    Terri, magnificent piece you’ve put together here. An incredibly informative video in such a gorgeous, peaceful setting. Many truths here also, you speak with much wisdom. You’re quite right about the Irish diaspora of the modern West having lost their culture and traditions. I myself am from Australia with a long history of ancestors from Ireland, the earliest of them from Co. Tyrone, however that was in the early 1810’s. Despite never having been to Ireland, my heart yearns for the place. There is a great part of me that struggles to identify with Australia and it’s landscapes, in many ways it feels like the wrong place for us to be. I have a pathway to live in Ireland and I’m very strongly considering it, and this video is a very positive influence on that.
    Couldn’t agree more on your comments about government control pushed under the veil of feel-good ‘environmentalism’. The true environmentalists of us live locally and sensibly. They are people who hunt ethically, forage, grow their own food, eat a natural whole-food diet and have a healthy respect for our beautiful lands. I’ll be damned if they think they’re going to get me in the mega city, driving an electric car made with cobalt dug up by African children and eating bug burgers ‘for my health’
    Thank you for putting this together and I’ll be subscribing for more

    I will preface this by saying I am from Wyoming USA. Wyoming is a very large open space with not many people living here compared to other states in America.
    I am touched to see that no matter where we live in the world, our feelings are so much the same. Autumn is my favorite time of year. It's a time of in gathering. We harvest our gardens. Hunt our game to fill our freezers for winter. And can to preserve our foods. The feeling of having that all together for winter just warms the soul. Our family and friends do come together for hunting season. It used to be more so. But still is on a smaller scale. Cutting up the meat and getting it ready to freeze is a family affair. My father has a large garage area with all the equipment needed to get this done quickly.
    When I was a child coal was burned here. We live by a coal mine. No one burns coal anymore. Due to air quality rules. We burned a lot of wood. It kept the forest floor cleaner and the threat of fires was less. Now to have a woodburning stove a person has to pay such a high amount of house insurance. It takes away the economy of burning the wood. Sad really. People used to save so much money. We live in a very cold area. We are in the far north. Near the Montana border. I wish they wouldn't take away the things that people need just to stay warm. If you were willing to work hard and in gather for yourselves, your family would always be warm and fed. The leaders of our country are taking that away from us.

      That is sickening! They always get you one way or another. And as for the whole carbon argument, burning wood is better than leaving it to rot down. Either the rules are deliberate to enslave people or else the so called leaders are just plain stupid.

    Oh Dear Terri, today's video is such a wonderful treat.
    I closed my eyes and brought forth the beautiful scent of burning turf down in Kerry 50 years ago.
    I think it was 1990 or so when a whole section of bog was transported from Ireland to Yonkers Racetrack in New York. Demonstrations were given of futting the turf, there was a blacksmith and demonstrations of soda bread making along with a wonderful dance session where the audience was invited up to the stage.
    My mother said it was the best day she ever spent in the U.S!! Grand memories!
    So thanks for the reminder. Eleanor

    Politicians don’t work for us or the environment. Unfortunately I see it getting worse before it will get better. People are being told they the governments or big companies are being mindful but the actions and results say the opposite. Enough said. Thank you for showing a still piece of heaven on earth. 😂 I love that dog.

    Oh, this brings back warm memories. My mother's parents came to USA from Ireland and we would go to Ireland to visit family. I spent some time in August 1973 helping bring in the turf. I spent a month that summer staying with a cousin. They had no running water or toilet and heated/cooked with turf. Oh how I loved that smell! All our food came from the farm - it was heaven! Think that is why I moved to rural Vermont - it reminded me of Ireland. Thank you so much for sharing this.

      Bogs are amazing environments but I don't believe any more fragile than other types of environments and let's face it, all environments are vulnerable when greedy corporations want to rip the soul out of the earth. As for the bog shown here, it was only two years ago when our government was going to ignore all the "environmental" stuff and allow mining to take place! As for not allowing people onto the bog near you, who are they to do that?

    Born and raised in the USA and yet somehow this video has made me homesick for Ireland! I often purchase little turf cubes to burn as incense and I’m amazed at how much heat one little inch square cube produces. Terri, I have a few questions..... When you put what is harvested along the side of the road, is that a communal pile for anyone to take from or is it reserved for a particular family? Or do families mark their own piles they make? Is the harvest from private land or public? Such a fascinating episode, thank you!

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад +5

      I used to buy those when I lived in England. Re your questions - People have their own section of bog that they cut the turf on and then they put the turf out on the road ready for collection. It is not communal, people have their own piles.It has to be put out on the road because come winter, the bog will be too wet to be going on to every time you need turf. Once it is on the road, it is brought home by tractor trailers. The bog doesn't really belong to anyone, although the government thinks it is theirs. Hope that explains things xx

    It is about control Terri. Keeping traditions alive is so important...all those centuries of working the bogs and burning the turf. I love the idea and would be doing the exact same. Beautiful surroundings u can almost sense the peacefulness....such a special place. 🙏

    They always say the opposite! Terri , thankyou for a great video. I love the old ways and often sit and think of what my grandparents told me. I find myself going back to that way of thinking more and more.......why? because it made more sense.

    What a beautiful gift the bog is. I was fascinated to hear about it and see it’s beauty. I think you are right how we are manipulated to abandon true and tried ways , to be dependent on the grid which these days feel like being held hostage and paying exorbitant ransoms. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼💫❣️

      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  2 года назад

      We are being made to become dependant on some other one or some other thing instead of being encouraged to be self-sufficient. You are right about being held hostage and I am sorry for those that are being so. xx

    I am so glad that you did this video and talked about how this old way of heating your home is not
    bad at all, and how the modern methods are more about control and do not make any sense.
    I hope people go back to the old ways. I am european, but live in crazy Los Angeles, where I can not even
    buy denatured alcohol to make shellac for wood working.
    Thank you and bless you.

    Thank you for the history lesson Terry! I’m always fascinated and love hearing about what my ancestors went thru years ago and you are a good teacher! The doggie looked like he was having the most fun ☺️ Yes, it is controversial what fuel is best. Is it government sway by saying natural gas is best or are they just trying to get people to spend more money their way? Hmmmm…🧐 All the same, you are enjoying what you know and have to be happy and comfortable. 😌 Wishing you a lovely week and I can’t wait to see your next video! ♥️

    Thank you so much for this fascinating episode, Terri! I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The scenery is so beautiful and I could almost imagine myself out there with you and the other ladies, drinking in the fresh air and smells of the bog. We need to keep standing up to and saying no to ridiculous and nonsensical control. Enough is enough. Enjoy your lovely turf fires, a gift from the goddess :)

    Love this informative video on the bogg. Very interesting. I can imagine the smell of it burning in the fireplace on a cold fall/winter night, snuggled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, and reading a good book. I really can put myself there in my imagination. Must be that ancestral cellular memory... ☺️❤️👋

    Dat 1 brings back the best memories. The slane, metal rimmed wheels on the ass cart. And gettin a bottle a coke at the ene of a day for emptying many loads of turf for the shop keeper's. But dat coke was the best. Although sometimes we got a pound as well. Great times. Thanks.

    Brilliant video Terri. So informative. My ancestors left a couple of generations back and went to Scotland, but did not return so agree with you! Think returning is my job now! I was touring the west for a couple of weeks, just back and was reminded of how beautiful the air is and the water - the loughs are crystal clear. The bog looked stunning in the sunshine with the mountains in the background. Has it's own atmosphere ... Love the videos, much appreciated. Kxx
