self taught "painter" who struggles with anything being good enough. One day bought brushes, paint and paper and gave it a go. Thanks for the tips. I learned some things that might help me be less demanding. You are an amazing talent and I love watching you paint.
Thank you Maria for sharing the tips on RUclips. You are really talented 😍 and inspire me so much. I have tried painting several pieces of your artworks by following your instruction and will keep on!
Maria, another wonderful instructive video. I really like all your work but this wraps up so much for anyone using or beginning watercolors. The tip on gouache was especially helpful and your illustrations really topped the technique! Thanks again, you are my favorite artist in watercolor! 🌸👩🏻🎨
Maria, you are so sweet to share this information with those of us who love and follow you. Especially since your life has gotten so much better with your wee one! Congratulations! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the gifts you give to those of us who follow you. I am forever grateful for what I've learned, and implemented, in my own paintings. I am very new, and realize just how new I am when I view your paintings. You are truly gifted, Maria. Thank you so very much for what you share with those of us who are "budget conscious." Hi Frances🌸☺️🌹it's my pleasure to share with you!! if there were only more hours in a day I would post a new video every day lol so many ideas come to my mind especially in the middle of the night when I hold my baby to feed and sleep again... wish I had more time. Thank you for appreciating my work😃🦋🥰
great summary of some basic watercolor techniques..........when I first started with this medium, and still at times, it can leave so many artifacts, like blooms, etc. and become very frustrating............having a basic knowledge of why these things happen and what to do and not to do helps so much..............I need to practice so much more to hopefully improve my painting...........watching the videos and classes is great, and then you have to do it yourself, to get the feel of things I think.............love your videos!
There is also a fourth type of watercolor paper that is 100% cotton artist grade. Its called "Soft Pressed. Most companies do not make soft pressed but Fabriano Artistico Co still makes it. Jerry's Artarama carries it. I had some once and an artist friend of mine loves using it. PS, Botanical Illustration water-colorist will do a lot of dry brushing only they use the very tip of their brush slightly splayed out using feather like sweeps. Some do the whole painting in dry brush application. Awesome to work this way. Thank you for sharing. Your work just keeps getting more awesome.
Thank you Renee! Thank you for sharing. I did hear about "soft press" it's like between Hot Pressed and Cold Pressed but it never appealed to me for some reason to try it.. 🌸
@@mariamorjane I tried it once several years ago and its actually a bit spongy. I guess that's why they call it soft. The paper is not hard surfaced like hot or cold pressed. Color lifts very easily on it so hardly and scrubbing needed. But if you have to scrub, it wouldn't take it very well. You cannot get it in blocks and they don't make it in the tablet pads anymore so I don't buy it.
What a great video! As I am a beginner in watercolour, this is exactly what I need, just can’t tell you how much I appreciate your thorough introduction to this beautiful media. Thank you so much. 👍
First off, love your channel and your paintings are STUNNING! Secondly, this was an excellent and informative video. 🎨👍 Some of the tips you mentioned made me finally realize some of the small mistakes I’ve been making resulting in the issues you’ve highlighted-initially, I hadn’t made the connection between the two (that moment when the lightbulb💡 FINALLY goes off! 🤦♀️). Thank you sooo much for this video!
EXCELLENT video. Thank you so much for your time, knowledge, tips and techniques. Love your style of painting. I am in hope to become satisfied with my own style of painting. With practice and your guidance my journey of growing old gracefully, happy and fulfilled. Namaste

Lots of 😍 love 😘😘
This was an awesome tutorial! Thank you. I have seen many of your tutorials. I see Neutral Tint often. Is that like Gouache? I use mostly Windsor and Newton paints. Would I be able to find "neural tint" with that brand? You used it in your "Painting a Forest in Watercolor". I don't exactly understand why and what it does. And another question: Do you hate blooms? Seems pretty at times! Again. I am very grateful for your tutorials.
Hi Connie, thank you so much 🤗Neutral Tint is just another shade of great, another watercolor, if you don't have it you can just use Payne's Gray by WN for example, although most companies do have this watercolor pigment as well. I love blooms ☺️🌹It just depends on what I am painting. Blooms are beautiful.

Hi, thank you so much 🌸☺️🌹With brushes, today every brush company has similar types of brushes its just a matter of what they use to make that hair and handles. I used to use Velvettouch a lot for detailed work now I found myself using more and more for that Heritage. Black Velvet have pointy long end, excellent to paint animals and flowers and landscapes too. But they are softer so if you like softer like I do, those are great as well. They do hold a lot of water but Aqua Elite does too. The small Aqua Elite, Heritage, Velvettouch the less they can hold water because they are stiffer. For lasting, it just a matter of a company how they make their brushes. Generally Black Velvet last for a long time, Heritage too. Aqua Elite I go thru them much faster but I also paint with them a lot. Synthetic or Natural it doesn't matter, I'm pretty rough with my brushes overall 😍
@@mariamorjane thanks Maria for all the information...............it really is very helpful...........I'm thinking about getting some new brushes, and with all the brushes out there, it's hard to make choices.......and it's also expensive and even a bit frustrating...........I'm finding that to do a lot of the work, I need a combination sometimes........at least some stiffer brushes for small detail work, but some softer brushes for more spontaneous soft flowing work.........I've never used Heritage or Aqua Elite.........I do have some Velvettouch and Silver Black Velvet brushes.......sometimes if I've done some of the less detailed work, and then don't have the right brushes.......ie size, type, etc. for details.......such as eyes, etc. the whole painting can be disappointing and I just can't get the effect I'm going for..........ie too thick lines, difficulty getting around areas where I want the highlights and paper white to be preserved, etc............I will have to decide.........again, thanks some much for your very information answer.......have a lovely day Maria........it's nice and cool here in New York today.......I love this type weather........Autumn is on it's way.........hope you're enjoying the LA weather too!

Best tutorial I have ever watched. Very informative. Exactly what I am looking for as a beginner. However, does the BRAND of watercolor you use matters? Does it make a difference esp on wet on wet technique? Or it’s just about paint:water ratio to have that great water flow? Appreciate a response. Thank you.
Hi Nanette, thank you☺️🌹Paints do matter but it depends what techniques you will be using, if a lot of wet on wet then Holbein are great because they are easier to control (Holbein doesn't add oxgall, brands that do use it make their paints spread much faster). The ratio is also important ☺️🌹
