- When you are living Narrowboat Life anything can happen. On the towpath I heard the distress of a young woman. So I found the most appropriate thing to do. Invite her in for a cuppa while we sorted the issues out.

You got a decent work out on all those locks ! Well done for doing the right thing with the missing girl
Puts your faith back in people in this day an age
Thanks for the comment and support Michael. Have a great week.
Thanks for taking care of the girl. You likely changed her life by showing kindness. I work with teens and sometimes one person can put a teen back on course! Great Vlog as always.
Thanks Jayne. I recognised her plight and what I thought strange, is that she passed a number of boats before I found her. I wonder if people just ignored it or simply didn’t hear her? I’m pleased I was just able to assist. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
Well done Chris, its quite clear youre a proper gentleman
Thank you James. I do try. Have a great week.
Another great video. Watching your videos has become an enjoyable part of my weekly to-do list. 😊 Until next week, smooth sailing.
Thank you for the comment and I'm pleased you and many are starting to feel that way. It adds pressure to the vids which makes me want to improve and not become complacent. Thank you Julie and have a great week.
Yes, I love the music. The Herbal Tea song always brings out the best in your videos. The icing on the cake.
Thanks Martin. I like that little number. It was a good fit for my thoughts of B&W Fuels. Have a good week mate.
Thanks always informative and entertaining. Carry on.
Thank you very much Greg. I appreciate the thought and generosity. Have a great week.
Oh hell no. I feel this is a sequel to our coal box conversation. A young lady calling out for help through the night has always been a bad omen and is usually immediately followed by a home invasion. You're a good man for helping, Chris. But if that were me, I'd have told her to wait outside near the boat and called the police to handle it. Warm drinks and blankets provided if needed, but open doors and dark places do not mix!
Stay safe, Chris.
It was a tough call to be honest. I was aware of the threats. I do have a few security implements. There is Billy at one end. That said, I did move a two days later. She was ok thankfully. Thanks for the concern though. Have a great week.
Good drills on responding to that girl and the way you dealt with it. When you mentioned getting a sniffle, I immediately thought, what do you do regarding Doctors & Dental appointments? Maybe a Q&A for the vlog. My shoulder is healing well, but still not fit enough to drive or ride, maybe in a few more weeks. I got a tad bored smashing box sets, so I purchased a harmonica and following some online courses. I’ve resisted the temptation to throw it out the window on several occasions. Who’d have thought that such a simple instrument, can be such a challenge to master the basics. Anyway shipmate, good to see you’ve mastered your zest for canal life and the approaching Winter isn’t stressing you out. Take care Mon ami.
I laughed at the harmonica and window. I think that’s a great idea Jack. Something I might do in the future as it’ll fit on the boat easily enough. The canal is still full of rubbish so I, like you would need to control myself. You’re more than welcome when you’re fit enough mate. Unless you’re good at the music machine, leave it at home though!! Thanks for the support Jack and have a great week. Rest is a weapon Jason Bourne taught me that. Only in his books but not the movie.
I have one of those remote light controls but no switch in my garden office. I thought it would help to velcro it to the wall where a light switch ought to be. Doesn't work; most of the time when I feel for the switch in the dark I just end up feeling a bit of velcro. All remotes migrate when left unattended. Often to sofa cushions and occasionally to the fridge.
I have 5 remote which all do a series of lights. I can operate some lights from the bedroom which will do aspects of the boat. As do the galley and saloon. I now operate certain lights from a room I’m in. They are attached to the wall and I have one in reserve as I don’t need to use it. If they’re on the wall. I can find them again. Took a long time to work out that simple thing of common sense. Lazy was the route cause. Works fine now. I understand where you’re coming from Thanks Steve. have a great week.
We need a whole load of ex army coppers, Chris! What we have now is frightening! Our police service now is only serving some of the community.
Steady on Lyn. Although I get your sentiment, I have dealt with many in my life - I wasn’t always a good boy, be careful what you ask for. I was never convicted nor charged with anything as I appear to always be one step ahead. You don’t want people worse than me getting away all the time. However, there is a lack of Police which is why society is running a muck. Who will make the Home Secretary accountable who made that decision? Thanks for the comment though and as always enjoy your week.
Great vlog Chris, your a true gentleman for helping that young lady out👍 since I've been watching your vlogs I've come to the conclusion that nothing is to much trouble your just someone who will go the extra mile for others and it's great to see 👍 keep up the good work mate 👍🍻
Thanks for the supportive comment Andy. Yes is the answer. I will do stuff for others as one day, the hope is, they will return the effort should I need it. Enjoy you week mate.
Nice work out on lock’s will keep you in shape for the next photo shoot 😂and the mobile shop 👍 videoing was nice to watch ,see you on Sunday 👍👍👍👍👍
Just a quick message on the Sunday thing. There won’t be a Sandbag Sunday as I’m trying to get this infernal website built. That is my main effort other than the Wednesday vlogs. Must get it ready for the Christmas rush!!! Thanks Thomas. Have a great week.
@@chrismears-inslowtime you have to able too show your product good luck with all of this stuff 👍👍👍👍👍🎃🥶
Well done Chris, top man, good call, to say stay on the line in a difficult situation like that, Mad hatter owner seems like a great bloke to have a laugh with...all the best.
Lloyd on Mad Hatter is a top bloke. I'm sure he would have done the same thing too. The strange thing was the woman passed a number of boats before I heard her. Good job I wasn't asleep. Thank for the comment Kevin. Have a good week.
Great vid Chris
Thank you Tony. Have a great week.
Nice vlog once again Chris 😊 you should be a youth worker for troubled kids, your experience would be a god sent gift 🎁 perhaps even get them out on your boat and teach them some skills? At least it would get them active.
I've considered that to be honest. However, I need a stable lifestyle and this nomadic one appears to be one that could be useful but too difficult for continuity. Have a good week Jon.
I like your off the cuff chats the best.
I think a lot of the channel is very much off the cuff. Admittedly that story was how it happened. However, there is a lot of off the cuff comments that are total crap that never make the edit. Have a great week.
Bad lad, we're is your cycle hat on a bad towbath😮 Great watch ChrisX🐰x
I know Julie. And to make it worse I travelled back on the road as it was quicker and less muddy. Good job I didn’t film that or you would have had my guts for garters. Old phrase I never understood. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week.
Welldone Chris just shows some of us are ok, Most women dont go running in dark in winter because they dont trust us, Just shows some of us are really ok.
Thanks Tony. I’m not sure where she started her journey, but she did have to pass a fair few boats before she got to me. Have a great week.
That 19 minutes went quickly... not only helping Lloyd through the locks, but recounting the story of the young woman needing help at the same time. It's a tricky thing to navigate so you did well in calling 999. Hopefully she's doing much better. Congratulations on busting through the 5K mark, Chris. Have a great week.
Thanks RJ. I’ve thought about telling a story that way and when informed me of his intent, too good to miss. Much more enjoyable editing and I’m sure watching. Thanks for the support mate and enjoy your week.
Well done Chris pleased to hear your happy. What happen to the lady?
Thanks Gillian. She went back to where she ran away from. Complex decision making for the Dibble. Have a great week.
James Brown...`I Feel Good`sprang to mind as I watched the vlog today. A real treat, and a belly laugh watching Loyd walking back as he progressed forward. The feel good factor of the fuel boaties kicked it off and what a nice accolade from yourself to them. As a storyteller the way you wove the incident of the young lady the gorgeous scenery, music and locks was a treasure. And to top it of Steve Mcgarret...Book him Dano.
Great song by James Brown. I think one that everyone knows. Thanks for the comment and support John. Have a great week.
Cheers, Chris. Good vlog. Good man for looking after the young lady. You did everything right. My modern counterparts get a bad press these days, but as we've said before, it's the way they're managed. You'd have been a good bobby, I'm sure. But they don't want them like us any more. The public do, but 'they' don't. A certain lady Home Secretary got rid of 20,000 of the finest, most of them in their 40s and 50s. All that knowledge, skill and common sense gone, at a stroke. Anyway, someone's doing me a favour this week for the workshop, so I'm paying it forward. have a coffee on me.
I think it’s the same in the military Malcolm. The non-commissioned ranks have changed somewhat due to society, but the other side. Well, despite many being good, they appear to leave at the first or second option point. I worked in the headquarters on my last Op Tour. Of the 20 Commissioned ranks there, The Boss and his 2ic were great, after which there was probably 2 I would have worked for willingly. I think It’s that type of person who is running the country at many levels these days. Self important arrogant people who believe in themselves too much and influence those above. We’re not heading in a good direction mate. Thanks for the comment and additional support. Have a great week.
Morning Chris, I think that Duck had just seen your topless photograph😂😂😂
That Duck is always chopsing off. I like it. As for seeing me bear chested, not surprised it laughed. Thanks for the comment and have a great week
I must have done something right for a change; I’ll have to write this down in my memory book lest I forget. And, helping that girl increased my esteem for you. Happy trails to you.
Please do Tom. There are plenty of times, I've wondered about things I've spent. Thanks for you support. I do appreciate it. Enjoy your week. I must do better to appreciate those who support me in other ways. I'll do that for next week.
OMG. I was going to buy that boat, Mad Hatter, beautiful boat.
It is a great boat and I know Lloyd is very please with it. He calls it a vehicle for life. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week.
Great vlog again... I also enjoyed your Sunday vlog... sort of self evaluation. I guess you 'sandbagged' yourself this week; fair enough. One of the things I enjoy in your vlogs is little incidental things like catching a glimpse of boats I've come to recognise... Mad Hatter, Serafina, Falmouth ...and, of course, James's personal flotilla, lol. Sunday's vlogs are great because I get to see some of those people with closer, more detailed perspective. Your mate Dan (Longhaired) seems to have an interesting perspective. I wouldn't mind seeing you 'sandbag' him... or Candice on Vrowe Linda
I need to get this website up and running and to film and edit another Sandbag Sunday, makes that chore a little bit later each time. I’ve thought of a long haired Dan vlog. It would be interesting and I’m sure would open people eyes to the books and covers philosophy. Thanks for the comment Mike and enjoy your week.
I do enjoy your blogs. 😊
Thank you Mags. I appreciate the support. Have a great week.
Thank you for such kind words, we will miss you. Safe travels.
Pleasure. I've said it on the vid. You're a genuine lovely couple. I wish you all the very best for the coming winter and beyond. I'll catch you both on the flip side.
Don’t really need to know where you are Chris, love your chat and take on life. A refreshingly different vlog from so many others.
Thank you for the supportive comment. Currently Marsworth and pushing onto Leighton Buzzard. I generally push videos out after I’ve been to a location. Have a great week.
Great vlog Chris as always 😊
Thank you Jayne. I appreciate the comment. Enjoy your week.
So funny when Lloyd appeared at the window!! Well done for helping the girl - such a difficult situation with safeguarding concerns and without putting yourself at risk of allegations. I’m sure she will be very grateful it was you who found her and not someone less able and motivated to help. Love the vlog - and good to see Lloyd too. Have a great week and stay safe in the horrible weather that’s coming through 😊
One thing I forgot to do was to put the internal camera on as evidence should I have needed it. Must remember to do that more often. It is so much more enjoyable to film with a second party in the mix. Thanks for the comment Mishka and have a great week.
How on earth did Lloyd keep the boat going in a straight line whilst he walked down the gunwales? If I so much of look away to pick my tea up the boat is veering over to one bank or the other!!
My boat is the same. Dunno. I don’t think he does either. The boat just does. Have a great week.
I see you more as a counsellor than a copper, mate. Great video.
On LinkedIn it’s a coaching thing although not done a lot of paid work. Counselling is probably right Richard. Have a great week.
Hi mate another stunning video as for the lady asking for help . Unfortunately Chris this ocurance happens everyday ..no matter where you are in the UK.
It shows that there is a total lack of law and order.? . If you get involved you are likely to be arrested by the woke police.
It’s a shame that due to greed, other people suffer. It’s something I’ve not come across a lot of since I’ve been on the canal and it has taught me something about life first hand. Thanks for the comment Wayne. Have a great week.
stay safe up there it doesnt look good weatherwise i am down south hope to see u after the stoem
Hi Dougie. It’ll be nice to see you/meet you. I’ll be punching through to MK by Christmas so it’ll be easy to catch me up is you travel more than once in a week. Storm’s a brewing. Thanks for the support and enjoy your week.
Pretty sure it was this day I ran into you guys during my hike. In regards to the girl, that's the cut for you, always something going on. All the best 🤝
Exactly Jacob. It was nice bumping into you. Lloyd pointed out it was probably the most up to date vid I've done. The talky bit like intros are done to fill in the gaps of most vids but that was filming on the fly. Thanks for the comment and if you're in the area give me a knock.
Thanks Chris. :)
Always a good start to an early morning :)
Thanks Andy. Enjoy your week.
Another very shareable vlog. No, it didn't seem too long at all. You'll be able to save money on buying that solar powered waffle alarm.
Absolutely but I think that has unintentionally become my USP. Thanks for your support Peter.
Great vlog,,, nice to hear u helped a lady in distress 👍👍
A question for u ,,,
What is the most most amazing thing or experience u have had since living upon the cut ?
Cheers
Rich
Interesting question Rich and can't answer it on the hoof. It needs some thought. I'll write it down for a future vlog. Thank mate. Have a great week.
I enjoy seeing bits we have just been through. Houses and boats we have seen. Such an interesting part of the network You possibly save a life that night Chris. Thank goodness she called out near your boat. Perhaps she read the message in your boat name.
What is slightly disconcerting was she must have passed a few boats before she came to mine. Good job I was still awake too. Thanks for the comment Debbie. Have a great week.
I hope you’re alright, Chris. I’ve been looking for your Sunday vlog without success. I hope that you and yours are ok.
Hi Thomas. Thanks for asking. I’m fine except the time is running away with me as I needed to crack on with the website. It’s 75% done. I’ll be happy with 80% to put it live. Sundays are not going to every week but When the website is done, I’ll post a few. Thanks for your support. Vid out tomorrow.
Thanks!
Tom. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and kindness. Thank you very much indeed. I very much appreciate the support and comments but this is amazing.
In order to show an honest appreciation for your worth to us viewers, I’d have to rob a bank.
@thomasmarencik8050 Thank you. I just do what I do never expecting anyone to watch but that said, I’d be frustrated if they didn’t. I can’t change who I am as I’m too old. I’m set in my ways but I can change the way I produce my videos. I was pleased I was able to help that woman the other week. Disappointed that she passed a whole string of other boats before she got to mine. It’s the right thing instead of the correct thing which motivates me. Although in this case, that circumstance was both right and correct to do what I did. Thanks again for you support. Not sure what happened with the coffee thing. If I hear of a bank robbery in the US, mum’s the word. When previously questioned by the police, I’ve never shopped my mates.
Kev & Emma what a fabulous couple
& brilliant service they provide @ B&W Fuels
Emma kindly carried a bag up to Hatty as I was left struggling puffing & panting in her wake & always a big smile 't boot...
is this the most nearly real time vlog you've done sir ?!
little did I know the story line you were regaling between the Marsworth flight of locks - good on you buddy - hopefully the lost soul will remember back with fondness when she hopefully finds her happier place !!!
Emma is a strong woman that’s for sure. Yes, you’re right. It is almost the most up to day vlog I’ve done. Next week, a few weeks behind again. It suited the story telling to do it that way. I want to do more of it. See you soon. I said to Amanda you may knock as you pass her boat to arrange location for mooring up. I’ll give you the finer details by text. Have a good trip mate. Enjoy.
I never expect you to reply 😂. I’m glad when you do. But you are the second narrow boater to rescue a woman since I’ve been watching the canal videos. The first guy stepped onto his boat and there was a woman on it and she’d already unpacked her backpack 🤣😂🤣. What is it with you guys? I did say you are a knight and you are.
Thank you for a great video.
Was the other one James? If not he had a similar thing happen. Maybe you can recognise something in me that I didn't readily identify. Of course I would do the right thing despite the consequences. It was about risk and I generally have a good measure of it....generally. Thanks Shoan. Have a good week.
@@chrismears-inslowtime
Yes, James
As usual great video glad you stepped up and looked after the young girl, like you said if that had of been my daughter I would want someone like you to step in and take control of the situation too, hopefully she got the help she needed and was reunited with her family non too worse for her adventure. Good luck with the web site I look forward to having a look once it's up and running, as always take care and all the best mate Paul 👍
Thank you Paul. I appreciate the supportive comment. It was strange who she was running away from and yet who she was returned to!! Very complex I’m sure. Enjoy your week.
Cheers Chris. Like watching your vids first thing in the morning.
Thanks for the supportive comment and enjoy your week.
Great Vlog Chris and well done for helping the young lady (its always a difficult situation), great to see you have now hit the 5K have a fab week.
Thanks Gary. Absolutes punched through the 5K now. There have been occasions when I’ve passed the next 1000 only to slip back for a day or two. I hope the woman is in a better place in her mind. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week.
Maybe the never ending search for keeping the boat heated is what spurred people to newly subscribe. You could refer people to your playlists , not everyone seems to know people post groupings of vids there.
Well done on the young girl situation, proper procedure start to finish, get her help but project yourself 👍🏼. Used to work youth and adult “ Lifeline” a mostly suicide prevention service but we were there for all in stress. That’s exactly what we would have done/ suggested in that situation. 👍🏼🙋🏼♀️
That’s a thought I have never thought Jilli. Thanks you. (The playlist) Thanks for the procedural outlook. I simple didnt know but used a little common. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
@chris mears WELL DONE you should be so very proud of yourself
Thank you. I appreciate the comment. Have a great week.
Hey Chris, Captain Eddy here. Would it be possible to add a locator map at the beginning of each of your vlog? My wife and I will be having a "middle beam" (10') boat built in the near future, and watching (bingeing actually) all the various vlogs, it's difficult to figure out exactly where you are without googling each time. Very frustrating.... I'm trying to get a feel or lay of the land to plan our voyages. Thanks in advance. Love your take on life. Cheers
Things like the locator thingy and map stuff are great and I might consider it although not necessarily with the map. The reason is that is what everyone else does. I’ll try to remember to state where I am and where I’m going. Open Canal Maps is a good App to download and follow the journey. It’s about style. I don’t want the channel to be, here I am, this is where I’m going as this channel is not about the journey on the canal, but it is a journey of my life. I hope that offers a reason Eddy although I will give it a go. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week. Further, I wish you all the best on your wide-beam journey.
Brilliant vlog as always. Loved the cruise and also love the mad hatter boat. Got Dutch barge style windows. Love it. You answered a question I was going to ask. Do u put video to music or music to video ? But E/sounds is very good. Sadly I’ve just cancelled mine with them due to the price hike and my subscriber level lol so relying now on what’s downloaded and the music in editing suite. But your choice of music is brilliant. Have a great week Chris. Best wishes.
That’s interesting Trevor. I’ve not taken notice of the price hike. But I understand it has to add value through cost analysis. To answer the question, I put the vid on the edit, splice roughly and add music. Then cut to the rhythm. Appears to work but I’m far from expert. Thanks for the support Trevor. Have a great week.
😂Chris, did you get my contribution? I’m really not looking for a thank you. I’m just concerned that you got it and that I didn’t screw things up, again.
Hi Tom. I haven’t received a contribution with your name attached. I remember answering your comment last time as I was having a few issues with my account but it’s up and running. I hope you haven’t lost your money mate. Has it left you account. If so we will need to get in touch via email so I can find out what has happened. I think it’s quite straight forward from the link. Thank you mate. I appreciate the gesture.
Good one Chris. As others have said, where did that 19 minutes go! Talking of which OCD to get it bang on 19:00? (only joking) - Spot on with the girl. You did the right thing and handled it perfectly.
You don’t know…or maybe you do, how hard I tried to get it at 19:00. It added a second in upload. Thanks for the support and comment. Enjoy your week.
Well done for helping the lady in trouble...she was very lucky you was there! Must admit i did chuckle over the operator asking what her name was and your reply about not going on windy walks with her lol... Sorry your not feeling great, i normally swear on effervescent 2 x 1000mg of vitamin C for no more than 3 days...will stop a cold in its tracks, or drastically shorten it.
Serious question now...for people who live full-time on a narrow boat do you have a doctor's? 🤔
Thanks Ang. It was a sniffle. I sneeze for a good while then, blow. Go to bed all’s ok. Strange. Doctors. I’ll cross that bridge when it happens. I have to be dead or almost dead before I go anyway. And by the time I’m fit enough to go to the doctors, I’m getting better so dont bother. It’s worked for nearly 60 years. Thanks for the concern and have a great week.
Morning Chris…
Hi Tony. Good evening. Have a great week.
@@chrismears-inslowtime you too mate…
I've made a comment in S3 Ep15 as I've just saw something interesting on recirculating showers for vans. Maybe it would be a solution to your water filtration question.
Thanks Martin. I’ve responded. Have a great week.
What about a remote control "holder" just inside the hatch?
There are 5 in the boat that do all different sequences of lights. There is one just inside the hatch, one in the galley, saloon, office and cabin. I can operate them in the rooms they are in and the spaces next to them. It’s all quite good but took me 6 months to learn the sequences. In fact still don’t use their full capability. Thanks for the comment Jeff and enjoy your week.
@@chrismears-inslowtime So hanging one around your neck would only have a limited effect :)
Another good one, Chris. Canal life is heading into "winter mode" now. It'll be intersting to see how you handle this year while using what you gleaned from last winter.
Can I just make a comment about you referring to your choice of music? I love listening to your choice of music as a lot of it is very similar tastes to mine. When I ask about the music, I am enquiring about the name of the actual track from the music site that you use. That way I can link it directly on my playlists and listen to it again.
Until next time.
I’ll have a go at doing that Alan - music track mentioned in the description. I need to make a note of the song and artist prior to burning it off on disc. It’s a proper pain to re-look for it after. However, that one was called Herbal Tea. It’ll be easier to find on the play list. There are a few from that artist. I like her voice. Thanks for the comment. I was just thinking about the heating of the boat today. I used a bag of coal in 10 days, I think I opened another today and as it happens, it’s the first of the month. Let’s see. Have a great week,
@@chrismears-inslowtime Not to worry, Chris. I just use an app from my phone called Shazam. It usually indentifies the tune for me.
Have a great week ahead.
If you get stuck with the website, give me a shout, buddy. i am a retired geek, and I am looking at the canals as a future for myself if i stay in the UK
Now that is a very kind offer which I might take you up on. I’m sure it’s just about ‘Procrastination’ more than anything. I just need to give it time. If not, can you email me at nbinslowtime@gmail.com and if I have any issues we can find a way to get in touch. Thanks for the offer. Have a great week.
Chris: this week’s music was by Polly Paulusma wasn’t it? Remember i recommended her to you some time ago?
I do remember that comment to be honest. This version, according to Epidemic Sounds, is by Velvet Moon. I like it. Thanks for the comment and have a great week.
Underfloor heating or Radiator for Narrowboat?
Next week is about central heating John. As for underfloor. Good at design phase. Not sure afterwards but I’ll cover that next week. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your week.
Just visited your instagram, you do take a pretty good photo, are you self taught?
I am self taught Bob. I think I’m just average and currently I’, learning to use the phone to greater effect. It’s better for insta and easier to post instead of faffing around downloading and editing on a computer. I suppose, what it’s designed for. Thanks for the comment Bob. Have a great week.
@chris mears i am ex nb buffalo
Good evening. Thanks for commenting.
