bit too much startup lag inside of battle, you're back to Lufia 1 battle mechanics like turn amounts being based on Agility and being unable to cancel actions out once you select them, the story becomes very rushed by the end, and the lack of save points inside of dungeons is a baffling exclusion from previous games. It's quite telling that the game features a ton of unused content, from unused enemies, to unused sprites, to unused music even. There's a credits theme in the game, but no credits sequence at all. Ragule has like 3 appearances in the whole game, and 4 lines of dialogue. The game was very obviously rushed, and that's a shame. I like the combat in The Legend Returns, I like how it's the one game in the entire series that doesn't degrade bosses into regular enemies, making all of them unique and memorable in some form or another; I also like the ideas this game introduces as well, like the Disc Monsters system and switching partners mid-dungeon, something that was originally planned for Lufia II but scrapped during the prototype phase of development by the time they got to making Artea's sprites. To me, the ultimate Lufia game would be a mixture of The Legend Returns and Ruins of Lore's combat systems, while having the more episodic nature of Rise of the Sinistral's plot. Shame the Harvest Moon devs still own the Lufia IP, because even though chances for a remake would be small, at least in the hands of Square Enix they'd likely have tried a remake of the first game instead of the second one, which really didn't need one.
To add to my other comment, I would've liked it better if they looked at Golden Sun as an example, especially since it was a very famous example of GBA JRPG, and they could've even used The Lost Age as a better part of it as well.... not sure what went wrong there.
Im a huge fan of Lufia 2, and in my opinion this game cannot hold a candle to part 2 on the SNES. I’m having to force myself just to play it at the moment because there are so many aspects of this game that I feel were poorly designed. The story itself is generally uninteresting, and its hard to like any of the characters. Its just all around boring and not fun.

Great to know that some people like you really loved this one!
Seems like an interesting series.. Hopefully they’ll put out a remaster collection like what happened with Grandia
Yes, Lufia could use some remasters!
That chrono trigger intro will never get old, infact I chime along with the jingle
I didn't even know this existed!!!! We need all the Lufia games remastered!!!!
Yes we do!
They did Lufia 2 for DS... Meh
The sprite artwork is the sole reason I'm playing through this rn

Love the content you provide us. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks so much for your support, and for watching it!
First played this game 15 years ago, im 27 now lol thanks for the nostalgia.
Great review as always, you give a really thorough presentation of each jrpg that I always end up wanting to play all of them!
Glad you like them!

“Powerful beast called Monster”.
The games are so funny with the names.
Well they talk about the "monster" as a horror story for children.
Never played the series but I’m loving the sprite work.
Thanks for the review! Just downloaded this one!
Have fun!
Nice work man! Love these retro RPG reviews ❤
Glad you like them!
I think this is better then Lufia I but not as good as II, or The Legend Returns (Which is both my favorite Lufia game and my favorite game originally made for the Gameboy Color)
Thanks for your thoughts! I'd put it in between I and II though I think I liked it more than The Legend Returns.
I'd have to disagree. Lufia 1 has great music, and really cute (if simple graphics) that combine to push it far over the edge of this game.
I always hear that people loathe this game and i never really understood why. Glad to see a different perspective =)
Thanks! I guess I just like it a little more than most!
A few tweaks here and there with a little sprinkle of update this could be if the best rpg ever.
I played the heck out of this game.
Ruins of Lore < The Legend Returns
Legend returns has better story but this plays better and has a smoother flow
@@propagandapandas
I don't care about the plot. I care more about the dungeon crawling like the Dragon Quest.
I love this game fking amazing
This game need a rework or an update.
This right here is a true underrated gem.
20 years of Lufia and the ruins of lore
True!
My ranking for the series is, in descending order: Lufia II, Ruins of Lore, Lufia I. The inclusion of Dekar is enough to push Ruins of Lore above Lufia I; Dekar is the man.
Thanks for your ranking - and yes on Dekar!
And the GBC part?
@@shalokshalom I never played it and it didn't look particularly enticing to me.
@@mrnobody4047 It's quite cute. Quite different to Lufia 2 for sure, but has it's own charm. A bit more geared towards children, I guess.
@@mrnobody4047do you feel the same with the ds remake of lufia 2?
I mean by not finding it enticing enough to play
I personally really enjoyed Lufia 2 and Ruins of Lore. Though I'm not sure anymore if Ruins of Lore was that good or if it just scratched that "pokemon" itch I had back in the days.
Breath of Fire with a dash of Pokemon
Hype!
You know it!

Give it a go sometime!

This games $125 at my local store in alaska 😮

The job system is a lot like dragon quest 7
I'm finally playing it now. Its really good. Collecting a lot of stuff on the Ancient Cave.
Lufia? More like Goof-ia, am I right?
Just kidding, I've never played this series. 😊
The game is ok but the story is dreadfully dull. I tried a few times to finish it, but got bored plus the difficulty was annoying.
