Great video as always. Im leaving for bootcamp in 5 days so i just wanted to thank you for all the hilarious rants you've heaped on shitty bands and for all the great music you've introduced me to from your positive reviews. You rock bro.
I watched the Thirty seconds to march documentary "Artifact", and the way big corporations seem to treat their artists is ridiculous (from what I saw in the movie). When it comes to cds, I am glad I've stocked up so many over the years, as I've become aware that they contain much more data than mp3s. On a "high quality" mp3 you hear 320 kbps, while on a cd you hear 1412 kbps, and I can tell the difference. What I'd prefer for the future of the music business is that they provide high quality music for download - FLAC with cd-quality and higher (Like Neil Young provides on Pono musc, unfortunately there's not much metal there). These days storage is less of a problem than it used to be, most people have multiple terra bite external hardrives for that.
Me and my uncle always visit the music store and buy CD's and listen to them before we buy and everything, we do it kind of old school and I like it, I love buying the physical copy just to have and the digital copy and buy some merchandise, all though some people can't really afford that, we still support the best we can. Music will always be apart of me.
The big problem for me is the divide and clique nature of music. It's no longer something to enjoy and share with people, it's a membership to a gang. Especially with metal and hard rock. Metal and hard rock fans will mock you and even quit associating with you if you have a pop album in your collection. We need to get back to a time where stations play mixes as opposed to genre specific. For you youngsters out there, back in the day you could hear led zeppelin, Gordon Lightfoot, sly and the family stone and merle haggard on the same station. A hit was a hit. Imagine a world were you could hear mastodon, Katy perry, Bruno mars and Brad Paisley on the same station? I believe that would increase sales because people who wouldn't normally listen to something by a certain group would get exposed to it and may like it. I could see a mastodon fan digging brad paisley and vice versa because of all the awesome guitar work. I know this because I enjoy both. Before metal heads kill me on this check out some BP tracks, the dude can flat out play. That's my main thought. Good video.
***** never said it wasn't. Don't you ever get in the mood for some mcdonald's? It's terrible food and terrible for you, but it's quick and temporarily refilling. It's been my experience that even the most hard core of metal people have one popular performer they dig. Everyone has one, don't be afraid to admit it.
Thomas R. Bowen : You're absolutely right about what you wrote. A good friend of mine is much more of a Metal head than me even though I enjoy a fair dose of Metal myself, and he is also a big fan of some non metal acts. Among his favorite artists are Morrissey and Jim Morrison.
Martí Bosch I've been buying cd's since 2005, so that is my favorite thing to do (besides to play guitar). Just today, I bought James Brown gold, the burn the priest (Which is lamb of god's previous name), Alice in chains unplugged, 3rd I blind, A jimmy buffet Christmas album, & an orchestra christmas album.

Good points there Thomas R Bowen. But its been many years since I have listened to the radio at all let alone listen for any 'new music'! No interest and a waste of my time just like talking about it!!! When I hear A band I like 95% of the time I will Like and get all of their other previous or future releases. Thanx for bringing many great points also to the front coverkillernation
I have A lot, too. Just today, I boght James Brown gold, the burn the priest (Which is lamb of god's previous name), Alice in chains unplugged, 3rd I blind, A jimmy buffet Christmas album, & an orchestra christmas album.
The vast majority of my collection is extreme metal and some progressive rock. I have every Mastodon album, every Black Dahlia Murder album, every Opeth album, many Rush albums, and many Camel albums for a taste. I'm waiting on the vinyl pre-order of the Finnish black metal band "Devouring Star" and the new Leviathan boxset.
Great points CKN. One part where I'll have to politely disagree is that downloading is detrimental. This is because (most) downloaders are known to be perfectly willing to buy music if they can actually find it. Streaming, as guilty as we ALL are of it, is what's really doing damage, you actually have to put in some sort of work to download whereas you don't whatsoever with streaming
I don't buy every single album I listen to but what I tend to do is find a new band and listen to their older work and then buy basically everything the band releases afterwards. I also will go to shows and buy merch to help the bands that I like. As for the singles thing that doesn't really apply as much in the Posthardcore, metalcore, pop punk, heavy metal genres because the albums don't have as much filler as the pop and rap albums do. I also feel like more people having satellite radio would help some people find new music and help album sales as well.
I've been wanting to collect CD's recently and vinyls if possible. Thanks for the discussion. I honestly think people should collect CD's at the very least and more people exposed to heavy metal, Thankfully I've gotten started on the latter.
I see your point, but if you live in a small country like Austria for example, "going on the hunt" most often turns out to be a fruitless effort, since you don't even have proper record stores here, and obtaining a certain record, especially if it's not a super - popular one, can be quite difficult. Ordering from Amazon seems to be the only option in most of the cases
I buy CDs and go to shows when I can afford them or when one of my favorite bands comes to town. In fact, I just bought Beck's Morning Phase CD. It is really nice too. God, I would hate if artists did the exclusive fan-club only deluxe stuff you suggested. People would miss out on stuff.
I've been buying cd's since 2005. Just today, I boght James Brown gold, the burn the priest (Which is lamb of god's previous name), Alice in chains unplugged, 3rd I blind, A jimmy buffet Christmas album, & an orchestra christmas cd
Devin McCreery Cool man. I have about 200 CDs now and that's from collecting for some years, I'm 20 years old. I like some stuff on that BtP record and of course Alice in Chains is always cool.
I don't know why I should pay for songs I don't like. So i glad we can pick and choose what song we want from the album instead of buying an 15-25 album we only spent 1.25 a song on iTunes yes it when up from 99 cent
If you look for better artists you don't have to have worry about having a bunch of filler songs. stay away from shitty pop artists that will obviously be one hit wonders, i learned this early.
If you don't mind, Id kinda like to point out one or two flaws within number 4. The only way for an independent artist to get a wider audience is through the digital age (be it iTunes, soundcloud, band camp). If you're in Ohio (as I am), you're only gonna be able to support the scene that resides in your area of we were to let go of the digital medium. As a support of the upcoming artists in the indie blogosphere, streaming to a wider audience is the main surviving point of wide exposure as oppose to selling CDs at a local market. Also, as one who travels by foot a lot, I need my music with me when I'm out for a jog. I got nothing against physical copies. I just like to consume my music on a personal level. Dunno if you'll even read this but I'd like to see how you respond.
Brent Jarvis I've been buying cd's since 2005, so that is my favorite thing to do (besides to play guitar). Just today, I bought James Brown gold, the burn the priest (Which is lamb of god's previous name), Alice in chains unplugged, 3rd I blind, A jimmy buffet Christmas album, & an orchestra christmas album.
How do I convince people to try new genres of music? I've noticed that most of my friends aren't really interesting in exploring new music genres. Even when I try to tell them what is happening to music, they don't really listen..
Try to get them to listen to revival music: music played by bands that sound like they're from a different era. I suggest putting Elephant by Tame Impala on in the car and they would be surprised that song is by a new artist.
Joshua Allgood I think you misinterpreted what I said. I meant music of different genres, outside of Rap and Pop. I'm going to edit my comment so no one else makes that mistake. :)

You're an idiot. Most of that money isn't even going towards the artists, but the greedy suits that own those artists. I personally wouldn't know about most of the albums I currently have if it wasn't for the Internet... the exposure alone has done great things for music... just not the outdated, obsolete music "business."
Welcome everyone to the 300 club. Tonight's specials are flay minion, and A hot pocket, done in A dirty microwave. We have seats in the back of the diner.
Yeah, full-length pop and rap albums seem futile since the huge majority of their fans only listen to the singles. That's because the rest of the songs are fillers, which reinforces how crappy mainstream "artists" are today.
well most underground music is digital. hard put is the digging and listen to 9 ok band or artist to get the one good artist. it what have to do find good pop punk band. why the big Lebels still have there power because people are to lazy to dig to find good band and artist.
Not to put too much blame on the industry. But the prices of albums have always have been too damn high. A cd costs 20 times more than the production costs. And labels are greedy enough. They sell the cd at 10 times the production costs. And most of them are too lazy to have their own distribution staff. So leeches like Indiemerch, EMP and Sony take their profit for shipping the cds. And stores have to make a profit. So if the distribution companies were gone and labels didn't overprice their products. The physical format would not have been overrun by inferior format so easily. And the "finished product" artists that we get pushed into our ears are too shitty to get an all ages devoted fan group. Like the infamous Kiss army. NEW MARDUK ALBUM!!!

Do you mean thirty second's to mars? or is this something i've never heard of?
Oops, yes I do:)

Shut up...make your own compilation disc, get all dressed up all f&€k off
The radio is irrelevant.

***** : Absolutely! It is all about freedom and freedom to choose what ever it is you want to listen to.
You forgot cassettes. A lot of small labels in my area release music on cassettes and sometimes 8track.
a lot of great points man. love your vids, its thanks to you i got further into heavy metal and found the bands that really do great things
Man, I think you are one of the wisest users of youtube

I counted 278 CDs and 16 vinyl in my collection plus waiting on two more pre-orders.

can't wait till the new carach angren album 'this is no fairytale' is released, that is gonna be something to add to my collection!

The deluxe edition of The Pale Emperor is certainly worth the extra cost

No, I understood. My examples were not exactly pop music.
I have a friend that would just listen to Eminem and within 2 years I that guy was jamming the fuck out at a Metallica tribute show. 🤘🏻
I've never downloaded music illegally. I constantly buy CD's and buy music all the time. Illegal downloading is killing music.

Springfeeel you're a fucking idiot when you buy music off iTunes the artists make little money while most of it goes to Apple
itunes is for assholes who like people controlling their music.
Raymond Leggs Yep.
